Six killed in road accident in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, September 15: Six people were killed when a newsprint-laden truck rammed into a tourist bus in Balasore district of Orissa, an official said Tuesday.

The truck ran over the six passengers who were buying food after parking the bus on the roadside late Monday. The vehicle also rammed into the bus near Miringimundi village of Balasore, about 200 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.

‘The truck rammed into the passengers and the bus. Six people died on the spot,’ senior district administration official Ramesh Chandra Rout told IANS.

7 members of family found dead in Haryana village

Rohtak, September 15: Seven members of a family, including four children, were today found dead under mysterious circumstances here, police said. The incident took place at Kabool Pur village of the district.

A teenaged girl of the family has been admitted to the hospital for symptoms of suspected poisoning , they added. Police said the cause of the deaths is being ascertained and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

Congress demands CBI probe into Muthoot murder case

Thiruvananthapuram, September 14: The Congress Monday demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the murder of Muthoot business group scion Paul M. George.

State Congress president Ramesh Chennithala said the probe into the murder has been “bungled completely” and people have lost faith in Kerala Police.

Delhi lawyer jailed for month for not vacating rented house

New Delhi, Sep 14 (IANS) The Delhi High court Monday sentenced a lawyer to one month in jail for not complying with its earlier order to vacate his rented apartment.

A division bench of Justice B.N. Chaturvedi and Justice G.S. Sistani held P.C. Srivastava guilty of contempt of court and also fined him Rs.2,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in 10 days of additional imprisonment.

Srivastava had taken a house on rent from Lalit Madan but did not vacate the premises on the expiry of their rent agreement.

Marauding hyena found dead on outskirts of Ranchi

Ranchi, September 14:A hyena which had created terror in villages around the Jharkhand capital, biting around 15 people in the last week, was found dead Sunday night, forest officials said Monday.

The hyena’s carcass was found from Hapadag forest on the outskirts of Ranchi Sunday night, the officials said, adding it had succumbed to injuries it suffered when the villagers attacked it.

Villagers in the area sighed with relief while many shouted “lakadbagga mar gaya (the hyena is dead)”. Some of the villagers Monday offered sweets to god Hanuman to celebrate.

Punjab to act against illegal water connections

Chandigarh, September 14:People having illegal water connections in Punjab’s rural areas could soon find their supply drying up.

The Punjab water supply and sanitation department Monday warned people to immediately remove illegal water connections or be prepared to face legal action, as well as disconnection of supply.

The deadline to get the water supply connections legalised has been set for Oct 31 this year.

Kashmiri Pandits ‘in exile’ tonsure heads in Delhi

New Delhi, September 14: A group of Kashmiri Pandits living in Delhi tonsured their heads Monday to mark this day 20 years ago when a member of their community was shot dead by militants in Jammu and Kashmir triggering their exodus from the valley.

“On Sep 14, 1989, militants killed a Kashmiri Pandit in the heart of Srinagar. This sowed the seeds of our eviction from our homeland. This is a symbolic protest against injustice towards our community,” Kamal Hak, a Kashmiri Pandit living in Delhi, told IANS.

Teachers cut hair of Class 5 students for bunking classes

Lucknow, September 14: Two teachers of a private school in Uttar Pradesh forcibly cut the hair of four Class 5 students after catching them bunking classes, an official said Monday.

The teachers cut the hair of four students of Spring Field School in Manjhanpur town of Kaushambhi district, about 300-km from state capital Lucknow, Saturday.

‘Even as the incident took place Saturday, we came to know about it today (Monday) from local journalists. We have ordered an inquiry into the matter,’ official in-charge of primary education in the district B.P. Singh told IANS.

Class I student kidnapped in Patna

Patna, September 14: Unidentified gunmen kidnapped a class I student in the heart of Patna city on Monday morning.

According to police, eight-year-old Shreyas Shrivastav was going to school along with 11 others in an auto-rickshaw. When the vehicle reached near Maurya Hotel, three motorcycle-borne men stopped the auto-rickshaw and took away Shreyas at gunpoint.

It looked like a well planned kidnapping as the criminals kept tabs on Shreyas’s movement all through. They knew when they should strike, the police said.

70-yr-old cheat in cop net again

Mumbai, September 14: Arvind Mehta, a qualified chartered accountant, was 18 when he started conning people by issuing fake cheques. After seven arrests and three convictions, the 70-year-old is behind bars once again.

Personnel from the Worli police station arrested Mehta last week for allegedly issuing a fake cheque to a jewellery store in Worli. Preliminary investigations revealed that Mehta has at least 50 criminal cases registered against him.

Child survives 12-storey fall after landing on motorcyclist

Taipei, September 14: A three-year-old Taiwan boy survived a fall from the 12th floor after landing on a motorcyclist, a newspaper said Monday.

According to the China Times, the incident occurred in Sanhsia Township outside Taipei Saturday evening.

Lin Tzu-chun, 25, parked his motorbike beside an apartment building about 8 p.m. Saturday to buy milk from a department store.

After making the purchase, he started the motorbike to go home when the falling boy hit Lin’s left shoulder and the motorbike before landing on the pavement.

Four killed in Lucknow accident

Lucknow, September 13: Four people were killed and six critically injured when a sports utility vehicle (SUV) jumped over the road divider and hit a car near here Sunday evening, police said.

The accident took place barely two kilometres from the Amausi airport on the Lucknow-Kanpur national highway, halting the traffic on the busy road for about an hour.

1 killed by suspected Maoists in West Bengal

Kolkata, September 13: One man was shot dead and another injured by suspected Maoist rebels Sunday evening in West Bengal’s trouble-hit Binpur region, police said.

A group of 15 people shot Nazrul Hassan, 28, at Andharia Bazar in Maoist-affected West Midnapore district, police said.

“One person was killed and another seriously injured in that attack. Hassan died on the spot but his companion, Bapi Pratihar, was admitted to the Jhargram sub-divisional hospital with two bullet injuries,” West Midnapore district superintendent M.K. Verma told IANS.

CBI to file 2nd chargesheet in Satyam case

New Delhi, September 13: The CBI will soon file a second chargesheet against former disgraced Chairman of Satyam Computer B Ramalinga Raju as it claimed to have unearthed more financial frauds like siphoning off money from the company, which may have caused loss to the shareholders.

Sources in the CBI said that Raju’s confessional statement after the scam came to light earlier this year was an attempt by him to divulge only what he wanted to, while keeping other alleged financial frauds under wraps.

Two children killed in explosion in scrap shop

Panchkula, September 13: Two children were killed in a blast in a scrap dealer”s shop in the district today. The blast took place when the children were trying to extract copper from a bomb in the shop here, Panchkula Superintendent of Police Amitabh Dhillon said.

He said two children died on the spot while three others received serious injuries and have been hospitalised.

Patna, September 13: Eleven men have been arrested for their involvement in setting a train on fire in Bihar last month following an altercation between students and railway personnel, police said Sunday.

The 11 were arrested after they were identified through video clippings provided by television news channels as being part of the group that torched the Shramjivi Express Aug 18 following a row with Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, said Deputy Inspector General (Railway Police) Arvind Pandey.

Teenager married off to 75-year-old Bangladesh moneylender

Dhaka, September 13: Unable to repay a loan taken after cyclone Aila hit his village, a man has been ‘coerced’ into marrying off his 13-year-old daughter to a 75-year-old moneylender in Barisal, southern Bangladesh.

The marriage between Akhinur, 13, and 75-year-old moneylender Lokman Sikder was solemnised Sep 4, as the teenager’s father Azhar Bepari could not return Tk 4,000 ($ 58) he had borrowed in May this year.

Lady doctor assaulted

Saharsa, September 13: Agitated over the death of a woman, her husband and angry relatives today assaulted a lady doctor charging her with “negligence” at a government hospital in this district headquarter town here, police said.

Ruby Devi (35), who was admitted to the hospital with labour pain last evening, delivered a baby early this morning.

But after some time, she died of excessive bleeding.

After getting the death news, Ujjawal Jha, husband of the deceased and her other relatives, flew into a rage, charged the doctor with “negligence” and assaulted her, the police said.

Building collapses in Central Delhi

New Delhi, September 13: A two-storey building caved in this morning at Bapa Nagar in Central Delhi.

However, nobody was injured in the mishap. The building was already in a state of dilapidation and had received notice from the authorities.

According to police, at around 0630 hrs, Lajpat, owner of the house was sleeping at the roof of his two-storey house when suddenly he heard the noise of something crushing. He immediately rushed to the ground floor and alerted other members of the family, including his son, daughter-in-law and their four-month-old child.

Two engineering college students killed in mishap

Erode, September 13: Two final year engineering students were killed on the spot when the motorbike they were riding collided with a car near Pallipallyam, eight km from here, police said.

Dineshkumar (22) and his friend Ponnar Shankar (22), doing their B. Tech final year course in a private engineering College near Tiruchengodu had come here last evening and were returning to the college when the mishap occured.

Metro train derails in east Delhi; passengers unhurt

New Delhi, September 13: In the second such mishap to hit the Delhi Metro in a month, a train derailed near the Yamuna Bridge in east Delhi apparently due to problems on track, causing tense moments for 14 passengers on board and prompting the DMRC to order a probe and suspend a junior engineer.

Two wheels of the train’s front coach jumped tracks at 6:02 am, just seconds after it started from the Yamuna Bank station, DMRC Spokesman Anuj Dayal said.

None of the passengers were injured.

Constable throw teen out of running train

Patna, September 13: A constable of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) who threw a 14-year-old boy out of a running train in Bihar was sent to jail Sunday, police said.

Constable Rameshwar Prasad threw Mohammed Shahabuddin out of the running train near Kudhani railway station on the Muzaffarpur-Hajipur section Thursday after he refused to pay Rs 10 as bribe.

“Prasad was sent to jail Sunday,” a police officer said.

Prasad was arrested by the police Saturday after he was identified by Shahabuddin during a test identification parade.

16 die in rain-related incidents in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, September 13: Sixteen persons died in rain related incidents in Uttar Pradesh where several rivers have crossed the danger mark inundating low-lying areas as rains continued to lash the norther region, including the national capital, affecting normal life.

The incessant rains also resulted into decline in temperature in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh where some areas near Rohtang Pass and high mountain peaks received snowfall since Friday night.
