Two held for molesting Australian woman in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, September 26:Two men were arrested Saturday for allegedly molesting a 37-year-old Australian woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district, police said.

The incident took place Saturday in the Collectorganj locality in Kanpur when the woman with her husband was going to meet their friends in the locality, police added.

“Saleem and Naushad – both in their early 20s – misbehaved with the woman and also assaulted her husband while the couple, sitting on a pedal-rickshaw, were on their way to their friend’s house,” inspector Mahendra Kumar told IANS over phone.

Maoists gun down Chhattisgarh MP’s son

Raipur, September 26: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Baliram Kashyap’s two sons were shot by suspected Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar district Saturday, killing one of them, police said.

“Maoists fired several rounds at Kashyap’s sons, Dinesh and Tansen, when they were at a temple performing Mahashtami Durga Puja in their ancestral village Gharguda in Bastar district,” a top police official told IANS.

The site of the attack lies 300 km south of here.

Naxals shoot Chhattisgarh MP’s son to death

Raipur, September 26: A day after union home minister P Chidambaram’s visit to Chhattisgarh, the suspected naxalites shot dead son of Bastar’s Lok Sabha member Baliram Kashyap near Bhairaguda temple at Jagdalpur in Bastar around 300 km south of Raipur on Saturday.

In the daring attack another son of the MP was seriously injured. Tansen Kashyap (33) who was president of Bastar Janpad Panchayat, went to the temple to perform puja along with his two brothers Dinesh and Kedar when the rebels fired from very close range.

Two Dalit youth killed, three injured while jogging

Sangrur, September 26: Two Dalit youth were killed while three others were injured when they were run over by an unidentified vehicle while jogging early this morning on Sangrur-Barnala National Highway about 10 km from here.

The group of five Dalit youth of Bahadurpur village was on their routine jogging exercise when hit by the speeding vehicle, killing two of them identified as Jaswinder Singh, 17 and Manpreet, 19, on the spot. Surjit Singh, 18, was seriously injured and has been referred to Rajinder hospital, Patiala.

Chhattisgarh MP’s son shot dead by Maoists

Raipur, September 26: Suspected Maoists in Chhattisgarh Saturday shot two sons of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Bastar MP Baliram Kashyap, killing one of them, police said.

“Maoists fired several rounds at Kashyap’s sons, Dinesh and Tansen, when they were at a Mahashthami Durga Puja celebration in Bastar district,” a top police official told IANS.

The incident took place in a temple in Bhanpuri area of Bastar, some 300 km south of here.

Dalit woman raped at gun-point

Muzaffarnagar, September 26: A Dalit woman was allegedly raped by two youths in the district at gun-point, police said today. The victim (27), who is a ”shikshamitra (non-regular teacher)” in a school in Kayampur village, said in her complaint that she was raped at gun-point yesterday while she was on her way to the institute.

The incident took place near Chamau village, 25 km from here. The woman is a resident of the same village.

Boy thrown out of running train

Muzaffarnagar, September 26: A 12-year-old boy was thrown out of a running train allegedly by some unidentified persons in the district here, police said.

The boy identified as Makim Ahmad, who was travelling with his mother, picked up a quarrel with some persons, who in a fit of rage threw him out from the running train near Balwa railway station yesterday, they said.

Ahmad was later found unconscious near the railway tracks and rushed to a hospital at Shamli.

Former minister’s son gets seven-months imprisonment

Faridkot, September 26: A local court here has convicted and sentenced to seven months imprisonment jail to the Managing Director of Cooperative Bank in Bathinda and his driver in a five-year-old assault case.

The Court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate J S Kang yesterday awarded the sentence to Gurpreet Singh, son of former Punjab Irrigation Minister Sikander Singh Maluka, and his driver Mewa Singh.

A case was registered against Gurpreet Singh, his mother Surjit Kaur and Mewa Singh for assaulting Jagsir Singh, a resident of Maluka village.

Three killed, dozen injured in road accident

Barabanki, September 26: Three persons were today killed and a dozen injured when a tempo in which they were travelling collided with a bus near Pathari village here. The incident occurred when the tempo was hit by a state roadways bus on its way to Azamgarh this morning, Superintendent of Police Alok Singh said.

Two children hacked to death, mother injured

Pratapgarh (UP), September 26: Two children were hacked to death and their mother was seriously injured by unidentified persons in Hathigawan area following which angry locals blocked the Allahabad-Lucknow highway demanding arrest of the culprits, police said here.

Sakshi (7) and Prince (3) were hacked to death and their mother Kiran (30) was seriously injured at their residence by unidentified persons in Phoolmati village, about 60 kms from here, last night, they said.

Kiran was rushed to district hospital, from where she was referred to Allahabad Medical College, police said.

Fake Indian currency detected in Delhi bank

New Delhi, September 25: Fake Indian currency nominally worth Rs.700,000 was detected at a Citi Bank branch in the national capital, police said Friday.

Citi Bank’s Connaught Place branch manager G.S. Sawhney informed police after his staff detected the counterfeit notes a few days ago. Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to police, the fake currency notes were deposited in the bank during the first five months of the year through cash deposit boxes in ATMs.

Balco chimney crash toll rises to 40, several workers trapped

Raipur, September 25: The bodies of 40 workers, all badly disfigured, were recovered till evening from under the debris of a collapsed chimney at the Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd (Balco) plant in Chhattisgarh as rescuers continued to search for survivors on the third day Friday. Authorities fear several more are still trapped in the debris.

District authorities at Korba, about 250 km north of state capital Raipur, said 40 bodies were pulled out and the casualty figure could rise further once the wreckage of the under-construction chimney at the 1,200 MW coal-fired power plant was cleared.

Missing brothers found murdered in fields

Punjab, September 25: The bodies of two minor children, missing since Thursday evening, were found in the paddy fields in this Punjab district, police said. Both had apparently been strangled.

According to the police, Aman (11) and his brother Om (7) had left their home Thursday evening for tuition. When they did not return home till late, their parents registered a missing complaint with the local police and feared the two had been kidnapped.

Nine killed in West Bengal road accident

Kolkata, September 25: At least nine people were killed and several others injured Friday when a speeding truck collided with a stationery mini-van in West Bengal’s South 24-Parganas district, police said.
“Nine people were killed in the road accident near Diamond Harbour area. The truck was coming from Burdwan district to Patharpratima when it met with the accident early Friday,” said a police official of South 24-Parganas district.

He said the truck was ferrying labourers returning to their respective villages on Durga Puja vacation.

Businessman’s house burgled of cash, jewellery worth Rs.8 mn

New Delhi, September 25: A businessman who runs several schools in the national capital region has reported cash and jewellery worth millions of rupees was stolen from his central Delhi house while the family was out, police said Friday.

Sudhir Giri, who runs the chain of Giri International Schools in Delhi as well as in its suburbs, reported that he and his wife had gone to visit their relatives Thursday morning and when they returned after a few hours, they found the doors of the first floor residence in West Patel Nagar ajar and the house ransacked.

Illegal arms factory unearthed, one arrested

Bijnor (UP), September 25: Police today claimed to have unearthed an illegal arms factory and arrested a person in village Bhoganwala here.

According to police, the arrested Zakir had been manufacturing illegal arms in his house and supplying them to anti-socials.

Several fire arms, including three guns and two pistols, were recovered from the place.

B Tech student commits suicide

Lucknow, September 25: A 20-year-old B Tech student of the local Integral University allegedly committed suicide yesterday at her residence by hanging herself.

Circle Officer, Aliganj Shalabh Mathur said that the girl had eloped with one of her cousins in May, but was later apprehended and since then, she had been upset as her family did not approve the relationship.

The girl’s father, Suresh Chandra Yadav works as a senior accountant in the postal department.

34 bodies retrieved, dozens still trapped under crashed Balco chimney

Raipur, September 25: Rescuers had retrieved the bodies of 34 workers till Friday noon from the Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd (Balco) plant in Chhattisgarh and were struggling to remove the debris of a 100-metre chimney that crashed two days ago. Police fear dozens are still trapped underneath.

Explain how girl died at govt shelter, says HC

Mumbai, September 25: The Bombay high court on Thursday asked the state government to explain how a 10-year-old tribal girl died allegedly due to weakness and lack of blood in a state-run ashramshala in Dahanu Taluka.

On September 7, the court had directed the state government to stop serving poor quality foodgrains to tribal children in ashramshalas across the state.

The court had taken suo motu cognisance of the deaths of five children between September 2007 and October 2007 in the government-run ashram schools in Dahanu, Thane district.

Multi-crore scam unearthed

Mumbai, September 25: The Mumbai unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) un-earthed a major multi-crore export scam and seized Rs66 lakh cash from the official residence of a senior customs superintendent in follow-up raids on Thursday.

DRI sources told DNA that the agency was investigating a widespread scam of bogus export of fabrics and textiles, when it stumbled upon the active involvement of certain senior customs officials working with the export wing of the Nhava Sheva Customs.
