Black-money: SC issues notice to Centre

New Delhi, September 29: The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Centre on a plea seeking disclosure of certain vital documents in connection with the issue of black-money stashed in foreign banks.

The apex court sought the response from the government on allegations by eminent jurist Ram Jethmalani and others that authorities were withholding vital documents relating to the case.

New Delhi, September 29: Honor student beaten to death video surfaces. People have been reacting angrily to surfacing of a video showing a sixteen year student being beaten to death by three other youngsters. It was reported that Derrion Albert was on his way to Fenger High School in Chicago.

Two CRPF men killed in Sopore attack

Srinagar, September 29: Two paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed and a woman bystander injured in a guerrilla hit-and-run attack in north Kashmir’s Sopore town Tuesday, police said.

Police said a group of CRPF men were busy shopping near Sopore bus stand when militants fired at them from close range, killing two personnel and injuring the woman.

The area has been cordoned off and search is on to nab the militants, a police official said.

Police uses force against student visa applicants in Jalandhar

Jalandhar, September 29: Police had to be use force to control hundreds of boys and girls seeking student visas for Britain outside the Visa Facilitation Service (VFS) centre in this Punjab city on Tuesday, as the aspirants tried to beat the Oct 1 deadline when new and stricter visa guidelines come into effect.

The Punjab police, which were called out to control hundreds of visa applicants and relatives accompanying them, resorted to cane charge and pushing the applicants away several times to control entry into the VFS centre.

26 drown, 40 missing as two boats capsize in Bihar

Khagaria (Bihar), September 29: At least 26 people, mostly minors and women, were drowned and 50 others missing after two boats carrying Durga Puja revellers capsized in the swollen Bagmati and Kamala Balan rivers in Bihar, police said today.

Eighteen people drowned and 45-50 others were missing after an overcrowded country boat, carrying over 100 people, sank in the Bagmati river near Fultora ghat in Khagaria last evening, Superintendent of Police, Indranand Mishra said. The passengers were returning after a Vijaya Dashami fair.

Mob sets bus on fire in Delhi

New Delhi, September 29: The Delhi Police on Tuesday resorted to lathicharge to control a mob that set a bus afire while seeking higher compensation to the families of students killed in the stampede at the Khajuri Khas government girl’s school earlier this month.

The protests, which turned violent, took place this morning near the school when it reopened in northeast Delhi.

Seeking Rs 5 lakh as compensation per casualty, agitated locals pelted stones at vehicles passing by and set a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus on fire.

11 bodies found, 14 missing after boat capsizes in Bihar

Patna, September 29: Bodies of 11 persons, who drowned after an overcrowded country boat capsized at Baghmati in Bihar’s Khagaria district have been fished out, even as 14 others were yet to be traced, police said on Tuesday.

The bodies of 11 persons, including seven minor girls and two women have been recovered, Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Neelmani said.

The ADGP said the National Disaster Response Force personnel have been pressed into service to locate the bodies, he said.

20 school children injured in Delhi bus accident

New Delhi, September 29: At least 20 children were injured Tuesday when their school bus toppled after a collision with a private chartered bus in south Delhi, police said.

The accident took place around 7.45 a.m near a traffic intersection of R.K. Puram. The bus was carrying over 30 students of G.D. Goenka School.

The injured have been rushed to the AIIMS trauma centre.

Seven dead, 40 missing as boat capsizes in Bihar

Patna, September 29: At least seven people were killed and over 40 were missing after a boat carrying over 60 people capsized in the Bagmati river in Bihar’s Khagaria district, an official said Tuesday.

The accident took place Monday evening when villagers were returning from a fair to mark the conclusion of Durga Puja in Khagaria, about 200 km from here. The boat with a capacity of 30, was carrying over 60 villagers, mainly women and children.

Agra engineer in critical condition after being shot

New Delhi, September 29: A junior engineer of the Agra Development Authority (ADA) was shot by three unidentified assailants in his house and is in critical condition at a private nursing home here, police said Tuesday.

The incident occurred Monday night.

B.L. Sharma was shot by three people on a motorcycle who came to his home. He was rushed to hospital after a domestic help informed the neighbours, a police official said.

Sharma’s family was in Lucknow when the incident took place.

Girl, 18, raped on university campus

London, September 29: Students at a university are being warned to keep their windows and doors locked last night after a teenager was raped.

A round-the-clock police presence has also been introduced at the University of Glamorgan in South Wales after an 18-year-old woman was attacked at a halls of residence. She is said to be recovering at home with her family.

In the meantime, detectives are now searching for the culprit who wore gloves and a dark-coloured hooded top during the incident in the early hours of Saturday.

Man cuts off his tongue to appease Goddess in city

Ahmedabad, September 28: A man has cut-off the tip of his tongue and offered it to appease Goddess Amba in a temple in Meghaninagar area of the city, police said today.

The incident took place yesterday, where 35-year-old Ranveer Singh Baghel, a staunch devotee of Goddess Amba cut off the tip off his tongue and offered it at a temple, they said.

“It was the Goddess who wanted me to offer her my tongue and so I did it, nothing will happen to me,” Baghel, who migrated to the city from Madhya Pradesh 20 years ago told PTI.

Five die in boat capsize, 12 others missing

Khagaria, September 28: Five people died and at least 12 others were missing when an overcrowded country boat capsized in Baghmati in Bihar’s Khagaria district this evening, SP Indranand Mishra said.

Eye-witnesses, however, put the death toll at 15.

At least 42 persons were returning from a fair on the occasion of Vijaya Dashami in the boat when it was suddenly caught in gusty wind and torrential rain in the midstream and toppled.

Five bodies were recovered from the spot, while around 25 persons swam to safety. Twelve others were reported to be missing.

Unlicenced guns recoveered

Erode, September 28: Eight persons were taken into custody for posessing guns without licence at two places in the district today, police said.

The guns were found with them by a patrolling police team at Karukkampalayam and Thudupathy areas.

It was suspected that they used the guns for hunting, police said.

minor crack delays trains

Kozhikode, September 28: A minor crack was noticed on the railway track between Mahe and Vatakara stations in the Palakkad division of Southern Railway.

Trains which were halted following noticing of the crack resumed their journey after clearing the track after 30 minutes, railway sources said.

Teenaged boy drowns during Durga idol immersion

New Delhi, September 28: Durga Puja festivities for a family in northwest Delhi came to a tragic end Monday when their 17-year-old boy drowned while immersing an idol of Goddess Durga.

The victim, identified as Arvind, was a resident of Nangloi.

The boy was immersing the idol in the Yamuna river in Timarpur when he drowned.

“We received a frantic call at 1.05 p.m. that the boy had drowned at the immersion site. His body was retrieved at around 4 p.m.,” a police officer told.

Banged up, Stanford back in jail after altercation

Boston, September 28: Allen Stanford, the alleged mastermind of a $7 billion fraud, is back in his jail cell after suffering a mild concussion, broken nose and two black eyes in a prison brawl last week, his lawyer said on Monday.

Stanford, 59, was injured in a fight on Thursday with a fellow inmate at the Joe Corley Detention Facility in Conroe, Texas, and was hospitalized over the weekend.

Acid thrown on Goa transport minister’s car

Panaji, September 28: Even as the stir against the allegedly fraudulent implementation of high security number plates (HSNP) gathers steam in Goa, unknown people threw acid on the state transport minister’s official car Sunday damaging the number plate.

Transport Minister Sudin Dhavalikar was not in his car when the incident occurred.

Three held for crude bomb blast in Orissa’s Kandhamal

Bhubaneswar, September 28: Three people were detained in Orissa’s Kandhamal district for their alleged role in a crude bomb blast Sunday, police said Monday.

A man was killed and two people sustained injuries when the bomb they were carrying exploded in Nandagiri village, 56 km from the district headquarters of Phulbani.

“We have detained three people for questioning,” a senior district police official told IANS, adding that the people have been detained after police found four illegally manufactured guns near the site.

Marginal impact of Air India pilots’ stir in Bangalore

Bangalore, September 28: The agitation by a section of pilots of the national carrier Air India had a marginal impact in India’s tech hub Monday, as only three out of 18 flights it operates daily were cancelled, an airline official said.

“Flights to Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata were cancelled as the aircraft did not land from these cities till afternoon,” Air India spokesperson V. Chandrashekar told IANS.

Passengers of the cancelled flights were accommodated in the aircraft of private carriers like Jet Airways and Kingfisher.

Armed robbers loot passengers in Delhi-bound train

New Delhi, September 28: A group of five-six armed robbers looted passengers on a train headed to Delhi of cash, jewellery and other valuables in the suburbs of the national capital Monday. Police said they had found “definitive” clues and would arrest the robbers soon.

The masked robbers boarded the Kalka-Delhi Himalayan Queen Express at Sonepat in Haryana and looted passengers in the general class bogie of cash, jewellery and valuables like mobile phones at gun and knife point.

India to use Facebook, Twitter to curb road accidents

New Delhi, September 28: Social networking sites Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and even blogs will be made use of by the Indian government to spread the message of safe driving, transport officials said Monday.

“For generating mass awareness about road safety, apart from using traditional media tools, modern web-based social networking tools will be used to spread knowledge of road safety,” K.K. Kapila, vice chairman of the International Road Federation (IRF), said in a statement.

Contractor shot dead in Ghaziabad after parking dispute

Ghaziabad, September 28: A contractor was shot dead and a municipal employee critically injured in Ghaziabad late Sunday night after three men, one of whom is an army soldier, opened fire at them following a dispute over parking of vehicles, police said Monday.

The contractor, Prashant Chaudhary, was supervising the cleaning of Ambedkar road for the Dussehra festival and the work was being undertaken by municipal sweepers.
