Twelve hurt in clash at varsity

Rohtak, April 08: Twelve clerical employees were hurt as a clash broke out between them and the private security guards at B D Sharma University of Health Sciences here today after one of the clerks was denied entry into its wards.

Condition of two of the injured admitted to the casualty ward of the university was stated to be critical while the rest were discharged after treatment.

Chimpanzee dies at Alipore zoo

Kolkata, April 08: A 22-year-old chimpanzee died after falling from a tree at Alipore zoo here today, officials said.

“Jessy, a female chimpanzee, while jumping from one tree to another in its enclosure slipped and fell to the ground and received a head injury,” zoo director Raju Das said.

The animal, brought from the US in 1997, fell unconscious after the fall.

She was rushed to the zoo hospital where she succumbed to the injury, he said.

Though past her prime, Jessy could have lived some more years had she not suffered the fall, Das said.

Woman held with 400 grams of heroin

New Delhi, April 08: Delhi Police Thursday claimed to have busted an international drug trafficking racket and arrested a woman with 400 grams of heroin worth Rs.4 million in the international market.

Kasung Angmphy, hailing from Manipur, was arrested from Malviya Nagar in south Delhi by a team of the Special Cell, a police officer said.

“The woman had booked a consignment of 400 grams of heroin for South Africa. She was arrested when she came to enquire about it at the courier office,” the officer said.

Left party leaders court arrest in Tripura

Agartala, April 08: Workers and leaders of Left parties today demonstrated and courted arrest in Tripura as part of the countrywide protests against rise in prices of essential commodities.

Leaders of CPI(M), CPI, Forward Bloc and RSP criticised the economic policy of UPA government and threatened to intensify the agitation if the Centre failed to control prices.

CPI(M) spokesperson Gautam Das claimed that more than one lakh workers and leaders of the front in the state, which is ruled by the left parties, were arrested.

Documents seized during CID raid at Nityananda ashram

Bangalore, April 08: Some documents and articles have been seized from the ashram of self-styled godman Swami Nityananda, embroiled in an alleged sex scandal, police said.

CID, probing cases filed against Nityananda, seized the documents pertaining to the ashram, computers and its hardware and articles on April 6 during a raid on his ashram at Bidadi, about 35 km from here, police sources told PTI.

All these documents and articles are being thoroughly examined, they said.

One killed in road mishap

Noida, April 08: One person was killed and four others were injured after a speeding car in which they were travelling rammed into an electric pole in Surajpur area here today. The incident took place this afternoon near Devla when they were going from Surajpur to Dadri, police said, adding one person was killed in the mishap.

The injured have been admitted to a private hospital where their condition was stated to be stable, police said. All the victims were residents of Dadri.

Jawan killed in Kashmir gunbattle

Srinagar, April 08: A Rashtriya Rifles soldier was killed and another wounded in a gunbattle with separatist guerrillas in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district, police said on Thursday.

The gunbattle started on Wednesday when joint forces, including local police, surrounded the militants hiding in Zachaldara area of Rajwar forests in the district, 78 km from here.

According to a police official, one person was killed on Wednesday while another received injuries.

Rs 1.5 cr worth ketamine seized from air passenger

Coimbatore, April 08: A Singapore-bound passenger was today arrested at the airport here for attempting to smuggle 14.5 kg of ketamine, a misused anesthetic, to Thailand, police said.

Customs and immigration officials seized the drug, concealed in cloth bags, during baggage checking of Selvamani, a native of Chennai.

The drug, valued at Rs 1.5 crore in the international market, was meant to be delivered in Thailand where the substance has a good market, they said.

Ketamine is usually used as a legal anaesthetic but can be illegally synthesised to produce recreational drugs.

A notorious criminal killed

Mumbai, April 08: A notorious criminal from Uttar Pradesh, carrying a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on his head, was killed in a joint operation by the Special Task Force (STF) of UP and the Mumbai police crime branch on the beaches of Aksa in Madh on Wednesday afternoon. This is the first major operation by the crime branch this year, and the third encounter killing of a gangster in the city during the past fortnight.

Girls lodge molestation case against teacher

Ghaziabad, April 08: 16 girls of a government school in Jalalpur village here have lodged a complaint against their teacher, accusing him of molesting them, police said today.

The girls, in their complaint against English teacher Krishna Avtar Tyagi (55), have said that he used to molest them and passed lewd comments on the girls in the school.

The girls were of VI, VII and VIII standard at Jalalpur government school in Muradnagar block.

Security guard dies after falling off train

Mumbai, April 08: A 50-year-old security guard died after he fell from a train at the Andheri railway station on Wednesday morning. According to the Government Railway Police, Jai Narayan Pathak, an employee with a private company in Andheri (West), boarded the Virar-bound train from platform number 4 at Andheri station around 8.10 am.

“Pathak held the steel rod and boarded a new rake. When the train pulled out of the platform, Pathak’s hand slipped,” said senior inspector N.H. Sheikh.

School supervisor alleges sexual assault

Jaipur, April 08: A woman supervisor of a private international school here has alleged sexual assault by the institution”s administrator. An FIR in this connection was lodged last night with Mansarovar police station on a local court”s directive, officials said today.

The 38-year-old supervisor alleged in her FIR that the administrator Sunil Sharma called her to his office and assaulted her Investigating Officer Kartar Singh said.

Woman ends life after husband”s death

Lucknow, April 08: Shocked by her husband”s death, a woman committed suicide by jumping off the hospital building where he was admitted, police said here today.

35-year-old Vinay Kumar jumped off the second floor of Vivekanand Polyclinic in Nirala Nagar area immediately after her husband Gurudev Singh, who was admitted there for diarrhoea, died.

Vinay received serious injuries and later died in the hospital, they said.

Muzaffarnagar, April 08: Apparently depressed over poor performance in their school examination, a brother and a sister allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison in Matnawali village here in the district.

While, 14-year-old Gita, a class eight student, died yesterday, her 16-year-old brother Sandeep was battling for life in hospital, police said.

Rs 49 lakh robbed at gunpoint in Okhla

New Delhi, April 08: Three armed motorcycle-borne men allegedly snatched Rs 49 lakh from two employees of an export house in Okhla Industrial area on Wednesday afternoon. Police said the men fired three rounds in the air before fleeing with the money.

The alleged robbery took place outside the office of Orient Craft, an export house. The money was to be distributed as salary among the employees.

At 11.15pm, Mohammad Imran was trying to cross the road in front of his house to reach a sweet shop on the opposite side when he was hit. The vehicle stopped after hitting Imran. Since several passers-by surrounded the vehicle, the driver and his companion had no option but to get off the vehicle, an investigating officer said. They told the people that they would take Imran to a nearby hospital.

Gradually their friendship turned into an affair, they said. However, since the last two months the girl was ignoring Rao, who worked in a tea stall in Darsi village, police said.

AMU gay professor dies mystriously

New Delhi, April 08: An Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) professor, who was suspended on charges of “gross misconduct” on campus after he was filmed engaging in homosexual act with a rickshaw puller, was found dead in his home here, police said.

The police have not ruled out suicide by the teacher. His body was lying on his bed and blood was oozing out of his mouth, the police said.

Wife stabs husband for infidelity

New Delhi, April 07: A 48-year-old woman allegedly stabbed her husband due to his extra-marital affair, police said Wednesday.

Sunita, a resident of Zamrudpur in southeast Delhi, saw her husband Pratap with his companion. Sunita questioned him about his affair and a fight broke out between the two. In the melee, Sunita stabbed Pratap, police said.

“Sunita stabbed her husband Pratap after she questioned him over his extra-marital affair Monday,” a police official said.

“Pratap was admitted to a nearby hospital and the woman has been arrested,” the official said.
