Push-pull local train derails

Hyderabad, August 23: Nearly 100 passengers travelling in push-pull local train had a narrow escape when the train derailed at Ramakrishnapuram on the city outskirts today morning.

The driver lost control after the train developed a technical snag and alerted the control room. The train was diverted to the loop line to avert major accident.

The incident took place at 6.40 a.m. when the train was going from Medchal to Secunderabad.

Man shot dead, wife-son injured for resisting robbery bid

Jalaun, August 23: A person was killed while his wife and son suffered bullet injuries after a group of marauders attacked them in their house in Gohana area here today.

Police said the criminals stormed the house of Umesh Soni and tried to flew the coop with the valuables.

When Umesh raised an objection, they opened fire, killing him on the spot and wounding his wife and eight-year-old son.

The injured had been admitted to hospital.

A manhunt was on to nab the culprits.

Badminton star Syed Modi’s killer gets life term

Lucknow, August 23: A court here on Saturday held Bhagwati Singh guilty of murdering badminton star Syed Modi in July 1988 and sentenced him to a life term.

Additional Sessions Judge Sheshank Shekhar passed the order in a packed courtroom.

Of the other five accused, two are dead and three were previously acquitted. (IANS)

CBI registers case against southern railway official

Chennai, August 23: The CBI registered a case against a senior official and others of southern railway on charges of misusing official position, cheating and criminal conspiracy yesteday. According to sources, a special team of the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch raided Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore and other suburban stations early on Saturday based on an information that private contractors were being allowed to run stalls ”illegally,” causing a huge loss to the Railways.

Yogita’s mother lodges threat complaint with police

Nagpur, August 23: The mother of seven-year-old Yogita Thakre, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Maharashtra BJP president Nitin Gadkari’s car on May 19, today lodged a complaint against unidentified persons alleging that they were threating her to withdraw the case, police said.

Vimal Thakre in her complaint said that some persons in police uniform had visited their house and even called on mobile and threatened her to withdraw the case.

Business professional held for raping domestic help in Noida

Noida, August 23: A 40-year-old professional of a leading electronic company was arrested on Saturday for allegedly raping his domestic help, police said.

The 22-year-old woman, originally from Jharkhand, was being allegedly raped by Henry Daniel, a senior HR executive with Samsung India, for the last six months though the matter came to light only on Saturday when the woman, along with NGO workers who had placed her as a domestic help in Daniel’s house, lodged a complaint, police said.

Husband throws acid on wife

Mumbai, August 23: A 28-year-old woman suffered severe burn injuries after her husband threw acid while she was on her way home on Saturday afternoon at Khar. Anita Gaikwad is feared to have lost her vision in the attack.

Doctors at the Bhabha Hospital said that Gaikwad is unable to see at the moment but further treatment is on and it is too early to ascertain if she has lost her vision.

According to the police, Gaikwad, who worked as a compounder at Prabhu clinic in Khar was on her way home at around 1.30pm when her husband Avinash, threw acid at her.

2 members of president’s body guards get life term

New Delhi, August 23: The six year long wait is finally over as a local court in the national capital sentenced two Presidential Guards to life imprisonment for abducting and raping a 17-year-old Delhi University student in broad daylight.

The two main accused, Harpreet Singh and Satyender Singh, had raped the student in Buddha Jayanti Park where she had gone with a friend. The court also sentenced Kuldeep Singh and Manish Kumar, who had helped the accused commit the crime, for 10 years of imprisonment.

Boy succumbs to burns from bus accident

Airoli, August 23: Ronit Gore, 13, one of the 21 students injured when a school bus caught fire on Thursday, succumbed to his burns on Saturday at the National Burns Centre, Airoli. Ronit was a class 8 student of Changu Kana Thakur school of Panvel.

“When Ronit was brought to the hospital, he had breathing problems since he had inhaled a lot of smoke. His lungs had collapsed. We did tracheostomy on him on Friday and he was kept on ventilation since then. On Saturday, sudden cardio respiratory arrests led to his death,” senior doctor Ganesh Pawar at NBC’s ICU department said.

Mumbai, August 23: For the ‘crime’ of stealing and eating chocolates and sweets, a 10-year-old girl, Renu Mhatre (name changed as she is a minor), was allegedly beaten up and burnt by 32-year-old Urvashi Dhanorkar, in whose house she was working as a domestic help. Dhanorkar, a resident of the plush Royal Classic Complex in Jogeshwari was arrested by the Amboli police early on Saturday.

Husband beats wife to death

Noida, August 23: A 21-year-old woman who was married only a month ago was allegedly beaten to death by her husband after an altercation over a domestic issue, police said Saturday.

Kamla’s husband Kuttan continuously hit her on the head with a wooden stool late Friday in their rented house in Bahlolpur, police said.

Hearing her cries, the neighbours called the police. Kamla was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“We have arrested the accused,” said city police chief A.K. Tripathi.

Car bomb attack kills two in Peshawar

Peshawar, August 23: Two people were killed and two others seriously injured Saturday in a car bomb attack in this northwestern Pakistani city, the Online news agency reported.

The incident took place near the Hayatabad Medical Complex in Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

The victims were targeted by a banned organisation in Khyber Agency, an official said, adding that the bomb was placed inside the victims’ car and was detonated through a remote control device.

Meanwhile, the police have detained two people in connection with the case.

Four injured in village clash

Ambala, August 22: Four persons were injured in a clash which broke out today in a village in the district between two communities.

Four persons were injured in a clash in Thakurpura Kalalti, 30 km from here which started after a man belonging to one community was assaulted by members of the other community, police said.

Om Pal Dhiman was crossing the village’s street when a few members of the other community allegedly attacked him. In the ensuing clash, three members of the community received injuries and were admitted to Medical College Mulana, police said.

Local court gives 10 years RI to son for killing mother

Etah, August 22: A local court here today sentenced 10 years rigorous imprisonment to an accused for killing his mother yesterday.

According to the prosecution, Additional Sessions Judge Gyan Prakash gave 10 years RI to Shyam Singh for killing his mother Ramawati on July 11, 2008 in village Nagar Tar.

Another local court of Additional Sessions Judge RK Jain also gave 10 years RI to a husband and three others for poisoning his wife.

As per the prosecution, Dev Kumari died on August 25, 2008 in village Sewari.

Women set ablaze by in-laws

New Delhi, August 22: A 30-year-old woman was set ablaze, allegedly by her husband and in-laws, because she was unable to conceive after nine years of marriage, police said Saturday.
Lata suffered 55 percent burn injuries and is in a critical state in a hospital.

Her husband Sanjay, 31, mother-in-law and brother-in-law have been arrested after Lata accused them of the crime in her statement to the police.

Case against seven persons for cheating, forgery

Rewari, August 22: Police today registered a case of cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy against seven persons in connection with allegedly deceitful sale of church land here and shops.

The case was registered by the Model Town police after a complaint was made to Rewari Deputy Commissioner T L Satya Prakash by Delhi Diocese Trust Association Secretary Suresh Kumar who alleged that Alberd Singh, a resident of Aligarh, had deceitfully sold 1129 square yards of land of the compound of the local church as well as its ten shops comprising an area of 288 square yards.

Two militants killed in car explosion

Islamabad, August 22: Two members of a banned militant group were killed and five others injured in an explosion in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar today, officials said.

The blast was caused by explosives planted in a car driven by Mubin Afridi, the spokesman of the outlawed Ansar-ul-Islam group, Peshawar police chief Sifwat Ghayur told reporters. The other man killed in the attack was a friend of Afridi, he said.

Delhi businessman robbed of Rs.1.5 mn

New Delhi, August 22: Four armed men Saturday barged into a businessman’s house here in broad daylight and stole jewellery worth Rs.1.5 million (Rs.15 lakh), police said.
The robbers forcibly entered Brij Bhushan’s Ashok Vihar residence in northwest Delhi around 2 p.m., a police officer said.

“Four men entered the house – two from the main door and two from other entrance – and at gunpoint asked for the locker keys. They fled with a bag containing jewellery worth Rs.1.5 million and some cash,” the officer added.

Three convicted for attacking Sikh family in 1984 riots

New Delhi, August 22: A court here Saturday convicted three people for attempting to murder three members of a Sikh family during the 1984 riots here following the assassination of prime minister Indira Gandhi.
Additional Sessions Judge Surinder S. Rathi held Mangal Sen alias Billa, Brij Mohan Verma and Bhagat Singh guilty of attempt to murder, rioting, and dacoity in Shastri Nagar area of north Delhi. The court will announce the quantum of sentence Aug 29.

Thirteen children hospitalised near Alwar

Alwar, August 22: Nearly 13 students were hospitalised today in Rajgarh sub-division here while 30 were treated on spot after they complained of stomach pain and vomitting following consumption of mid-day meal in school, official sources said.

“Thirteen students of Government Senior Primary School of Odhpur village were admitted to hospital while rest were given primary treatment on spot by the medical team,” they said, adding condition of admitted students is out of danger.

TV actress beats, burns little maid for eating

Mumbai, August 22: The police nabbed a television actress here on Saturday after she beat and burnt her 10-year-old maid because the child had been “caught

The actress, Urvashi Dhanorkar, has been accused of brutally assaulting 10-year-old Rameshwari, locking up the child at home and employing a minor as a labourer, said a duty officer of Amboli police station in Andheri west.

“The victim has been sent for a medical check-up and we are awaiting the reports,” he said.

Muthoot finance group businessman killed

Alappuzha, August 22: Paul George Muthoot, a prominent businessman of the Kerala-based Muthoot Finance group, was stabbed to death by a 12-member gang in the wee hours of today at Pallathuruthi near here, police said.

George, son of M G George who heads the Muthoot group, was waylaid and killed by the gang shortly after midnight while he was returning home from a resort in his car, police said.

Police said business rivalry was suspected behind the murder.

Jawan involved in Manipur blast arrested

Imphal, August 22: An India Reserve Battalion jawan allegedly involved in the grenade attack at a private hospital at the Manipur capital complex here, has been arrested, official sources said today.

The jawan T Munal was allegedly engaged by militant outfit Kangleipak Communist Party-Military Council (KCP-MC) to explode the grenade.

Munal has allegedly confessed to attacking two other private hospitals earlier on the orders of the militant outfit.
