‘Fine arts teaching is lagging in universities’

Agra, February 17: With very little attention given to arts education in Indian universities, the country’s classical art forms could end up as the biggest casualty, according to experts.
Even while India boasts of a magnificent variety of classical dance forms, they are under threat of Western dance invasion as children are taking to salsa, hip hop and other dances “that look like mass drill on stage”, said one of the participants at the National Conference on Relevance of Fine Art Education in 21st Century held here.

US promises ‘fair solution’ to TVU students

Washington, February 17: The US has assured India of providing a “fair solution” to the “critical problem” faced by hundreds of Indian students whose academic career is at stake following the closure of the “sham” Tri-Valley University on charges of a massive visa fraud.

Under-secretary of state for political affairs William Burns held out the assurance during his meeting with India’s foreign secretary Nirupama Rao here.

Rebuilding Indian students’ faith post Oz attacks – Varghese

New Delhi, February 16: The Australian government is trying its best to rebuild the faith of Indian students after the 2009 “racist attacks” on students studying in the country, the Australian High Commissioner to India Peter Varghese said here on Wednesday.

“We know the attacks have left a deep scar on the minds of the students, but we are trying our best to rebuild the faith,” Varghese told the sources.

“We have come up with inter-cultural engagements to make all the international students feel better while they study in Australia,” he added.

US assures India of `fair solution’ to sham varsity issue

Washington, February 16: The US has assured India that it’s looking at a “fair solution” of the issue of some 1,500 Indian students affected by the closure of a sham US university on charges of visa fraud.
The assurance came when Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao took up the issue with US Undersecretary of State Bill Burns on Tuesday as a follow-up to a conversation over the weekend between Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Chandigarh, February 16: The Haryana government has decided to provide paid internship to students of professional courses in different sections of the school education department in the state.

Officials said internship would be provided to students studying engineering and post-graduation in management, social welfare, journalism and mass communication at recognized universities and institutions in Haryana.

Nirupama Rao to take up sham US varsity issue with Clinton

Washington, February 16: Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao is expected to take up the issue of some 1500 Indian students of a sham US university with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday.
Ahead of the meeting, Indian Ambassador Meera Shankar conveyed to Clinton the details on the issue of Indian students of Tri-Valley University in California, which was closed last month on charges of visa fraud.

NDC creates history with first-ever doctorate viva

New Delhi, February 16: The National Defence College (NDC), India’s premier defence studies institution affiliated to the Madras University, has entered history books by holding its first-ever viva-voce for a doctorate degree.
The NDC, a capital-based institution which conducts Master of Philosophy courses for serving armed forces officers, held the viva-voce for awarding Ph.D. in defence-related topic when retired Major General G.D. Bakshi submitted his research thesis on the topic ‘Limited War Under Conditions of Nuclear Symmetry: The Urgent Need for an Indian Doctrine’.

School fees now deductible from income tax in Mexico

Mexico City, February 16: Mexico has passed a new law that allows citizens to deduct the payment of private school fees from their income tax.

The rule will apply to education ranging from pre-school to high school. Taxpayers will be able to deduct the amount spent on the studies of their children, parents or spouse, President Felipe Calderon said.

But the deduction is limited to the government’s annual average per-pupil spending on public schools, anywhere from 12,900 pesos ($1,070) at the elementary level to nearly twice that for high school.

CBSE releases promotion policy for Class IX

New Delhi, February 16: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has come up with a promotion policy for the Class-IX students. The CBSE has asked all schools that the year-end subject-wise grades of a Class-IX student are to be calculated on the basis of performance in all formative and summative assessments in scholastic areas as well as grades obtained in co-scholastic areas.

PGRRCDE exam fee payment dates

Hyderabad, February 16: The last date for payment of examination fee and submission of examination form for M.A, M.Com and M.Sc (previous and final year) annual examinations, 2011 of Prof. G Ram Reddy Centre for Distance Education has been fixed as February 24 and the last date for submission of both with a late fee of Rs 100 has been fixed as March 3.

The Director, PGRRCDE, Mr M Anand Rao stated in a press note that the examination application forms and news letters have already been sent to the candidates to their respective addresses.

Porn clips forces JNU administration to undertake drastic measures

New Delhi, February 15: The porn MMS clip at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has forced the administration to undertake some drastic measures. Some of them are not finding favour with students.

Student associations in the varsity held a protest on Monday in front of the Administrative Block condemning an official circular by the JNU administration on banning the entry of girls to boys’ hostel after 10.30 p.m. following the MMS episode.

Eligibility test for law graduates on March 6

New Delhi, February 14: Around 23,000 fresh law graduates will appear in a mandatory open book written exam on March 6 for the first time, the result of which will determine whether they would be eligible to practice as lawyers in Indian courts. The exam will be conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI), the regulator for legal profession and education in the country, in 10 languages at 27 centres across the country.
The candidates will start receiving their admit cards for the exam from February 15 onwards, according to the BCI.

Rahul interacts with students in Shillong

Shillong, February 14: Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi visited this Meghalaya capital on Monday to interact with students of the North Eastern Hill University on a range of issues from corruption to price rise and insurgency.

Gandhi was here for a session “Rendezvous with Rahul Ji”. He was scheduled to visit Sikkim capital Gangtok earlier in the day for a similar session, but that was cancelled.

G. Krishnan, programme coordinator, said Gandhi interacted with students on issues ranging from corruption to price rise and insurgency.

Summer vacation is cut short in schools

New Delhi, February 14: The Vacation plans will now need to be reworked as all the government and government-aided schools will now break for summer from May 11, and not May 1, as is the practice. Winter holidays, according to a circular issued by the directorate of education, will be longer � from December 26 to January 15. The break usually ended on January 2.

During the past few years it is seen that winter has become much harsher in January. This year the vacations were extended till the second week of January, so it was decided to changed the annual calendar.

Japanese channel to film Super 30

Patna, February 14: A team from a Japanese television channel has arrived in Patna to make a documentary on Anand Kumar, who founded Bihar’s free coaching centre Super 30.
Yuta Amma from Japan’s Kansai Telecasting Corporation, told that Anand Kumar is regarded as “a role model in Japan”.

Kumar’s Super 30 coaching centre has helped many students from underprivileged sections of the society to enter the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Amma is in Patna with his crew to make a special documentary on Kumar and his Super 30.

Panjab University gets own community radio

Chandigarh, February 14: In a bid to highlight developmental issues and the problems of the people, the Panjab University (PU) here on Sunday got its own “Jyotirgamaya” community radio.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni inaugurated the radio station at the School of Communication Studies building on the university campus.

India raises issue of sham US varsity students

Washington, February 14: Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna has sought US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s personal intervention to ensure that the interests of over 1,500 Indian students of a sham California university are protected and their future is not jeopardised.
Krishna raised the plight of the Indian students of the dubious Tri Valley University (TVU) in Pleasanton, California that was closed down last month on charges of selling student visas, in a conversation with Clinton over the weekend, the Indian embassy here said.

Girls outshine boys at Panjab University convocation

Chandigarh, February 14: Girls clearly outnumbered boys at the 60th annual convocation function at Panjab University (PU) here Monday. Out of the 479 students who were awarded degrees, 351 were girls.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni was the chief guest at the convocation, while Punjab Governor and Chandigarh administrator Shivraj Patil presided over the function.
