CBI initiates inquiry in Rs 1.73 cr seizure

Mumbai, March 22: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated an inquiry into the Rs 1.73 crore cash seizure from a customs house agent’s residence.

A large part of the cash, seized on February 3 from the residence of CHA Rajiv Gulati, was suspected to be belonging to four Customs officials – a deputy commissioner and three appraisers. CBI officials on Friday visited Customs House at Ballard Pier and collected documents related to these four officials.

Jewellery store looted

Mumbai, March 22: An unidentified person broke into a jewellery shop near a police outpost in Khar, and fled with ornaments worth more than Rs 25 lakh.

The accused, however, could not escape the closed-circuit television cameras installed in Ambika Jewellers.

The CCTVs have captured his images and the police have launched a hunt for the thief. The policemen posted at the chowkie, which is barely five metres away from the store, were on patrolling duty at the time of the incident, police said.

Youth kills self, family dispute suspected

Kanpur, March 22: The body of 24-year-old youth was found hanging from a pipal tree in Chunniganj area’s Nagar Nigam Park.

Rajesh Kumar Valmiki, who had not visited his Sudarshan Nagar residence for the last few days, was found hanging from a towel. Apart from a deep mark on the neck region, no other injuries were visible on his body. While the body has been sent for postmortem, the Colonelganj police suspect that Valmiki committed suicide due to differences with his family. No suicide note has been recovered.

3 IAF hostel boys drown in river

Chandigarh, March 22: The three victims, along with a friend, had taken permission from the hostel authorities to visit Rock Garden in Chandigarh, the police said. But the four, who drove on two motorcycles, reached Parwanoo in the afternoon.

According to the police, as they did not know how to swim, Ankur Singh, Pankaj Patial and Naveen entered the shallow waters of the river and started posing for pictures. Their friend Vikas Kumar was clicking their pictures, while sitting on the river banks.

3 youths drown in Himachal

Chandigarh, March 22: Three youths from this union territory drowned in a Himachal Pradesh rivulet while on a trip, police said Sunday.
The deceased, wards of serving defence officials, were staying in a hostel at 3 Base Repair Depot (BRD) of the Indian Air Force here. The hostel is meant for the children of defence officials serving at other stations.

Police remand of suspected BKI ultras extended

Mohali, March 21: Police remand of two suspected militants of Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), who were arrested during a joint operation conducted by Mohali and Delhi (Special Cell) police, was today extended for another two days by a Dera Bassi court near here.

Two BKI ultras identified as Daljit Kumar alias Deepak, and Purshotam Singh alias Bunty, were arrested from near Nabha Sahib gurdwara on Zirakpur-Patiala National Highway late on Thursday night.

Two men shot at in south Delhi

New Delhi, March 21: A property dealer whom the police have declared as a ‘bad character’ and his domestic help were today shot at in south-east Delhi, police said.

The incident was reported from Kalkaji area when a woman constable, Seema, noticed two men lying in a pool of blood in Kalkaji around 1 AM.

The victims were identified as Anup Kumar Juneja and his servant, Dilip.

Juneja, against whom there are over 40 cases, has been earlier declared a ‘bad character’ by police.

Juneja suffered a bullet injury in his stomach while Dilip was shot at in his neck.

4 killed, 2 injured as jeep overturns

Morena (MP), March 21: Four persons, including a woman, were today killed and two others seriously injured when the jeep in which they were travelling overturned near Kailaras, about 60 kms from here, police said.

The incident took place when the victims were returning from Kaila Devi Temple at Karoli in Rajasthan, they said.

A tyre of the ill-fated jeep burst following which it overturned, killing four persons on the spot.

The deceased were identified as Ashok Singh Sikarwar, Rachna Singh, her son Rohit and nephew Neeraj, police said.

Domestic help commits suicide

Srinagar, March 21: A youth hailing from Bihar allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at a house in Anantnag where he was working as a domestic help, police said today.

Govind Ram, 22, was found hanging at the house of Dr Nazir Ahmad at Gulshanabad, 60 kms from here, last night. He picked up work at the doctor’s place six months back.

Police said Ram was alone in the house and was found dead by the doctor on his return from the hospital.

The motive behind his suicide was not immediately known, they said.

BJP worker attempts to commit suicide

New Delhi, March 21: A 35-year-old BJP worker attempted to commit suicide here this evening apparently due to family problems, police said.

Rajni Kulshektra, an unmarried woman, set herself afire at her residence in Shahdara.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she is undergoing treatment.

She had suffered 70 per cent injuries.

Police said family problems is said to be the reason behind Rajni attempting to take her own life.

Heroin worth Rs 130 crore seized; five arrested

Amritsar, March 21: Punjab police today claimed to have seized 26 kg heroin, estimated to be worth Rs 130 crore in the international market, after a brief encounter with a gang of drug smugglers in which five cops were injured.

The Special Operation Cell of Intelligence Wing of Punjab police recovered an automatic Chinese-made pistol and other weapons from the six gang members following the encounter in neighboring Tarn Taran district, police said.

Five of them were arrested while a notorious smuggler identified as Gurpreet Singh escaped, they said.

Fake employment racket busted in UP

Lucknow, March 21: Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force has arrested four members of a gang which allegedly duped youths on the pretext of providing them jobs in Army and police force.

Rishi Dixit, Satyapal Singh, Manoj Kumar Singh and Gyan Rakash Varma were arrested from Gol Market crossing last night when they were allegedly taking money from a youth aspiring to get a job in state police, they said.

The youth had informed the STF in this connection.

Encounter between Maoists and Joint Forces in Bankura

Bankura (WB) March 21: An encounter broke out between Maoists and the joint security forces today after the ultras detonated two landmines and tried to prevent the forces from resetting a camp in Bhalukchera in the district.

Maoists exploded two landmines at around 12 noon to scare away the joint forces who were setting up the camp after it was dismantled earlier, Bankura Superintendent of Police Vishal Garg said.

The security forces retaliated and the encounter lasted till 4 pm, he said, adding there was no immediate report of any casualty.

2 killed in road accidents in Punjab

Phagwara, march 21: Two people were killed and another injured in separate road accidents in Punjab.

Vijay Kumar, 13, of Palahai village died on the spot and Rohit, of the same village, was badly injured when a speeding jeep hit their cycle when they were returning home last night. The injured was admitted to a local civil hospital.

Police have registered a case in this regard. The driver of the vehicle has been arrested and the police has impounded the vehicle.

US national dies after falling from five-star hotel

Mumbai, March 21: A 40-year-old US national employed with the Northwest Airlines died after falling down from the terrace of a suburban five-star hotel.

The victim, Momsen Crudez, a cabin crew member of Northwest Airlines, was staying at the Renaissance Hotel in suburban Powai.

“Last night, an inebriated Momsen opened the window of the lobby of the hotel and went to the terrace. He then jumped out of the terrace which was over 30 feet above ground,” police officials said.

Momsen was rushed to the nearby Hiranandani hospital.

LoC trade money being used to finance LeT in J&K: Police

Jammu, March 21: Some people associated with cross-LoC trade are indulging in providing ‘hawala’ money to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants for terror activities in Kashmir Valley, police have claimed.

This came to light following the arrest of five people in a case in which Rs13,85,000 obtained from sale of goods sent from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) was allegedly distributed among terrorists and others associated with LeT outfit for terrorist activities in the Valley, they said.

18 kg narcotics seized, one held in Jammu

Jammu, March 21: Police today claimed to have seized 18 kg narcotics in separate incidents and arrested a man in this connection in Jammu district.

An unclaimed bag was found at the railway station here last night and on examining it, police recovered 17.5 kgs of ‘hashish’, they said, adding a case has been registered.

In another incident, Abdul Gani, an alleged narcotics smuggler, was arrested from Nagrota area and around 400 grams of cannabis was seized from him, they said.

Nurse chops off baby’s finger

Kolkata, March 21: An infant girl’s finger was severed allegedly due to medical negligence by a nurse at a child health institute here.

Authorities at Institute of Child Health told PTI today that the nurse had “unwittingly applied the scissors on the little finger of the baby’s right hand while removing the plaster on the channel areas meant for saline administration.”

However, the parents of the one-month-old baby had alleged that the nurse was talking on mobile phone while attending on the child on Friday.

8 injured as cable burst in mini plant

Jamshedpur, March 21: At least eight labourers were today injured, one of them seriously, when a cable burst in a mini plant in East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.

The power cable, illegally wired with a transformer to supply electricity to Himadari Steel Private Ltd at Chakulia, suddenly exploded injuring eight labourers, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Ghatsila), Anup Birtheray said.

Man wanted in robbery cases arrested

Mumbai, March 21: An alleged robber, who claims to be a modern day Robinhood, was today arrested after being on the run for several years, police said.

Mani Kandan (36), wanted in over 15 cases of robbery and house breaking cases, was today arrested by the suburban Chembur unit of the city police.

“Mani has told his interrogators that he considers himself to be Robinhood who steals from the rich and distributes the loot amongst the needy and poor,” a senior police officer said.

Maoists kill man suspecting him to be police informer

Malkangiri (Orissa), March 21: Maoists have killed a man in Orissa’s Malkangiri district, suspecting him to be a police informer, police said today.

The victim, identified as Nityananda Nag (50), was forcibly taken away from his house by a group of ultras late last night and his body was found this morning near Kutuguda in Kalimela area, about 50 kms from here, they said.

Nag’s head was smashed with some blunt object, they said, adding the body has been sent for post-mortem.

The ultras killed Nag as they suspected that he was operating as a police informer, they said.

Bullet accidentally hits BJP leader at party function

Morena (MP), March 21: A local BJP leader was today seriously injured after he was accidentally hit by a bullet fired to welcome party’s newly-appointed General Secretary Narendra Singh Tomar at a town near here.

Tomar was being given a gun salute by party workers on his arrival at Ambah town when one of the bullets accidentally hit BJP’s divisional unit vice president Subhash Sharma in the leg causing serious injuries, police said.

Sharma was rushed to primary health centre and then to Morena district hospital, which finally referred him to Gwalior Medical College Hospital.

Shopian doctor caught on camera having sex

Srinagar, March 22: A major sex scandal has rocked Jammu and Kashmir after an MMS clip allegedly featuring a senior doctor, charge-sheeted earlier by the CBI for fudging the samples in the Shopian women murder case, showed him having sex with a woman in his office.

Dr Ghulam Qadir Sofi, in-charge chief medical officer (CMO) Pulwama district, has been placed under suspension by the Jammu and Kashmir government and attached with the directorate of health services Srinagar. A case under section 376 (d) has also been registered against him.

Company executive kidnapped in Ghaziabad, rescued

Ghaziabad, March 20: An executive with a private company was kidnapped by five armed men Saturday but was rescued four hours later, police said.

According to police, Sanjay Tyagi, an executive with Dudheswar Packing Company, was kidnapped around 11 a.m. from Pilkhuwa locality of Ghaziabad when he was on his way to his office.

A police officer said five armed men dragged Tyagi into a car on National Highway-24.
