German resident returns heritage letters to Jamia

New Delhi, April 12: Rare calligraphic sheets and priceless letters, including those written by country’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, were gifted by a German national to Jamia Millia Islamia here.

Mustahsan Hamid Khan, a resident of Hattingen in Germany and an alumnus of the university, got articles after the death of his father.

When asked what prompted him to gift these to the university, Khan said, “I wanted to return the nation’s heritage back to Jamia, where it belonged.”

Ten Delhi schools get books from US embassy

New Delhi, April 12: Sally Roemer, wife of US ambassador Timothy Roemer, on Monday presented 1,000 books to 10 schools in the Indian capital.

“The books are a symbol of the friendship between US First Lady Michelle Obama and Gursharan Kaur (wife of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh),” a US embassy statement said.

The books represent a mix of story books and fun, informative non-fiction designed to introduce primary and secondary students to American history, culture and historical figures.

DU plans common entrance test for journalism

New Delhi, April 12: The University of Delhi (DU) has planned to conduct a common entrance test for the highly sought after B.A. (Hons.) Journalism course for the convenience of aspirants.

The five colleges that currently offer the course in Journalism at DU are Delhi College of Arts and Commerce, Kamala Nehru College, Lady Sri Ram College, Kalindi College and Maharaja Agrasen College. All these colleges are expected to be a part of the test that is scheduled to be conducted on June 19.

Punjab teachers union condemns Khalsa university move

Chandigarh, April 12: The Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) here on Monday condemned the Khalsa College Education Society’s proposal to set up a private university in place of the 120-year-old Khalsa College in Amritsar.

PCCTU members said replacing the college with a private university is an attempt to tamper with history and heritage of this institution of Punjab that is located in a heritage building.

IGNOU joins hands with leading bird conservatory organization

New Delhi, April 12: Indira Gandhi National Open University’s (IGNOU) Chair for Sustainable Development (CSD) has entered into a pact with the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), an organization under the Ministry of Environment and Forests, to offer programmes in the area of Environmental Impact Assessment and Ornithology.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by U.S. Tolia, Registrar, Administration, and Dr. P.A. Azeez of SACON, in the presence of Pro-Vice Chancellors Prof. Latha Pillai and Prof. P.R. Ramanujam.

Orissa’s campus-based radio to go on air

Bhubaneswar, April 12: Orissa’s first campus-based community radio station (CRS) at the prestigious Ravenshaw University in Cuttack city will go on air next week, a senior university official said on Friday.

The radio station, which has successfully completed over six months of dry run for around 12 hours a day, was originally scheduled to start its broadcast from April 1 on the occasion of Utkal Divas — the state’s formation day.

India, China at par in Malaysian English proficiency survey

Kuala Lumpur, April 12: India and China have been placed at par in an English language proficiency survey conducted here. It places Malaysia on top among all Asian nations and ninth globally.

While Prime Minister Najib Razak has said he is “proud” at Malaysia being placed on the top, The New Straits Times on Saturday expressed “surprise” at India being placed at a level similar to China.

Rajasthan to launch helpline for school kids

Jaipur, April 12: School children in Rajasthan will be able to file a complaint against corporal punishment or discrimination by their schools. The state government is planning to launch a helpline service for the purpose, an official said on Friday.

The education department, in a written direction, has also asked district education officers (DEO) to ensure deployment of a child rights supervisor at each school – private and government-run. The children will be able to approach the supervisor if their rights are violated.

Class X and XII results on May 20

New Delhi, April 12: Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is likely to declare class X and XII results on or before 20th May, 2011.

Students can see their result on the official website for CBSE at http://cbse.nic.in for their result and other updates.

DIETCET entrance test date postponed

Hyderabad, April 12: According to the report of Convenor DIETCET 2011 the date for DIETCET entrance exam has been postponed from April 24 to May 29.

The examination timings will be from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Candidates are advised to take note of the revised date.

Notification issued for MDS counseling

Hyderabad, April 12: Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences AP Vijaywada has announced the date of counseling for admissions into Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) course for the academic year 2011-12.

According to registrar NTRUHS Dr. T Venu Gopala Rao counseling will be held for physically challenged and all rank holders from 1 to 500 (open category) on April 18 at 9 am and for BC A, BC D E, SC, ST candidates on April 19 at 9 am.

D.Ed entrance date extended

Hyderabad, April 12: The last date for submission of forms for 2-year teacher training course D.Ed after intermediate has been extended till April 18.

The forms will now be available from April 13 at post offices and E-Seva centres.

The examination which was to be held on April 24 earlier is also postponed and the new date is likely to be finalized on the first or second Sunday of May.

Coaching for D.Ed entrance is being carried out at Mahboob Husain Jigar Hall Siasat premises Abids from 9 am to 12 noon.

Shimla, April 11: Chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal today laid the foundation stone of the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) and Polytechnic in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government Engineering and technology institute being set up at Pragti Nagar, 75 km from here in collaboration with Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN).The institute will be a three-tier institute providing courses as per ITI syllabus, Polytechnic and Engineering degrees, said the Chief Minister.

Teacher sends legal notice to students over complaint

Chandigarh, April 10 (IANS) A Panjab University (PU) history teacher has issued a legal notice to 17 students of his department asking them to take back their complaint filed against him of deliberately failing them.

A Few days back, 17 students of the history department had given a written complaint to the dean for university instructions (DUI) against Surinder Singh, in which they charged that he had deliberately failed them for the second time in the same exam.

Following this Surinder Singh sent a legal notice to the students, urging them to take back their complaint within 15 days.

4.85 lakh students appear for IIT entrance exam

New Delhi, April 10: Around 4.85 lakh students appeared for the joint entrance examination of the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT-JEE) Sunday for 9,600 seats in 15 premier institutions.

The exam will be held in two sessions – from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. – across 1,051 centres in 131 cities across the country, an official statement said. The results will be declared May 25.

For the first time, students will get to see scanned answer sheets online after the results are declared.

Hyderabad, April 9: ECIL Hyderabad recruits ITI (Electrical and mechanical) passed candidates for 40 vacant posts of turners, light machine mechanics, machinists and draughtsman mechanic. One year training will provided and a monthly stipend of Rs 1900 will be paid.

China to recruit 100,000 graduates at grassroots level

Beijing, April 09: China is planning to recruit 100,000 graduates by 2015 to work in grassroots units.

The plan is part of a national campaign to support education, agriculture, medical care and poverty alleviation in the rural and less-developed regions.

About 20,000 graduates will be recruited each year, Xinhua reported. However, the period of work would be two to three years.

The recruitment will take place after graduates submit voluntary applications and undergo public selection procedures.

Primary level English a waste of resources

Jeddah, April 09: A Shoura Council member has suggested stopping the teaching of English at elementary and intermediate levels and instead focus on Arabic.

According to local Arabic daily Al-Madinah, Ahmad Al-Mofreh, member of the council’s Education Committee, said English should instead be taught intensively at high school level to achieve positive results.

English has been taught in the sixth grade for nine years now. The Ministry of Education is currently moving toward teaching English as early as the fourth grade.

Premji Foundation to open school of education in Hyderabad

Bangalore, April 08: The Azim Premji Foundation, promoted by IT bellwether Wipro’s chairman Azim Premji, Wednesday tied up with Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) to set up a school of education at the latter’s campus in Hyderabad for offering degrees and other related programmes.

The foundation will provide financial support to the new school for infrastructure, programmes and to conduct research in the field of education.

Security escorts for DU girls now

New Delhi, April 08: Delhi University today said it will now provide a security cover for late evenings to girl students who stay in the nearby areas of the North Campus.

Security escorts on specified routes will now accompany women students who are occupied with academic work in their departments, libraries and research laboratories during late evening hours, a statement from the university said.

Some students work till late hours in the campus and feel unsafe while going to their residences in late evenings, it said.
