Nine injured in road mishap

Satna, June 23: Nine people of a family were injured when their jeep rammed into a truck trailer at Tighara area in Satna town in this district, police said today.

The family was returning here after visiting Sharda Devi temple at Maihar last night when the truck trailer moving ahead of them suddenly applied brakes. The jeep collided with the truck trailer.

Anurag Nigam was seriously injured and sent to Jabalpur for treatment. Other injured were admitted to government hospital.

Woman alleges rape by SHO, four others in Delhi

New Delhi, June 23: A woman Tuesday claimed she was raped by a Station House Officer and four others in a police station in south-west Delhi, triggering protests with scores of people pelting stones at the building.

The woman, who resides in a slum in Inderpuri, had alleged that she was taken to the Inderpuri police station last night to enquire about her husband, who was allegedly involved in betting cases.

She claimed that she was sexually assaulted by the SHO and four others who later threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed the incident to anyone.

47 children killed in day care fire in Mexico; Nine officials arrested

Mexico, June 23: Seven state and two federal officials were arrested on Monday and nine others were being sought on negligent homicide charges in a day care fire that killed 47 children in northern Mexico.

The state officials worked for the Sonora Finance Department, which operated an adjacent warehouse for cars, tires and paperwork. Investigators say the fire may have started with a short circuit or overheating in the air conditioning system of the warehouse, which lacked fire alarms and extinguishers. Flames spread to the neighboring ABC day care center.

Techie held for stealing source code worth Rs 46.5 cr

New Delhi, June 23: The economic offences wing (EOW) of the Pune police arrested a software engineer Asma Sandip Thorve (37), a resident of Uday Society in Sahkar Nagar, for allegedly cheating Brainvisa Technologies to the tune of Rs 46.5 crores, by stealing their source code. Earlier, the police had arrested software engineer Sameer Ashok Inamdar (36) of Kondhwa in the same case.

Fire breaks out at warehouse in Gurgaon

Gurgaon, June 23: A fire today broke out at a warehouse in the district, fire brigade officials said.

The fire broke out in the Adidas warehouse located at village Khekridhaula near the Hero Honda chowk at around 4:30 pm, officials said.

They said the blaze was still continuing and more than 25 tenders have been rushed to extinguish it.

Fire brigade officials, were, however, unable to give any details of casualties and the reason behind the blaze.

Two taxi drivers in judicial custody for British girl’s rape

Shimla, June 23: A court in Himachal Pradesh sent two taxi drivers, accused of raping an 18-year-old British volunteer teacher at Palampur town, to 13-day judicial remand, police said.

The volunteer, who was teaching underprivileged children in the region as part of an exchange programme, was allegedly abducted and raped by local residents taxi-owner Rakesh Kumar, 28, and his friend Sunil 26.

“Both the accused were sent to judicial remand for 13 days by a court in Palampur Monday,” investigating officer Shiv Chand said by phone.

Earlier, the court had sent them to police custody.

HIV+ve prisoner who cried for treatment is dead

Mumbai, June 23: A 30-year-old prisoner, whose petition in the Bombay high court had highlighted the lack of medical treatment for HIV-positive inmates in Maharashtra’s jails, has died of Aids at Pune’s Yerwada prison.

His application had prompted the HC to set up a committee to look into the lack of medical facilities for HIV-positive prisoners.

Class 10 student commits ’suicide’ in Himachal school

Shimla, June 23: A Class 10 student of a prestigious school in Himachal Pradesh allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the school toilet, police said Monday.

“A student of Class 10 of Akal Academy at Baru Sahib allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the school toilet Sunday,” Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) B.K. Dhiman told IANS on phone.

He said the victim, Karan Singh, belonged to Kharar town in Punjab. Baru Sahib is in Sirmaur district, some 120 km from here.

Three terrorists killed in Jammu

Jammu, June 22: Three terrorists were killed in a day-long fierce gun-battle in Gulabgarh area in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district Monday, police said.
The three militants belonged to Hizb-ul-Mujahadeen, a police spokesman said.

A huge quantity of arms and ammunition has been recovered from the site, deep in jungles in Gulabargh area, 150 km north of Jammu.

“The searches are still on,” a police official said.

Raipur, June 22: Three members of a family were killed in their sleep and another injured in a village in Chhattisgarh Monday in an attack police ascribed to an old enmity, triggering tension in the area. Police reinforcements were rushed to the village to prevent reprisals.
Officials at the Police Headquarters said that additional forces were deployed at Beltara village under Ratanpur police station, some 140 km from here, after the brutal murder of three people in the early hours Monday when they were sleeping on the roof of their house.

Srinagar, June 22: The Jammu and Kashmir government suspended four police officers and a forensic scientist Monday, a day after the one-man probe commission criticised them for “committing lapses” which led to the “loss of vital evidence” in the Shopian rape and murder case.

Superintendent of Police Javed Iqbal Matoo, his deputy, a station house officer and an assistant sub-inspector have been suspended after they were found to have “destroyed the evidence”, well informed sources told.

New Delhi, June 22: An assistant manager of Citibank’s Ludhiana branch has been arrested along with his two accomplices for committing fraud to the tune of Rs. 10 million, police said Monday.

Sleuths of Delhi Police’s Crime Branch arrested Ramneek Kapoor, said to be the mastermind of the scam, along with a father-son duo, Kanwaljit Singh Saluja and Jasmeet Singh, last week from Ahmedabad after registering a case against them June 1 in the national capital.

Chargesheet Against 5 Youths filed in Soumya murder case

New Delhi, June 22 :Delhi Police on Monday filed a 620- page chargesheet against five youths arrested in connection with the murder of TV journalist Soumya Viswanathan.

All the five persons — Ravi Kapoor, Ajay Sethi, Amit Shukla, Baljit Malik and Ajay Kumar — have also been booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

10 die of sultry weather in UP

Lucknow, June 22: At least 10 people have died of heat wave and blistering weather conditions in Uttar Pradesh overnight.

Reports reaching the state headquarters here, stated that people, especially the homeless, were dying of intensive heat during the daytime.

Two each died in Ayodhya, Bahraich and Siddharthnagar today, while one each died of scalding weather conditions in Bareilly, Sultanpur, Varanasi and Kanpur.

Shiney’s case will be ‘examined’, if referred: Centre

New Delhi, June 22: The Centre today said it would “examine” the case in which a domestic help has accused Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja of raping her for necessary action if it was referred to it.

“We would examine the case if the complaint is sent to us,” Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge told reporters here on the sidelines of a function.

“If the case is sent to Labour departments, we will examine whether the case is violation of labour laws or a case of sexual harassment,” he said when asked how the Ministry would deal with the matter.

Jet pilot found dead in African envoy’s farmhouse

New Delhi, June 22: A 23-year-old Jet Airways pilot was found dead in a swimming pool in the Kapashera area of Southwest Delhi on Sunday.

Kunal Batra, a pilot with Jet Airways was at a farmhouse party at the house of the honorary consul of Togo, according to reports.

His body was found in the water at around 0400 hrs IST. The post mortem report says death was due to drowning.

Police are investigating several possibilities, but Kunal’s parents say he didn’t know how to swim and that it was an unfortunate accident.
