On road to help injured friends, man crushed

Chandigarh, August 04: A 26-year-old man died in an accident near the Botanical Garden early on Monday morning. Gurmeet Singh had stepped out of his car to help his friends whose Swift car hit a tree near the Botanical Garden when the accident took place. A speeding Santro car hit him.

Gurmeet Singh, a farmer who lived in Kishangarh, is survived by his wife and two children.

The accident took place around 4 am when Gurmeet was examining the damaged Swift car, which hit a tree after the driver lost control while crossing a speed breaker.

Engineer picked up for colleague’s murder

Lucknow, August 04: Singh, an assistant engineer (AE) with the flood division of the Irrigation Department at Kushinagar district, was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne youths while he was coming out of Executive Engineer B P Singh’s residence in the Cantonment area.

Additional Director General (Law & Order) Brij Lal said, “The police have vital clues and the case would be worked out soon.”

Gorakhpur DIG Anand Swaroop said the police picked up the victim’s colleague A K Chaudhary after the deceased’s family said they suspected him.

Maoists kill two CPM men in Belpahari

Kolkata, August 04: Suspected Maoists killed two local CPM leaders in Belpahari in West Midnapore district in two separate incidents during the last 24 hours.

About 15-20 armed men attacked the house of Gurucharan Mahato (49) at Jamjurki village in the Belpahari police station area on Monday. Mahato was a former member of the local panchayat.

The assailants allegedly dragged him out and beat him up before shooting him dead. The police said the Maoists fired four rounds at him. Last year, Pelaram Tudu, a CPM Binpur zonal committee member, was killed in the same village.

HC lawyer shot in his chamber

Dhaka, August 04: Staff Correspondent An unidentified criminal yesterday shot a lawyer in his chamber in broad daylight at the city’s Kailash Ghosh Lane in court area.

Advocate Mia Mohammad Zakir Hossain was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital with bullet injury to his right arm.

Zakir, 47, who practices in the High Court and lower courts, lives in the apartment above his chamber.

Sub-Inspector Azimul Karim of Kotwali Police Station said they could not immediately ascertain why he was attacked.

Cash, jewellery worth Rs.3.5 lakh looted from Delhi house

New Delhi, August 03: Four unidentified armed men Monday evening barged into the east Delhi house of a businessman and looted cash and jewellery worth nearly Rs.3.50 lakh after holding his wife hostage at a gunpoint.

Sudha Jain, 55, was alone at her Vivek Vihar house when the robbers walked in as the doors were open. They held the woman at gunpoint and asked for the keys to an almirah.

“They ransacked the house and decamped with Rs.195,000 cash and jewellery worth Rs.150,000,” said a police official.

TISS gangrape case to come up for hearing on Aug 11

Six persons, aged between 21 and 27 have been arrestedin April this year for allegedly gangraping a 23-year-old USnational, who was a student of the Tata Institute of SocialSciences (TISS).

Dalit girl raped in Chinahat

Lucknow, August 03:A 17-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly raped by her three neighbours, also Dalits, in Chinahat area in Lucknow on late Saturday night.

According to the victim’s father, Shiv Narayan, his three neighbours — Sarvajeet, Pawan and Bechan —kidnapped his daughter from outside the house on Saturday and took her to their place and raped her.

The police have already registered a case against the accused.

Political mercury shoots up in MP over Bundelkhand

2 die in Katwa clashes, CPM team faces public ire in Natungram

Kolkata, August 03: Two persons were killed as fresh clashes broke out in Katwa of Burdwan district on Sunday. The police, however, said both the deceased had a crime record.

Burdwan has been reeling under political violence for over a month with clashes recurring in Mangalkot, Natungram and other areas. Clashes erupted in Khalilpur village in early morning after two groups of miscreants, allegedly backed by rival political parties, clashed with each other at Kumargram ghat. They exchanged fire and hurled bombs at each other.

Maoists shoot 2 CPM men, declare death sentence for six more

Mumbai, August 03: The spate of murders in Lalgarh and adjoining areas continues, as two CPM leaders were shot dead by Maoists even though security forces have been conducting operations in the area for a month.

The CPM branch committee secretary of Amdanga, Nirmal Mahato, was shot dead near his home early Sunday morning. The attack came barely 10 hours after CPM leader Kalipada Singh was shot dead by Maoists in Chirugora village.

20-yr-old rams car into taxis, injures seven

Mumbai, August 03: Seven people, including a woman, were injured when a 20-year-old resident of Napean Sea Road, speeding in a Maruti Swift car, lost control and rammed into three taxis near Girgaum Chowpatty on Sunday afternoon.

Abhay Shah, 20, was speeding on Marine Drive towards Babulnath when one of the rear wheels got punctured and he applied the handbrake, the police said. However, he could not control the vehicle and rammed into the taxis, they said.

Man Pleads Not Guilty to Killing Girlfriend

Dubai, August 03: A 31-year-old Indian on Sunday pleaded not guilty to killing his girlfriend and stealing Dh300 from her after an argument over the money she owed to him.

The defendant confessed to the police that after accompanying his Burmese girlfriend to Al Mamzar Park on February 15, 2009, he took her home by taxi, said Sergeant Mohammed Al Badly of Dubai Police in the Criminal Court of First Instance.

Upon arrival, he decided to walk the victim to her door where an argument over money took place.

Former minister’s son found shot dead in Punjab

Bathinda, August 02: Son of a former Akali Dal minister of Punjab was found murdered in his car in this Punjab town Sunday, police said.

Sandeep Singh Dhillon, son of former Akali Dal leader Teja Singh, was found dead in his car, according to officials. He had been shot in the back, possibly from a close range. He left his home in the morning with two of his friends.

District police chief Ashish Chaudhary said the police have registered a case and started our investigations.

Police sources said that Dhillon had an old enmity with another family of the same area over a piece of land.

Son of former Punjab minister murdered

Bathinda, August 02: A son of a former Punjab Minister was today found murdered in a car at Sirhand Canal near Beham bridge in this district, police said.

Sandeep Singh Dhillon (45), son of Teja Singh Dhillon, a former Shiromani Akali Dal minister, was shot in the back from close range, police said.

His family said Sandeep Singh was called from his house in Civil lines by two persons who wanted to hire his land for a stud farm.

Labourer ‘gang-raped’

Hyderabad, August 02: A labourer from Mahbubnagar, hired to work at a cattle shed, was allegedly gang-raped by three youngsters at MD lines in Golconda on Friday night.

The 25-year-old married woman was made her to stay back till it became dark to clean the shed. The accused Khaled allegedly dragged her inside a room near the shed and violated her. Khaled’s friend Naushad and another shed worker, Ram Jatan Choudhary also raped the woman, Golconda Inspector Chandrashekhar Reddy told reporters.

Prisoner says he was raped by seven inmates

Dubai, August 02: A man jailed at Al Aweer prison has alleged that he was raped by seven inmates who threatened him with a knife.

A.M., a 24-year-old Syrian, said he was allegedly raped by seven prisoners 10 days ago. He was later transferred to solitary confinement.

Police said A.M. is serving a one-year jail term for theft.

“He finished his sentence 20 days ago, but he is wanted in another emirate for a crime he committed there,” the police official said.

A.M. was crying when he spoke on the phone from jail. “I cannot tolerate the pain physically and morally,” he said.

17-yr-old raped, filmed by two in Mohali

Mohali, August 02: Accused extorted money from the victim, threatening to circulate the video they made while raping her on July 8

A 17-year-girl was allegedly raped by two men, who abducted her from Mohali on July 8. The accused reportedly filmed the girl in an objectionable position and later extorted money and jewellery from her, the police said.

After keeping silent about the incident for over three weeks, the girl on Friday told her mother about it.

The accused were reportedly demanding Rs 2 lakh from her, threatening to upload her pictures and videos on Internet.

Terror revisits Srinagar, one dead

Srinagar, August 02: Violence revisited Srinagar after a long time when militants struck in the heart of the city and shot at two CRPF men and a J&K policeman in two different places leaving one dead and two others injured one of them critically.

The two incidents occurred in the span of 30 minutes in the two kilometer area from Regal Chowk to Batamaloo. The first incident occurred at 11.30 am at Regal Chowk when two suspected militants armed with small weapons fired at two CRPF men, of 132-battalion who were on duty, from point blank range leaving them in a pool of blood.
