Naga couple accuse Delhi Police of harassment

New Delhi, October 13: A few days after Delhi police was accused of beating up an American scribe, a couple from Nagaland has alleged that officers did not entertain their complaint against a group of rowdies for 20 hours.

Shimray Yangya and his wife were allegedly abused by a group of drunken men in south Delhi’s Safdarjung enclave on Saturday. First, the culprits made lewd comments about the couple. Later, they deflated Yangya’s car tyres.

Woman beaten to death with cricket bat

New Delhi, October 13: A 50-year-old woman was bludgeoned to death with her son’s cricket bat during a robbery attempt by unidentified men at her residence in East Delhi this evening, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Rita Taneja, wife of a transporter Gulshan Taneja, and the incident came to light when their son returned to their Jagatpuri residence from college at around 8 pm, a senior police official said.

“The son immediately informed police who rushed to the spot and found the woman lying in a pool of blood.

Driver fights thief, gets back passenger’s chain

Mumbai, October 13: A 24-year old auorickshaw driver from Ghatkopar chased and nabbed a chain snatcher who was fleeing after the snatching a gold chain of a woman travelling in his autorickshaw.

ON Sunday, Suhasini Ambokar, a resident of Saki Naka, boarded the autorickshaw at Ghatkopar station to go towards Vila Parle.

When the autorickshaw reached LBS road, suddenly a person came running towards the autorickshaw and within fraction of seconds snatched Ambokar’s gold chain and fled in a narrow lane.

Aircraft with six onboard missing near Corsica

Paris, October 12: A light aircraft with six people onboard went missing near the Corsica island off France, officials said Monday.

The nationalities of the missing people were not immediately known, the French Air Force said.

The Cessna 210 plane reported an engine failure to the control tower in Aix in Provence region after takeoff from Corsica, an air force spokesman said.

The jet asked for an emergency landing on the water of Gulf Porto near Corsica, however, no landing was detected by the air force or by the control tower.

Maoists step up attacks in West Bengal, Jharkhand

Kolkata, October 12: Maoist guerrillas Monday struck in a major way in Jharkhand and West Bengal, gunning down three people, including two mining officials, blowing up railway tracks and indulging in other acts of violence.

A day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described the rebels as the country’s “biggest internal threat”, suspected guerrillas killed two officials of Panam Coal Company in Pakur district of Jharkhand. Company director Sheetal Prasad and additional director Deenanath were killed when they were taking a morning walk Monday near Amarpara locality.

Don’t victimise sex trafficking victims further: experts

New Delhi, October 12: Experts Monday called for changing the laws on sex trafficking so the perpetrators of the trade are punished, instead of the victims, and effective measures are taken to ensure rehabilitation.

“Let’s not victimize the victims of sex trafficking further. Change the law, so that perpetrators of the trade can be punished,” said Ruchira Gupta, a former journalist who left her profession to fight against sex trafficking, and has recently won the Clinton Global Citizen award for her work.

Probing FIR by J&K police in Shopian case: CBI

New Delhi, October 12: CBI, probing the alleged double rape and murder case of two women in Shopian, has said it is investigating whether the FIR filed by the Jammu and Kashmir Police was right or wrong.

“Our immediate task is to focus, to prove, whether the FIR was right or wrong. That investigation is on,” CBI Director Ashwani Kumar told news agencies.

The CBI chief however, refused to say anything about the allegations of mishandling of the case by the state police saying that it was not the subject of investigation.

4 arrested for sending SMS threat to Bihar CM, MLC

Banka/Bhagalpur, October 12: Four persons were arrested and a mobile phone seized in connection with an SMS to a ruling JD(U) MLC threatening to kill him along with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar if they failed to pay Rs one crore.

Bhagalpur Superintendent of Police B S Meena said four persons were arrested during raids at various places in Bhagalpur district this afternoon.

Those arrested were identified as Manish Kumar, Chandan Kumar, Aditya Kumar and Pankaj Yadav and the mobile phone allegedly used for sending the SMS was seized from them, Meena said.

Six children die of malaria in Orissa district

Bhubaneswar, October 12: Six children have died of malaria in last seven days in Malkangiri district of Orissa, an official said Monday.
The deaths have been reported from the district’s Siadimal village.

“Six children have died of malaria. We have taken blood samples and have found some positive cases. Apart from the children, another man had died recently in the village. We have stationed a medical team there as some villagers have been affected and are undergoing treatment,” said district Chief Medical Officer R.K. Ghose.

Married woman kills self along with two lovers

Lakhtar, October 12: In a bizarre suicide pact, a married woman and her two paramours killed themselves by consuming pesticides together on Monday morning. The incident was reported from a village in Lakhtar taluka of Surendrangar district.

Officials of Lakhtar taluka police station said villagers spotted three bodies lying in a farm behind the Narmada pumping station on the outskirts of Jammar village near Lakhtar. Jassi Koli, 36 her husband’s younger brother Bharat Koli, 26 and her brother-in-law’s friend Ishwar Bhikha Koli, 23. The trio had consumed pesticides used for cotton crops.

Heroin worth Rs 75 lakh seized

Araria, October 12: Sashashtra Seema Bal (SSB) today seized heroin worth about Rs 75 lakh in international market and arrested one smuggler from Bathnaha chowk area in Bihar’s Araria district.

SSB Deputy Commandant V K Jha said SSB jawans intercepted a private bus which was on its way to Patna from Jogbani along Indo-Nepal border, and seized 750 gram heroin concealed in packets bearing marks of Thailand.

They arrested one smuggler, police said.

Jilted lover arrested for killing doctor in Raipur

Raipur, October 12: A jilted lover was today arrested for allegedly killing a junior doctor here.

Deepak Bardia, who runs an internet cafe in Jagdalpur, allegedly shot dead Pratik Sonwani, a PG student in Ophthalmology department of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, on Friday night, Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar said.

The murder was the result of a love triangle, he said.

Bardia, in his confession, told police that he had an affair of eight years with a girl studying at Ayurvedic College of the city.

Crackers worth over Rs.1 cr recovered in Uttar Pradesh

Allahabad, October 12: The police raided a storehouse in this Uttar Pradesh city and recovered fire crackers worth over Rs.1 crore which had been stocked illegally, officials said Monday.

The recovery was made by the special operation group late Sunday night from a storehouse in the Naini locality in the trans-Yamuna area of Allahabad.

“Based on information we raided the godown and recovered the fire crackers. The quantity is so huge that over a dozen trucks could be filled,” inspector S.K. Singh said.

Patient jumps off second floor of Lucknow hospital

Lucknow, October 12: A patient committed suicide by jumping from the second floor of a private hospital in this Uttar Pradesh capital Monday, police said.

Yashwant Singh, 45, was admitted to the Ajanta Hospital in Alambagh Sunday for treatment of a kidney ailment.

“Singh was kept in a private ward on the second floor. This (Monday) afternoon, he broke the window pane and jumped. He died on the spot,” police spokesperson A.K. Pathak told IANS.

A ‘beautiful’ woman led Gadchiroli ambush

Nagpur, October 12: The audacious Naxal ambush in Gadchiroli that left 17 policemen dead was led by a woman who was constantly directing her cadre to shoot and asking police to surrender.

42-year-old Bimala Chandra Sidam alias Tara akka (akka means sister), known for her beauty as well as her aggressive leadership, and her cadre encircled the policemen and fired indiscriminately, police sources said. Tara was heard over the wireless sets of the slain policemen directing her cadre to shoot. She was also using abusive language against the police telling them to surrender, the sources said.

Delhi boy found dead in Faridabad

Faridabad, October 12: An eight-year-old boy from Delhi was found dead in a car early this morning, within hours after he was allegedly kidnapped by his relative from outside his east Delhi residence.

Gulshan Jain was missing since last evening from Krishna Nagar and his body was recovered from a car driven by Pradeep Goel here on the outskirts of the capital, Sadhu Ram, SHO of Sarai Khauja in Faridabad said.

Goel, who is reportedly under debt, has been arrested after the body was recovered from his car.

Patient jumps off second floor of Lucknow hospital

Lucknow, October 12: A patient committed suicide by jumping from the second floor of a private hospital in this Uttar Pradesh capital Monday, police said.

3 held for getting 12-year-old girl married

Lucknow, October 12: Three people were arrested Monday for forcibly marrying off a 12-year-old girl to a 40-year-old man in Uttar Pradesh’s Etah district, police said.

In lieu of Rs.3 lakh, Lalaram, a resident of Nagsa village in Etah, some 300 km from Lucknow, Sunday married off his daughter to Shyamlal, who lives in a nearby village, the police added.

Head constable commits suicide

New Delhi, October 12: Head constable of the Barakhamba police station in New Delhi district allegedly committed suicide, police said today.

Rohtas (48), a resident of the Nazafgarh area, shot himself at around 2310 hrs yesterday in the duty officer’s room.

He was rushed to the RML hospital, but was declared brought dead by the doctors, a police officer said.

Though the reason behind his suicide was yet to be ascertained, he was said to have taken the extreme step in the presence of other officers.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and as many daughters.

Maoists torch four trucks, blast bridge in Jharkhand

Ranchi, October 12: Maoist rebels have torched four trucks and have blown up a bridge in Jharkhand, police said Monday.

According to police, one truck was torched late Sunday night on Grant Trunk (GT) road in Dhanbad district and three in neighbouring Giridih district. Maoist rebels also fired indiscriminately at buses passing through GT road in Dhanbad. Three people were injured in the firing.

Look out notice issued against suspected hawala kingpin

New Delhi, October 11: A Look Out Notice has been issued against suspected hawala kingpin Naresh Jain, who was recently booked by the Enforcement Directorate under Foreign Exchange Management Act.

Official sources said the Look Out Notice was issued to prevent the Indian businessman, who is accused of having a hawala network of over Rs 5,000 crore, from leaving the country through air, land or sea.

They said they are also investigating Jain’s claim that he had lost his Indian passport in Nepal and had entered the country by road.

Old woman dies during hospital power cut, government orders probe

New Delhi, October 11: The Delhi government Sunday ordered a probe into the death of 74-year-old Sharda Gaur, who died Saturday when her life support device failed during a power cut in a government hospital.

Gaur was admitted to the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital in New Delhi area Sep 7. She underwent angioplasty, following which she was kept in the intensive coronar care unit (ICCU). For the past few days she was on ventilator.

Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia ordered a probe into her death and said that the hospital authorities should “own up responsibility”.

Armed men loot train passengers in Bihar

Patna, October 11: More than 10 armed men Sunday looted cash and valuables worth Rs.2 lakh from passengers on a train in Jamui district of Bihar, police said.

The passengers were looted on the Howrah-New Delhi Janata Express near Lahaban station in Jamui, about 200 km from state capital Patna.

“Armed criminals boarded the train at Jasidih and stopped the train by pulling the (emergency) chain at an isolated place near Lahaban in Asansol-Jhajha section of East Central Railway. They then looted cash and valuables worth Rs.2 lakh,” a police officer said.

BJP leader killed in Madhya Pradesh

Bhopal, October 11: A leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was shot dead outside his house in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore city, police said Sunday.
Ghanshyam Patidar was shot at from point blank range late Saturday while taking a stroll in Srinagar colony, Indore Additional Superintendent of Police Akash Jindal told IANS. A land dispute is said to have led to the murder.
