Four killed, several injured in Srinagar blast, police blame LeT

Srinagar, September 12: Two policemen and a woman bystander were killed when suspected militants of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) blew up a car-borne bomb near a police bus here Saturday evening, police said.

A senior police officer said there was evidence suggesting LeT operative Rahman masterminded the blast.

Another police officer said guerrillas targeted the passing vehicle which was returning after dropping a group of inmates inside the high-security central Jail in Kathidarwaza locality of Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital.

Rs.950,000 stolen from car in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, September 12: Rs.9.5 lakh (Rs.950,000) was stolen here Saturday from the car of a steel trader who is the son of a former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator, police said.

The incident occurred Saturday afternoon in Loha Mandi under Kavi Nagar police station of Ghaziabad.

Bhagwan Gupta, a steel trader from Aligarh, drove to Ghaziabad Saturday afternoon to make some payments to other traders with whom he was doing business. He was carrying Rs.10 lakh in a bag which was kept in the car, police said.

“The bus had dropped the inmates minutes before and was returning when it got caught up in the explosion,” said the police officer.

A 13-year-old girl raped by neighbour

New Delhi, September 12: A 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a neighbour in Kanjhawala here Friday night, police said Saturday.
Rajesh alias Raja, a BA student, was arrested after the medical examination of the victim, who studies in class 8 in a government school.

Police said the girl had gone out to answer nature’s call when the accused raped her.

14 deer die mysteriously in Kanpur zoo

Kanpur, September 12: Panic prevailed at the zoo following the mysterious death of 13 spotted and one swamp deer Saturday. There was neither any sign of injury nor could the post-mortem carried out by a team of expert vets reveal the cause of death.

Uttar Pradesh’s chief wildlife conservator B.K. Patnaik who rushed to Kanpur to personally take stock of the situation, was at a loss to explain the probable cause of death.

Ruling out food poisoning, Patnaik said: “The same feed was consumed by 260 animals and none of the others displayed any adverse signs.”

Two arrested for murder, car-theft

Kanpur, September 12: Two persons were arrested here for allegedly killing two drivers of a travel agency and fleeing with the cars, police said today. Narendra Singh Chauhan and Upendra Chandra were arrested by Special Operations Group and a car was recovered from them, Superintendent of Police O P Singh said.

Police recovered two country made pistols and some cartridges from them. “The duo booked two vehicles from a travel agency in Lucknow a few days back.

Woman burnt alive for dowry, FIR against in-laws

Pratapgarh, September 12: A case has been registered against six people, including the husband, for setting afire a woman for dowry in Kandhai area of the district.

The FIR was lodged with the Kandhai police last evening on the directions of Superintendent of Police Mohit Agarwal, police said today. As per the allegations, Rekha, who was wedded to Raj Kumar of Ranjitpur Pisniya village was burnt alive for dowry on August 30, 2002.

She had succumbed later in the hospital.

Former BCCI president Dungarpur dies

Mumbai, September 12: Former Indian cricket board president Raj Singh Dungarpur died here Saturday after a prolonged illness. He was 74.
Hailed from the royal family of Dungarpur in Rajasthan, he was the youngest son of Lakshman Singhji, the erstwhile ruler of Dungarpur.

Dungarpur, who served two terms as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was also suffering from Alzheimer disease. He was also the president of the Cricket club of India (CCI) for more than 13 years.

Three labourers killed in road accident

Sultanpur, September 12: Three labourers were today killed and another was seriously injured as a tractor-trolley in which they were travelling was hit by a train at an unmanned railway crossing here. The labourers working in a brick kiln were killed as their vehicle was hit by the Sadbhavna Express train near Matha Bhusanda village, police said, adding the victims were on their way to Sultanpur from Lucknow.

Sikh man shot dead in Toronto

Toronto, September 12: A young Sikh man was shot dead early Friday morning in the Indian-dominated city of Brampton on the outskirts of Toronto.

The local police, who responded to an emergency call, said 33-year-old Devinder Singh Gill was found injured after being shot at about 4.20 a.m. He was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police didn’t clarify whether the house where Gill was found shot belonged to him.

No one has been arrested yet. Police also found no weapon at the crime scene.

‘Two million children die in violence every year’

Lucknow, September 12: At least two million children die every year on account of violence in the world, while nearly 40 million suffer disabilities, an orthopaedic surgeon said at an event organised by the Unicef here Friday.

Bhasker Banerji, an orthopeadic surgeon and director of Allahabad-based Viklang Kendra, said that around 520,000 people die each year as a result of interpersonal violence alone, of which 40 percent are children.

Journalist arrested on rape charges

Kolkata, September 11: A journalist was today arrested alongwith another man for allegedly raping a woman, police said.

S N M Abdi, working with the South China Morning Post, was arrested along with one of his friend Saiful Islam for allegedly raping the woman at his New Alipore residence last night, police said.

The 29-year-old woman in a complaint alleged that Abdi asked her to visit him at his residence for a job interview but when she went to his house, he along with Saiful raped her.

Abdi was arrested from his residence based on the FIR lodged by the woman, they added.

Another ‘fake’ encounter in Manipur

Imphal, September 11: With the uproar over the killing of a youth in an alleged fake encounter in July yet to die down, a local committee has called a strike over the killing of another person in a “similar” encounter in Manipur.

A 24-hour general strike beginning midnight tonight has been called by the All Manipur Rickshaw Drivers’ Pullers Association to protest the killing of a driver, Md Rehaman alias Tomba, by police commandos and securitymen in an alleged fake encounter on Tuesday.

Nithari accused Pandher’s family thrilled with acquittal

New Delhi, September 11: Justice had prevailed with the Allahabad High Court’s acquittal of Noida businessman Moninder Singh Pandher in the rape and murder of a teenage girl, the family and lawyer of the key accused in the sensational Nithari killings said here Friday.

“I am very happy. Finally, justice has prevailed. An innocent man has been acquitted,” said Pandher’s son Karandeep Pandher.

Allahabad HC acquits MS Pandher in Nithari murder case

Allahabad, September 11: In a major development the Allahabad High Court on Friday acquitted businessman Moninder Singh Pandher in the rape and murder of a 14-year-old teenager Rimpa Haldhar, who was one of the children strangled at his Nithari residence.

The Allahabad High Court observed that there was no substantial evidence to prove Pandher’s criminal involvement in the case.

However, the Allahabad High Court upheld the death sentence awarded to his domestic help Surinder Koli.

Thai woman detained for smuggling cocaine capsules in stomach

Kuala Lumpur, September 11: Malaysian police have detained a Thai woman for allegedly trying to smuggle capsules filled with cocaine valued at 600,000 ringgit (171,430 dollars), news reports said Friday.

The suspect, who was detained with a Filipino man Tuesday night at a budget hotel, was thought to be on her way to Bangkok, the New Straits Times daily reported.

The woman had come from Brazil where she was forced to swallow the cocaine by a Nigerian man, Kuala Lumpur narcotics chief Kang Chez Chiang said.

“She entered Malaysia via Singapore,” Kang said.

Court rejects TN plea for withdrawal of case against Jaya

Bangalore, September 10: A special court here today dismissed an application filed by the Tamil Nadu government seeking permission to withdraw the London Hotel case, one of the many disproportionate assets cases filed against former chief minister Jayalalithaa.

Pronouncing the order, Judge Malliakarjunaiah observed that since the state government filed the case stating that it was in the public interest, it cannot be allowed to withdraw it now.

Police bust passport racket in Delhi

New Delhi, September 10: Delhi Police have arrested five people for their alleged involvement in a passport racket, officials said Thursday.
The accused used to prepare passports under ‘Tatkal’ scheme by using forged letterheads of army officers and forged verification by army officers, police said.

“Various incriminating documents used for getting passports under the ‘Tatkal’ scheme have been recovered,” said a senior police officer.

ULFA militant gets lifer for killing two Assam cops

Guwahati, September 10: A court in Assam Thursday awarded life imprisonment to a militant of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) on charges of killing two policemen on duty 16 years ago.
The court found ULFA rebel Ronkur Dutta guilty of killing the two policemen in November 1993 in Lakhimpur district in eastern Assam.

“After a lengthy trial, the designated court in Guwahati awarded life imprisonment to Ronkur Dutta and slapped a fine of Rs.2,000 on him for killing the two policemen,” government counsel Pradip Gogoi said after the verdict.

5 vehicles impounded for violation of code

Eight sentenced to 10 years RI for murdering youth

Banaskantha, September 10: Eight persons were sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment by a local court here today for murdering a youth two years ago.

Additional sessions judge V D Charan hearing the case, sentenced Amthabhai Bhutka and seven others, to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for murder of one Ramesh Patel (24) in Salla village some 18 km from here.

According to case details, Ramesh had eloped with Amthabhai’s daughter, both from the Salla village, in August 2007 to get married.

Criminal carrying reward shot dead

Varanasi, September 10: A hard core criminal wanted in over three dozen criminal cases including murder and attempt to murder was shot dead by a joint team of police and SOG in eastern UP’s Jaunpur district, 60 kilometres from here, last night.

IG Varanasi, Gurudarshan Singh said that Dharmendra Gaur alias Manish Tiwari was shot dead in an encounter with the Special Operation Group and police on the outskirts of the Jaunpur city last night and was carrying a cash reward of Rs 10,000. However, his aide managed to escape.

Ganja worth Rs 89 lakh seized

Motihari, September 10: In one of the biggest hauls custom sleuths seized contraband ganja worth Rs 89 lakh from a truck at a check post in Raxual town in Bihar’s East Champaran district, official sources said today.

Acting on a tip-off, the Customs officials searched the truck and seized the contraband yesterday, sources said.

The driver and helper of the vehicle were arrested, they said.

WB flood: six dead, food packets airdropped

Kolkata, September 10: With three more deaths today, the toll due to floods in West Bengal has risen to six, while an Air Force helicopter airdropped food packets in the worst-hit areas in Hooghly district as part of the state government’s relief measures.

Reviewing the situation at a meeting with Food and Supply Minister Paresh adhikari and senior officials of the departments concerned, Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta told reporters that the Air Force had helped the state government airdrop food packets at the worst-affected Khanakool and its adjacent areas in Hooghly district.
