Cash, jewellery worth Rs.60 lakh looted from businessman’s home

New Delhi, September 07: Burglars have looted cash and jewellery worth Rs.60 lakh from a businessman’s home in Samaipur Badli here, police said Monday.

According to police, when Mukesh Kumar Kashyap alongwith his family returned home around 4.30 p.m. Sunday after watching a film, he found it ransacked.

Police said the businessman was out of his sector 18 house in Rohini when burglars entered the house using duplicate keys and fled with Rs.30 lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs.30 lakh.

Police said the entry into the house was friendly as the locks were not broken but opened.

Eight held for excise official’s murder

Varanasi, September 07: Eight people have been arrested for the murder of a senior excise official in this Uttar Pradesh city last month, police said Monday.

Those held for the killing of Narvadeshwar Singh, additional commissioner of the central excise department, include two sharp shooters and two tobacco company owners.

Singh was shot dead in daylight in a busy market in Varanasi Aug 23 by four unidentified gunmen.

Man arrested for raping daughter for years

Bhubaneswar, September 07: A man in Orissa’s Bhadrak district has been arrested for allegedly raping his daughter for over a decade and forcing her to undergo several abortions over the years, police said Monday.
Bishnumohan Panda, a 58-year-old resident of Rajgurupur village, was arrested after his daughter complained to the police Saturday with the help of villagers, said Damodar Mohapatra, in charge of the police station in the village.

Maoist from Jharkhand arrested in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, September 07: A Maoist from Jharkhand was arrested after a gunfight in the forests of Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district, about 250 km from here, police said Monday.

Raj Mohan was nabbed Sunday evening in the dense Devgarh forests, while he was going to meet some of his aides to plan attacks in the districts of Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand, police alleged.

CBI Chargesheet against 23 for cheating bank

New Delhi, September 07: CBI has filed a chargesheet against 23 people, including four government officials, granting loans to non-existing companies through fake accounts and causing losses of more than Rs four crore to a nationalised bank.

The chargesheet filed against Chief Manager of a Canara Bank branch here and three other officials besides other persons in a special court sought their prosecution on the charges of cheating, criminal conspiracy and other sections of the IPC and various provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act.

Pakistan flag found in Muslim shrine, four held

Anand, September 07: Four people were detained after a Pakistani flag was found atop a tree in the premises of a Muslim shrine in Gujarat’s Anand district, police said Monday.

“We have detained four people, including a trustee of the shrine in Umreth town. They are being questioned as to how the Pakistani flag went unnoticed for the last two months as informed by the local residents,” a senior police official said.

“The state home department had been informed of the detention as the matter is sensitive. A Pakistani flag had been spotted for the first time in the region,” he said.

Woman kills self, children

Bhadohi, September 07: A woman in the district allegedly killed herself and her two children, police said today. The woman, a resident of Jharihat village, set herself ablaze along with her five-year-old daughter and two-year-old son when her husband had left for work this afternoon, police said.

On seeing smoke coming out from the house, the neighbours rushed there but by then all the three had died, police said. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, police added.

Forensic evidence tampered with in Aarushi case?

New Delhi, September 07: The mystery surrounding the sensational Aarushi Talwar murder case has deepened further with evidence suggesting that the 14-year-old girl’s vaginal swab sent to the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics was not the sample originally taken from her body.

According to an independent investigation conducted by the Zee News into the case, the vaginal swab sent to the Hyderabad-based forensic laboratory did not contain any traces of semen or white discharge, suggesting that the samples were not of Arushi and instead belonged to an unidentified woman.

Two engineering students abducted in Bhopal, one raped

Bhopal, September 07: Two women, who are students of an engineering college here, were abducted by a relative and his friends and one of them was raped, police said Monday.

The victims, who are cousins, are third year students of a private engineering college. Bunty Chauhan, a distant relative of theirs, offered to drop them home in his car Sunday but took them to a flat in Kolar locality instead and locked them up.

Bunty was accompanied by his friends Naman and Balli. When Bunty and Balli went out to buy food, Naman allegedly raped one of the women, a police official said.

Maoists kill five villagers in Ranchi district

Ranchi, September 07: Maoists have shot dead five villagers, including two students, at Pundigiri, about 60 kms from here, police said today.

A dozen armed Maoists went to the village last night and shot them dead, Deputy Inspector General of Police, RK Mullick said.

This is the second attack by the Maoists in the same area in the last 11 days, which, he said, reflected the frustration of the rebels.

On August 27, the Maoists had killed four villagers, including a little girl, at Bundu, near Pundigiri.

CPM worker’s body found, five partymen killed in past 24 hours

Lalgarh, September 07: Suspected Maoists killed yet another CPI(M) activist this morning at Keundi village under Salboni police station bordering Lalgarh.

As many as five CPI(M) activists have been killed by the ultras within the last 24 hours in West Midnapore district.

Superintendent of Police, West Midnapore district, M K Varma said Shyam Chalak, a local committee secretary of the party’s Salboni unit, was kidnapped last night from his house by suspected Maoists.

His bullet-ridden body was found in front of his house this morning.

Maoist leaflets were also found near his body.

Bomb blast kills three in Nepal

Kathmandu, September 07: Three people were killed and seven others injured Sunday in a bomb blast in western Nepal, a media report said.

The blast took place in Malakheti village in Dhangadhi area of Nepal’s western Kailali district, Nepalnews.com reported. Three of the injured were in serious condition at a hospital.

Chief district officer Shiv Prasad Nepal said the explosion occurred Sunday evening in the courtyard of the house of Harka Bahadur Mohta.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Attacked in Ahmednagar, US citizen dies of injuries in hospital

Pune, September 07: Sixty-one year old Eric Nadel, a US citizen, breathed his last on Sunday morning at 11.30 am after struggling for his life for 11 days. Eric and his wife Heather (59) — both followers of spiritual guru Avatar Meher Baba, had sustained severe head injuries after being brutally attacked by robbers in the early morning hours of August 26 at their isolated bungalow at Arangaon village, 9 km from Ahmednagar. The couple has been staying on the trust’s residential premises at Arangaon for 35 years. Heather is a trustee of the Avatar Meher Baba Trust in Meherabad.

Satyendra’s Singh killer apprehended

Patna, September 06: Destiny has its own way of scripting one’s fate. Take, for instance, the case of former MP and JD(U) leader Vijay Krishna. Arrested on Wednesday night from Faridabad in connection with the murder of party colleague and transporter Satyendra Singh in May this year, he would be lodged in the same high-security Beur jail which was inaugurated in his presence as the state’s junior building construction minister 15 years ago.

The jail was inaugurated by the then chief minister, Lalu Prasad, on August 11, 1994.

Two women killed in road mishap at Kota

Kota, September 06: Two women were killed when their two-wheeler bumped into a car here, police said today. “The women riding on a two-wheeler were on their way to a school where they worked when a car coming from opposite direction hit them,” the police said.

“They were rushed to a nearby hospital where one of them identified as Urmila (35) was declared brought dead while the other, Shashi (40), succumbed to her injuries later,” they said. “A case has been registered with the Udyog Nagar police station and an investigation into the matter is on,” they added.

Two bodies recovered in Leh under suspicious circumstances

Srinagar, September 06: Two unidentified bodies were recovered under suspicious circumstances at Leh in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said here today.

They said panic gripped Gamtaso and Polo Ground in Leh when the bodies were found by locals.

Police were immediately informed who took the bodies for identification, they said, adding the cause of their death was not known.

Police registered a case and started investigation.

Theft at President’s Estate; police say insider’s job

New Delhi, September 06: The office of President Pratibha Patil’s Officer on Special Duty was burgled in the high-security Rashtrapati Bhavan complex.

The office of Wing Commander Vikram Dutta, which is located in the health club of the Presidential Estate, was burgled on Wednesday and the thieves walked away with his computer, police officials said.

While a case was registered on September four, police officials believed that the job was that of an insider who has also walked away with six dumbbells from the health club.

Newly-wed sets herself ablaze

Muzaffarnagar (UP), September 06: A newly married woman today allegedly committed suicide over a family dispute in the district.

Anjali, who was married to Pravin two months ago, allegedly set herself ablaze at her house in Umarpur village, police said.

A family dispute was stated to be the cause behind her taking the extreme step. However, police have taken Pravin and his brother Sandip into custody.

The body of Anjali has been sent for postmortem.

Two Indian students in Oz charged with sexual assault

Melbourne, September 06: Two Indian students have been charged for allegedly sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl as she slept on a train from Melbourne.

Sukhjinder Singh, 22, and Amarjit Singh, 28, are accused of attacking the girl in her seat as the train travelled through southern New South Wales, police said adding that the two have been refused bail.

The girl woke up as the men began to restrain her about 3 am on Wednesday on the Melbourne to Sydney train.

Boy shot dead by friends during cricket match

Muzaffarnagar, September 06: A 16-year-old boy was today shot dead allegedly by his friends during a cricket match at a village in this district. Shamshad was allegedly shot dead by Salim, Azharuddin and Sarwar after a quarrel broke out between him and the three boys during a cricket match at village Gangero, Deputy Superintendent of Police Arvind Kumar Morya said.

Police have launched a manhunt to nab the three boys, who fled the spot

Two students killed in separate incidents

Jamshedpur, September 06: Two students were killed in separate incidents here last night, police said today.

The deceased were identified as Maneendra(13) and Neeraj(18). Maneendra died when he fell from the fourth floor of his flat while playing.

In another incident, Neeraj, a B Com student of Coperative College, met his fate when he was returning after taking his exam.

He met with an accident and his motorcycle hit the road-divider, killing him on the spot.

Six held in Orissa for poaching

Bhubaneswar, September 06: Six people were arrested for attempting to poach deer in Orissa’s Bhitarkanika national park, a forest official said Sunday.
The six were arrested from Charchia village near the park, P.K. Behera, a senior forest official, said.

Eight nylon traps, two nets and two boats were seized from them which they were using to trap and kill deer. The official said the arrested men were sent to jail Sunday after a court rejected their bail plea.

Man jailed for keeping an owl captive

Bhopal, September 06: A Madhya Pradesh court has sentenced a man to three years’ imprisonment for clipping the wings of an owl and keeping it captive in his house in Chhindwara district for three years.

Chief Judicial Magistrate of Chhindwara Sanjay Kumar Dwivedi sentenced Gendalal last week.

“Gendalal who kept the owl in a cage at his home has been sentenced for confining the bird which is illegal as per the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. A fine of Rs.10,000 has also been slapped on the accused who had clipped the bird’s wings,” a forest official said.

Teachers strip in Jharkhand

Ranchi, September 06: It was a Teachers’ Day of a very different kind. Thousands of them walked through the streets of Ranchi in pouring rain towards Jharkhand Raj Bhavan with a long list of grievances and begging bowls in their hands.

But what shocked everyone around was when about 300 of them started stripping to their bare essentials!

Police at Raj Bhavan immediately cordoned the area. The protesters, however, could not meet the governor. They left their charter of demands with an official.
