Six undertrials escape from court lock-up, one re-arrested

Jharkhand, August 12: Six undertrials escaped from a court lock-up in Giridih district today.

One of them was re-arrested during search operation, superintendent of police A B Minz said.

Four police personnel, including the in-charge of the court lock-up, were suspended.

The undertrials escaped after removing the rods from the lock-up’s window.

They were brought to the local court for production and were lodged in the court lock-up.

A massive manhunt was launched in the district to track them and all ajoining police stations were alerted, Minz said.

Two killed, one injured in bomb explosion

Ara, August 12: Two persons were killed and another person was critically injured when a bomb which they were carrying with themselves exploded near Bihiya Bazar of Bihar’s Bhojpur district today, police said.

Three persons carrying the bomb were on their way to Jagidishpur from Bihiya on a motorcycle when the motorcyclist applied sudden brake to save a dog and the bomb exploded killing two of them on the spot and injuring another, Station House Officer (SHO) of Bihiya police station U S Kamat said.

Farmer shot dead

Krishnagar, August 12: One farmer was shot dead this morning when gunmen fired him from close range at Sathikhali-Dakshinpara in Nadia district.

The police said Samad Seikh (30) having criminal backgrounds died on the spot.

None was arrested.

Bangladeshi women arrested for cheating

New Delhi, August 12: Three persons, including two 60-year-old Bangladeshi women, were arrested in the national capital for allegedly cheating several people by luring them to buy gold bricks and change foreign currency, police said today.

Their targets used to be ‘dhaba’ (road side food stall) owners and garment shop owners by luring them with the promise of selling gold brick or exchange foreign currency, a senior police official said.

The arrested persons were identified as Jamina, Aamiran and Mehndi Hasan, a 25-year-old domestic help.

Four police personnel sacked

Kanpur, August 12: Four police personnel including a Sub-Inspector have been sacked in connection with alleged custodial death, police sources said today.

According to SP Crime, OP Singh, the four police personnel of Hanspuram police station including Sub Inspector Pappu Singh and constables Jagdish Mishra, Rakesh Singh and Anil Kumar were sacked following an order by the DIG Neera Rawat.

Two get 10 years prison term for rape

New Delhi, August 12: A Delhi court today sentenced two men to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for raping a neighbouring woman after administering her intoxicating substance.

Additional Sessions Judge Manu Rai Sethi also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each on two accused Ram Saran and Uday Raj after holding them guilty of rape.

The court refused to show leniency against the convicts saying “an act of rape tarnishes and injures the body, mind and soul of the victim and the act itself disentitles the convicts to any mercy from courts of law.”

Rs.25 lakh worth rectified spirit seized

Coimbatore, August 12: Rectified spirit worth rs.25 lakh was seized from a farm house at Annur, about 35 KM from here and two persons arrested in this connection today, polices said.

Based on information,Prohibition Wing of police carried out a raid in the farm house in the early hours and found 230 cans, each containing 35 litres of rectified spirit, hidden behind bushes, police said.

The cans were being brought from Karnataka and stored in the farm to be transported to Kerala, as and when required, they said.

Srinagar, August 12: The Jammu and Kashmir government Wednesday said it was ready to order a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the rape and murder of two Shopian women amid reports of the alleged tampering of DNA samples of the victims.
The alleged fudging of evidences rocked the state assembly Wednesday with opposition and some ruling party members insisting on a debate on the issue.

Maoists kill two cops in Jharkhand’s

Ranchi, August 12: Two cops were shot dead by Maoist rebels in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand, police said Wednesday.

According to the police, the cops from Dhanbad district, which is around 260 km from Ranchi, went to the local market Tuesday night. Maoist rebels belonging to the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) fired at them in the market. Both died on the spot.

The killed cops were Assistant Sub-Inspector Nirmal Kumar and Constable Deepak Bawari.

Woman burnt to death for giving birth to girl child

Lucknow, August 12: A 25-year-old woman was allegedly burnt to death by her husband and in-laws for giving birth to a baby girl for the second time in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh, police said Wednesday.

‘Just hours after Momeena delivered a baby girl Tuesday, she was set on fire by her husband, brother-in-law and mother-in-law,’ police inspector Somveer Singh told IANS on phone.

Singh said the three accused ran away with the newborn girl after setting Momeena on fire. Momeena, married for five years, was a resident of the Ahera village in Baghpat, some 350 km from Lucknow.

One killed, nine injured in grenade blast in J&K

Srinagar, August 12: One person was on Wednesday killed and nine others were injured in a grenade blast in Sopore in north Kashmir, 55 kms from here, police said.

Militants hurled the grenade on a security bunker near a bus stand killing a shop keeper on the spot and injuring nine others, they said.

Security forces and police immediately cordoned off the area and launched a combing operation to nab the militants.

Eight arrested for illegal mining in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, August 12: Orissa’s vigilance department Wednesday arrested at least eight people, including mining officials and a mine owner, for their involvement in illegal mining in the state, an official said.

“We have arrested eight people for their involvement in illegal mining,” Vigilance Department Director Anup Kumar Patnaik told IANS.

The vigilance department Tuesday filed cases against nine people after a probe found evidence of illegal mining in Keonjhar district, some 235 km from here, with the complicity of several government officials.

BJP Councilor escapes unhurt in attack

Anand, August 11: A BJP Councilor escaped unhurt in an attack by two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants who fired at his car here today, police said.

The incident took place when Chetan Patel, who is also Secretary of the Charotar Education Society, left his house in his car in Alkapuri area, they said.

The duo fired a couple of rounds from a revolver on Patel’s car, some 100 feet from his house. One of the bullets hit the car’s back while the other pierced the door, police said, adding the Councilor escaped unhurt.

Two infants missing from hospital

New Delhi, August 10: Two infants including a 15-day-old baby went missing from a hospital in northeast Delhi after they were brought for medical treatment by their respective parents.

The two separate incidents came into light after the parents of both children reported about their missing children, police said.

Dead man found alive, men accused of his ‘murder’ relieved

Lucknow, August 11: While parents routinely pray for their children’s long life and prosperity, a couple in Uttar Pradesh has written to President Pratibha Patil pleading for the mercy killing of their four physically-challenged sons.

Jeet Narayan and his wife Prabhavati, residing in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh, pleaded for mercy killing for their sons, aged 10-16 years, as they are stricken with muscular dystrophy.

13-year-old girl dies of swine flu in Pune, toll reaches 8

Pune, August 11: Swine flu claimed yet another life of a 13-year-old girl here today, raising the total number of victims across the country to eight.

Shruti Gawade, a student of Ahilyadevi school, became the sixth victim of the H1N1 virus in the state. Five of them died in Pune itself.

Shruti, a resident of Narayan Peth area, had been kept on ventilator since August 7 when she was brought here after being referred from a private hospital in critical condition, said Dr Pandurang Pawar, Medical Superintendent of Sasoon hospital.

Engineering college lecturer killed in car mishap

Kottayam, August 10 : A college lecturer was killed when his car collided with a van at Nedumkoody in Pampady here today, police said.

Sathish John (35) lecturer of Amal Jyothi Engineering College at Kanjirapally in the district was returning to home after alighting his sister and children at Ernakulam and his wife’s brother at Athirampuzha, they said.

He is survived by wife Grassy Maria, teacher in a private school, and two children, police said.

Mystery surrounds ‘kidnapped’ Ghaziabad student

Ghaziabad, August 10: Four days after he was allegedly kidnapped, mystery surrounds the whereabouts of a 17-year-old Ghaziabad student who Monday told his parents over phone that he has been freed by his abductors but his parents and police were still unable to trace him.
Vivek Singh, a Class 10 student of the Ingraham Institute in Raj Nagar in Ghaziabad town went to school at the usual time Aug 6, but did not return home. His parents searched for him in all likely places and when they were unable to trace him, they approached police.

One killed in police firing at Dhule

Dhule, August 10: One person was killed and 20 others injured when police opened fire on a crowd of koli community members who attacked Deputy Collector’s office here in North Maharashtra today, police said.

A `morcha’ of koli (fisherfolk) community in support of their demands turned violent while waiting to submit their memorandum. Its members pelted stones at policemen and damaged three state transport buses, they said.

A couple of policemen were injured in the stone pelting.

Koli members also ransacked Deputy Collector’s office.

Aspiring cop drops dead during recruitment rally

Raipur, August 10: A 34-year-old man died due to a cardiac arrest during a police recruitment rally in Surguja district of Chhattisgarh, police said Monday.
Vijay Kumar from Jashpur district collapsed Sunday soon after he finished a run organised by the police department in Ambikapur town, 350 km from here. The run was organised for constable recruitment.

“The man collapsed soon after he completed a 1.5 km run. We took him to the district hospital where doctors declared him brought dead,” Arvind Kujur, additional superintendent of police, told IANS.

Police arrest five, claim to solve Rs one crore loot

Noida, August 10: Police here arrested five persons and claimed to have solved Rs one crore loot case and recovered part of the booty.

Superintendent of police Greater Noida, SK Verma said that five persons were arrested and rs 11 lakh was recovered from them, while rest of the booty was with their other five accomplices who have fled to Nepal.

A manhunt has been launched to arrest the absconding persons and recover the balance booty amount, Verma said.

On July 28, Mavasi Singh, a farmer who was going to registrar office was robbed at gun point in Dankore area.

Three ragging cases reported in Himachal this year: Dhumal

Shimla, August 10: Three cases of ragging were reported in Himachal Pradesh this year and the state government has brought in an anti-ragging ordinance, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said Monday.
“Three ragging cases have been reported in educational institutes in the state this year,” Dhumal said in a written reply to Congress legislator Kaul Singh Thakur in the state assembly.

He said last year two ragging cases were reported, whereas no case was reported in 2006 and 2007.
