Doctor held for duping MBBS aspirants

Hyderabad, February 14: An MBBS qualified doctor, who duped several students by promising them seats in medical colleges, was arrested by the Cyberabad police on Sunday.

The 26-year-old accused, Gaddam Shyam Sunder, a native of Adilabad, completed his MBBS in 2009 and worked in private nursing homes for a brief period. He later set up his own organisation named Gaddam Rajgadh Education Trust at Adilabad with a branch at Kothapet in the city. He even planned to obtain government land in the name of the Trust.

Vocational training to get a makeover

Hyderabad, February 14: If vocational training for women brings to mind images of women being taught knitting, embroidery and sewing, the latest moves by the state education department is all set to change that.

The department, with an aim to bring about a change in the kind of vocational training being imparted, is planning to shift the focus from low profile job training with little current market value to more commercially viable training in professional jobs.

Montek attends St Patrick’s centenary fete

Hyderabad, February 14: The St. Patrick’s High School, Secunderabad erupted in joy to have its alumnus Padma Vibhushan Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, at the valedictory of its centenary celebrations. Montek Singh Ahluwalia studied in the school from 1953 to 1957.

Ahluwalia, who was accompanied by his wife Isher Judge, spoke about his journey to become the deputy chairman of the Planning Commission and how the St. Patrick’s had helped him shape up as a good human being.

NDC creates history with first-ever doctorate viva

New Delhi, February 14: The National Defence College (NDC), India’s premier defence studies institution affiliated to the Madras University, has entered history books by holding its first-ever viva-voce for a doctorate degree.

The NDC, a capital-based institution which conducts Master of Philosophy courses for serving armed forces officers, held the viva-voce for awarding Ph.D. in defence-related topic when retired Major General G.D. Bakshi submitted his research thesis on the topic ‘Limited War Under Conditions of Nuclear Symmetry: The Urgent Need for an Indian Doctrine’.

Chandigarh, February 13: In a bid to highlight developmental issues and the problems of the people, the Panjab University (PU) here Sunday got its own “Jyotirgamaya” community radio.

No Early End to The Woes of TVU Students

New York, February 13: Three weeks after they lost their visa status to be in the US, more than 1,000 Indian students from the Tri Valley University (TVU) are in for a “long haul” though the Indian Government has raised the issue at the highest level.

Many of the students from the California-based TVU, which has been shut down on charges of massive visa fraud, said they are stuck here without any concrete plan to get out of their dilemma.

Dubai MBA gets top 100 ranking in FT list

Dubai, February 13: In the space of six years, Indian business school SP Jain has managed to clinch a spot on the top 100 list of the Financial Times’ (FT) Global MBA rankings this year.

The university’s Dubai/Singapore Global MBA programme came 68th among the world’s major business school players.

Apart from its Global MBA ranking highly, the Financial Times ranked the university 7th in Asia, 9th among Asian schools on “Value for Money” and 13th in Asia for “International Mobility” and “Placement Success”. SP Jain has links in Dubai, Delhi, Mumbai, Singapore, Shanghai and Sydney.

Tourism graduates have no jobs

Jeddah, February 13: With unemployment a widespread concern in the Kingdom, the first batch of 44 graduates of a new tourism management course at King Saud University in Riyadh is unable to find jobs. The students claim they were promised jobs by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA).

“More than half of us were reluctant to study tourism. However, after we were told that the market needs us and that we would be guaranteed jobs, we completed our four-year-study only to then sit at home,” said Al-Mutairi, a 23-year-old graduate who is from Tabuk.

Jamia to celebrate Zakir Hussain’s birth anniversary

New Delhi, February 12: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is organising an Inter-Agency Sports and Cultural Meet Sunday in memory of the late president Zakir Husain, a university official said.

“The event, arranged by JMI’s department of social work, aims at showcasing the talents of marginalised children from various communities who are being looked after by the varsity students,” the official said.

Hyderabad, February 11: About 12 institutions participated in the event. “I want to pursue my masters in industrial engineering from the University of Massachusetts,”said Ravi Teja, a student. “I am planning to apply for for three universities including University of Dallas. The tri-valley scam does not scare me as I have a couple of relatives in the States,”said Surya Prateik, software engineer, Convergys.

ECET-2011 exam on May 20

Hyderabad, February 11: The ECET 2011 for diploma holders seeking admission into engineering and pharmacy courses, will be held across the state on May 20. The examination for admission into second year graduate engineering and pharmacy courses in private engineering and pharmacy colleges for the academic year 2011-12 will be conducted by the JNTU Hyderabad and admissions will be made through rankings in ECET-2011.

The officials said that students, who scored above 50 per cent marks in the polytechnic examinations will be eligible to appear for ECET 2011.

Three choices for sham US varsity students- radio tags come off 2 Indians

Washington, February 10: US immigration authorities removed radio tags of a couple of Indian students of a sham university in California as it asked all duped students to contact them directly to find out their options.
Ankle bracelet monitors of two of the 18 tagged students of California-based Tri Valley University (TVU), some 90 percent of them from India, mostly Andhra Pradesh, were removed after they went to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with an immigration attorney.

Chandigarh, February 10: Taking serious note of the poor quality of construction work and the use of sub-standard furniture in all the 21 new model schools established under a centrally-sponsored scheme in Punjab, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday ordered an inquiry into the matter.
Badal has sought action against the erring officers and contractors for the alleged irregularities. The decision was taken by Badal in a meeting with the principals of these schools here on Wednesday.

US authorities to provide options for students

Washington, February 10: In what is being seen as a step towards resolution of the crisis faced by Indian students of the dubious Tri-Valley University, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has asked the 1,555 affected students to contact it to find out the options available to them.

The options will be conveyed individually to the students, in line with ICE’s established procedures of secrecy and confidentiality. An advisory posted by ICE on its website — http://www.ice.gov/sevis/tri-valley-110118.htm — guides students on how to go about.

Headless start to academic year for 9 varsities

Hyderabad, February 10: As the academic year comes to a close next month, nine universities in the State will see their vice-chancellors completing their three-year term too. With the government failing to find their replacements in time, these universities are likely to function under the vice-chancellors of other universities who might get an additional charge.

Ahmedabad, February 09: Students in the city on Wednesday got an opportunity to showcase their general knowledge prowess at IGNITE 2011, a mutli-city, inter-school quiz contest organized by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).
The contest attracted over 96 teams representing various city schools.
