Two killed, five injured in road accidents in J-K

Srinagar, September 10: Two persons were killed and five others injured in separate road accidents in Kashmir valley today, a police spokesman said.

Mohammad Sultan Ganie, a resident of Pampore, was killed when his car collided with a truck at Karnabal-Samboora, 16 kms from here, on Srinagar-Jammu National highway.

In another incident, a woman identified as Sundri was killed when she was hit by a car near JVC Hospital at Bemina here, the spokesman said.

A child was injured after a cab hit him, outside his house at Bohipora in Kupwara, he said.

Highly decomposed body fished out

Srinagar, September 10: A highly decomposed body of a woman, who went missing for over eight months was fished out from a river in Leh district of frontier Ladakh region today, a police spokesman said.

The body of Chuskit Dolma, wife of Stanzin Chuknes, was recovered from Indus river near Lhardo in Leh, 434 kilometres from here, the spokesman said adding that Dolma was missing since January 31.

A case was registered after the recovery of the body and investigations are on to ascertain the cause of her death, the spokesman said.

Twenty-year-old youth hangs himself at Varanasi

Varanasi, September 10: A 21-year-old youth allegedly hanged himself to death from a tree at Izari village in Jaunpur district, 60 kilometres from here last evening.

According to police, the deceased has been identified as Chandrashekhar of Izari village in Jaunpur district and the reasons for him taking extreme step was not yet known.

The youth worked at a barber shop in Varanasi district, police said adding that an FIR has been registered and his body has been sent for a autopsy.

Investigations in the matter is going on.

Girl crushed to death at Varanasi, police man at Mirzapur

Varanasi, September 10: A young girl was crushed to death in a road mishap, at Sindhaura Bazar here, while a policeman was killed in nearby Ahraura area in Mirzapur district in another road accident.

Police sources said that a youth was coming to Varanasi from Jaunpur with a young college girl on a motorcycle today, when his bike was hit by a truck coming from the opposite side resulting in the death of the girl on the spot.

The youth escaped unhurt in the accident and surprisingly after the accident fled off from the spot on his bike.

Grenade found in Bandipora mosque, neutralised

Srinagar, September 10: A major tragedy was averted today with the timely detection of a live grenade inside the compound of a mosque in Bandipora district in North Kashmir, a police spokesman said.

A live hand grenade was found in the compound of Jamia Masjid Qadeem at Ajas, 40 kms from here, shortly before mid-day prayers, the spokesman said.

Police was immediately informed, and subsequently the explosive device was neutralised by the bomb disposal squad, he said.

Girl students hold protest

Rewari, September 10: Agitating girl students of DAV Mahila College, Kosli held a dharna and blocked traffic on the Rewari-Kosli road for the second day today and also clashed with police, which opened fire in air to disperse them.

A number of youngsters as well as women of surrounding villages also joined the agitating girl students today.

The girls were demanding transfer of college principal Rita Sehgal, in addition to take over of the college by the state government, refund of “exorbitant” tuition fee charged from them and elimination of arbitrary imposition of hefty fines.

Cotton farmer commits suicide in Krishna district

Machilipatnam, September 10: A debt-ridden farmer committed suicide by consuming pesticides at Jayanthi Village of Verrulapadu Mandal of Krishna District today, police said.

The farmer, E Basivireddy, had one acre land of his own and had taken two acres of land on lease where he cultivated cotton crop.

However, the crop was damaged due to bad weather conditions. He had borrowed money from a bank and some other sources . But unable to bear the loss, he took the extreme step and committed suicide by consuming pesticides in his land, police said.

PDP chief Mehbooba suffers minor injuries in road accident

Jammu, September 10: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti was injured when her car overturned on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway Thursday evening, police here said.

Mehbooba was travelling towards Jammu in her bullet-proof Ambassador car after addressing a series of meetings in the Doda district when the vehicle skidded off the road and rolled down into a ditch – four to five feet below the road level.

Five girls killed, 34 injured in school stampede

New Delhi, September 10: Five girl students were killed and at least 34 other students were injured Thursday morning in a stampede in a school here after rumours that electric current had leaked into waterlogged classrooms, police said. Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal described the tragedy as a shame.

The incident took place in the Government Senior Secondary School (Class 6-12) in Khajoori Khas in northeast Delhi around 9 a.m. The victims were mostly from Classes 7-10, who had come to the school in pouring rain for their half-yearly examinations.

CBI questions Buta Singh in graft case involving son

New Delhi, September 10: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Thursday questioned former union minister and National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) chairman Buta Singh in connection with a graft case involving his son Sarabjot Singh, an official said.

“A two-member CBI team questioned Buta Singh at his (Lok Nayak Bhavan) Delhi office,” CBI spokesman Harsh Bhal told IANS.

Bhal said the “detailed questioning began at 11 a.m”.

But the spokesman refused to divulge details. “This is part of the investigation and nothing more can be said.”

Muthoot murder: Judicial custody for two co-travellers

Thiruvananthapuram, September 10: Two alleged criminals who travelled with Kerala’s Muthoot business group scion Paul M. George the night he was murdered were Thursday sent to two weeks of judicial custody by a court here.

Judge K.K. Sujatha of the Vanchiyoor Additional Assistant Sub-court sent Om Prakash and P. Rajesh to two weeks of judicial custody but said they could move a bail application Monday.

Maoists blast tracks, abduct five railway employees in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, September 10: Maoist guerrillas blew up railway tracks and triggered blasts at several places in Sundergarh district of Orissa and also abducted five railway employees, police said Thursday.

Around 20 Maoists abducted five railway employees, including the station master, from the Topadiha station in the district early Thursday, said Diptesh Pattnaik, the superintendent of police of Rourkela.

The rebels also blew up the Rourkela-Barasua railway track and damaged another rail track at Roxy.

MIG 21 crashes in Punjab, pilot killed

Muktsar, September 10: A MIG 21 fighter aircraft of IAF today crashed in Muktsar district of Punjab, killing the pilot.

The war plane was on a routine sortie and had taken off from Bhatinda airbase, Muktsar Deputy Commissioner Rajat Aggarwal told PTI over phone.

The crash occurred Bhaliana village on Muktsar-Bhatinda road, about 20 kms from here, killing the pilot, Lt Manu Akhori on the spot, he said.

Senior officials of IAF, police and from the Muktsar civil administration have rushed to the spot.

One killed in US plane collission

Washington, September 10: A Chinese learner pilot has been killed during a training flight in the United States after two small planes collided in the western state of Arizona.

The Chinese student, whose identity has not been disclosed, was flying a single-engine Cessna plane along with a colleague around urban areas in Phoenix, Arizona on Wednesday when a second small plane hit the aircraft from the rear and sent it rolling onto a dirt field.

Killed 5 Girls In School Stampede

New Delhi, September 10: At least five students were killed and 27 injured in a stampede at a public school in East Delhi on Thursday, reports TV
said.

The stampede occurred after the students were asked to leave the classroom after rumors of electrocution in rain water accumulated on the school grounds after heavy rains in the national capital.

Police to file chargesheet against filmmaker Prakash Jha

Patna, September 10: Filmmaker Prakash Jha seems headed for trouble with police in Bihar ordering a chargesheet to be filed against him for allegedly distributing money among voters during the April-May Lok Sabha elections that he contested, police said Thursday.

West Champaran Superintendent of Police K.S. Anupam said Jha was found guilty of violating the model code of conduct during the Lok Sabha elections that he contested as a Lok Janshakti Party candidate from West Champaran seat.

Doctor arrested demanding sexual favours from nurse

Jaipur, September 10: A medical officer was arrested by the state Anti Corruption Bureau for allegedly demanding sexual favours from a nurse in lieu of verifying her pending medical bills in Rajasthan’s Udaipur district, an official said here today.

“Dr Subir Moitra, posted as Medical Officer at Primary Health Centre Udaipur, had asked a nurse posted at sub-primary health centre for sexual favours as a bribe when she visited him to verify her medical bills amounting Rs 38,000,” the official said.

Five students killed, 30 injured in Delhi school stampede

New Delhi, September 10: Five girl students were killed and at least 30 others injured Thursday in a stampede in a flooded government senior secondary school in the capital. The stampede was sparked by rumours that electric current had leaked into the water that had flooded the school, police said.

The injured students have been admitted to the Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) Hospital where the condition five is stated to be serious.

The incident took place in a government-run school in Khajuri Khas in northeast Delhi in the morning.

Manipur rocked by another ‘fake encounter’ that kills 6

Imphal, September 10: The Manipur government is once again mired in a blazing row over the killing of six suspected militants by security forces. Family members of the dead and rights groups claim it was a “fake encounter” and that the six were innocent civilians.

Six people – two on a motorcycle and four others in a vehicle – were killed late Tuesday near Awang Khunou village in Imphal West district.

Maoists blast rail tracks, govt buildings in Orissa

Rourkela, September 10: Maoists triggered about a dozen explosions in the wee hours today, blowing up railway tracks and at least four government buildings in Orissa’s Sundargarh district.

The Maoists have called for a 24-hour shut-down in the district today to demand release of 30 people, who were arrested on the suspicion that were naxalites.

The rebels blasted railway tracks at around seven places between Bimlagarh and Patangi, police said.

Rs 10 lakh stolen from realtor’s house

Hyderabad, September 09: An amount of Rs 10 lakh was stolen from the house of a realtor at Venkat Ramana Colony near Punjagutta on Monday.

Srinivas Rao had recently sold his flat at Nizampet to a man named Narasimha Rao for Rs 10 lakh. Punjagutta police said Srinivas Rao on Monday withdrew Rs 10 lakh, that was deposited at the Lakdikapul HDFC Bank. He brought the money to his residence on Monday and kept it in an iron safe before going out for shopping with him family.

When they got back home, the door was open and the cash was missing.

15 killed, nine injured in attacks in Iraq

Baghdad, September 09: At least 15 people, including three policemen, were killed and nine injured in separate bomb attacks in Iraq Wednesday, according to witnesses and security sources.

Seven people were killed and two injured, from the same family, when a car bomb went off in Kirkuk, witnesses said. A woman and a child were among the dead. The car exploded while it was parked in the house’s garage in al-Orouba district.

Earlier Wednesday, two policemen were killed and another three were injured when a bomb targeting their patrol exploded on the Kirkuk-Daquq road.

New CBI team to probe Aarushi murder case

New Delhi, September 09: After failing to make any breakthrough in the sensational Aarushi-Hemraj murder case, the CBI has reconstituted its team of officials to go into the double murder.

The new team will be headed by SP, CBI Neelabh Krishna while joint director Lucknow Javed Ahmed and special director S C Sinha have been given supervisory roles. Other members of the team will be chosen on the recommendation of Ahmed and Sinha, CBI spokesperson said here today.

Ishrat encounter: Gujarat HC stays Tamang report

Ahmedabad, September 09: The Gujarat High Court on Wednesday stayed metropolitan magistrate S P Tamang’s report which had described as fake the police encounter in which alleged terror group operative Ishrat Jahan and three others were killed.

Acting on a a Gujarat government petition seeking a stay on the report, Justice Kalpesh Javheri said the observations made in the report were beyond the jurisdiction of the judicial magistrate.

Justice Javheri also ordered the appropriate authority of the high court to look into the actions of magistrate Tamang and take necessary action.
