CBSE Board exams for Class 12, 10 begin today

New Delhi, March 01: Over 769,929 students are appearing in the Class 12 exam of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) which start Tuesday.

The Class 10 Board exams would also begin the same day. Over 1,061,566 students will appear in Class 10 exams, almost 15 percent higher than last year.

‘A total of 454,131 boys and 315,798 girls will be appear in Class 12 board exams, while the Class 10 exam would be taken by 632,726 boys and 428,840 girls,’ a CBSE official said

Education gets 24 percent hike in budget allocation

New Delhi, February 28: Observing that education is the key to reaping the benefits of the demographic dividend in the form of a young population, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday announced a 24 percent hike in the budget allocation for education.

“For education, I propose an allocation of Rs.52,057 crore, with an increase of 24 percent over the current year,” Mukherjee informed the Lok Sabha while presenting the budget.

Date extended for submission of fees for Distance education PG exams

Hyderabad, February 27: Director Prof. G Ram Reddy Centre for Distance Education Osmania University stated in a press note that in view of campus situation and due to several holidays the last date for Payment of exam fees towards all PG exams and submission of forms has been extended till March 3 without late fee and march 11 with a late fee of Rs. 100.

LIC all-India exam question paper leaked

New Delhi, February 27: The question paper of an all-India examination for the post of assistant administrative officer of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) were leaked in the national capital ahead of the exam, police said.

The incident came to light after Delhi Police’s crime branch got hold of the copies of the question paper from some persons much ahead of the scheduled time of the exam.

Sans education, girls under big risk: UNICEF

Hyderabad, February 26: Girls still lag behind boys in secondary school education as more than 70 million adolescents are currently out of schools across the world. Due to lack of proper education, girls are predominantly becoming victims of domestic violence and also more susceptible to the risk of HIV infections.

These details were published in the latest report of UNICEF which was released formally by Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at his camp office here today.

Jamia Millia reaches out to women in distress

New Delhi, February 25: The women’s studies centre in Jamia Millia Islamia has broken new ground by reaching out to distressed and deprived women on the capital’s fringes as part of its study module.

“We are trying to work with the community in an organised way because we are trying to make our academic curriculum more initiative- oriented,” Bulbul Dhar-James, director of the university’s Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women Studies, told IANS.

Jamia to study ‘minority institution’ status for implementation

New Delhi, February 24: Jamia Millia Islamia said Wednesday it will study the judgment by the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) granting it ‘minority institution’ status and work out the modalities of its implementation.

‘The judgment does not in any way change the essential character of Jamia. The university has always had a commitment to national goals of social justice and secular ideals. It will continue to uphold these in the future too,’ university vice chancellor Najeeb Jung said.

HC allows separate CETs for PGDBM by private colleges

Mumbai, February 24: The Bombay High Court today allowed private unaided institutions to conduct their own Common Entrance Tests for Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) courses for the academic year 2011-12.

Division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice S J Vazifdar today stayed the circulars issued by the state government and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) stating that they would conduct a single CET for admission to all PGDBM courses.

Foreign students anxious over Telangana protests

Hyderabad, February 23: Anxiety writ large on her face, Jenu, a Chinese national is engrossed in a deep conversation with her friends at a shady corner inside the EFLU campus.

The animated discussion between expatriate students was about the Telangana protests which rocked the campus on Monday.

“How will I go home now?” questioned Jenu, a student of MA (English). She resides near the main gate of the Osmania University campus, at the other end of the EFLU campus.

UAE students to get study material on BlackBerry phones

Abu Dhabi, February 23: Learning in Abu Dhabi University will now move beyond the walls of the classroom as the students will get BlackBerry smartphones to access all course materials and topic updates whenever and wherever they are.

The university is implementing a mobile education programme powered by Etisalat in collaboration with Blackboard Inc.

The project comprises of three classes and 75 students. This innovative programme has been designed to provide a contemporary and tech-savvy learning medium for higher education students.

13 lakh child labourers in AP: Chandana Khan

Hyderabad, February 22: At least 13.60 lakh children aged between 5-14 years are working as child labourers in the state.

Besides, the number of girl child labourers is higher (7,25,456) than that of boys (6,37,883), said Chandana Khan, principal secretary, school education.

She was the chief guest at an exchange visit on ‘child labour free zones and right to education’ organised by M V Foundation here on Monday.

She called upon all NGOs to assist the state government in implementing the Right to Education Act to provide better education to children.

Jamia is minority institution, rules commission

New Delhi, Feb 22 (IANS) The National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) Tuesday observed that the Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is a minority education institution founded by the Muslims for the benefit of community.

“We hold that the Jamia Millia Islamia is a minority education institution,” said the three-member bench of the NCMEI in its judgment in the case relating to the status of the university.

The bench was headed by Justice M.S.A. Siddiqi. Its other two members were Mohinder Singh and Cyriac Thomas.

Govt working to create more jobs: Anand Sharma

New Delhi, February 21: India has sustained economic growth of 8-9 percent and the government is working to further improve economic growth and create more jobs, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said Monday.

“We are working on to build India the manufacturing capital of the world so that more and more jobs can be created to use the global opportunities,” he said, in his address at the All India Management Association’s (AIMA) foundation day function here.

Extra marks for right attitude- CBSE

Chennai, February 17: The Central Board of Secondary Education has said Class IX students can score higher marks in maths or science by showing they have a healthy attitude or adequate life skills.

In a recent circular, CBSE has asked schools to award higher grades in subjects under the scholastic category, which includes English, mathematics, science or social science, to students who get exceptionally good scores in coscholastic areas where they are testedattitude towards the teacher, discipline, or leadership qualities.

IIMs trash HRD suggestions on teaching hours, smaller boards

Bangalore, February 17: Faculty bodies at IIM-Calcutta and IIM-Bangalore have passed unanimous resolutions to set aside the reports which suggest reducing the size of IIM boards and societies and asking each faculty to teach for 160 hours a year.

Other IIMs are likely to follow suit seeking broader consultation on the proposed reforms.

They have trashed the HRD ministry-appointed committee reports on the new governance structure and teaching load, saying that they are based on incorrect data.

Indian varsities fuel Mauritius’ ‘knowledge hub’ dream

New Delhi, February 17: Private Indian universities setting up campuses in Mauritius are helping the island nation off the African coast realise its vision of transforming into a knowledge hub.

Two of the largest private universities in India, the DY Patil Medical College and Amity University, are in the process of setting up their campuses in Mauritius. The JSS Mahavidyapeetha (JSSMVP), a Karnataka-based educational foundation, established the JSS Academy of Technical Education in Mauritius in 2006.

Sham university – US promises to cooperate with India

Washington, February 17: The US has promised to cooperate with India to resolve the issue of affected Indian students of a sham US university, but said it’s hard to say what is possible pending a full probe.
The issue “remains under investigation”, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters on Wednesday when asked about the status of the students affected by the closure of “sham” Tri-Valley University (TVU) in California, on charges of visa fraud.
