Woman raped, thrown from seventh floor of building

Lucknow, April 11: A woman was allegedly raped and thrown from the seventh floor of a multi-storey residential apartment in Ghazipur area, police said here today.

The security guard of Kalyan apartment found the girl, who was in her 20s, lying in a pool of blood on the rear side the builing on the ring road, they said, adding she was rushed to hospital, where she succumbed to injuries.

Police said that before her death she murmured some names.

School student splashes acid on 18 classmates

Beijing, April 11: A student of a middle school in China splashed sulphuric acid on 18 of his classmates after he was involved in a quarrel with them, a media report said.

The 18 students of Jiadong Middle School in Lufeng city in Guangdong province are suffering from different degrees of burns after a student named Cai splashed sulphuric acid he had with him during a quarrel, Xinhua reported Saturday.

Of the 18 students, 12 were sent to hospitals for treatment, while the rest six have been sent home after medication, officials from the Lufeng publicity department said.

Man convicted for defaming ex-girlfriend on internet

Beijing, April 11: A Chinese man has been convicted for conducting a slander campaign on the internet, accusing his former girlfriend of being raped, working as a prostitute and spreading AIDS, a report said.

Yang Yongmeng, 32, distributed explicit photos and video footage of his former girlfriend on the Internet, and fabricated a story that she had been raped, worked as a prostitute and was infected with HIV, after she broke up with him, Xinhua reported Saturday.

The campaign resulted in the woman becoming the subject of public vitriol and which ruined her reputation.

Major fire at Delhi plastic scrap market

New Delhi, April 11: A major fire engulfed a plastic scrap market in west Delhi early Sunday. No one was injured, an official said.

The incident took place around 2.20 a.m. in Mundka area.

“The blaze spread in the entire two km area of the plastic scrap market. We immediately rushed 30 fire tenders and the blaze was brought under control after five hours,” the fire official said.

According to the fire department, prime facie it seems that the market was set on fire deliberately by some people. Police are investigating.

Eighteen killed in Thailand violence

Bangkok, April 11: Fierce clashes between Thai troops and protesters in Bangkok claimed at least 18 lives and injured 807, government sources said Sunday.

Among the dead were 14 civilians, including one Japanese photographer working for the Thomson Reuters news agency, and four soldiers, the latest report from the government’s Narenthorn Medical Centre said.

Suspected Maoists blow up three buildings in Bihar

Patna, April 11: Suspected Maoists blew up three government buildings in Bihar’s Kaimur district, police said Sunday.

The rebels blew up a primary health centre, a middle school and a community hall late Saturday in Sarodag village of Kaimur, about 160 km from here.

“All three buildings were badly damaged. They were blown up by using dynamites. We suspect the buildings were blown up by Maoists,” a police officer said.

No casualty has been reported.

Child killer couple want to have own baby

Hoshiarpur (Punjab), April 11: It seems life has come full circle for this couple in Punjab. Jasbir Singh, who is on death row, and his wife Sonia, who is serving life imprisonment, now want conjugal rights to bear a child.

However, the family of the teenaged boy they kidnapped and killed in Hoshiarpur town in 2005 is vehemently opposed to the move.

Jasbir Singh and Sonia were sentenced to death, along with their accomplice Vikram Walia, by the district and sessions court here in December 2006 for the cold-blooded murder of 16-year-old Abhi Verma.

Fire alarm in SpiceJet flight; DGCA cancels trip

New Delhi, April 10: DGCA chief S N A Zaidi had to cancel his trip to Bangalore today after a fire-alarm went off in a SpiceJet aircraft, leading it to be declared unserviceable for the flight.

The fire alarm went off during the pre-flight check by the pilot, after all the 150 passengers, including Zaidi, had boarded the Boeing 737-800 of SpiceJet’s SG-501 Delhi-
Bangalore flight, airport sources said.

While the aircraft was checked at night and declared fit to fly, the alarm buzzed when the pilot was conducting pre-flights check before the scheduled departure at 6.40 am.

Over 30 students hospitalised after taking vitamins

Bhubaneswar, April 10: Over 30 students of a residential school were hospitalised after taking vitamin tablets in Orissa’s Bolangir district Saturday, an official said.

Some students of Sagadaghat Nodal School complained of vomiting and nausea after taking the supplements, the district’s chief medical officer P.C. Sahu said.

They have been admitted to the Titlagarh Hopsital in Bolangir, over 300 km from here.

“We are finding out whether the children fell sick after taking the tablets or due to food contamination,” he added.

Three killed by over speeding truck

Haridwar, April 10: Three persons including a child were killed when their motorcycle was hit by an over speeding truck at Sikandarpur area of the district, police today said.

The incident took place yesterday when the motorcycle was hit by the truck from behind.

All the three died on the spot, they said. The identity of the deceased is yet to be established.

Their bodies have been sent for postmortem.

One killed, 12 injured in road mishap

Firozabad, April 10: One person was killed and 12 others were injured when a bus collided with a truck in Sirsaganj area, police said here tooday.

Sher Singh, truck cleaner, was killed when his vehicle collided with the roadways bus head-on near Nagla Radhey under Sirsaganj police area past midnight, they said.

The injured, including bus passengers, were admitted to district hospital, where condition of four was stated to be serious.

Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), April 10: Three television hosts assaulted a woman presenter and pulled out her hair after she called them homosexuals during a live show broadcast on the national network.

Enrique Crespo, Ali David and Tommy “La Berny” Castillo attacked Venya Carolina on live television as she called them homosexuals, the Commission on Public Entertainment and Radiophony said in a statement Friday.

Miraculously escaped unhurt

Mumbai, April 10: A 19-year-old boy miraculously escaped unhurt even after his car crashed on to the Worli seaface promenade before it turned turtle thrice in the early hours of Friday.

Jai Goel, a student of Podar College, and his friend Rounak went for a drive to Worli seaface at 2.30 am when Goel lost control of his Honda Accord while speeding. According to an eyewitnesses, Goel – son of a steel company owner and resident of Worli – crashed into two promenade benches before stopping a few meters away from the promenade boundary.

Maoists kill two Trinamool Congress workers

Midnapore, April 10: Maoists shot dead two Trinamool Congress workers at Bandhghora village near Lalgarh in West Midnapore district, police said today. The guerrillas chopped the limbs of Paban Mahato (38) and Kaushik Dutta (35), a casual worker of electricity department of Manikpara in Jhargram, and fired 11 bullets at them from a close range yesterday, they said.

Major fire in Tughlakabad container depot in Delhi

New Delhi, April 10: A major fire has broken out at the Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Tughlakabad in Delhi this morning, but there were no reports of any casualities.

As many as 32 fire tenders have been rushed to the spot and are battling the blaze which broke out at 0545 hours today.

“It is a major fire. Our 32 fire vans are on the spot trying to put the flames down,” the fire department official said.

Fire in container depot in Tughlaqabad

New Delhi, April 10: A major fire broke out at the Inland Container Depot in Tughlaqabad area of South Delhi in the wee hours today.

The blaze started at 5:45 am at the depot and quickly spread to around 30 containers storing clothes and tyres.

Twenty-two fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the blaze was brought under control after three hours around 9 am, fire brigade officials said.

Three crude bomb explosions in Vadodara

Mumbai, April 10: Three crude bombs exploded in an under-construction building in Gujarat’s Vadodara,on Friday triggering panic in the locality, police said.

The explosions took place around 0330 hours this morning in the building located in Darbar Chokdi, Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana said.

There were no casualties in the incident, police said.

Another crude bomb recovered from the site has been defused and Forensic Science Lab (FSL) experts are examining it, Asthana said, adding further investigations are on.

Girl suicide bomber kills police chief in Russia

Moscow, April 10: A Woman suicide bomber on Friday blew herself up in Nazaran, the capital of the Russian republic Ingushetia, fatally injuring the police chief there.

The police said the officer, Akhmed Tsurov, succumbed to injuries in a hospital.

Ingushetia is a predominantly Muslim republic in the Northern Caucasus and borders the war- torn Chechnya.

It has been troubled in recent years by Islamist insurgency.

The bomber was identified as Marina Yevloyeva, 26, a resident of the Kantyshevo in Nazaran, an investigator told the Interfax news agency.

Two jawans raped teen

Pune, April 10: TWO jawans of the Rajputana Rifles have been arrested for raping a 19- year- old girl in Pune on Wednesday.

The two armymen were arrested on Friday and a case has been registered against them, the police said.

The army personnel were nabbed after they continued to harass their victim after raping her.

The incident took place on Wednesday evening when the victim and her boyfriend were travelling on a motorbike near Chinchwad.

Man arrested for threatening witness in Naroda case

Ahmedabad, April 09: A man has been arrested for allegedly threatening a 2002 riot witness in the Naroda Patiya case, which is being investigated by the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT), police said today.

Rajendra Rajput was arrested yesterday from Sherkotda area of the city following a complaint filed by Siddiq Mansuri with the SIT’s Witness Protection Cell (WPC), they said.

One killed, four injured in group clash in UP

Lucknow, April 09: One person was killed while four others were injured in a group clash in Dhanpara village of Bahraich district today, police said.

A gram pradhan of the village and his men allegedly clashed with rival faction which lodged a complaint against them, they said, adding that a team of officials had visited the village yesterday to look into the complaint.

Both the sides attacked each other with lathis resulting in the death of the man, police said, adding the injured included the complainant who was shot at allegedly by the gram pradhan with his licenced revolver.

CBI to appoint more lawyers in Maharashtra

Mumbai, April 09: With the Centre sanctioning more CBI courts in Maharashtra, the investigating agency has called for applications from young lawyers to fight over 400 pending cases for it on contract basis.

“The need for additional lawyers, who would work as prosecutors, arose after the Centre sanctioned additional courts in the state for speedy disposal of a backlog of cases,” CBI’s chief prosecutor Ejaz Khan told PTI.

The criteria for appointment is that the lawyer should have minimum seven years experience.

Advocates to boycott court against lathicharge

Allahabad, April 09: Functioning of all courts across the state is likely to be affected on Monday on account of a boycott call given by the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council in protest against the lathi charge on advocates in Kanpur.

“The UP Bar Council has called upon all of its members to abstain from judicial work on Monday. The measure has been taken to protest the lathicharge on advocates in Kanpur recently,” Bar Council Secretary P N Tyagi told.

Nityananda’s anticipatory plea posted to April 12

Bangalore, April 09: A sessions court today posted to April 12 the hearing of anticipatory bail application of self- styled godman Nityananda Swami, embroiled in a sex scandal.

When the matter came up, Judge Hungund of Ramanagaram Sessions Court near here adjourned the hearing to April 12.

Nityananda is facing criminal charges, including rape.

In a related development, Karnataka High Court has adjourned hearing of Nityananda’s petition praying for quashing of the criminal cases filed against him to April 15.

IM terrorist claims getting threat in Tihar jail

New Delhi, April 09: A suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorist today alleged before a Delhi court that he was getting threat inside Tihar jail here.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja, taking the application of Salman alias Chotu into consideration, sought a response from Tihar jail authorities on April 12 on the alleged threat.

Salman, who claims himself to be a minor, was arrested on March six by Anti-Terrorism Squad of Uttar Pradesh Police from Siddarth Nagar for his alleged role in the serial blasts of the national capital on September 13, 2008.
