Woman, daughter drown in underground water tank in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, August 24: A woman and her two-year-old daughter drowned in an underground water tank in their residence in Vatva area of the city, police said today.

The incident occurred late last night, when Saraswati Chauhan (22) allegedly jumped into the underground tank of her house in Gayatrinagar society in Vatva, to save her daughter Sonu who accidentally fell into the tank, they said.

According to police, Saraswati’s husband Anand was at work when the incident happened.

Assistant SI held for drinking liquor in police station

Rajkot, August 24: An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) has been arrested for consuming liquor in police station, police said today.

Mahendrasinh Jadeja, attached to Gondal police station, along with other Constables, was found in drunken state during a surprise visit by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) A C Jadeja on Saturday night, they said.

The Constables managed to run away, but the ASI was apprehended.

The DySP himself lodged a complaint against the ASI and asked the police officials to nab the Constables, police said.

Youth Congress workers injured in cane-charge in MP

Sagar, August 24: Twelve youth Congress (YC) workers suffered injuries today when police cane charged them and fired teargas shells to disperse demonstrators, protesting against alleged corruption in a local municipal body, police said.

The youth wing workers had held a rally at Teen Madia addressed by Congress MLAs Govind Rajput and Narayan Prasad Prajapati in protest against the alleged corruption in the Sagar Municipal Corporation.

Farmer ends life

Amravati, August 24: A 60-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide due to crop failure, sources said today.

Narayan Krushnaji Kawale, a resident of from Hingana Kasarkhed village, consumed poison and died at District General Hospital at Yavatmal yesterday, they said.

Kawade had three acres of land in which he had sowed soyabean. But due to worm attack, the crop got destroyed due to which he was facing financial crisis, it was learned.

Businessman’s murder: 11 held

Alappuzha, August 24: Eleven gang members wanted in connection with the murder of a businessman were arrested today, with police discounting the possiblity of the killing being the result of a pre-planned attack.

IGP Winson M Paul, heading the team probing the case, told reporters here that Paul Muthoot George appeared to have been murdered by the gang on a “sudden provocation” after they came across him at a deserted spot on Alappuzha-Changanssery road early on Saturday.

Teacher killed in accident

Amravati, August 24: A teacher was fatally knocked dead by an unidentified truck on Amravati-Teosa Road near here today, police said.

The deceased, Ambadas Sakharwade, was heading towards Karala village on his motorcycle when the mishap took place, they said.

The truck driver fled from the spot after the incident.

Twin bomb blast accused further remanded to police custody

Kozhikode, August 24: A local court today ordered that Abdul Halim, an accused in the March 2003 twin bomb blast case here, be remanded to five days police custody.

The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court’s order came after the Crime Branch officials sought Halim’s custody for some more days to question him into the twin bomb blasts in two bus stations here in which two persons, including a police constable, were injured.

Man dies while saving cyclist

New Delhi, August 24: A 35-year-old man died in the national capital when his motorcycle hit the pavement while trying to save a cyclist in south-east Delhi, police said today.

The victim, identified as Darmiyan Singh, a driver, was returning home when the incident took place in Sangam Vihar last night.

A cyclist came in front of his motorcycle and Singh tried to avoid the cyclist, police said, adding after which his vehicle hit the pavement.

He suffered head injuries and was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre where doctors declared him brought dead.

Spiderman thief arrested

Siliguri , August 24: A man, who allegedly stole from houses by jumping from one roof to another and by climbing sanitation pipes of buildings, was arrested here today.

The police said Saroj Thapa, a resident of Bhutan, was caught red handed when stealing mobile sets and cash from a hotel on Hill Cart road by climbing along the sanitary pipe.

Locals and hotel workers caught him and handed over to the police this morning, officials said.

Thapa would prefer congested business establishments for operation, the police said.

PRO held for threatening to kidnap Maha minister’s daughter

Mumbai, August 24: A public relation officer (PRO) for a private hospital was today arrested for allegedly making an anonymous call at Mumbai police control room stating that Minister of State for Home (Rural) Nitin Raut’s daughter would be kidnapped, police said today.

The accused identified as Rohit Gaikwad (31) was nabbed from his residence at Nerul in neighbouring Navi Mumbai district, police said adding that he intended to take revenge on police department.

Buta slams CBI for summons; refuses to appear

New Delhi, August 24: Refusing to appear before the CBI in connection with a corruption case involving his son, Buta Singh has made it clear that the agency had no mandate to summon him as he was a Constitutional functionary having powers of a civil court.

In a two page letter to CBI Director Ashwani Kumar, Singh, Chairman of the National Commission for Schedule Caste (NCSC), questioned the CBI summoning a constitutional functionary “without following the mandate of law”.

ATM machines catches fire

Siliguri, August 24: Two ATMs of State Bank of India today caught fire at Hati More in Subhaspally here.

The police cordoned off the area and the cause of fire was not immediately known, Additional Superintendent of Police, Gaurav Sharma said.

The extent of damage would later be known, sources said.

Delhi University student commits suicide

New Delhi, August 24:A 22-year-old student of Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College was found hanging in her hostel room, police said Monday.

Ritveja Singh, a third year student of the college, was found hanging in her room in a private hostel in Mukherjee Nagar area in north Delhi, a police official said.

According to police, Ritveja’s body was badly decomposed and she might have died at least two days back.

Smuggled elephant tusks hidden under snail shells

Hanoi, August 24:Vietnamese customs inspectors have discovered more than two tonnes of elephant tusks hidden in a shipping container full of snail shells from Kenya, an official said Monday.

Bui Hoang Duong, head of the customs inspection department at the northern port of Haiphong, said inspectors opened the container Friday as part of enhanced scrutiny of shipping from Tanzania, due to recent cases of ivory smuggling.

The container’s waybill said it had been loaded by a Vietnamese carrier, Vinashin Mariner, in the Tanzanian port of Zanjiba.

11 arrested for Muthoot group scion’s murder

Alappuzha (Kerala), August 24:Kerala Police Monday announced the arrest of 11 people for the murder of 32-year-old Paul M. George, son of prominent businessman and head of one of four groups of the Muthoot business house M.G. George Muthoot.

George was murdered Friday night.

“George was driving a Ford Endeavour vehicle and at Pallathuruthy he hit a two wheeler. The vehicle not stopping after hitting the two-wheeler angered a group of people who were waiting to get their tyre repaired. This group followed George’s vehicle,” Inspector General of Police Vinson M. Paul said.

Nine killed in collision

Salem (Tamil Nadu), August 24: Nine persons were killed and three others injured when a bus collided with a lorry near Sulagiri in Krishnagiri district in the wee hours today.

The victims included the driver and conductor of the state-run bus, police said.

The injured were taken to Bangalore, they said.

Traffic on the national highway was held up for more than 90 minutes due to the accident.

Surat intern doctor caught for ‘strip party’ at hostel

Surat, August 24: In a shocking incident, an intern doctor of New Civil Hospital and two others were nabbed for their involvement in a ‘strip’ party and consuming liquor in a hostel room of Government Medical College in Surat (GMCS) on Sunday afternoon.

Three call girls who were specially called for the bash were also arrested.

The party was busted by hostel warden who was on a routine round during that time.
According to information, Nimesh Varma, the warden heard music from one of the rooms of the boys hostel in G block.

Youth held for thrashing elderly woman in fit of road rage

New Delhi, August 24: A young man who works in a security company in Gurgaon has been arrested for allegedly thrashing an elderly woman and dragging her on the road because she asked him to drive slowly, police said Monday.

The 22-year-old man, identified as Ashu, was arrested from his home in Pira Garhi village near west Delhi’s Paschim Vihar locality late Sunday.

Lucknow, August 23: Initial investigations by the police in the adulterated blood trading racket in Lucknow, busted Saturday, has revealed the involvement of many hospitals and blood banks, police said Sunday.

Police Saturday arrested six people from a hideout in Thakurganj area of the state capital and recovered nearly 100 units of blood from them.

Woman roughed up for advising youth to drive slowly

New Delhi, August 23: Giving advice to a 22-year-old man to drive slowly turned into a nightmare for an elderly woman, as she was beaten and dragged by her neck some distance by the angry motorist in the national capital.

Kiran Anand, 57, was riding pillion with her daughter, Aneesha on a two-wheeler, when they stopped at a red light in Pashchim Vihar area in west Delhi Saturday evening. A speeding black Alto car stopped very close to them, scaring her as the driver braked suddenly, a police officer said Sunday.

Two killed by Maoists in West Bengal

Kolkata, August 23: Maoists have shot dead two people in West Bengal’s West Midnapore allegedly because they were working against the rebels, police said Sunday.

The killings took place in the Belpahari forest region late Saturday night, an official said.

“Two people, Karan Murmu and Lal Murmu, were killed by suspected Maoists at Shankhabhanga area of Belpahari forest region late last (Saturday) night,” West Midnapore Police Superintendent M.K Verma told.

4.3 kg ivory seized

Dehra Dun, August 23: Forest officials have seized 4.3 kg of ivory worth Rs two lakh in the international market and arrested a person in this connection near Kashipur town of Udhamsingh Nagar district, official sources said here.

Yatendra Chauhan was arrested when forest department team following a tip-off, stopped him while he was on his way to Kashipur. On checking his bag, 4.3 kg of ivory was recovered. However, his accomplice Devendra Bist managed to flee from the scene.

On interrogation, Chauhan said they were going to Kashipur to sell the ivory.

15-kg Charas recovered in Samba district

Srinagar, August 23: Police recovered 15-kilograms of charas from a car with the accused managed to escape in Samba district of Jammu region.

”Police intercepted a car at a check point last evening on Jammu-Kathua National Highway near Sapwal in Samba,” sources said adding that on seeing police party, the smugglers, escaped from the spot leaving the vehicle.

However, during frisking, police recovered 15-kilograms of charas, hidden in the car packed in five packets of 3-kg each.

”The vehicle bearing Punjab based fake registration number, was also seized,” they added.

One killed, seven injured in Kashmir

Srinagar, August 23: A man was killed and seven others were injured in overnight road accidents in Kashmir valley, official sources said here today.

One Gulzar Ahmad Beig was hit and critically wounded by a vehicle at Magam Hanjiweera in north Kashmir district of Baramulla. He was immediately rushed to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) where he later died, the sources said.

Two vehicles collided near court complex at Pattan resulting in injuries to two people, including driver of a maruti car. The injured were later admitted to hospital.

Husband beats wife to death

New Delhi, August 23: A 21-year-old woman who was married only a month ago was allegedly beaten to death by her husband after an altercation over a domestic issue, police said Saturday.

Kamla’s husband Kuttan continuously hit her on the head with a wooden stool late Friday in their rented house in Bahlolpur, police said.

Hearing her cries, the neighbours called the police. Kamla was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

‘We have arrested the accused,’ said city police chief A.K. Tripathi.
