Boy held for throwing acid on minor

Kanpur, July 29: Apparently frustrated over an abrupt end to his affair, a boy here allegedly threw acid on his 14-year-old beloved, police said. Superintendent of Police KS Peepal said that police arrested accused Anand and also found loveletters and photographs from him.

Kamla (name changed), a class 10 student of Hiswa village was returning home last evening, when Anand threw acid on her body, which caused injuries to her body and was admitted to hospital. According to police, apparently infuriated over no conversation with his dalit girlfriend, Anand decided to take this step.

Four arrested in murder case of two elderly women

Mumbai, July 29: A routine vehicle check by police last night resulted in the arrest of four persons who allegedly killed two elderly women and were escaping with their valuables, police said here today. The four, including the car driver of the victims, were nabbed after a policeman who stopped the taxi they were traveling in noticed blood stains on the shirt worn by one and detained them for questioning.

Teacher disrobes girls, takes measurements with his fingers

Vidisha, July 29: In a shocking incident, a teacher allegedly half-disrobed eight Adivasi girl students of fifth standard of a government school in the district’s Tyonda on the pretext of taking measurements for their uniforms.

The shameful act of the teacher has now forced the eight girls of Ganjbasoda’s Nurpur Education Guarantee Scheme School to discontinue their studies.

The incident that took place on July 24, about five km from Tyonda, came to light when the girl students complained to their parents about it, district education officer, Manish Verma said on Wednesday.

German 11-year-old feared imprisoned in her home for nine years

Neuruppin, July 29: An 11-year old girl in eastern Germany is believed to have been imprisoned by her parents for up to nine years, media reports said Wednesday.

The girl, who never attended school, was believed to suffer from both mental and physical disabilities, local media said.

Social services took charge of the girl and brought her to a clinic after a neighbour reported the case, a county government spokeswoman said.

Maoists kill panchayat head in Bihar

Patna, July 29: Suspected Maoist guerrillas Wednesday shot dead a panchayat head in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar as he refused to pay levy to the rebels, police said.

Premchand, head of Paigampur panchayat in Muzaffarpur, was killed outside his residence by a group of armed Maoist rebels at Dera Chowk in Minapur block, a police officer said.

The village head had been demanding security from the state government fearing a threat to his life. He also sought help from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar by appealing in the local dailies a few months ago.

Pakistani man jailed for life for killing three prostitutes

Hong Kong, July 29: An unemployed Pakistani man has been jailed for life after strangling three prostitutes in a three-day killing spree in Hong Kong, a media report said Wednesday.

Nadeem Razaq, 24, who came to Hong Kong when he was one year old, claimed in police interviews that he murdered the women on the orders of armed debt collectors in Macau, the South China Morning Post newspaper said.

Dozens missing after Haitian boat sinks; 15 dead

Miami, July 29: Fifteen people were killed after a boat carrying some 200 Haitian migrants capsized near the Turks and Caicos Islands, the US Coast Guard said.

About 70 people were missing in the incident and 118 passengers were rescued by the coast guard.

“The rescued people are in stable condition and, according to information we have up to now, nobody suffered serious injuries,” a Coast Guard spokesman in Miami, Barry Bena, said.

Four held for murdering two sisters in Mumbai

Mumbai, July 29: Four persons were detained on Tuesday for allegedly murdering two sisters in the Parel area of the city, shortly after committing the crime.

Pramila and Krishna Gawde, both in there 50s, were found murdered at their residence, police said.

The duo was murdered using sharp instruments. Jewellery and cash were found missing from the residence.

A short while later, four persons travelling in a taxi were stopped by police during regular checking. On searching the vehicle, the jewellery and cash robbed from the residence were found in their possession.

Militant killed in encounter

Srinagar, July 28: An unidentified militant was killed in a gunbattle with security forces in Shopian district of South Kashmir today, making it the first encounter in the area after weeks of unrest following rape and murder of two women there. Official sources said police and Rashtriya Rifles launched a joint operation to flush out hiding militants at Matribugh village, 67 kms from here.

Army officer among three dead in Pithoragarh

Pithoragarh, July 28: Three persons including one Army officer died near Devalthal, 32 kms from here, when the car they were travelling in fell into a deep gorge, police said today. The car was on its way to Pithoragarh from Thal town.

The dead include Santosh Karki of Pithoragarh and Lt. Naveen Karki and Ajay Yadav from Lucknow.

The police and medical team have been rushed to the spot and the arrangements to recover the bodies from the gorge are on way. They are having a tough time due to heavy rains, police said.

Scribe dies in road accident in HP

Sundernagar, July 28: A correspondent of a regional daily died today, when the car he was driving, fell into a deep gorge near Hanogi temple on Kullu-Mandi road, police said. Manmohan Sharma (38), the Kullu correspondent of Hindi daily ”Divya Himachal”, was driving to Mandi when the accident occurred, police said.

Sharma is survived by his wife and daughter. Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal joined journalists across the state in expressing grief over the death of Sharma.

Indian drug peddler jailed for life in Bangladesh

Dhaka, July 28: An Indian drug peddler found in possession of heroin has been jailed for life along with two Bangladeshis by a court in Khulna, a town in the west of the country.

A kg of the drug was seized from Indian national Tarak Debnath and his hosts, Alamgir Hossain and Jahangir Alam, in March last year, The Daily Star said Tuesday.

Debnath, who carried the heroin from India, was picked up from Alamgir’s house.

Illegal drugs are one of the more lucrative items smuggled across the 4,300 km border between Bangladesh and India.

Two killed in rains; chaos on Delhi roads

New Delhi, July 28: Heavy rains in the national capital have claimed two lives, including a minor girl, as life came to a standstill in many parts of the city today due to record overnight showers which led to water logging in several areas resulting in chaotic traffic jams. The city has received a record 126 mm of rains till 8:30 am today since Sunday evening.

Eleven people killed as wall collapses

Noida, July 28: With one more person succumbing to injuries, the toll in the wall collapse due to heavy rains in this satellite township of the national capital on TUesday climbed to 11.

Ten persons were killed and ten others injured when the wall of a house collapsed in sector 58 of Noida late last night, a senior police official said.

One of the injured succumbed to injuries later.

“The wall collapsed due to heavy rains,” the official said, adding rescue work continued throughout the night to pull out the trapped people.

Four of family killed as house caves in MP town

Bhopal, July 28: Four members of a family including two children were killed when the house in which they were living in a Madhya Pradesh town caved in following incessant rains, police said Tuesday.

‘The incident occurred late Monday when the roof a house in Jaora town of Ratlam district fell and the side walls of the house also caved in killing all the four members of the family instantly,’ a police official from Ratlam police control room told IANS on phone.

‘After the rescue operations, the police found four dead bodies. Further investigations are on’, he said.

Three persons charred to death in fire mishap

Madurai, July 28: Three persons were charred to death and another injured in two fire mishaps at private fireworks factories near Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu today. In the first mishap, three workers were charred to death when they were making crackers in a shed of a fireworks factory at Pallapatti.

Three sheds were damaged in the fire triggered by sparks caused by friction, police said. In the other fire accident at a fireworks factory in Chokkalingapuram, one person was injured.

Two girls try to commit suicide

Muzaffarnagar, July 28: A girl died while another was rescued when the two allegedly jumped into a Ganga canal near Bhopa village after their families opposed their love affairs, police said today. The girls, Shikha and Kavita, jumped into the canal yesterday evening, they said, adding Kavita drowned but Shikha has been rescued.

Contract killing bid foiled in Mohali

Chandigarh, July 28: An attempt to murder a Patiala-based agriculturist was foiled in Phase-XI here on Sunday evening. One of the four assailants, who was arrested, confessed that the gang was paid Rs 50,000 by a Patiala dairy owner to kill the agriculturist, Baldev Singh.

A resident of Zarikpur village in Patiala, Singh, was outside his relative Kuljinder Singh’s house in Phase-XI, when he was attacked by four assailants who first blinded him by throwing chilly powder in his eyes and later beat him up, investigating officer (IO) Harpreet Singh told Newsline.

Constable arrested for ‘raping’ 27-yr-old

Mumbai, July 28: The Colaba police on Saturday arrested a constable from the local arms branch for allegedly raping a 27-year-old woman. The accused has been identified as Deepak Chavan, 47.

According to the police, Chavan and the victim, a Borivili resident, were having a physical relationship since 2003 and he had promised to marry her. The problem was that he was already married and also had a child. However, he and his wife were separated since three years. She is currently staying Ahmedabad, the police said.

Teen gang of cellphone snatchers held

Allahabad, July 28: The Allahabad police busted a gang of four teenagers involved in cellphone snatching on Monday.

The youths — Shekhar Prajapati, Prakash Mishra and Siddharth Prakash Tiwari and a minor — are from well-to-do families residing in Teliarganj area under Shivkuti police station. All are students of intermediate class.

Two bikes and 24 cellphones were recovered from their possession. They were caught from Buxibund area while they were about to sell the mobiles.

Mother says devil made her stab and decapitate her baby

Texas, July 28: Police found a three-week-old baby boy decapitated and stabbed in a Texas home and his mother “screaming that she killed her baby” after the devil told her to do it.

The mother, Otty Sanchez, 33, of San Antonio, was taken to hospital in a critical condition with self-inflicted stab wounds to her chest and stomach, said San Antonio police spokesman Joe Rios.

Investigators took a sword, a machete and a kitchen knife from the home.

Officers also found two children unharmed at the home, though it wasn’t immediately clear where they were taken.

7-month-old boy crushed by car in Sant Nagar

Ludhiana, July 28: A seven-month-old boy died after being run over by a car in Sant Nagar in Ghumar Mandi this afternoon. The victim, Krishna, who was the son of daily wagers, died after he was crushed by the car of one Lalit Kumar while reversing.

According to information, the deceased had been left sleeping by the roadside as his parents — Ram Khilawan and Rajni — who were engaged in the construction of the road nearby. The family resides in Sunet village.

Mumbai, July 28: The blows never seem to end for the Yadav siblings. The latest to hit them: the man who was supposed to marry Savita, the eldest, has changed his mind. She has also been thrown out of her own Ulhasnagar home by her uncle.

New Delhi, July 28: The police are now investigating the role of the six ABVP activists, acquitted earlier this month of killing H S Sabharwal, in last week’s murder of an aide of the slain Ujjain professor’s son, according to a police source.

Besides the six, the police are also analysing phone call details of several others associated with Sabharwal’s son Himanshu.

Mumbai, July 28: The three accused, convicted by a special court on Monday for carrying out blasts at various parts of the city in 2003, said they had already been held guilty by the media and public long before the verdict.

A special Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) court on Monday convicted Ashrat Ansari, Hanif Sayed and his wife Fehmida for conducting blasts at Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazaar in south Mumbai and at suburban Ghatkopar, killing 54 persons and injuring 244 others.
