Disasters killed 750,000 people in southeast Asia

New Delhi, September 09: Over 750,000 people have been killed in natural disasters in southeast Asia between 1998 and 2009, health ministers of the region said Wednesday in a declaration.

At Kathmandu, the 27th health ministers’ meeting has been going on for the last three days and will conclude Thursday. Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and a team of health officials are representing India in the international meet.

Worker’s body found in varsity campus

Shillong, September 09: The body of a water pump operator at the North Eastern Hill University here was found from his quarter inside the varsity campus today.

Police said Reshta Dklar, 35, was found dead at his residence by his family members who came to see him this morning.

He had been living alone at the quarter and his family stays at the Mawlai area of Shillong.

A rope was found tied to the body and police suspect Reshta committed suicide.

Two Nepalese smugglers held, fake Indian currency seized

Motihari, September 09: Two Nepalese smugglers were arrested and counterfeit Indian currency with a face value of Rs 39,800 seized in East Champaran district along the Indo-Nepal border.

Acting on a tip-off, SSB jawans assisted by district armed police personnel arrested Aslam Azad (20) and Shyam Kumar Singh, hailing from Lipni village in Nepal and allegedly involved in running the fake currency on the Indian side, at at Raxual town yesterday, SSB Deputy Commandant Lokesh Kumar Singh said today.

36 teenage boys escape from juvenile home

New Delhi, September 09: Thirty six teenage boys fled from a juvenile home in Mukherjee Nagar area here Wednesday, police said.
“The incident took place around 5 in the morning at a ‘Bal Sudhar Grah’ (juvenile home) when a truck arrived to deliver milk. They attacked the security guard and fled from the place,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (northwest) N.S. Bundela told IANS.

“We are investigating and efforts are on to trace them,” Bundela said.

Building collapses in Faridabad, five trapped

Faridabad, September 09: Several people were injured and trapped when a three-storey building housing a shopping centre collapsed here Wednesday.

Police were frantically trying to take out people believed to be trapped under the debris of the building, witnesses and officials in this town neighbouring the national capital said. Several bleeding people were rushed to hospitals.

Five held for selling pirated Microsoft software

Bangalore, September 09: Five persons were arrested here for selling pirated CDs of Microsoft software and 712 CDs seized from them, police said today.

The original CDs of Microsoft software, which cost Rs 25,000 each, were being sold for Rs 1,000, they said.

The CDs were valued at Rs 7.5 lakh.

The five, who were arrested yesterday, were also selling duplicate DVDs and Mp3 CDs of Hindi, English, Tamil and Telugu films.

Encephalitis claims six more lives in eastern UP

Gorakhpur (UP) September 09: Six more children have died due to Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome, taking the toll in the viral fever in eastern Uttar Pradesh districts to 257.

The fresh deaths took place in Gorakhpur, Deoria, Kushinagar and Mahrajganj districts yesterday, health officials said today.

As many as 27 people suffering from the fever have been admitted to the BRD Medical College Hospital, Additional Director (health) L P Rawat said.

Army major, two militants killed in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, September 09: An Indian Army major and two militants were killed in fighting near the border with Pakistan in the mountainous Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said Wednesday.

The army sources said that a group of militants were trying to sneak into the Indian side in the Sonagali area of Poonch district Tuesday night, some 220 km northwest of Jammu.

A gunbattle started when the security forces challenged the infiltrators after spotting them. One army major and two militants were killed in the fighting.

Fake currency found from bush

Agartala, September 08: Fake currency with the face value of Rs five lakh was seized from Shovapur village in West Tripura district, bordering Bangladesh, police said today.

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of Assam Rifles and Tripura police raided the village yesterday and found the counterfeit notes in the denomination of Rs 500 from a bush, the sources said.

Two persons were arrested in this connection.

Three students injured in NEHU campus clash

Shillong, September 08: Three students were injured in a clash among the students at the campus of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), prompting the authorities to initiate a meeting of students to diffuse tension.

An official of NEHU said the clash broke out after an Assamese student of B Tech department hailing from Namrup was allegedly beaten up by the students of Law department this afternoon.

Two of his friends were also injured. It was learnt that a love affair was behind the clash, officials said.

The injured were admitted at NEHU clinic.

Three naxalites arrested after encounter in Ranchi

Ranchi, September 08: Three Naxalites of the Jharkhand Prastuti Committee (JPC), a breakaway group of the CPI (Maoist), have been arrested after an encounter at Churugarha, about 70 KM from Ranchi, the police said today.

“One of the three arrested Naxalites, identified as Raj Kumar Ganju, is a big catch for the police,” Senior Superintendent of Police, Praveen Kumar, said here.

Ganju was allegedly involved in a number of cases.

The police reached the spot after getting a tip-off that a group of JPC members had assembled at Churugarha to plot a crime last night.

Six Sri Lankans arrested for travelling on fake visa

Hyderabad, September 08: Seven persons including six Sri Lankan nationals were arrested at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Shamshabad here today on charges of travelling on fake visas, a senior Immigration Officer said.

A group of six Sri Lankan Tamilians including one woman, led by an Indian were detained by the Immigration Intelligence Officials when they were about to board an Emirates flight to Paris this morning, the officer said.

Two of the arrested Sri Lankan Tamilians hail from Jaffna and others from different parts of Sri Lanka, he said.

Three children charred to death, mother serious

Kanpur, September 08: Three children were charred to death, while their mother sustained major burn injuries, after the house was engulfed by flames under mysterious circumstances, police said today.

According to a police spokesperson, a woman identified as Meena was alone in house with her three kids, when neighbours saw smoke coming from there and informed the police.

The woman along with her children were evacuated from the house and admitted to a hospital, where the children died, while she was in critical shape.

Notorious thief and his accomplice held

Kochi, September 08: A notorious inter-state thief and his accomplice, allegedly involved in the theft of cash, gold ornaments and mobile phones from different places in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, have been arrested.

Nazir (47), and Shanavaz (35) who helped Nazir to sell the stolen articles, were arrested from the city last night and a portion of the stolen items were recovered from them, a senior police official told reporters here.

Nazir, who had four wives and booked in over 50 cases, had undergone imprisonment for nearly 17 years in various jails in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, he said.

Maoists withdraw Pashupati stir, to hold ‘peaceful protests’

Kathmandu, September 08: Apparently under pressure following the outcry over their assault on two Indian priests, the Maoists have withdrawn their ongoing agitation in the Pashupatinath temple but will stage “peaceful protests”.

The Maoists’ agitation for installing local priests in Pashupatinath took a violent turn on Friday when a group of 40-50 cadres stormed the temple and severely thrashed two Indian priests, also tearing their clothes and sacred threads.

Father of man killed in Ishrat encounter seeks CBI probe

Ahmedabad, September 08: Father of one of the persons killed in “encounter” in 2004 along with Ishrat Jahan and two others, today filed a petition in Gujarat High Court seeking CBI inquiry into his son’s death, a day after an enquiry concluded that police had killed them in cold blood.

Justice H N Devani, hearing the petition filed by Gopinath Pillai, father of Javed Gulam Mohammad Shiekh alias Pranesh Kumar Pillai, adjourned the matter for tomorrow.

Fight over T-Shirt costs a college student his life

Morigaon, September 08: A fight over a T-shirt cost a college student his life when his classmate allegedly set him on fire in Kamrup district of Assam, police has said here.

Nitumoni Das and his classmate Prafulla Das, both first year students of Dimoria college, had an altercation over the T-shirt in their hostel last night, police said.

Prafulla in a fit of rage poured kerosene on Nitumoni and set him on fire, police said.

Three students rushed to the rescue of Nitumoni. The victim who was critically injured was rushed to Gauhati Medical College Hospital.

Couple kidnap 3-month-old baby

Indore, September 08: A three-month-old baby was kidnapped by an unidentified couple in commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh. Scheme number 134-resident Manu Singh was at her shanty when a couple came to her last evening and took her son.

The duo showered loveon the infant and wanted to purchase biscuit and milk for him from the nearby shop.

Later, they fled away with the child.

After waiting for a considerable time, Manu understood the situation and filed a complaint against the couple. Her husband had gone out to earn livelihood at that time.

Two get life imprisonment for killing eyewitness

Muzaffarnagar, September 08: A local court today sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for killing an eyewitness in 2005.

Additional District Sessions Judge R C Diwakar held the two accused – Gohar and Jalha – guilty under section 302 of the IPC and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on each of them.

According to the prosecution, Ahmad Mukhtar, an eyewitness and complainant of the murder of his two brothers, was shot dead in Kheri Kuresh village on December 20, 2005.

Major fire destroys over 100 houses

Itanagar, September 08: Over 100 houses were gutted in an major fire that broke out in a densely populated locality West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, police said today.

Though there was no report of any casualty, property was destroyed in the blaze in Nigam Basti area yesterday, Superintendent of Police Tusar Taba said.

He said around 200 cattle perished in the fire that broke out at 12 noon and spread rapidly.

Fire engines were rushed from district headquarters at Aalo to douse the flames, he said adding that cause of the fire is yet to be known.

Teacher accused of watching obscene clips in classroom

Lucknow, September 08: A teacher in a government-run school in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district has been accused of allegedly watching obscene clippings on his mobile phone in class and showing pornographic pictures to primary students, officials said on Tuesday.

Shiv Kumar, a teacher with the a primary school in Bulandshahr, will face action officials added.

“Parents of the primary school students on Monday registered a complaint against the teacher,” in charge of primary education in the district, Ramesh Chandra Verma told IANS.

18 killed, 23 injured as bus falls into gorge in J&K

Srinagar, September 08: Eighteen people were on Monday killed and 23 others injured, nine of them seriously, when a bus rolled down into a deep gorge on Jammu-Doda-Batote highway at Assar, 145 kms from Jammu.

The bus, which was on its way from Doda to Jammu, fell into the gorge on the banks of river Chenab when the newly constructed road caved in, police said.

Eighteen persons have died and 23 injured, 9 of them critical, they said, adding that injured have been shifted to district hospital in Doda.

5-year-old girl stripped in Jaipur school

New Delhi, September 08: A five-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly stripped and beaten up as a punishment for her indiscipline by the teachers in front of her schoolmates in Jaipur on Monday.

Terrorised and traumatised, Raksha Kumari (name changed), narrated the story of horror that she was subjected to. The girl said a madam stripped her and a sir beat her up. She was made to stand in front of the entire class and was hit.

Three killed in Lalgarh violence

Kolkata, September 08: There has been an upsurge of fresh violence in the Lalgarh area of West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district since Sunday night as three persons, including a Communist Party of India (Marxist) functionary , were killed and their houses ransacked by suspected Maoists.

With these killings, five persons have been killed in the region since Saturday.

4 arrested for hoisting Pak flag over dargah

Anand (Gujarat), September 08: Four persons have been arrested for allegedly hoisting a Pakistani flag over a shrine in Umreth town of the district in Gujarat here on Monday.

Two Pakistani flags were seen tied to a neem tree above a ‘dargah’ by locals, who informed the police.

According to police, a complaint has been filed against five persons including two ‘trustees’ and three workers of the shrine for promoting enmity between different groups under IPC 153A.
