3 women crushed under train

Bhopal, March 28: Three elderly women, who set off for pilgrimage
to Hardwar, were crushed to death when they came under a speeding
train at Habibganj station here last night.

Superintendent of Police (GRP), Bhopal, Deepak Verma said
the tragic incident occurred when the women — Devika (58), Kusum
Lata (70), both residents of Khargone and Radhika (65), resident of
Khandwa — were crossing the railway track, instead of using over
bridge, came under Goa Express and died on the spot.

Stephen Court fire toll rises to 32

Kolkata, March 27: Two more charred bodies were recovered today from the fire-ravaged Stephen Court building on Park street, pushing the toll in Tuesday’s blaze to 32.

The two bodies were found on the fifth floor during clearing of rubble from where a stench was coming, Joint Commissioner of Police (Hq) Jawed Shamim told PTI.

He said the shrunken bodies were immediately removed by civic workers and sent to hospital for post-mortem.

Shamim said firemen were looking for four others missing in the fire.

5 militants shot dead along LoC in Kupwara

Srinagar, March 27: Five heavily-armed militants were shot dead by troops along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district today, raising the number of infiltrators gunned down in the sector in four days to eight, a defence spokesman said.

The infiltration bid was scuttled in Keran sector, 140 km from here, Lt Col J S Brar told PTI.

He said troops deployed on the LOC observed movement of militants from across. As the group tried to cross the border, they were challenged and fired at by the soldiers.

Teenage girl burnt alive after being raped in JK

Jammu, March 27: A teenaged girl was raped and burnt alive by some unidentified persons in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir.

A semi-burnt body of the 17-year-old was found in a tin-shed in Majalta area of the district last night, police said today.

During preliminary investigation, it was suspected that the girl was raped and then set afire by the attackers.

Station House Officer (SHO) Arvinder Kotwal said that a case has been registered and an investigation was on.

Over 20,000 books of a library gutted in fire

Bangalore, March 27: More than 20,000 books were gutted when a fire broke out in a library run by a private trust here in the wee hours today, police said. Two fire tenders took half an hour to douse the flames, they said.

Manjunath, trust owner and a BJP member, in his police complaint alleged that the fire was the handiwork of a JDS candidate, Anjanappa, who is contesting the coming polls to city corporation from Padmanabhanagar ward, where the library is located. Police said investigations were on.

5 killed, 50 injured in bus mishap

Suri (WB), March 27: Five persons were today killed and at least 50 others injured when an overcrowded bus, on way to a fair, overturned on NH 60 near Rampurhat in Birbhum district. Two persons died on the spot as the vehicle turned turtle in an adjacent paddy field, police said, adding two others succumbed to their injuries at a hospital in Birbhum district.

Man detained in lender’s murder

Mumbai, March 27: The Azad Maidan police on Friday detained a man in the murder of moneylender Alpesh Jain on Tuesday. The man had committed robberies in the area where Jain was found dead.

Bhaurao Bhawale, senior inspector, said fingerprints found from the victim’s apartment indicated that more than one person may have been involved in the murder. “We have put 14 men on the job and crime branch is also conducting parallel investigations,” said Bhawale.

Gang of 3 held for car thefts across city

Mumbai, March 27: The Kasturba police on Thursday arrested a gang of robbers that was later identified as one specialising in car thefts. They targeted high-end four wheelers in the city. The police nabbed the trio during a nakabandi on Dattapada Road in Borivli (East).

The three were travelling in a Chevrolet Tavera. The officers asked the car to halt for checking. However, the occupants did not pay heed and drove on. The police followed the vehicle and managed to stop it at Rajendra Nagar near Western Express highway.

3 doctors arrested for assaulting patients’ kin

Mumbai, March 27: Three doctors of a Malad hospital were arrested for allegedly assaulting a patient’s relatives on Thursday night. The police said, the complainant, Saket Parekh (25) who lives in Malad (West) said his father Keerti Parekh, (63) was admitted in Riddhi Vinayak critical care hospital on March 14 for breathing problem.

Student held for murder

Bhubaneswar, March 27: A 22-year-old management student has been arrested for murdering his woman friend after she rejected his proposal of love, police said Saturday.

“We have arrested Rajesh Sethi, an MBA student of the same college Rosalin was studying. He murdered Rosalin after she turned down his love offer. He was held Friday,” Bhubaneswar police commissioner BK Sharma said.

Rosalin Patel, 21, was killed Tuesday. She was an engineering student of a Bhubaneswar-based college.

Smuggler visited Hong Kong 20 times in a year

Mumbai, March 27: Mustafa Bookwala (40), who was arrested on Wednesday by the Customs for smuggling Rs 2 crore worth memory cards, is a seasoned operator. His passport revealed this. The Customs authorities found that Bookwala travelled to Hong Kong 20 times in a year, which was not normal. Though Customs officials said that all these trips were related to memory card smuggling, Bookwala has said that he did this only on three occasions.

Encounter between troops, militants in Rajouri forest

Srinagar, March 27: Security forces and militants were engaged in a gun battle in a forest area in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir since early morning, police said here. Acting on intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in Baji Mahal forest in Dharamsal, about 146 kms from here, security forces assisted by police rushed to the area, they said.

Management student held for friend’s murder

Bhubaneswar, March 27: A 22-year-old management student has been arrested for murdering his woman friend after she rejected his proposal of love, police said Saturday.

Lawyer’s wife commits suicide

Ghaziabad, March 2&: The wife of a lawyer allegedly committed suicide by hanging from the door bolt in their house here. The woman’s relatives have alleged she was murdered for dowry.

According to Rajesh Dwivedi, Inspector Incharge, Indirapuram police station, Teresa (21) was found hanging from the door bolt of her house in Sector-6 area of Vasundhara Thursday night.

“At around 12.30 a.m. on Thursday night, her husband Sushil Kumar noticed that she was hanging from the bolt of the door from inside and informed the police,” Dwivedi said.

Maoists blow up police station, block office in Bihar

Patna, March 27: Suspected Maoists blew up a newly-constructed police station and a block office in Bihar’s Rohtas district. They also torched 15 trucks, including eight of a private construction company engaged in road construction, police said Saturday.

More than 100 armed Maoist guerrillas attacked the newly-built police station and a block office at Tilouthu late Friday night and started firing indiscriminately. They later blew up the building using dynamite. No casualties were reported as security forces have not shifted in the building.

Orissa road accident toll rises to 10

Bhubaneswar, March 26: Ten people, including two children and three women, died in a road accident in Orissa’s Dhenkanal district Friday, police said.

The accident took place early Friday morning when a Trekker van carrying passengers from Khajuria village in Dhenkanal district collided head-on with a speeding coal-laden truck near Baldiabandh on National Highway 42.

“Eight people died on the spot and two died in a hospital,” a police officer said.

Nine Maoists arrested in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, March 26: Nine Maoist guerrillas were arrested from Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region Friday, police said.

The rebels were held in Koilibera area of Kanker district under restive Bastar region, some 330 km south of capital Raipur.

“A police team raided a meeting spot of Maoists in a forest and arrested nine guerrillas with six guns and explosives,” Kanker Superintendent of police Ajay Yadav told IANS.

He said all the nine guerillas were involved in several attacks on police and civilians in Kanker district during past two years.

Clashes in valley over crackdown on stone-throwers

Srinagar, March 26: At least five persons were injured as police fired teargas shells and used batons to disperse stone-hurling groups in Baramulla and Sopore townships of North Kashmir today.

The clashes in the two towns, 55 kms from here, erupted shortly after Friday prayers when groups of youth took to the streets demanding release of people arrested over the past couple of months on the charges of stone-throwing, official sources said.

Clashes broke out at Muslim Peer and Main Chowk in Sopore town and Farooqi Point, Main Chowk and Cement Bridge in Baramulla district town.

Freelance journalist arrested for extortion

New Delhi, March 25: A freelance journalist was arrested in the capital for allegedly extorting Rs eight lakh from a Faridabad-based businessman after secretly filming him in a compromising position with a woman, police said today.

The journalist, Sanjiv Sharma (34), was arrested yesterday from India Habitat Centre for allegedly conspiring with another businessman Neeraj Aggarwal, who owed Rs six lakh to Rajender Singh Khattana, the victim, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H G S Dhaliwal said.

Aggarwal allegedly did not want to repay the debt.

Maoists’ bunker destroyed in Gaya

Gaya, March 26: Police today demolished a bunker of Maoists and recovered a huge quantity of explosives, including detonators, at Dhakpahari village in Bihar’s Gaya district today, SP Sushil Khopade said.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided the area and unearthed the bunker of the Maoists, Khapade said.

67 detonators, 300 rounds of ammunition of self-loading rifles, timer devices and 700 uniforms of ultras were recovered during the operation, he said.

Militant shot dead near LoC

Srinagar, March 26: Army troops today shot dead an unidentified militant in a gunbattle near the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district, making it the second such incident in two days.

However, it was not clear whether the ultra was an infiltrator or part of the group which had tried to sneak into the valley from across the border on Wednesday, defence spokesman Lt Col J S Brar told PTI.

“An encounter took place near the LoC in Keran sector in which an unidentified militant was killed,” he said.

HR executive murdered

Noida, March 26: A Human Resource head of Intra Arch, a company located at Udyog Vihar, was found murdered at a Sector Delta house on Thursday. The police suspect his driver, who was missing till this evening, was involved in the murder.

SSP A.K. Singh said, “The body was found from an under-construction house in Sector Delta. He was identified as Pawan Upadhaya.”

Army busts three hideouts in JK

Srinagar, March 26: Security forces have busted three hideouts in Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu and Kashmir and recovered a cache of arms and ammunition from them. A hideout was busted today during security operation launched by 48 Rashtriya Rifles troops in Sabzian area near the Line of Control in Poonch district, security officiers said.

The recoveries from the hideout included 3.5 kgs of RDX, 9 detonators, 8 chinese grenades, 3 AK magazines. Another hideout was busted this morning by the security forces in Triyath belt of Rajouri district.
