Photo journalist killed in Orissa road accident

Bhubaneswar, March 07: A 35-year-old photo journalist was killed when the car in which he was traveling hit a roadside tree in Puri district, police said Sunday.

The incident occurred near Pipili Saturday when Mukesh Kumar, who was working as photographer with Aaj Tak television channel, was traveling from Puri to Bhubaneswar.

Kumar was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, they said.

He is survived by his wife and a six-month-old son.

Drugs worth crores seized in Mumbai

Mumbai, March 06: The Mumbai police have seized over one ton of narcotics worth several crore rupees in the open market and arrested 19 people, including three foreigners, police said Saturday.

Sleuths of the Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) raided several locations in Mumbai during the past three days and recovered 900 kg of marijuana (ganja), 80 kg of hashish (charas), 30 gm of cocaine and three vehicles which were used to transport the drugs, Police Commissioner D. Shivanandhan told reporters.

Criminal escapes from police custody

Muzaffarnagar, March 06: An undertrial prisoner of Delhi gave a slip to policemen when he was being taken to a district jail here in connection with a case.

Rajesh, arrested in an abduction and murder case, was to be produced in the district jail when he fled from their custody yesterday.

He was, however, nabbed soon afterwards.

Group clash in Gujarat village

Ahmedabad, March 06: A clash broke out between members of two communities in Patdi village of Surendranagar district following an attack on a boy during a circus show, police said today.

“Hemant Thakor was attacked after an altercation at a circus show last night. He was rushed to the local hospital and later shifted to Ahmedabad for further treatment,” a senior police official of Surendranagar said.

The attack triggered a clash between two communities living in the village. Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, he said.

Two arrested with leopard skin

Bijnor, March 06: Two persons were arrested by Special Task Force personnel and leopard skin was seized from them in Meerut. Ashish and Pran Nath, both residents of Mandawar in Bijnor District, were arrested yesterday, police said.

During interrogation they said that they got the leopard skin from Shamshad and were to sell it to buyers from Mumbai. The price of leopard skin in international market is said to be about Rs 1,50,000.

A case was registered with the police under various sections of Wild Life Protection Act.

Mumbai, March 06: Accused of killing a traffic constable, a Delhi autorickshaw driver fled to Mumbai 14 days ago. But Rayees Rahitulla Khan’s (33) luck ran out on Friday.

At 3 am, JJ Marg police were conducting a nakabandi at Teli Mohalla in Byculla when they noticed a “suspicious-looking man”. “He was trying to avoid us.

When he saw that we were watching him, he started running. We caught him and questioned him, but his answers were unsatisfactory,” said Assistant Police Inspector S. Bansode.

Building partially damaged in fire

Banihal, March 06: A building housing shops and offices was partially damaged in fire in Banihal area of Ramban district, police said here today.

The fire emanated from one of the rooms of the two-storeyed building in Banihal, about 200 kms from here, last night and soon spread to adjoining rooms, they said.

It took one and a half hour to control the flames, they said, adding apart from a few shops, an office of Democratic Liberation Party (DLP) headed by separatists leader Shabir Shah was gutted. The cause of the fire and the damage to property were being ascertained, they said.

Indian Mujahideen terrorist arrested in UP

Lucknow, March 06: An Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist wanted in connection with several bomb blasts in the country was arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Siddharthnagar district, a senior police official said here Saturday.

‘Salman alias Chhotu was nabbed March 5 (Friday) in Siddharthnagar district by a team of Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS),’ Additional Director General (Law and Order) Brij Lal told reporters here.

Siddharthnagar is about 300 km from state capital Lucknow.

3 killed 15 injured in road mishap

Kota, March 06: Three persons, including two women, were killed and 15 others were injured when the vehicle in which they were travelling overturned, police said today.

The incident occurred late last night on Koyala-Bavdi road in Baran district, they said.

The injured have been hospitalised.

Five Maoists held in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, March 06: Five Maoist guerrillas, for whose capture the police had announced bounties, were arrested in Chhattisgarh Saturday.

The insurgents were held in a forest in Kanker district’s Rowghat region, some 280 km from here.

Kanker, Bijapur, Narayanpur, Bastar and Dantewada form the 40,000 sq km restive Bastar region known as a Maoist haven since the late 1980s.

Officials at the police headquarters in Raipur said the arrests were made by a police search team that spotted the rebels and forced them to surrender.

NOW Baba Ramdev in trouble: Drugs Seized from pharmacy

New Delhi, March 06: YOGA guru Baba Ramdev has landed in trouble for allegedly using derivatives of a protected plant in his Ayurvedic medicines.

A consignment of Baba Ramdev’s pharmacy was among those recently confiscated by the authorities for flouting rules.

“ Twenty- three consignments, worth crores of rupees, have been seized at different airports and seaports in the country during an international operation against illegal wildlife products, coordinated by Interpol,” wildlife department officials said.

IAF sergeant’s wife kills self, two daughters

Shillong, March 06: An Indian Air Force sergeant’s wife allegedly committed suicide after killing her two minor daughters in the official quarter at Eastern Air Command here.

26-six-year-old Parveen Akhtar, wife of Sergeant Shamim Akhtar, hanged her two daughters ? Samita (5) and Sania (3) ? and later committed suicide yesterday, police said.

The trio was found dead when Sergeant Akhtar came home from office, the police said.

No suicide note was found and police said post-mortem of the bodies could throw some light on the case.

The family hailed from Bihar.

10 people injured as balcony collapses

New Delhi, March 06: Around 10 people were today injured when a balcony of a building collapsed in the city. The incident was reported from a flat in Suraksha Vihar area of the city.

Police said around 10 to 12 people were injured and were taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.

Ghaziabad, March 06: It was the methanol in spurious liquor which was responsible for a large number of deaths in Ghaziabad in the past week, police said on Friday. Police also claimed to have arrested the mastermind of the spurious-liquor tragedy and also gave an official ‘clean-chit’ to Karina brand liquor, earlier suspected to be behind the deaths.

‘ 9/ 11 conspiracy theorist’ shot dead in Pentagon shootout

Washington,March 06 :AN ARMED man was shot dead after he opened fire on security guards at an entrance to the Pentagon on Thursday.

The gunman, identified as John Patrick Bedell, 36, died in hospital after the guards at the US defence department headquarters returned fire.

He is said to have harboured resentment against the military and posted online comments expressing doubts about the perpetrators of the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York.

CID to probe girl’s body in ‘ Gadkari car’

Mumbai,March 06 :THE Bombay High Court’s Nagpur bench has asked for a CID probe into the incident of a girl’s body found inside a car that allegedly belonged to BJP president Nitin Gadkari.

On May 21 last year, seven- year- old Yogita’s body was recovered from a Fiat Linea sedan parked at Gadkari’s residence in Nagpur’s Mahul. While initial reports had said the car belonged to Gadkari, the police report said it belonged to a former personal assistant of his.

Security of foreign students stepped up after blast

Pune, March 06: To ensure safety of foreign students, especially after the death of some of them in the German bakery bomb blast, the authorities have enhanced the security measures for 14,000 students from abroad, the largest number in an Indian city.

In a communication addressed to Pune University, police said it has identified places on the sprawling varsity campus that need better security.

Engineering student kills self for failing in exam

Mumbai, March 05: Apparently frustrated for failing in his examination, a 23-year-old mechanical engineering student allegedly committed suicide at his residence in suburban Borivali, police said today.

The deceased, identified as Rahul Gandhi (23), a third year student of Vartak College at Vasai in neighbouring Thane district, was found hanging from the celing fan with a dupatta at his residence in Govind Chhaya building last night, police said.

Rahul seemed upset after he learnt through the internet that he failed in three subjects, police said.

Kolkata, March 06: Noted industrialist G P Birla has died at his home here. He was 86.

Mr Birla had been ill for some time with various ailments and died late last night, family sources said.

Mr Birla, the father of C K Birla, was the head of GP-CK Birla group of companies which owns Hindustan Motors, Orient Fans and Orient Papers.

The GP-CK Birla group has major interest in automobiles, earth moving and electrical equipment.

New Delhi, March 06: A sting operation carried out by a news channel at the Hockey World Cup venue here today purportedly showed a policeman on camera selling tickets in the black market, prompting police to initiate an inquiry into it.

The channel showed a policeman identified as Rohtash posted outside Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium allegedly selling tickets — Rs500 tickets for Rs1,000 and Rs100 tickets for Rs500.

Body in Nitin Gadkari’s car: HC tells CID to investigate

Mumbai, March 06: Dissatisfied with the police investigation into the death of Yogita Thakare, the seven-year-old daughter of BJP president Nitin Gadkari’s maid, the Nagpur bench of the Bombay high court on
Friday handed over the case to the state CID.

Vimal Thakare, the girl’s mother, had filed a petition more than three months ago seeking a CBI investigation. A bench of justice AP Lavande and justice Pradeep Varale, however, directed the state CID to investigate the matter.

Five arrested for brickbatting over offering namaz

Lucknow March 05: Five people were arrested following brickbatting between two different sects of the Muslim community in Agra yesterday in connection with offering of namaz.

Home department sources here said that members of Sunni and Deobandi sects clashed with each other over offering namaz in a mosque in Kolihai locality, resulting in minor injuries to four people.

While the sunnis wanted to give a “takreer” (religious discourse) the Deobandis were against it, leading to the clash, sources said, adding, investigations were on.
