Scarlet case: Constable knew her name after a month

Panaji, April 07: The police constable who shifted Scarlet’s body away from the beach came to know about her name a month later, that too through newspapers, he told the court today.

“I came to know about the name of said lady (Scarlet) after about one month. When we saw the body first, the body was being splashed by tide water and we did not know the name of the girl, which was made known to us subsequently,” Constable Vishant Chopdekar, the second witness to testify in Scarlet Eden Keeling case, told the court this evening.

Spl team formed to deal with child abuse cases

Chennai, April 07: City police today formed a special team to exclusively deal with child abuse cases, focusing on quick investigation and prosecution of defaulters.

The Child Abuse Investigation Team (CAIT) will function in nine police districts and will be headed by an Inspector, besides a woman sub-inspector among others as its members, an official release here said.

The team would function under the Assistant Commissioner, Anti-Dowry Cell.

Three injured in explosion at chemical firm in Gujarat

Valsad, April 07: Three labourers were injured when a reactor exploded at a chemical firm and triggered fire at the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) area in Vapi today, police said.

The incident occurred when the reactor at the production unit of Aarti Chemicals developed a snag and exploded leading to a fire, they said.

Fire brigade officials, who rushed to the spot, brought the flames under control and rescued the injured, police said.

A complaint has been registered in this regard, they said.

Orissa reviews situation after Maoist massacre

Bhubaneswar, April 07: Orissa government today took stock of the situation in the districts of the state close to Dantewada district of Chhattishgarh where Maoists killed 76 CRPF jawans.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who took stock of the situation in Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada and Malkangiri districts bordering Dantewada and southern Chhattisgarh this evening, asked the officials to adhere to the standard operation procedure (SOP) during force movement, sources said.

Suspected sunstroke death toll mounts to 23 in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, April 07: Three more people succumbed to suspected sunstroke today, taking the death toll to 23 in Orissa, even as heatwave continued to sweep across many parts of the state with the mercury touching 44.2 degree Celsius at Sambalpur, officials said.

While one man died at Keonjhar, one each died in Cuttack and Kendrapara districts, they said.

The mercury level touched 44.2 degree C mark at the western Orissa town of Sambalpur followed by 43 degree C at Titlagah, Balangir 42.4 deg C and Jharsuguda 43.3 deg C.

School girl commits suicide

New Delhi, April 07: Apparently depressed over poor academic performance, a 14-year-old school girl allegedly committed suicide in her residence in Outer Delhi, police said today.

The incident was reported from Bawana last night and the victim has been identified as Divya, a Class VIII student.

She had failed in one of the examinations recently and it is believed that she took the extreme step due to depression, police said.

Rights activist arrested for impersonation

Kolkata, April 07: Police Wednesday arrested a human rights activist on charges of impersonation and for holding illegal “people’s tribunals” across West Bengal.

“We have arrested Kirity Roy on the charge of impersonating judiciary and government officials. This apart, we also booked him for cheating and forgery,” Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police Jawed Shamim told IANS.

He said Roy used to run a human rights body called Banglar Manabadhikar Suraksha Mancha (MASUM).

Gay AMU professor found dead in his residence

Aligarh, April 07: An Aligarh Muslim University professor, whose gay orientation was exposed in a sting operation recently, was found dead in his residence with police not ruling out suicide.

The body of 62-year-old Srinivas Ramchander Siras, a reader in Modern Indian Languages and who taught Marathi, was found lying on the bed in his private apartment outside the university after police broke open the door which was locked from inside.

Quake in Alwar, no damage

Jaipur, April 07: An earthquake of mild intensity today shook Alwar district of Rajasthan but there was no loss of life or damage to property.

The tremor, measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale, was experienced at 1236 hours, the Met office said.

No loss of life or damage to property was reported from anywhere in Alwar, 148-km from here, officials said.

84 riots: Sajjan Kumar seeks documents from CBI

New Delhi, April 07: Congress leader Sajjan Kumar today sought a direction to CBI from a Delhi court to provide him and other accused documents referred to in the chargesheet filed against them in two 1984 anti-Sikh riots cases.

“It is not only necessary but highly desirable that the probe agency provide us with the statements of witnesses who had earlier been examined by different prosecuting agency,” I U Khan, counsel for Kumar submitted before Additional Sessions Judge Sunita Gupta.

Robbers loot factory after killing security guard

New Delhi, April 07: A 35-year-old security guard was killed by unknown robbers in the national capital, police said today.

The incident was reported from a godown in Sonia Vihar last night.

Sarnam was found dead with his neck slit open this morning while Rs 40,000 and goods worth lakhs were missing from the godown of Swagat Tobacco Company.

Four robbers entered the godown and after killing Sarnam, they fled with Rs 40,000 and goods kept there, a senior police official said.

They attempted to rob another factory in the locality but did not succeed as locals got alerted.

Spurious drugs: Bail applications of four dismissed

Chennai, April 07: The Madras High Court today dismissed bail petition of four persons, arrested after intensified action against the sale of expiry date drugs in the state.

Principle Session Judge P Devados dismissed the bail applications of Manikam (brother of Meenakshi Sundram, the prime accused involved in the sale of expiry date drugs), Rajesh, Sunitha Rani and Jagathambal.

Goods worth over Rs 5 crores traded between PoK and J&K

Poonch, April 07: Goods worth over Rs 5 crores were traded between Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Jammu and Kashmir at Chakan-Da-Bagh crossing point in Poonch district today, officials said.

25 trucks rolled out from Trade Facilitation Centre (TFC) at Ranger in Poonch district to PoK today, they said.

The consignments, worth Rs 1.89 crore, included bags of coconut, dry chillies, banana and herbs.

Similarly, 30 trucks carrying bags of green gram, worth 3.18 crores, crossed to this side, they said.

16 killed in fire related incidents in UP

Lucknow, April 07: Sixteen people were killed and seven others injured in separate fire-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh, officials said here today. While, three persons each were killed in fire-related incidents in Rare Bareli and Kushinagar, two deaths each were reported from Goarkhpur and Pratapgarh and one each from Maharajganj, Gonda, Mankapur, Bahraich, Sitapur and Hardoi, they said.

DU student gang-raped by five men

Gurgaon, April 07: A 20- YEAR- OLD girl was raped by five men in Gurgaon, after she was abducted near her home in Delhi’s Bijwasan area as she waited for an auto- rickshaw.

The incident took place early on Sunday. Mona ( name changed), a correspondence student of Delhi University ( DU), was waiting for an auto around 8 am when two men — identified as Sonu and Rishi — passed her in a Maruti car.

Fires kill 17 in Bihar

Patna, April 07: Seventeen people, including nine children, lost their lives and many were rendered homeless in a string of fires in rural Bihar over the last two days, police said Wednesday.

Seven people, including four children and a woman, died in West Champaran district, four in Sitamarhi, three in Chapra and one each in Purnia, Madhubani and Lakhisarai districts.

Man killed over water row

Bhopal, April 07: A man was shot dead following an altercation over water in Madhya Pradesh, which is facing a severe water crisis, police said Wednesday.

The incident took place Tuesday in Ratlam district’s Ramsingh Darbar area when Ramchandra, 33, stopped Ram Singh from drawing water from a borewell.

According to police, Ram Singh whipped out a pistol and killed Ramchandra in anger.

This is the second such case in Madhya Pradesh in a fortnight.

Eight killed in road mishaps near Pune

Pune, April 07: Eight persons were killed and 12 others injured in two separate road accidents near here, police said today. Four persons died and eight were injured when their car rammed into a sand-laden truck near Yavat on Pune-Solapur highway last night.

The victims, who hailed from the city, were on their way to the temple town of Tuljapur when the mishap occurred, they said. In another accident, a car collided with a truck at Wakad near here on the Mumbai-Bangalore Highway killing four of its occupants and injuring four others, police said.

2 dead, 1 injured in a fire in slum cluster in Bawana

New Delhi, Apr 07: Two persons were charred to death and one injured when a fire broke out in slum cluster in outer Delhi in the wee hours today. The blaze was reported from Shabda JJ Colony C-block in Bawana at around 00.50 am.

Seven fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the fire. According to police two persons were charred to death and one was injured in the incident.

The injured has been rushed to nearby hospital where he is undergoing treatment. The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.

Twelve mobile phones seized from Bihar jail

Patna, April 07: Twelve mobile phones were seized from inmates of a Bihar jail during a raid early Wednesday, police said.

Half a dozen mobile chargers, SIM cards and other objectionable items were also recovered from the prisoners of Beur central jail here, police said.

A police team led by Senior Superintendent of Police Vineet Vinayak raided the jail, where several gangsters, criminals turned politicians and Maoists are lodged.

74 CRPF Personal gunned down by MAOISTS

Raipur,April 06:The Maoists have struck again. This time, in their deadliest attack on security forces, the rebels trapped and gunned down 76 personnel of the Chhattisgarh police and the Central Reserve Police Force early on Tuesday in the thick jungles of Mukrana in Dantewada district. The police personnel were ambushed when they were returning after opening a road for the security forces to begin Operation Green Hunt, a coordinated campaign against the Naxalites.

26/11 Terrorist buried in Mumbai

Mumbai,April 06: The bodies of nine Pakistani perpetrators of the brazen 26/11 attack on Mumbai were secretly buried in January, the Maharashtra government revealed today.
“Bodies of nine terrorists who attacked Mumbai on November 26, 2008, have been disposed of in January this year,” state home minister RR Patil informed the legislative council.

The unclaimed bodies had been lying in the morgue of the Sir JJ Group of Hospitals since the attack that claimed 166 lives.

Pakistan has been denying that the terrorists were its nationals.

Three arrested with heroin worth Rs.12 crore

Meerut, April 06: Three drug peddlers have been arrested with heroin worth Rs.12 crore, police said Tuesday.

“The three men in their mid-20s were nabbed Tuesday from the bus stand in the Sadar area,” Nagesh Kumar, a police spokesman, told reporters here.

“All the three are residents of Uttar Pradesh, and worked for a drugs racket operating form Nepal,” he added.

The three have confessed that they were going to New Delhi to hand over the consignment to their clients there, police said.

Delhi lawyer claims threat to life

New Delhi, April 06: A prominent Delhi lawyer, who is pursuing the Bofors case through a PIL, today claimed he had received a threat from a person in Meerut, two days after he was targeted at Moradabad where unknown people fired at him.

Ajay Aggarwal filed a complaint with the police this evening soon after he received the letter in which the sender identified as Iqbal Mallik owned responsibility for the “attack” on him in Moradabad.

The letter said he escaped two days ago because it was a “just a sample” and they will kill him even if he goes into hiding anywhere in the country.
