‘Harassed for dowry’ woman jumps to death from Ghaziabad mall

Ghaziabad, June 25: A 23-year-old married woman jumped to death from the third floor of a mall on the Delhi-Ghaziabad border Wednesday afternoon, police said, suspecting it to be a “case of dowry-harassment” by her in-laws driving her to commit suicide.
Saraswati had gone to the East Delhi Mall (EDM) in Kaushambi Towers with her husband Dhirendra Kumar, a property dealer of Bhovapur locality in Ghaziabad.

Two dead as Delhi bus fells into trench

New Delhi, June 24: Two people died and several suffered injuries when a chartered, privately operated bus in which they were traveling Wednesday evening slipped off a road into a 20-25 feet deep trench near the Akshardham temple in east Delhi, police said.

The bus, going from Okhla to Dilshad Garden, met with the accident when driver Raj Bahadur, 35, lost control over the wheel while trying to save a child crossing the road in Pandav Nagar area near Noida Mor around 7.15 p.m.

‘Depressed’ over losing job,software engineer from Maharashtra ends life

Hyderabad, June 24: Allegedly depressed over losing his job, a software engineer “ended his life” by hanging himself at Kachiguda here, police said today. Sachin B Khandewar (29), a native of Solapur in Maharashtra hanged himself, by using a nylon rope, to the ceiling fan in his room between 11.15 pm and 12.00 pm last night, Kachiguda police said.

Sachin’s relatives came to know about the incident at about 6.30 am today after one of his aunts noticed his body hanging in the room, an investigation officer said.

Couple held for kidnapping child from India Gate

New Delhi, June 24: A couple who allegedly kidnapped a two-year-old girl from India Gate Thursday last week and abandoned her a day later, has been arrested, police said Wednesday.

Jugal Kishore and Rekha were caught by a team of Delhi Police from outside the national capital. The police, however, refused to say from where and when the couple were arrested.

“We are taking the couple to Delhi,” a senior police officer said.

The girl, Gungun, was found at a temple in central Delhi’s Jhandewalan 40 hours after she went missing from India Gate lawns Thursday.

2nd gangrape: Woman accuses husband’s friend of rape

New Delhi, June 24: In the second incident of gangrape reported in the capital in as many days, a 22-year-old woman has alleged that she was assaulted by three men in her east Delhi home, police said on Wednesday.

According to the woman, three men, including her husband’s friend, raped her when she was alone at her Bholanath Nagar residence in east Delhi Tuesday evening.

“I was alone when they entered into the house on the pretext of meeting my husband. They raped and threatened of dire consequences if I said anything about it,” the woman said in her police complaint.

Two arrested for alleged rape of minor in Surat

Surat, June 24: Two persons have been arrested for alleged abduction and rape of a minor girl in Surat, police said on Wednesday.

The duo identified as Vishnu Chauhan and Kanti Chauhan had allegedly abducted and raped the 14-year-old victim on June 18 after drugging her, according to the complaint filed by the maternal uncle of the girl, on Tuesday evening.

The girl, hailing from Anand district, apparently had a relationship with Vishnu, police said. When her parents came to know about them, they sent the girl to her uncle’s place in Surat, they said.

Shiv Sena protests power hike in Mumbai, 35 injured

Mumbai, June 24: At least 35 people, including eight women, were injured Wednesday when police baton charged Shiv Sena workers protesting hike in power tariff in this Maharashtra city, police said.

The police detained Shiv Sena leaders Subhash Desai, former MP Suresh Prabhu, and former minister Gajanan Kirtikar who were leading the protestors in different parts of the city.

Police baton charged agitators when they barged into a Reliance Power office in Goregaon, an official said.

Woman loses eye sight over fight

Gangtok, June 24: A housewife lost sight in her right eye in a fight with three teenage girls over a loud party in her house in Arithang locality of the Sikkim capital, police said on Wednesday.

The accused teenagers have been arrested on charges of grievous assault on their neighbour.

An argument erupted between the accused and the victim, who reside in the same building in Arithang, when the housewife had some guests over in her apartment Tuesday evening. The teenage trio complained that the party was too loud and disturbing.

Man murders pregnant wife, commits suicide

Mumbai, June 24: A man allegedly murdered his pregnant wife by hitting her with iron rod on the head, and later hanged himself at Manubai Javala area in Gevrai tehsil in this district.

Police said Mahadev Kamble (30) had married Mangla five years ago and also had a one-and-a-half-year old son.

The couple fought frequently as Mahadev suspected Mangla’s character. Yesterday, their tiff reached its peak and Mahadev ended up hitting Mangla, who was pregnant, on her head with a iron rod, police said.

Couple arrested for kidnapping two-year-old girl

New Delhi, Jun 24: A couple, who allegedly kidnapped a two-year-old girl from India Gate on Thursday last week and let her off after a day, have been arrested, police sources said today.

The couple Jugal Kishore and Rekha, who had gone out of Delhi after the girl’s missing case hogged limelight, was caught by a team of Delhi Police from outside the national capital, they said.

They are being taken to the capital, they said without revealing from where the couple was picked up.

Woman gangraped in east Delhi home

New Delhi, June 24: A 22-year-old woman was raped allegedly by three men, including her husband’s friend, in her east Delhi residence, police said today.

The incident was reported from Bholanath locality last evening.

The three men came to her residence on the pretext of meeting her husband and then allegedly raped her, a senior police official said.

According to the woman’s statement, the three raped her and threatened her of dire consequences if she made a noise.

Her husband claimed that he came back home in the night and found his wife crying.

About 20 raped in failed prison break in Congo

Kinshasa, June 24: Two people were killed and 12 others injured in the Democratic Republic of Congo when prison inmates who tried to escape detonated two grenades.

About 20 female prisoners were also raped during the failed prison break attempt, according to Congo’s attorney general.

The female prisoners were raped when male prisoners in the prison in Goma in eastern Congo failed to break through the prison’s walls, Oscar Kasangandjo said on Tuesday.

The prisoners attacked the pavilion where the female prisoners were being held and raped around 20 of them, he added.

Woman constable murdered at home

Punjab, June 24: A woman constable of Punjab Home Guards was stabbed to death, allegedly by her uncle, at her house in Kila Mohalla on Tuesday afternoon. The accused was caught by area residents as he tried to flee after the crime.

Constable Neelam Rani (36) was posted at the Division Number 8 police station. Mother of a 17-year-old son, she was reportedly separated from her husband.

Mob fury after Delhi woman alleges rape by policemen

New Delhi, June 24: A woman has alleged she was gang raped by five policemen, including an officer, inside a police station in southwest Delhi, but the cops refused to register a complaint. This prompted an irate mob to pelt the police station with stones on Tuesday.

The woman, who resides in a slum cluster nearby, alleged that the station house officer (SHO) of Inderpuri along with four other policemen raped her inside the police station on Monday. The SHO has been temporarily relieved of his duty, police said.

Nun identifies main accused

Bhubaneswar, June 24: In a major development in the Kandhamal nun rape case, the victim nun has identified the main accused in a test identification parade, the second such parade related to the case.

According to the officials, the first TIP was held at Cuttack on January 5 where the victim had identified two youths.

Though the CB arrested seven more accused persons in the rape case since a month, it could not conduct the TIP as the victim was reluctant to visit Kandhamal again.

Techie cuts cook’s husband into pieces, arrested

New Delhi, June 24:A 26-year-old software professional was arrested Tuesday for allegedly murdering the husband of his cook, with whom he had illicit relations, Delhi Police said.

Rahul Dev, who is from Bokaro in Jharkhand, was arrested when he was stuffing his victim Diwakar Choudhary’s body into a gunny bag in his rented house in Pitampura in northwest Delhi around 2.30 a.m.

Police said Rahul, who is currently jobless, first slit Choudhary’s throat and then stabbed him with a butcher’s knife.

Woman promised marriage, sexually exploited

Noida, June 23: A woman from Maharashtra, who left her family to look for a job in Delhi, was allegedly repeatedly raped by a bus owner, who befriended her and offered to marry her, police said.

The woman from Amravati came to Delhi in search of a job. She met Rishi Raj, a private bus owner, who assured her help in getting a job.

The two developed friendship and Rishi Raj offered to marry her, and allegedly sexually exploited her several times. Later, he refused to marry her.

Student found dead in school bathroom, family alleges ragging

Shimla, June 23: The body of a 10th standard student from Punjab was found in the bathroom of a residential school here and his family alleged he could have been a victim of ragging.

According to a case registered at Pachhad police station under Rajgarh sub-division, the student Karm Singh, a resident of Kharar in Punjab, was found dead in the bathroom of the Badu Saheb Akal Academy School hostel on Sunday.

The academy authority believing that it was a case of suicide did not inform the police about the incident and took the body to his family in Kharar on Sunday, police said.

Delhi woman accuses policemen of rape, sparks mob fury

New Delhi, June 23: An angry mob Tuesday hurled bricks and stones at a Delhi police station after a woman accused the station house officer and four constables of raping her. The Crime Branch has launched a probe while a preliminary medical report has ruled out rape.

The woman alleged that Station House Officer Pradeep Kumar and four constables raped her on the second floor of the Inderpuri police station Monday afternoon. She resides in E block of the colony.

Couple dies, son seriously hurt in accident

Sangrur, June 23: A man and his wife were killed while their son was seriously injured when their car collided with a Punjab Roadways bus near Mauran village in the district today.

Gurbachan Singh (38) and his wife (36), residents of Patran town, died on the spot when their car collided with a Punjab Roadways bus coming from the opposite direction. Their son Manavjeet Singh (7), who was seriously injured in the incident, was admitted to Sangrur civil hospital. The family had gone to Mastuana Sahib and were coming back to Patran when the incident occurred.

4 students killed in road accident

Nashik, June 23: Four school children, including two girls, were killed and eight others injured when an auto-rickshaw in which they were travelling collided with a jeep, coming from the opposite direction, near Jaykheda village on the Satana-Jaykheda road in Satana tehsil today.

According to police, the autorickshaw was on its way to a school at Tahrabad, when the mishap took place this morning.

The deceased were identified as Nitu Rajendra Deore (9), Tanishq Sampat Deore (5), Lalit Anil Deore (6) and Priyanka Anil Deore (10).

Two die after offering prayers at Amarnath shrine

Srinagar, June 23: Two pilgrims, including a woman, died of a cardiac arrest after offering prayers at the holy cave shrine of Amarnath, raising the death toll during the ongoing yatra to five, official sources said Tuesday.

Lekh Ram (62), a resident of Rajasthan, died at the 3,880 metre holy cave, 120 kms from here, after having darshan of the naturally formed ice-shivlingam last night, the sources said.
