IIT student found dead in Howrah

Midnapur (WB), August 28: An IIT Kharagpur student’s body was found on Thursday on the banks of river Ganges in Howrah, police said.

Sudip Bhattacharya, a resident of Durgapur, studying at the IIT Rajeev Gandhi Law School was missing since August 24, they said.

However, the reason of his death is yet to be ascertained.

Four killed as Maoists attack home in Jharkhand

Ranchi, August 28: Maoist rebels gunned down four people, including a woman and a 12-year-old girl, after raiding a home on the outskirts of this Jharkhand capital early Friday.

A group of about 20 armed Maoists attacked the home of Digambar Mahto in Bundu, about 45 km from here, at 1.30 a.m. Friday, police said.

The hurled a bomb and then shot dead a woman and two students who were living in the house as tenants. Mahto’s 12-year-old daughter was also killed, while his younger daughter, 10, has been injured.

Bikers rob Delhi jeweller

New Delhi, August 28: In a daring daylight robbery, two motorcycle-borne men snatched a bag said to contain gold jewellery worth Rs 4.2 million, police said Thursday.

Pradeep Kumar Bedi, a jewellery supplier, had just stepped out of his house in Rajouri Garden area of west Delhi at around 3 p.m. with a bag containing gold jewellery worth Rs 4.2 million, when two men on a motorcycle snatched the bag and fled, a police officer said.

Bedi, who runs his business from his house, called the police and informed them of the incident.

52-year-old woman found murdered in Delhi

New Delhi, August 27: The body of a 52-year-old woman, with strangulation marks on her neck, was found in her east Delhi house Thursday, police said.
“A call was received at around 4 in the evening about the incident. Santosh’s body was discovered by her domestic help. She had strangulation marks on her neck and the house had been ransacked,” a senior police officer said.

Raped baby struggling for life in hospital

Jamshedpur, August 27: A one-and-a-half-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped by her neighbour, was struggling for life in the intensive care unit (paediatrics) of Tata Main hospital here.

The baby was still in a state of drowsiness and has been put on oxygen as her condition was unstable, hospital sources said today.

The girl was raped on Tuesday night by a youth, who lifted her through an open window of her house in Carriage Colony Muslim bustee, when she was sleeping.

After raping the girl, the youth fled the spot leaving her crying, her father Atar Khan said.

Himachal man held with 19 kg hashish

Shimla, August 27: A drug peddler was arrested in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh with 19 kg of fine quality hashish (cannabis) worth crores in the international market, a police official said.
“This (Thursday) morning a drug peddler was arrested in Banjar area of Kullu for carrying the fine quality hashish,” Superintendent of Police K.K. Indoria told IANS by phone.

The arrested man, Shyam Singh, is a resident of Kullu district and has been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), he said.

Chandigarh, August 27: A special court of CBI awarded a punishment of 18 months to an army medal winner colonel along with 6 other army personnel in a 17 year old fake purchasing case.

Judge Darshan Singh found all 7 people including the material supplier guilty and sentenced an imprisonment of 18 months.

Two ULFA militants killed in encounter in Assam

Nalbari, August 27: Two ULFA militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Assam’s Nalbari district Thursday, official sources said here.

Acting on a tip-off about the militants taking shelter in Jarpaluk village, a joint team of the army and police launched an operation and cordoned off the village since last night.

The militants in a bid to escape opened fire this morning and the security forces retaliated and the duo were killed in the exchange.

Man blinded and lynched over land dispute

Patna, August 27: A daily wage labourer in Bihar was blinded and then beaten to death allegedly by a group of powerful villagers over a land dispute, police said Thursday.

Chhotelal Bind, who was in his 20s, was killed Wednesday in Aurangabad’s Lohri village, about 100 km from here, over a small piece of land, police said.

‘The victim was blinded after his eyes were badly damaged and then he was beaten to death. Preliminary investigations suggest that the dispute was over land,’ a police official said.

Over half a dozen people have been named as accused in the case.

Indian man arrested for marrying 14 women

New Delhi, August 27: A former engineer with India’s flagship carrier, Air India, was arrested in Mumbai and accused of marrying 14 women over the past two and a half years, news reports said Thursday. The police arrested Tushar Waghmare, 40, alias Tushar Bapat, after five of the women he “married” registered complaints, the Times of India newspaper reported.

Waghmare was sacked by Air India soon after his August 18 arrest.

Rs 10 cr seized from VHP leader’s possession in Jaipur

Jaipur, August 27: In a key onslaught against the tax evaders, the Income Tax Department on Wednesday recovered cash worth Rs 10 crore and jewellery worth Rs 57 lakh from the possession of financial broker and well-known VHP leader Damodar Modi.

A team of I-T sleuths led by Additional Director of Income Tax Prasannjeet Singh made the recovery after raiding two residential premises and an office complex of Modi.

This is considered as one of the highest cash seizure ever made in Rajasthan by the IT department.

Two killed in mine accident

Burdwan, August 27: Two miners were killed when a large chunk of coal fell on them in a mine owned by the Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) in Burdwan district today, police said. The accident occurred at Satgram project colliery in Ranigunj area when the block of coal fell on Parimal Khawas (50) and Arsila Bishoi (45) killing them on the spot.

After the incident, mine workers demonstrated and demanded compensation and job for the family members of the victims. ECL Managing Director S Chakraborty said jobs and compensation would be provided to the next of kin of the victims as per rule.

Prime accused, SPO arrested in J&K fake currency racket

Jammu, August 27: The prime accused in a fake currency racket was arrested along with a special police officer (SPO) during a raid in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

Acting on the disclosures made by arrested Territorial Army (TA) jawans– Mohammad Inayat Hussain and Mohammad Aslam, who were found to be in possession of fake currency with a face value of Rs 1.70 lakh– police conducted raids in the district yesterday.

They nabbed SPO Ziauddin and prime accused Nizamuddin and recovered counterfeit notes with a face value of Rs 17,000 from them.

Doctor held for porn films on women patients

Raipur, August 27: A homeopathic doctor who practiced in a Chhattisgarh village and his cousin have been arrested for allegedly making pornographic films on women patients and even employees, police said Thursday.

Ashish Sharma, 32, and his cousin Abhishek Sharma, 25, were arrested late Wednesday from Adsena village in Raipur district, about 25 km from here, following raids on the clinic.

Woman burnt alive by colleagues in Varanasi

Varanasi, August 27: In a shocking incident, some employees of Varanasi Municipal Corporation allegedly burnt alive their one woman colleague when she was staging demonstration outside municipal commissioner office demanding release of her due salary.

The victim was identified as Bhagirathi. She alleged in her dying declaration that her colleagues set her on fire. Bhagirathi launched a demo to press for her various demands.

Woman lynched for carrying goat

Lucknow, August 27: Her life for a goat – that’s how it was for a 45-year-old woman in Uttar Pradesh who went to meet relatives carrying the animal under her arm but was lynched after locals thought she had stolen it.
Vimla Devi was killed Wednesday in Rudrapur town in Deoria district, about 300 km from here. According to police, Vimla Devi was accosted by locals who asked her where she had got the goat from. She couldn’t give a coherent answer and tried to run away, but was caught by the locals who beat her to death.

Two killed, five vehicles gutted in road inferno in Pune

Pune, August 27: Two persons were killed and five vehicles gutted in an inferno that flared after a gas tanker rammed into a stationary truck near Pune, police said on Thursday.

The mishap occurred on Wednesday night on Talegaon-Chakan Road, about 40 km from Pune, in front of a ‘dhaba’ (road side eatery) where the truck was parked after a punctured tyre, they said.

Housemaid ‘cleans out’ several houses, held

Mumbai, August 27: A 23-year-old housemaid who carried out several robberies in the western suburbs was arrested by the Goregaon police.

After collecting a huge sum, Neelam Verma went to seek blessings at the Vaishnodevi temple with her husband. She was arrested last week soon after she returned to the city to begin her spree.

HC rejects bail for VAT fraud

Mumbai, August 27: A bunch of companies used fake bills and invoices to claim refunds amounting to Rs28.72 crore under the Mahrashtra Value Added Tax Act from the state government.

The alleged mastermind behind this racket, one Kishankumar Gupta and his associate were on Wednesday denied anticipatory bail by the Bombay high court.

According to the Sales Tax department, Gupta claimed to be the director of KK Traders Pvt Ltd and 26 other companies which only existed on paper. Another accused named as a director of the various companies turned out t be working as a peon for Gupta.

Gas pipeline burst: Flat-owner recovering

Mumbai, August 27: Suman Marathe, 78, who sustained burn injuries in the gas pipeline burst incident in her flat at Dadar on Tuesday, is recuperating at Hinduja Hospital. Marathe’s son-in-law Vishwas Kanade said, “She is well and recovering. Doctors will examine her and her extent of wounds, on Thursday. During preliminary examination, doctors said that there are no deep injuries on her body.”

Marathe’s neighbour, 70-year-old Sureshrao Joijode, who had sustained hip-bone fracture and his wife Radhabhai, 65, who suffered injuries on her temple, are undergoing treatment at Hinduja Hospital.

Three youths held with arms, chilli powder in Khar

Mumbai, August 27: The Khar police on Tuesday claimed to have foiled a dacoity by arresting three armed persons. The accused are said to be involved in a murder case in Jamgad police station in Firozepur.

Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested Raju Ahmed Ali, 22, Guddu Ali, 19 and Sarafuddin Ali, 25 while they were loitering near the Harsh Jewellers on road no.3 in Khar (West). The police have seized two revolvers, three live cartridges, two choppers, red chilli powder and ropes from the accused.

Robbers targeting old women held

Mumbai, August 27: The Rafiq Ahmed Kidwai (RAK) Marg police have arrested four members of “Bol Bacchan Gang” who robbed old women of their ornaments on the road. The robbers mostly targeted those who walkedalone in the afternoon.

Naresh Jaiswal, 28, Mangesh Kardulkar, 35, Ashok Borghade, 32 and Shivnath Nayadu were arrested at Sewri on Sunday and gold ornaments worth at Rs1.8 lakh were recovered from them. All are residents of Vashi Naka in Chembur and Jaiwal is the gang leader.

Municipal council employee killed

Kapurthala, August 27: A local municipal council employee today allegedly beaten to death by a colleague and his five associates, police said.

Former Kapurthala Municipal Employees Union President Jaspal Singh (50), who was husband of district Congress Mahila President president Neelam Sidhu, was allegedly murdered by watchman and clerk of the municipal council.

Steel trader robbed of Rs.12 lakh in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, August 27: A steel trader was robbed of Rs.12 lakh in cash by four armed men here Wednesday, police said.

The incident occurred Wednesday evening in the Raj Nagar locality under Kavi Nagar police station in Ghaziabad.

“Sanjiv Kumar Gupta had just returned to his house and parked the car when three men came to him and at gunpoint robbed a briefcase containing Rs.12 lakh in cash, which was kept in the car boot,” a police officer said.

“The fourth man was on the motorcycle outside,” the police officer added.

4 killed, 3 injured in bio gas plant explosion

Aluva, August 26: Four persons were killed and three others injured after an explosion rocked the 2,000 square feet concrete tank of a bio gas plant at nearby Edathala today.

While two bodies were recovered soon after the explosion, police and fire force personnel had a tough time to retrieve the two other bodies. Three of the injured had been admitted to various hospitals here.
