110 kg sandalwood seized, four held

Kannur, August 26: Police seized 110 kg of sandalwood from an autorickshaw and arrested four people in connection with transporting the illegal sandalwood at Pazhayangadi junction under Valapatnam police limits in early hours of today.

Police said the arrested were identified as Sharafudheen (28), P V Nazeer (28), Moosa (26) and Premarajan P K (50), all hailing from Peruvamba and Kurumathur near Talparamaba in the district.

During patrolling, police intercepted the autorickshaw and seized the sandalwoods, valued at more than Rs one lakh in domestic market, police added.

40 injured in bus accident

Kozhikode, August 26: As many as 40 passengers were injured in an accident involving two private buses at Tiruvannur Nada in this district of Kerala today.

Police said the accident occurred when the private bus proceeding to Vashikadavu in Malappuram district collided with another bus coming from the opposite direction on the by-pass road.

Some of the injured were admitted to Kozhikode Medical College and Malabar Instituted of Medical Sciences, police added.

Police unleash brute force, to ‘subdue’ student with mental ailment

Raipur, August 26: College student Sanchita Sinha, 22, was beaten brutally by the police at a public place in Durg, 35 km west of the Chhattisgarh capital on Monday.

Eyewitnesses and police sources said Sanchita, who belongs to Jharkhand, got violently hysterical on her way back home after taking an exam in her college and began throwing stones at passers-by in a fit of insanity.

Fleeing hotel staff held for stealing money

Mumbai, August 26: Railway police today arrested a hotel employee, about to leave the city, from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) for allegedly stealing over Rs9,000 cash and mobile phones of his colleagues.

The manager of Hotel Spice Court at Mira Road, Alexander alerted the railway police about Shakir Ali Ansari 21, who was to leave by Lucknow bound Pushpak Express this morning with the cash and phones.

Man chases thief, nabs entire gang

Mumbai, August 26: In an incident at Marine Drive last week, a private vehicle driver almost lost a laptop to a gang of thieves, but he immediately discovered the theft, chased the thief and got the notebook back. Rajesh Shankar Jadhav, 23, then alerted the police and helped the cops arrest the gang trained in duping unvigilant drivers and robbed them of laptops.

The gang used to operate mainly near Churchgate railway station, Eros cinema, Mantralaya, Azad Maidan, CST railway station and Fort.

Woman to be rearrested for torturing 10-yr-old maid

Mumbai, August 26: The mother of a child artist, who was released on bail after being arrested for allegedly torturing and assaulting her minor domestic help in suburban Andheri, will be rearrested, a senior minister said today.

“Urvashi Dhanorkar will be rearrested and booked under the Child Trafficking and Bonded Labour Acts,” Labour Minister Nawab Malik told reporters here.

Dhanorkar allegedly assaulted her 10-year-old domestic help Rameshwari Jadhav, causing injuries to her eyes and arms.

Sugar worth Rs 1.5 lakh seized in Nanded

Nanded, August 26: Sugar worth Rs 1.5 lakh was seized from a tempo here this morning, police said.

The sweetener, kept in 45 bags, was being taken to be sold in black market, they said.

The tempo driver, Shaikh Javed Shaikh Gulab, has been arrested and a case registered against three other persons also, police said.

Sub-inspector Sanjeevan Kirkale said the tempo was intercepted on Bhokar Kinwat Road.

Gangsters snatch Rs 5 lakh at gun point in Noida

Noida, August 25: Unidentified gangsters snatched Rs 5.80 lakh from a contractor at gun point in Maha Maya Flyover at Amity crossing in the city today.

The incident has been the latest in a series of five robberies in Noida and Greater Noida in the last two days.

While contractor Mohammad Ansar was robbed of Rs 5.80 lakh at gun point by two bikers, two other men on a bike had snatched a bag containing money and valuables from a woman yesterday.

Residential building collapses in Mumbai

Mumbai, August 25: A four-storey residential building collapsed in south Mumbai on Tuesday. Several people are feared trapped under the debris, fire brigade officials said.

Fire brigade vehicles and ambulances have been rushed to the building, ‘Khatav Mansion’, in Lamington area, they said.

“At around 1900 hours, I heard a huge sound, like an explosion, and saw the building collapsing.

Within minutes, the air in the area was filled with dust particles,” said advocate Jayesh Vithalani, an eyewitness.

Nawada, August 25: In a tragic incident, a bridge on river Phalgu in Bihar’s Nawada district collapsed on Tuesday, killing at least 6 people and injuring several others.

The bridge was 80 years old and was badly in need of repair.

The incident occurred when several vehicles were crossing the bridge.

HM militant killed in Mahore encounter

Srinagar, August 25: A Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant was killed early today in an fierce gun-battle which was still underway at Mahore in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, police sources here said.

Acting on a tip-off, a troops of Rashtriya Rifles and police launched a combing and search operation in the upper reaches of Mahore early this morning, sources told UNI.

”One militant, believed to be of HM outfit, has been killed in the operation,” an official said.

Gunbattle was still underway, sources added.

Lucknow, August 25: A doctor has been booked for allegedly raping a 23-year-old Dalit woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Mau district, police said Tuesday.
O.N. Verma, who owns and runs a private nursing home in Sahadatpur locality of Mau, allegedly raped the Dalit woman inside the operation theatre (OT) Monday.

“The victim, who hails from Azamgarh, Sunday came to Verma’s nursing home along with her mother for treatment of gynaecological problems. At that time, the woman was admitted in the general ward. A lady doctor of the nursing home was treating her,” police inspector J.P. Tiwari told IANS.

Hong Kong man jailed for molesting girl he met online

Hong Kong, August 25: A 26-year-old man has been jailed in Hong Kong after being convicted of molesting a 13-year-old girl he met in an internet chatroom, a court report said Tuesday.

Cheung Ho-pan was found guilty of four counts of indecent assault of the girl he met online in early 2007. He was sentenced to three years and 10 months.

At the hearing Monday, the court heard the victim, now 15, agreed to meet Cheung in May 2007 after taking part in sex chats with him online.

One arrested with fake currency

Agartala, August 25: One person was arrested with fake Indian currency in North Tripura district here today.

According to police, one Md Abdul Hannan, a resident of Kailashahar, first purchased fish from the Pecharthal market and paid the amount to a seller.

But the seller detected that the Rs five hundred note that was given to him was fake and immediately informed the police about the crime.

Subsequently, Hannan was arrested and Rs 4,500 fake currency was recovered from his possession.

Bihar policemen under fire for wearing khadi

Patna, August 25: Hundreds of members of two police associations in Bihar, who are wearing khadi instead of their uniform, are in trouble. The police headquarters will set up a committee to decide whether policemen should be allowed to wear khadi instead of their uniform.

The state’s Director General of Police (DGP) Anand Shankar said Tuesday a committee would decide on uniform issues in the state. “The members of associations have to wear uniforms if the committee recommends it,” he said.

Maoists blow up another mobile tower in Jharkhand

Latehar (Jharkhand), August 25: Maoists today blew up a mobile tower in Latehar district on the second day of their 48-hour bandh in five states, including Jharkhand.

The banned activists of the CPI(Maoists) went to Lali village in the wee hours, packed explosives inside the tower and triggered the blast, police said.

This is the third mobile tower to be blown up by the Maoists in two days. Yesterday, they bombed and destroyed two towers in neighbouring Palamau district.

Rs 2.5 lakh jewellery looted in Kanpur

Lucknow, August 25: Armed criminals looted jewellery worth Rs 2.5 lakh in Moosanagar area of Kanpur Dehat district last night.

Police said after threatening two employees of a jewellery shop, the criminals robbed the gold ornaments and escaped.

A case has been registered and the raids were on to nab the criminals.

Chennai couple murder accused dies in custody

Chennai, August 25: A double murder case in Chennai turned into a major controversy involving the city police after the accused died in their custody on Tuesday.

Rajan, who died in the police custody, had allegedly gunned down a retired merchant navy captain and his wife at their home in posh Pannayur after looting money and jewellery on Monday, but was caught and allegedly thrashed before being handed over to the police.

The couple’s daughter-in-law and grand children had suffered severe injuries and were still undergoing treatment in a hospital.

Suspected terrorist opens fire at rly station, one killed

Ludhiana, August 25: A suspected terrorist today opened fire at the railway station here, killing a vendor and injuring two GRP head constables when they tried to check his luggage, police said.

The firing took place when the two Government Railway Police constables of the narcotics cell tried to check the bag of the suspected terrorist in Jammu-bound Jhelum Express which arrived here from Pune around 3.30 am at platform No 4 of the railway station, they said.

Hizbul militant killed in Jammu

Jammu, August 25: A Hizbul Mujahideen militant was killed by security forces in an early morning operation that was still underway in a mountain area of Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday, police said.

The operation in the upper reaches of Mahore, 150 km from here, was being carried out by a joint team of the Indian Army and the state police. The body of the militant, believed to be from the Hizbul Mujahideen, has not yet been recovered as the gunfight was continuing.

Man opens fire at Ludhiana railway station, kills one

Ludhiana, August 25: A suspected terrorist, who opened fire and killed one person at the railway station in this industrial hub of Punjab Tuesday morning was arrested, police said.

According to police officials, the accused, whose identity could not be revealed due to security reasons, was travelling to Pathankot on the Jhelum Express. Police also arrested the suspect’s wife who was accompanying him.

Two arrested for burglary in tent house

New Delhi, August 25: Two men were arrested in the capital for allegedly stealing Rs 3.25 lakh and credit cards from a tent house where they were employed, police said today.

Anand Thakur (35) and Brahamdev (19), both hailing from Bihar’s Katihar, were caught on Friday, a day after they committed burglary at Kakkar Tent House.

Police have recovered Rs 80,000 and stolen credit cards from them, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H G S Dhaliwal said.

During investigation, it was learnt that few employees who had worked at the tent house could be involved in the theft.

Air crash averted at Mumbai airport

Mumbai, August 24: Two private planes took off almost simultaneously from the same runway at the Mumbai airport Sunday morning, narrowly averting an air disaster, an official said Sunday.

A probe has been ordered into the incident by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the official said.

According to a DGCA official, the incident occurred when the Air Traffic Control reportedly gave clearance to the pilots of the two chartered aircraft to take off around the same time.

Policemen exchange fire with Naxals in Gadchiroli

Nagpur, August 24: An exchange of fire took place between police and a group of axals in Sonsuri forest in Kurkheda taluk of Gadchiroli district this evening, police said.

One 303, and four 12 bore rifles, apart from some Naxal literature, were recovered from the spot, they said.

The exact number of Naxals injured could not be known immediately. However, no policeman was injured in the encounter, they said.
