Terror accused hangs himself in Ghaziabad jail

Ghaziabad, June 20: A man suspected of involvement in the Frontier Mail blast in 1997 committed suicide by hanging himself in his prison cell in Ghaziabad, police said Saturday.

The death occurred Friday in the Dasna jail in Ghaziabad where Shakeel was lodged after he was convicted by a Delhi court to 10 years’ imprisonment in another terror related case in 1998. He was transferred to the Dasna jail in 2006 and the Frontier Mail blast case was pending against him, police said.

Unemployed man commits suicide

Jalandhar, June 20: An unemployed person today allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at his residence in Kartarpur area near here.

The deceased, identified as Palwinder Singh was mentally disturbed for the last few days as he was unemployed and took the extreme step due to frustration, police said.

A case of suicide has been registered, officials said.

Prostitution racket busted in Bhopal, 15 people arrested

Bhopal, June 20: An inter-state prostitution racket was busted in the Madhya Pradesh capital with the arrest of 15 people, including six girls, in the past two days, police here said Saturday.
“We have arrested 15 people, including six girls, in the last two days,” T.T. Nagar police station chief Umesh Tiwari said, adding that two of the girls are from Pune and Nagpur in Maharashtra. The girl from Pune told the police that she had been a bar girl and came here to make quick money, he added.

Kandivli contractor kills self

Mumbai, June 20: A 42-year-old labour contractor from Iraniwadi in Kandivli (W) ended his life recently as he did not have enough work for the last few days and his family was facing a financial crunch.

The deceased, Jayesh Karelia, was staying with his wife and son in a joint family and used to take up labour contracts for repairs. However, the lack of work had upset him, the police said. Recently, when his wife had asked him for Rs 700 for their son’s school expenses, Karelia did not have the money.

Italian police arrest 14 in crackdown on child pornography

Rome, June 20: Italian police have arrested 14 people and placed more than 250 under investigation in a major crackdown on online child pornography, Italian media reported Saturday.

The police operation was being carried out countrywide and involved the search of hundreds of homes, according to the reports. Authorities in Catania and Sicily were leading the investigation.

Five young men rape girl, circulate MMS

Mumbai, June 20: Five young men allegedly raped a 19-year-old college student and circulated a video clip of the assault in Maharashtra’s Thane district. Three men have been arrested, police said Saturday.

On May 14 the girl accompanied one of the accused to a room in Hotel Sai Pooja in Thane on the outskirts of Mumbai when she was allegedly raped by five men. However, a complaint was lodged by the girl June 19.

Man rapes, kills kid, drinks her blood

Bhubaneshwar, June 20: In a gruesome incident, a domestic help allegedly raped and murdered a four-year-old girl at Hetampur village in Bhadrak district, about 160 km from here, on Wednesday evening. He later drank her blood.

The accused, Kalandi Palai alias Kalia, was arrested on Thursday and confessed to the crime during police interrogation the same day. “Kalia has confessed, but the medical examination report is awaited,” Bhadrak superintendent of police Kishore Kumar Dangayat said.

Eight-year-old booked under gangster act in UP

Lucknow, June 20: An eight-year-old boy has been booked under the Goonda Act – a tough anti-gangster law, in Uttar Pradesh. The police today promised an inquiry into the matter.

Jagannath, a resident of Baghauli village in Hardoi district, was booked under the law about four months ago after his family was involved in a row with a neighbour. The Goonda Act provides for preventive detention up to three months and imposes stringent conditions for bail.

Cash, gold worth Rs30m stolen from bank

Thiruvananthapuram, June 20: Police in Kerala are looking for a gang that looted over Rs30 million (Dh2.13 million) from a bank, and have spread their investigations into neighbouring Karnataka as well.

Gold and cash worth over Rs30 million were stolen on Thursday morning from a branch of the North Malabar Gramin Bank.

The incident has raised concerns considering that there has been a series of such thefts in different banks in the state in recent times.

Engineering student gangraped in Mumbai

Mumbai, June 20: A second year engineering student was allegedly raped by a group of youngsters, two of whom were arrested by the police on Friday, on a complaint filed by the victim.

Meera road police filed a complaint against seven boys for allegedly raping her and shooting her MMS. The MMS was circulated amongst the students of the college, said sources.

18-year-old domestic help held hostage, raped by employer

New Delhi, June 20: An 18-year-old domestic help was allegedly held hostage for three days and raped by her 50-year-old employer in Rajouri Garden area of West Delhi.

Police officers said the victim managed to escape on Thursday night and filed a complaint at the local police station.

According to police officers investigating the case, the victim is a resident of West Bengal. Accused Paramjeet Singh, a widower, had employed her through a placement agency in Rajouri Garden around three days ago.

Four arrested for Bhajanpura petrol pump murder, robbery

New Delhi, June 20: Four days after an employee of a petrol pump in Bhajanpura was robbed and murdered, the South Delhi police have arrested four people they claim were the assailants.

On June 15, petrol pump employee Baldev Singh was killed and Rs 8.5 lakh in cash robbed from him when he was on his way to deposit the money in a bank, just across the road from the pump.

Six students, teacher killed in mishap

Rewari, June 19: Six students returning to school after summer vacation and their teacher have been killed in a road mishap on Singhana-Jhunjhunoo road, police said today.

Of the deceased students, four belonged to this district while their friends hailed from a Rajasthan village. They were going back to Arvind Residential Public School at Jhunjhunoo in Rajasthan when their jeep collided with a truck yesterday.

The deceased school teacher was identified as Satender Manju, while four students hailing from here were Deepak, Pankaj, Baljit and Sachin.

Woman molested in Lucknow

Lucknow, June 19: A 27-year-old Danish woman was allegedly molested while travelling in a city bus here.

State Women’s Commission has sought a report from the UP police chief and Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) officials over the alleged molestation of the 27-year-old from Denmark, who was working here on a research project, while commuting between Hazratganj and Indira Nagar on June 17.

Though no FIR was lodged by the woman, she wrote a letter to the Director General of Police and the SWC narrating the incident before leaving Lucknow yesterday morning, official sources said.

Child drowns in water tank

Dehradun, June 19: A five-year-old boy playing at his father’s work place drowned in a water tank at Ajabpur area here, police today said.

The incident took place yesterday when Vikas was playing in an under-construction house where his father Mithilesh was working as a labourer.

The child was missing for a long time and in the subsequent search, his family found him lying in the tank.

He was soon rushed to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Four arrested for murdering war veteran

New Delhi, June 19: Four persons, including a debt- ridden driver, have been arrested for allegedly murdering and looting over Rs 8 lakh from a Kargil war veteran who tried to resist their robbery bid, police said here today.

The four-prime accused Rakesh Kumar (29) and his associates Harish Gupta, Vinay Bhargava, and Basant Kumar-Swere arrested last night from Karbala area in Lodhi colony, Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal told reporters.

Kasliwal rape case: accused identified

Mumbai, June 19: A 55-year-old woman, who had accused Abhishek Kasliwal, son of Sriram Mills owner, of raping her, today identified him in the court as the culprit.

The victim, who had gone missing soon after the incident in March 2006, had been traced by police last week.

She appeared before the trial court today and was examined by the prosecution.

The victim told the court how the accused “picked” her up from Colaba in his car and took her to the campus of Sriram Mills in Worli and allegedly raped her.

The prosecution will continue examination of the victim on July 2.

Gang posing as police escapes with Rs. 50 lakh

Chennai, June 19: Four men posing as police personnel intercepted a car near the Vepery police station here on Wednesday evening and allegedly relieved an occupant in the vehicle of Rs.50 lakh.

According to police sources, Kamalraj (25) of Pulianthope, employee of a steel store in Sowcarpet, was going to the shop from his owner’s house in Kilpauk with the cash in the car.

The accused stopped the car on Narayanasamy Street and started checking the vehicle. They told Kamalraj that they were part of a special team from the office of the Commissioner of Police.

Arms seized from NCP leader Padamsinh Patil’s home

Mumbai,June 19: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has seized a large quantity of arms and ammunition as well as incriminating documents from two houses owned by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Padamsinh Patil, accused of murdering his cousin and his driver.

A CBI team supervised by Western Region Joint Director Rishi Raj Singh raided two apartments owned by Patil in Colaba in south Mumbai late on Thursday, a CBI source said.

British girl raped in Himachal

Shimla, June 19: A foreign girl has been raped in Palampur of Himachal Pradesh. The medical report has confirmed the rape.

According to sources, an eighteen year girl who has come from England to teach the poor Indian children in Palampur, underwent the heinous crime.

The girl told the police that she had gone for shopping near a cafe house, two taxi drivers who were in the age group of 22 to 23 yrs offered the lift. The taxi drivers took her to a deserted place and then raped her.

IAS officer suspended for alleged sexual harassment

Bhopal, June 19: IAS officer Gyaneshwar Patil was suspended Friday, for alleged sexual harassment of his secretary.

CEO district Panchayat Gyaneshwar Patil was caught red-handedly by the media persons Thursday night in an ‘awkward position’ in the office toilet with secreatry. The state government suspended the officer and assured thorough enquiry in the case.

Youth kills grandparents for objecting to smoking

Lucknow, June 19: An 18-year-old youth killed his grandparents in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district after they objected to his smoking inside the house, police said Friday.

The killings took place in the Bauara village of Ballia, 300 km from state capital Lucknow, Thursday.

‘Ramdhar and Radhika caught their grandson smoking in the house and raised objections. In a fit of rage, Jugnu killed both of them with a knife,’ police inspector N.S. Yadav told reporters in Ballia.

Pregnant woman thrown out of running train

Lucknow, June 19: A pregnant woman and her three-year-old daughter were allegedly thrown out of a running train in Lakhimpur Kheri district by two constables
of the railway police, official sources said in Lucknow on Friday.

While the woman died, her daughter escaped with minor injuries.

The incident took place on Thursday when Dinesh Kumar boarded the Mailani-Gonda passenger train along with his wife Kavita and the child.

Robbers Killed Indian Origin Youth In US

Washington, June 19: A 26-year-old Indian origin youth working as a clerk in a convenience store was allegedly shot dead by robbers.

Gurjeet Singh of Merriville, Indiana who worked in his uncle’s gas station was shot dead by four armed robbers on June 14.

Community activists have expressed outrage over the senseless murder and “insensitive and shocking” behaviour of shoppers who made no effort to help him or call the police after the incident.
