Hyderabad, January 29: “They are going to deport us all within a few hours,” Tri-Valley University student Hari (name changed on request) told Express on the telephone on Friday, the horror in his voice unmistakable.

With the university at Pleasanton in the suburbs of San Francisco declared a sham university for immigration fraud, hundreds of Indian students, many from Andhra Pradesh, braced up to be put on the plane back home in the next 48 hours.

Protests rock OU, KU and TU

Hyderabad, January 29: Protests rocked the Kakatiya, Osmania and Telangana universities on Friday with students taking out rallies demanding that their semester examinations be deferred till a bill for the creation of a separate Telangana State was introduced in Parliament.

Police prosecutors test on Feb. 20

Hyderabad, January 29: The Chairman, State Level Police Recruitment Board, Hyderabad, in a pressnote has stated that the written examination for the recruitment to the posts of Additional Public Prosecutors Grade II and Assistant Public Prosecutors in Andhra Pradesh State Prosecution Service mentioned in the notification dated 12-11-2010 will be held on February 20.

The chairman asked the eligible candidates to contact the DIG/IG of the respective ranges on February 14 and 15 in case of not receiving Hall Tickets i.e., Identity Card (Candidate copy) on or before February 11.

31 AP girls get Fair & Lovely scholarships

Hyderabad, January 29: The number of students awarded the Fair & Lovely Foundation Scholarship in 2010 has gone up to 212 from 183 last year. Among these girls, 31 belong to Andhra Pradesh. These 31 girls got scholarships competing with three lakh applications Fair & Lovely received from all over India. Out of thousands of applications received across the country for Fair and Lovely scholarship, Andhra Pradesh contributed to more than 30 per cent applications with the balance 70 per cent coming from over 23 States from India.

College security supervisor booked for molesting student

Mohali (Punjab), January 29: The security supervisor of a law college here has been booked for molesting a first year student, police said Saturday.

Amandeep Singh, in his late 30s, is the security supervisor of Army Institute of Law. The victim, a resident of Gurgaon, was staying at the college’s hostel.

“The girl says she had gone to a beauty parlour on Jan 23. She came back at 8 p.m., missing the 7.30 p.m. deadline to enter the hostel,” police officer Harbans Lal told IANS.

Students’ strike hits medical college hospitals

Thiruvananthapuram, January 28: Normal functioning at the five medical college hospitals in Kerala continued to be hit for the fourth day on Friday as post-graduate students have struck work, demanding a stipend hike and fee reduction.

The strike called by Kerala Medical Post Graduates’ Association turned more serious after the house surgeons also joined it on Thursday.

In all, more than 2,000 professionals are on strike.

IBAB, IGNOU announce new masters course in science

New Delhi, January 28: In a new venture, the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB) on Friday announced it was collaborating with the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) for a science discipline course.

The programme, masters in bioinformatics and biotechnology, will be a regular course the IBAB campus in Bangalore and students with bachelor’s degree in any branch of science or technology will be eligible to pursue it, according to an IBAB official.

NCC strength to grow to 15 lakh – Prime Minister

New Delhi, January 28: The National Cadet Corps (NCC), India’s tri-services movement to groom school and college students into disciplined citizens, will grow in strength by two lakh and touch the 15-lakh mark soon, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said here on Friday.

“I am very happy to inform you that in recognition of the good work done by the National Cadet Corps, the government has sanctioned an enhancement in its authorized cadet strength from 13 lakh to 15 lakh,” Singh said addressing the cadets at the Prime Minister’s NCC Rally.

Ragging is violence, not to be tolerated: President

New Delhi, January 28: President Pratibha Patil Tuesday strongly condemned incidents of ragging in educational institutions, saying it is violence and should not be tolerated.

‘Cases of ragging in educational institutions are also disturbing. Ragging is violence,’ Patil said in her address to the nation on the eve of the 62nd Republic Day.

Students must get level playing field in competitiveness: President

New Delhi, January 28: President Pratibha Patil Tuesday said that there should be a level playing field so that students from all sections of society can attend premier institutions like Indian Institutes of Technology.

‘Our endeavour should be to create a level playing field in educational competitiveness so that students from all sections of society can enter premier institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs),’ Patil said in her address to the nation on the eve of Republic Day.

Jharkhand children hoist tricolour despite blast by Maoists

Ranchi, January 28: Maoists’ move to disrupt Republic Day celebrations early Wednesday with a bomb blast could not deter Jharkhand’s school children from hoisting the national flag and celebrate the auspicious occasion.

Maoists blasted a school building and hoisted black flags in Palamau district, police sources said.

The guerrillas used detonators to attack the building in Rajharaa Khutti village. Black flags were put up on two school buildings.

New Delhi, January 28: The Vedanta University project in the holy city of Puri in Orissa will continue to remain stalled as the Supreme Court Friday ordered status quo in respect of land acquired or sought to be acquired for the varsity.

An apex court bench of Justice D.K. Jain and Justice H.L. Dattu ordered status quo on the ‘nature, character and possession’ of the land acquired or sought to be acquired.

Founder of Tri-Valley charged with visa fraud

Washington, January 28: Susan Xiao-Ping Su, founder of the “sham” Tri-Valley University in California which has mostly students from Andhra Pradesh on its rolls, has been charged with running an elaborate immigration fraud, netting millions of dollars from foreign nationals hoping to migrate to the US.

The fate of the university’s 1,555 students, 95 per cent of whom are from India and mostly Andhra Pradesh, remains unclear amid reports that some of them being questioned after raids by the US Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) last week.

JNTU, Synopsis to launch new software design programme

Hyderabad, January 28:Synopsys, the US-headquartered world leader in software designing, and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) in Hyderabad Friday signed an agreement to establish microelectronics programme at the JNTU.

EAMCET notification on February 5

Hyderabad, January 27: The EAMCET-2011 notification will be released on February 5 and the final decision will be taken on Saturday after the EAMCET Committee meeting. The exam, however, will be held on May 8 this year.

Officials said the notification will carry a clause about the mandatory 50 per cent marks to be obtained in Intermediate exams as per AICTE new norms. “We are incorporating the clause as the government wants to get a letter officially from the AICTE before implementing the norm.

Afghan students promise to return to Orissa

Bhubaneswar, January 23: Nearly 60 Afghan students who fled a Cuttack university after a clash with locals have pledged to return to Orissa only if they can stay here. The authorities have accepted the condition.

The students of Ravenshaw University at Cuttack, 26 km from here, quit Orissa after a clash with local students Jan 13 in the campus. Three local students and an Afghan were hurt in the incident.

Police have arrested the university’s student union president for the violence.
