Buddha Garden rape case verdict deferred

New Delhi, August 07:A city court Friday deferred the verdict in the sensational Buddha Jayanti Park gang rape case of 2003, in which four members of the President’s Bodyguard are the accused, to Aug 13.

On July 31, Additional Sessions Judge S.K. Sarvaria had deferred the verdict till Aug7.

According to the prosecution, the victim had gone with her friend Ashish to the park near the Rashtrapati Bhavan Oct 6, 2003 and was raped by Harpreet and Satendra while Kuldeep and Manish kept guard.

Four students in Assam suspended for ragging

Guwahati, August 07: Four postgraduate students including two girls were suspended for allegedly ragging juniors at Dibrugarh University in Assam, officials said Friday.

A university spokesperson said the decision to suspend was taken after three first-semester girl students of Political Science Thursday lodged a written complaint with the vice chancellor alleging that four senior students had ‘mentally tortured’ them by asking obscene questions.

‘Militants’ planning attacks in Delhi arrested: report

New Delhi, August 07: Indian police have arrested two suspected members of the outlawed Hizbul Mujahideen militant group who were allegedly planning attacks in the capital New Delhi, a report said Friday.

The suspects, identified as Javed Ahmed and Ashiq Ali, were taken into custody in New Delhi on Thursday night, the Press Trust of India reported.

The arrests came amid tightened security ahead of India’s Independence Day celebrations on August 15.

Civilian killed in crossfire in Reasi

Srinagar, August 07: A civilian was killed in a crossfire between security forces and militants during an encounter in Mahore area of Reasi district last night, sources here today said.

”A civilian, identified as Qasim Gujjar, son of Aliya Gujjar of Thuroo Arnas was killed in the crossfire between militants and security forces in remote village Deed Mangli last night,” sources told UNI.

However, the militants engaged in the encounter managed to escape after a half-an-hour long gunbattle but a civilian was killed, sources added.

Boy killed at clinic for internet addicts

Beijing, August 07: A teenager was allegedly beaten to death in a camp designed to treat internet addiction.

Deng Senshan, 15, died less than a day after his parents sent him to the camp in southern Guangxi province. The case has led medical experts to call for laws regulating centres that treat obsessive internet surfing. Concern about such behaviour is so widespread in China, and demand for rehabilitation is so great, that some camps now advertise on television.

Murder case against cops for fake encounter

Lucknow, August 07: A murder case has been registered against six policemen in Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh for their alleged involvement in a fake encounter that took place three years ago, police said Friday.

The Crime Branch Criminal Investigation Department (CBCID), investigating the encounter of August 2006, lodged the case against two sub-inspectors and four constables.

Car smashed, SDM found dead

New Delhi, August 07: A SUB Divisional Magistrate (SDM) was found dead in her car in Rohini, Outer Delhi, early Thursday morning.

Neera Kharbanda, 44, was the SDM of Model Town — she was most likely heading home, in Paschim Vihar, when the incident took place, the police said.

Kharbanda’s body was found on the driver’s seat of her Hyundai Accent (registration number DL 2C AG 0700).

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer district) Atul Katiyar said it seems like a case of accident “at this point of time” but added that the police are investigating all possible angles.

20-yr-old held for IT exec’s murder: ‘needed money to make portfolio ’

New Delhi, August 07: Dressed in blue jeans, a designer black T-shirt and aviator glasses, Himanshu Jetley, 20, looked every bit an aspiring model as he posed candidly for the cameras outside the Kalkaji police station on Thursday.

The reason he was at the police station, though, was heinous: police claim he had murdered a mid-level executive with an IT company in her Kalkaji flat on July 28.

Man alleges assault by doctor, security guards at GMCH-32

Chandigarh, August 06: An attendant with a patient at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, was allegedly roughed up by security guards and the emergency medical officer (EMO) of the hospital on Wednesday.

Badri Prasad, (52), a resident of Sector 48, had gone to the hospital with his son, Nikhil, who was undergoing treatment at the Psychiatry department. Around noon, Badri said he was asked to get a new registration card from the emergency ward as the counters for OPD cards had already shut down.

Eight killed in road accident

Tezpur, August 06: At least eight people, including two women and three children, were killed and four others injured in a road mishap on National Highway 52 at Kolabari Kalita village under Gohpur subdivision in northern Assams Sonitpur district today.

Police informed that the accident occurred at around 0400 hrs when two trucks – one cement laden and the other ferrying passengers collided head-on. The deceased were yet to be identified, police added. Those injured have been referred to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.

Three killed as jeep plunges into gorge

Dehradun, August 06: Altogether three people were killed on the spot when the Jeep in which they were travelling fell into a gorge at Chavar Gad near Uttarkashi late last night.

According to police, three people were going to New Gaon near Uttarkashi from Lambgaon in Pratapnagar last night, when the driver lost control over the vehicle at Chavar Gad near Uttarkashi and plunged into a 200 metre deep gorge.

Two passengers were from Rishikesh and the third one was from khetpal Chhiddarvala.

5 Indians killed in Nepal hit-and-run, protests erupt

Kathmandu, August 06: Six people, including five Indians, were killed when a speeding car driven by an apparently drunk Nepali youth hit them here early on Wednesday morning, prompting angry residents to block roads demanding stern action against the culprits.

Another Indian, who was injured, while walking on the pavement of a road was admitted to a local hospital. Police suspect that the 20-year-old man who was at the wheels and his friends were returning from a casino.

Couple commit suicide after giving poison to kids

Chikmagalur, August 06: A couple committed suicide after killing their two children by giving them poison at Mudigere town in this district of Karnataka last night.

Police said the incident came to light this morning. The couple Suresh and Shalini hanged themselves from a ceiling fan after giving poision to their children Sahana(2) and Sunil(4).

The couple, who were working as daily wagers, were struggling to make both the ends meet, and reportedly took the extreme step due to poverty.

Mother kills son for repeatedly demanding chocolate

Lucknow, August 06: A mother beat her six-year-old son to death in Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli district for his repeated demands for chocolate, the police said Thursday.

‘Bandana, 32, a resident of Janhia village, has been arrested for killing her son by repeatedly beating him with a wooden stick,’ police inspector Ashok Kumar Tiwari told IANS over telephone.

‘The body of the six-year-old was recovered Wednesday from bushes in the Balkishan locality in the village. Suspecting foul play, we looked into the matter and found that it was Bandana who was behind the killing,’ said Tiwari.

20-yr-old girl dies after lorry smashes her head in Doda

Doda, August 06: A 20-year-old girl travelling in a minibus was killed on the spot when her head was smashed by a lorry coming from opposite direction near Thathri here in Jammu and Kashmir today, police sources said. The girl, identified as an undergraduate student Shanaz Bano, a resident of Thathri, was returning home in the minibus coming from Doda when the mishap took place, police said.

Police said the victim was looking out from the window when the lorry, coming from the other side, hit her head.

Police have taken cognizance of the incident.

Kashmir cops denied bail in Shopian rape-murder case

Srinagar, August 06: The district and sessions judge of Shopian in Jammu and Kashmir today rejected the bail application moved by four police officers accused of destroying evidence in the rape and murder of two local women.

While rejecting the bail application, Judge Syed Tauqeer Ahmed maintained that there was prima facie evidence against the accused. He said DNA profiling of the accused was yet to be completed and if released, they might interfere with the investigation.

Bomb Blast In Afghanistan 21 Civilians Killed

Kabul, August 06: An Afghan police chief says a roadside bomb hit a group of people traveling to a wedding in southern Afghanistan and, 21 civilians were killed.

The Afghan Ministry of Defense confirmed the Wednesday attack and said at least 20 people were killed.

Helmand provincial police chief Assadullah Sherzad says women and children were among the dead in Garmser district, where roadside bombs are frequently used to attack foreign and Afghan forces.

Thousands of U.S. Marines and British soldiers are conducting offensives in Helmand, one of the centers of the Taliban insurgency.

Freezer cash ex-congressman convicted in US corruption case

Washington, August 06: A jury on Wednesday found former congressman William Jefferson, in whose freezer police found a stash of cash, guilty of corruption charges.

In a trial held in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, the Louisiana Democrat was found guilty of seeking and collecting bribes for his personal business interests in Africa.

In all, he was convicted on 11 of 16 counts.

In a 2005 FBI raid on his home, agents found 90,000 dollars in his freezer, wrapped in foil and hidden inside frozen food packaging.

Sub Divisional Magistrate found dead

New Delhi, August 06: A woman Sub Divisional Magistrate was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her car in Outer Delhi Thursday morning.

The body of Meera, the Sub Divisional Magistrate of Model Town, was found in her car in Sector 15 of Rohini at 7:15 am, a senior police official said.

She is a resident of Paschim Vihar, the official said adding her family had been informed about the incident. Further investigations are on.

The official said the car of the 44-year-old SDM was badly damaged and it appeared that it was hit by a hard object.

Uttar Pradesh village heads threaten to stop midday meal

Lucknow, August 06: The association of village heads of Uttar Pradesh has threatened to stop the distribution of midday meals in primary schools because they can no longer pay for the cooking with the Rs.2.50 they get per child. And they haven’t even been paid this amount for a long time.
The Pradesh Gram Pradhan Sangh (PGPS), as the association is called, says this Rs.2.50 per student, called “conversion cost”, is a two-year-old rate and inadequate to cover the cost.

Fourth-year engineering college student found dead

Burdwan, August 05: A fourth-year girl student of Asansol Engineering College (AEC) was found dead under mysterious condition from her hostel room today, police sources said.

Piyu Ghanti (22), a student of the Electronics Communication branch of AEC was found hanging from her hostel room, sources said.

Police sources said they are investigating the matter but did not ruled out the possibility of suicide.

Eloped girl’s father abducts boy for revenge, held

New Delhi, August 05: A man has been arrested for abducting a six-year-old cousin of a boy with whom his daughter had eloped last month, police said.

Qadir Khan, a 38-year-old from Sitamarhi in Bihar, was arrested from Gorkhpur Tuesday for kidnapping the boy in east Delhi July 27.

The boy has been rescued from Qadir Khan’s custody and police said search was on to find Khan’s accomplices.

Punjab man killed in Italy, family awaits body

Derabassi, August 05: A 27-year-old man of this Punjab town was found dead in the Italian city of Milan and his grief-stricken family has now sought help from the government to bring his body back home.

Ramesh Kumar, who had migrated to Italy in 2007 and worked in a timber factory in Milan, was found dead under mysterious circumstances on the banks of a river July 28.

Mini bus, car collision injures 23

Srinagar, August 05: At least 23 persons were injured when their mini-bus turned turtle after colliding with a car in Pulwama district of South Kashmir today, a police spokesman said here. The accident took place at Chursoo in Awantipora, 32 kms from here on Srinagar-Jammu National highway, the spokesman said.

The injured included the driver of the car, he said adding the injured were shifted to a hospital. In a separate incident, one person was injured when he lost control over his car at Kijipora near Kangan, 40 kms from here on Srinagar-Leh National highway, and fell into a stream.
