17 die as Cambodian ferry capsizes

Phnom Penh, October 11: At least 17 people, including 14 women, died when an overloaded ferry capsized in Cambodia’s Kratie province, an official said Sunday.

Local official Nhim Vanda said the accident took place late Saturday and the bodies were found Sunday. Kratie province is over 300 km northeast of Phnom Penh.

Murder sparks protests

Kolkata, October 11: A businessman was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne men in West Bengal’s Howrah district Sunday, triggering protests on a busy road, police said.

The killing took place on the Howrah-Andul road when the assailants fired at the victim at his shop, West Bengal Inspector General (Law and Order) Surajit Kar Purakayastha said. Angry people then blocked the road.

Medical student’s murder due to love rivalry, say police

Raipur, October 10: The sensational murder of a medical student in this Chhattisgarh capital Friday night was possibly due to rivalry in love and clues indicate the murderer was a friend of the victim, police said Saturday.
Pratik Sonwani, a post-graduate student at the government medical college, was shot down Friday midnight in an upscale residential area here.

Professor alleges sexual assault

Lucknow, October 10: Police today registered a criminal case against a director and two teachers of a private college in Uttar Pradesh on charges of sexually assaulting a woman professor.

The professor, who heads the management department of the college in Mathura district, about 300 km from Lucknow, alleged that the director sexually molested her and even tried to rape her along with two other teachers, police said.

Hizb terrorist killed in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, october 10: A Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander was killed in a gun battle with security forces in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir Saturday, police said.

Junaid alias Liaqat Ali was shot dead in Kastigarh area of Doda, about 200 km north-east of Jammu.

‘The militant had taken refuge in a house. When he was asked to surrender, he opened fire and was killed in retaliatory fire,’ Doda Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhat Singh told IANS.

Killer mothers murder twin girls in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, October 10: A woman along with her mother killed her 15-day-old twin girls in a Tamil Nadu hospital. Both women have been arrested, police said Friday.

Revathi, the wife of an auto-rickshaw driver Duraipandi, gave birth to twin girls at the Tuticorin Government Hospital Sep 24 when she was eight months pregnant. As the babies were premature they were kept in an incubator and given to Revathi for nursing.

Worried about raising them, Revathi and her mother, Thennila, allegedly killed the babies Thursday morning when the twins were given to them for nursing.

Three infiltrators killed in Kashmir

Srinagar, October 10: Three intruding guerrillas were killed Saturday along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district, police here said.

‘The alert troops of the army spotted a group of heavily armed infiltrators in Gurez sector of LoC. The intruding terrorists were challenged to surrender but they opened fire at the troops, triggering an encounter in which three terrorists have been killed,’ a senior police officer told IANS.

The searches are still going on in the area, even though officials claimed that the infiltration bid had been foiled.

Undertrial gives cops the slip at hospital

Hyderabad, October 10: An undertrial prisoner, who was being treated at the Gandhi General Hospital, gave the slip to his escort police and walked off a free man on Friday morning.

According to police, Nagaraju (25), was arrested by the Madhapur police for cheating innocent people by posing as a doctor and an actor and usurping money from them on the pretext of providing them with jobs. He was remanded to judicial custody and was lodged at the Cherlapally Central Prison as an undertrial.

Cricketer among two shot dead in Meerut

Meerut, October 10: Cricketer Gagandeep Singh was among two persons shot dead by an assailant in the city, police said on Saturday.

The incident occurred around 11:30 pm on Friday night when Mr. Singh along with his friend was standing outside a shop selling ‘kebabs’ here.

Police said a man got out of the car and demanded that he be served kebabs. When the shopkeeper Shahnawaz asked him to wait, he started abusing him.

Another man whose face was covered then came out of the same car and started firing in which 18-year-old Singh and the shopkeeper were killed, police said.

Mother drowned her daughter ‘out of fear’

London, October 10: A woman who drowned her four-year-old daughter was ordered to be detained indefinitely at a secure hospital yesterday. Laura Fletcher, 23, drowned Chloe in a bath of cold water before attempting to kill herself, Liverpool Crown Court was told.

Fletcher, of Wallasey, Merseyside, having failed to hang herself, spent two days in the house with her dead child before calling the police from a public call box. Fletcher, who was suffering a serious mental illness, admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility last month.

SBI’s branch manager abducted in Jharkhand

Garwah (Jharkhand), October 10: The branch manager of a nationalised bank has been abducted by unidentified persons in Garhwa district, police said today.

Vijay Kumar Sharma, the manager of State Bank of India’s Ramna branch, was returning home from Ramna on a motorcycle when he was abducted last evening.

Pillion rider Satish Kumar, the bank’s marketing officer, managed to escape from the clutches of the kidnappers.

Police have launched raids to trace Sharma.

Child rapist gets prison

New Delhi, October 10: Resisting awarding the extreme penalty of death to a 28-year-old man who raped and assaulted a child 30 times before killing the minor, the Supreme Court ordered on Friday that the accusedbe imprisoned till death.

Upholding the death sentence given by a trial court in Kerala and the high court, a bench of justices Harjit Singh Bedi and JM Panchal rejected the convict’s plea to convert the death sentence to life imprisonment that normally ends in 14 years.

Man commits suicide after killing elderly

Mumbai, October 10: After allegedly murdering a 60-year-old woman, her 22-year-old assailant, fearing arrest, committed suicide by jumping before a speeding local train about 10 days after the crime.

Maalti Mahadik, the senior citizen, was found murdered at her residence in Sai Baba Rahiwasi Sangh at Vakola pipeline in Santa Cruz (East) on September 17. Gold jewellery worth Rs64,000 was missing from her house. The youth, identified as Nilesh Khake, was Mahadik’s neighbour.

Chennai, October 09: A local court Friday granted bail to the news editor of Tamil daily Dinamalar, B. Lenin, arrested Wednesday for permitting the publication of a news item that hurt the sentiments of some female actors. Journalists in the state have now demanded action against the actors for defaming them.

The chief metropolitan magistrate granted Lenin unconditional bail after hearing his bail plea.

Man robbed of Rs 100,000 near a west Delhi bank

New Delhi, October 09: Three motorcycle-borne assailants Friday robbed a man of Rs.100,000 in cash which he had just withdrawn from a bank in Rajouri Garden area of west Delhi, police said.

“We received a call at around 1:30 p.m. about the incident. The victim, Girish Singh, told us that he had hardly walked a few hundred metres after withdrawing Rs.100,000 from a private bank when three persons attacked him,” a senior police officer said.

NRI arrested for exploiting 20 girls with marriage dreams

Ahmedabad, October 09: Shrenik Pundit, a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) from Sydney tried to do what Yogesh Patel did in the Priyanka Chopra-starrer What’s Your Rashi, but with a different intention. Pundit, father of a daughter, met around 20 girls in the state, promised to marry them and allegedly indulged in sexual activities. He was arrested by the city crime branch on Wednesday evening.

In his recent trip to India, Pundit even married a girl in a temple and met many other girls in hotels. Pundit, who works as mechanical engineer in Sydney, promised the girls a lavish lifestyle there.

Maoist rebels kill 17 police in central India

Mumbai, october 09: Security forces were searching forests in central India on Friday after suspected Maoist rebels ambushed a patrol team, killing at least 17 policemen, a top official said.

A patrol team of 40 policemen was conducting a security drill Thursday in Gadchiroli, in northeast Maharashtra state, when the rebels attacked, said Johny Joseph, state’s chief secretary.

About 300 rebels surrounded the patrol team, opening fire and leaving at least 17 dead before fleeing into neighboring Chattisgarh state, he said.

Sikh woman, three kids found dead in Canadian city

Toronto, October 09: A young Sikh woman and three children were found dead under mysterious circumstances inside their apartment in Calgary city, police said Thursday.

Calgary in Alberta province has the third largest concentration of the Punjabi community in Canada.

In a statement, Calgary police said they were called to a home in the northeast part of the city Monday following reports of a dead woman.

They found the body of 27-year-old Harsimrat Kahlon and three newborns inside the apartment. It is unknown whether they were her kids.

18 policemen killed in shootout with Naxals

Gadhiroli, October 08: In a brazen attack, Naxals on Thursday ambushed a police patrol party mercilessly gunning down eighteen policemen here, a day after Union Home Minister P Chidambaram gave a stern warning to the left-wing extremists to abjure violence or face action.

The policemen including a sub-inspector on patrol duty walked into an ambush set up by about 150-200 Naxals under the Laheri police station of the district, bordering Chhattisgarh, and were shot dead in an encounter that lasted over three hours.

Rs.7.5 cr-worth spurious ghee seized in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal, October 08: Spurious ‘ghee’ (clarified butter) worth Rs.7.5 crore was sized from Shajapur district in Madhya Pradesh, officials said Thursday.

A joint team of the district administration and state’s food and civil supplies department raided Manorama Food Products in Maksi industrial area Tuesday evening and seized 177 tonnes of ghee, mustard oil and edible oil.

Shajapur Sub-Divisional Magistrate Dinesh Chandra Singhi said: “The raid conducted at Manorama Food Product lasted for two days and 18 samples of ghee seized from the unit have been sent to a laboratory for tests.”

Graduate raped at job interview

New Delhi, October 08: Police today claimed to have arrested a person for allegedly raping a 28-year-old girl in the Mahipalpur area here, a day after a teacher was gangraped in west Delhi.

”Ramesh Verma(35), a resident of Vasant Kunj, had lured the victim for a job and asked her to come to his office in Rangpuri in Mahipalpur for an interview,” a senior police official told UNI.

He informed, ”When she reached Verma’s office around 12 noon on October 5, during the interview, he offered her refreshments after consuming which she fell unconscious,” the official said.

Policeman shoots colleague in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, October 08: A constable allegedly opened fire at a police station and shot dead his colleague in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh, police said today. The incident took place last evening after constable N Laxman of Bhadrakali police station was upset over some issue and opened fire from his AK-47 rifle.

When constable Mahesh Kumar Dhruv tried to stop him, Laxman shot him, Bijapur Superintendent of Police Avinash Mohanti told PTI by phone. Dhruv later succumbed to the bullet injuries, he said.

19 nabbed for massacre of 16 people in Bihar

Patna, October 08: Nineteen people have been arrested for the massacre last week of 16 people, including five children, in Bihar’s Khagaria district, police said Thursday.

While 12 people had been arrested earlier, seven more were nabbed between Wednesday and Thursday morning. Among those arrested and being interrogated for the Oct 2 killings in Khagaria’s Amausi village, about 200 km from here, is the alleged mastermind O.P. Mahto.

“More arrests will be made soon,” said Additional Director General of Police (headquarters) Neelmani.

Husband dumps wife after selling her kidney

Kerala, October 08: For 23-year-old Manju it was a dream marriage come true. But her love affair with her husband Binu, 30, came to an ugly end when he dumped her after selling her kidney and married another woman.

Now Manju, who lives near here, is minus one kidney and has a child.

Speaking to IANS Thursday, Manju said she first met Binu in 2004 and slowly they became close. They then eloped to Coimbatore that year and stayed there for a few months.

‘Then we returned to Kottayam and stayed there at my friend’s home,’ Manju said.
