The changing contours of Hindi discussed

New Delhi, March 13: India’s national language Hindi finds itself battling with change due to the influences of other languages, writers and poets opined at the ongoing Penguin Spring Fever here.

“Hindi has been institutionalised to suit the needs of the people,” said Noor Zaheer, who has donned many hats as writer, dancer, playwright and journalist.

“It has been politicised because we get to see its different forms in spoken world, literature, and a totally different world in the Hindi media,” she added.

Bangalore University refuses reaffiliation to 170 colleges

Bangalore, March 13: About 170 colleges affiliated to the Bangalore University (BU) are in trouble. This year, the varsity has decided not to send the local inspection committee (LIC) to those colleges that have not been active for the academic year 2011-2012. Therefore, these colleges will not be reaffiliated to BU.Most of these colleges either have double-digit admissions or no admissions at all.

AICTE guidelines: Private B-schools unhappy

New Delhi, March 13: Unhappy with AICTE’s modification of admission norms for management programmes, major bodies representing private B-schools have said they will oppose any move to “herd them” with state university-affiliated courses and accused the regulator of “apathy” to quality education.

They have expressed fears that state governments, who have been made a major player in the admission process, do not have the necessary “wherewithal” to conduct the tests.

3,837 schools functioning in rented premises in JK

Jammu, March 12:Over 3,800 schools were functioning in rented premises in Jammu and Kashmir, the state government said today .

In a written reply to a question, state Education Minister Peerzada Mohd Sayeed said that 3,837 schools are functioning in rented premises for which Rs 11.91 crore has been paid in the last three years.

Giving further details, he said out of these, 3028 are primary schools, 736 Middle schools, 67 High schools and 6 Higher Secondary Schools.

75 law college students booked for burning Tricolour

Coimbatore, March 12:Case under Sec 2 of prevention of insult to National Honour Act have been registered against 75 students of Government Law College here for burning the national flag and the Indian Constitution, police said
The students, including 35 girls, covering their faces with black clothes, had burnt two national flags inside the college premises yesterday as part of their ongoing strike seeking action against a woman teacher for allegedly abusing students a fortnight ago.

Harvard is world’s top university

Washington, March 12: Harvard University, which is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States, has been ranked as the world’s top varsity.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology made it to number two, with the University of California Berkeley coming in at number four in the list of top 10 most highly regarded universities in world.

Britain’s prestigious Cambridge University and Oxford University ranked three and six respectively, with University of Tokyo in Japan securing eighth place in ‘The Times Higher Education’ world reputation rankings.

DU Girl Killing: Neighbours, Students Stage Protest

New Delhi, March 11: Amid increasing outrage over the murder of a 21-year-old girl student of Delhi University, the residents of her area staged a road blockade here today demanding immediate arrest of her killer.

Upset over alleged police “inaction”, residents staged a protest and blocked the Outer Ring Road in Naraina in west Delhi this morning. Students also held protests in various colleges demanding the arrest of the culprit.

UGC identifies 21 fake universities, 350 unapproved institutions

New Delhi, March 10: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has identified 21 fake universities and educational institutions function in different parts of the country in contravention of the UGC Act, 1956.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Human Resource Development Smt. D. Purandeswari, in a written reply to a question, in the Lok Sabha today.

Out of the 21 fake universities and institutes, 8 are in Uttar Pradesh, 6 in Delhi and one each in Bihar, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

Notifications for Madrasas qualifications

New Delhi, march 10: In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, Minister of State for Human Resource Development (HRD) D. Purandeswari said that the HRD ministry and the Department of Personnel and Training have issued notifications on qualifications and certificates of the State Madrasa Boards that have been granted equivalence by the corresponding State Education Boards.

Foreign varsities bill opposed by MCI

New Delhi, March 10: The Foreign Educational Institutions (FEI) Bill that had been proposed by the government has been opposed by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

The bill had been proposed as a means to allow and regulate the entry and functioning of foreign universities in India.

The MCI had written to the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry regarding the bill, which is considered critical for several top foreign universities to partner with Indian institutions for setting up campuses in India.

Punjab varsity to hold job fest

Chandigarh, March 10: The Punjab Technical University (PTU) is holding a job fair from March 12-13 here, the first such event in collaboration with the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Thousands of students from nearly 300 colleges are expected to interact with companies.

According to university officials, over 25 companies have confirmed their participation.

“It will provide a wide range of opportunities to the students of PTU affiliated colleges,” said dean A.P. Singh.

Panel submits final blueprint of CET for central varsities

New Delhi, March 10: A panel of experts comprising of several vice-chancellors appointed by Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal have submitted their final report and blueprint to the minister regarding the common admission procedure that has been recommended for all central universities in India.

Goa to set up campus counseling centres

Panaji, March 10: The Goa cabinet on Wednesday approved setting up of counseling centres for students who are victims of stress, often linked to poor academic performance.

The decision comes less than 48 hours after a Class 12 girl student committed suicide after she answered the chemistry paper badly in the board examination.

Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said that Rs.1.14 crore has been set aside to set up campus counseling centres in government schools and state-aided schools.

CBI raids prominent Chandigarh school

Chandigarh, March 10: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday raided the reputed Strawberry Fields School here in Sector 24 and seized documents pertaining to land records and school finances, officials said.

According to CBI officials, they had received a complaint regarding discrepancies in land allotment and construction of the school building.

Hand-held home learning device for students launched

Hyderabad, March 10: Hyderabad-based Edutor Technologies on Tuesday launched Edutor Advantage e40, India’s first hand-held home learning device for school students.

After a six-month pilot project, the firm, floated by a group of young IITians, launched the device designed for Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) students from class 3 to class 10.

The touchscreen device is preloaded with a student’s class-specific, curriculum-aligned content.

Mother, daughter to appear for secondary exams in Bengal

Kolkata, March 10: Displaying a never-say-die spirit, Bharati Devi, a 40-year-old mother of three, is all set to appear for her secondary examinations this year along with her daughter in northern West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district.

Bharati, who works at a child education centre along with her married daughter Sanchita, is sitting for the examinations at Sunitibala Sadar Girls High School as an external candidate.

UAE committed to promote entrepreneurship – Minister

Abu Dhabi, March 10: The United Arab Emirates intends to promote entrepreneurship in the country and believes it should be made an integral part of the eduction system in the 21st century.

Delivering the keynote address at the inaugural meet on Entrepreneurship Education MENA (Middle East and North Africa region), Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, stressed upon making entrepreneurship an integral part of education in the new century.

Engineering aspirants’ details uploaded

New Delhi, March 10: The All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) has uploaded the particulars of all candidates on its website and asked them to check for any errors, an official said on Tuesday.

“The candidates are advised to verify their particulars on the website. If there is any variation in the particulars, it may be intimated to the board’s office by March 12,” an official said.

HRD ministry to tighten control over foreign education agents

New Delhi, March 10: In a bid to prevent an episode similar to the recent Tri Valley University incident repeating itself, the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has decided to tighten control over enrollment agents who facilitate admission of Indian students to universities abroad.

The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs is piloting an upcoming bill titled the Emigration Management Bill, in which the HRD ministry has mooted for changes.

Apex court nod for common MBBS entrance test

New Delhi, March 10: The Supreme Court Monday paved the way for implementing the Medical Council of India’s (MCI) notification providing for a common entrance test for undergraduate medical courses leading to the award of MBBS degrees.

An apex court bench of Justice R.V. Raveendran and Justice A.K. Patnaik, while giving the go ahead to the MCI, said that anyone aggrieved by the notification can challenge it in court.

AMU starts Murshidabad campus

Kolkata, March 10: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Sunday started classes from its Murshidabad campus in West Bengal with the first set of students for two-year MBA and five-year law programmes.

‘From today (Sunday) classes for the two-year MBA programme and the five-year B.A.(LLB) programmes have started,’ said P.K. Abdul Aziz, the AMU vice chancellor.

‘Right now the classes are going on in a rented two-storied building as the campus is not yet ready,’ said Aziz.

Kids of Mirchpur migrants finally admitted to school

Hisar, March 10: Children of Dalit families, who had left Mirchpur village in this Haryana district out of fear of the Jat community and are camping at the district headquarters for the last many days, have been finally admitted in a school.

These 32 children have taken admission at Raja Ram Memorial government school here after the intervention of Hisar administration officials. Their families are currently staying at a farm-house here.

So far many government and private schools had refused to admit these children as they do not wanted to offend the Jat community.

IGNOU holds conference on psychological measurement

New Delhi, March 10: “Modern societies, including India, are in a flux and need the intervention of disciplines like psychology to understand the complex problems and issues faced by people,” said Pro-VC Prof P.R. Ramanujam while inaugurating the two-day national conference on ‘Psychological Measurement: Strategies for the New Millennium’, organized by IGNOU’s School of Social Sciences (SOSS).

The conference, held at the Convention Centre on March 4 and 5, focused on two major concerns with regard to psychometry.

Three day programme on design, construction inaugurated at AMU

Aligarh, March 10: A three-day training programme on “Design and Construction of Flexible and Rigid Pavements” for engineers of rural engineering service of the government of Uttar Pradesh was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Inaugurating the three-day training programme, officiating Vice Chancellor, Prof. S. Abrar Hasan said that this type of training will be very useful to engineers associated with the rural engineering service for improving their skills.

CAG to submit audit report against 25 private schools

New Delhi, March 10: The Delhi High Court on Monday directed the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) to submit its audit report on 25 elite private schools that had complained of facing a financial burden because of having to pay teachers higher salaries recommended by the 6th Pay Commission.

Justcice A.K. Sikri and Justice Siddharth Mridul said, “CAG will have to submit its audit report by March 18. The Delhi government grievance department should also give us the details of complaint they have received from parents regarding fee hike issue in a year or two.”
