Chandigarh, August 05: Being told that a few currency notes had fallen near her car cost a woman dear. Her purse was stolen as she went looking for the notes.

Police said Wednesday that Devinder Kaur Kang, a resident of the city’s upscale Sector 2, was getting into her car in Sector 22 Tuesday when a man told her that a few currency notes had fallen near her car.

As she went to fetch them, her purse carrying Rs.28,000, gold and diamond ornaments, and a cheque book was stolen by the miscreant from her car.

Eleven-day-old baby branded witch, left to die in open fields; rescued

Rajkot, August 05: In Amreli, an 11-day-old baby spent nearly 24 hours without any food or protection after being abandoned in an open field. Later, she was spotted by some agricultural labourers, who rushed her to the Amreli Civil Hospital on Monday.

The girl’s parents, Ramesh and Rayeni Bhuriya, also agricultural labourers, believe she is a witch who would kill all in the family.

On Tuesday, the baby, already weak without any food and water, was put on drip, while the police are trying to counsel her parents to take her back.

Gas leak sickens more than 100 in China

Beijing, August 05: An ammonia gas leak at a pharmaceutical factory sickened more than 100 people today in northern China, state media reported.

An initial investigation showed that workers failed to properly unload more than 50 tons of ammonia from a truck at the Chifeng Pharmaceutical Factory in Chifeng city in Inner Mongolia today morning, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

All residents within two kilometers downwind of the plant were evacuated and those exhibiting symptoms such as headaches, lightheadedness and respiratory problems were taken to a hospital, the report said.

Victim died of electric shocks, say police

Chandigarh, August 05: A day after a 50-year-old woman was murdered in her first floor flat in SBI colony, Sector 42, the postmortem report has ruled out that she was raped.

Santosh Kumari, wife of an SBI bank manager, was found murdered on Monday afternoon with a live electric wire in her mouth. She was found in a semi-naked state, which made the police suspect that she might have been raped.

According to the postmortem report, the inside of her mouth was badly burnt due to the electric shock given to her. The police said she died due to electrocution.

Dalit sisters ‘raped’ in Sitapur

Lucknow, August 05: Two teenage Dalit sisters were allegedly raped by three youths when they were returning home from college in Imliya Sultanpur area of Sitapur district on Tuesday evening.

Locals caught hold of an accused and thrashed him till the police took him in custody. The others are yet to be traced. The victims have been sent for the medical examination.

Mob lynches 3 robbers for killing milkman

Lucknow, August 05: Angry mob shot and assaulted three robbers in Agra district’s Shamsabad area in the early hours of Tuesday. A gang of six miscreants was escaping after killing a milkman in the area.

While one was arrested with the help of the villagers, two others managed to escape.

Though identified as natives of Ferozabad district, the police are yet to verify the antecedents of the accused.

Youths steal Rs 10,000 from sweet shop in city

Ludhiana, August 05: In a daring daylight incident, two masked youths decamped with cash from the cash box of a sweetmeat shop in the Kochar Market area this afternoon. The youth came in a black Scorpio to Ashok Sweet Shop and escaped in no time.

Giving information, shop owner Aman Kumar said, “Today, we had displayed our sweets on an extended counter outside our shop. As I was dealing with a customer, two youths came to the shop in a black Scorpio.

19-year-old boy commits suicide

Mumbai, August 05: A 19-year-old boy committed suicide by jumping from a hospital building in central Mumbai as he was fed up of his prolonged illness, police said today.

Shailesh Rankhabe, a resident of Parbhani, was suffering from stomach ulcer since two years and was undergoing a treatment at KEM hospital at Parel, they said.

Rankhabe was allegedly depressed over his sickness and he commited suicide last night, they said.

A case has been registered, police added.

Man knocked down by bus, dies

Kolkata, August 05: A man died after he was hit by a CTC bus at Rashbehari crossing in south Kolkata on Tuesday. The accident took place 40 minutes before the funeral procession of CPM leader Subhas Chakraborty reached the spot. The bus first hit Biswanath Das (37), who was on a motorcycle, and then a minibus and a taxi.

J-K: 7 militants killed in 5 infiltration bids

Srinagar, August 05: The Army on Wednesday killed seven militants during gunbattles to prevent infiltration bids in five locations across Jammu and Kashmir.

Three of these encounters were on in Kupwara and one in the Pirpanjal range even as this report was being filed.

In Kupwara, encounters were on in Karen, Farkiyan Gali and Tangdhar. Five militants had so far been killed in this region.

Lt Col J.S. Brar, PRO of the Army in Srinagar, said it was difficult to estimate how many militants were holed in the three areas because of dense forests.

Father allegedly beaten to death by son

Jaipur, August 05: Angered by his father’s regular violent fights with his mother, 21-year old Satyendra Singh allegedly beat his father, Vishwa Singh (45), to
death with an iron pipe at Shyam enclave in Panchawala under Karni Vihar police station area early on Tuesday morning.

The son, who is unemployed, has been arrested.

Top Hizbul militant shot dead

Srinagar, August 05: A top Hizbul Mujahideen militant was today shot dead by security forces during an encounter in Doda district.

On a tip off, a joint search party of army and police launched a cordon and search operation in Behota-Marmat area of the district.

In the gunbattle that followed, the self-styled section commander of Hizbul Mujahideen identified as Noor Mohammed alias Mansoor was killed, official sources said.

An ak rifle and three magazines were recovered from the slain militant.

Mumbai, August 05: Mili Wadhva (name changed) left her house on Saturday afternoon to meet her boyfriend and his friends to kick-start the Friendship Day celebrations a day in advance. The next day the 15-year-old girl was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her house at Laxmibai Chheda Nagar in Nalasopara.

8-yr-old raped; protest at Jahangirpuri

New Delhi, August 05: An eight-year-old girl wasallegedly raped by her neighbour on the terrace of a buildingat Jahangirpuri and the family and locals staged a protesttoday in front of a police station and manhandled a policeofficer.

The girl, a class III student of Sri Guru Nanak School,was raped allegedly by her neighbour Atul after drugging herthree days ago. He is absconding, police said.

The girl after coming from school had gone to theterrace where Atul offered her some sweets laced withsedatives. He then took her to the terrace of another buildingand allegedly raped her.

Two injured in clash between two communities in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, August 05: Two persons were injured afterclashes broke out today between two communities in Ghatlodiaarea here today, police said.

The incident occurred near Prabhat Chowk, when people ofRabari and Patel communities clashed and damaged each others’properties over dispute regarding demolition of a temple, theysaid.

According to police, complaints have been filed by peopleof both communities alleging that the other had caused damageto their property. The situation is under control, they said.

Burdwan, August 05: A man and his mother died ofelectrocution today at Baranilpur in Burdwan town.

The police said Bikash Deb (35) died in the morningwhen he put his get clothes on an iron wire which touched alive electria supply line.

Three merchant navy personnel killed in road accident

Bhopal, August 05: Three merchant navy personnel, who had come to Madhya Pradesh’s Indore town to attend a marriage ceremony, died in a road accident in Bhanwarkuan area of the district, police said Tuesday.
The dead included the bride’s brother, Sameer.

The accident occurred late Monday when their car dashed against a culvert while they were going back after dinner in a hotel. All the three died on the spot.

The other two were Sunil, a resident of Delhi, and Gurmeet, of Ludhiana.

Punjab man murdered in Italy

Chandigarh, August 05: A 27-year-old youth of this Punjab town has allegedly been murdered by some unknown assailants in Italy last week, the deceased’s family members said here Tuesday.

Ramesh Kumar, who had gone to Italy in 2007, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the Italian city of Milan July 28.

“Our son has been murdered in Italy. We were informed about this by one of our relatives residing there yesterday (Monday),” Kumar’s father Madan Lal said here Tuesday.

Man rapes 100-year-old woman

Johannesburg, August 04: A man who allegedly raped a 100-year-old woman was arrested in Sharpeville, south of Johannesburg, on Tuesday, police said.

“It is alleged that the 48-year-old man had been raping the elderly woman since February,” said spokesperson Aubrey Moopeloa.

The woman’s great-grandson saw that she was bleeding and later discovered she had been raped.

He accompanied her to the Sharpeville police station where they laid charges.

Moopeloa said the man would appear in the Sebokeng Magistrate’s Court on Thursday to face charges of rape.

Ahmedabad, August 04: Over Rs 84 lakh cash was stolen bysome unknown persons after breaking into a closed house in theOdhav area of the city, police said today.

The incident came to light when Sunil Patel, owner ofhouse number one in Vaibhav Park society today found that thedoors of his house were broken, they said.

According to police, the theft could have occurredanytime in the last three days as the house was locked andnobody had visited it.

Teenage Internet addict beaten to death in China

Beijing, August 04: A teenager in a Chinese camp meant to help people fight Internet addiction was beaten to death by camp workers.

Public security authorities in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang said they have detained four people in Nanning City in association with the death of the teenager.

The detainees, all workers from the Nanning-based Qihang Salvation Training Camp, are suspected of beating 15-year-old Deng Senshan to death, a police official said.

Man found murdered in Morbi village; five others go missing

Rajkot, August 04: The charred body of a migrant agricultural labourer was found at Vanadiya village in Morbi taluka of Rajkot district on Monday.

The Rajkot Rural police are on the trail of a woman, a couple and two children, who have gone missing since the incident.

The deceased has been identified as Deepak Thakor (30).

Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased had eloped with a married woman and migrated to Morbi two years ago from their native village of Maanpur in Patan district.
