Andhra couple behind spurt in naxal violence: SP

Hazaribagh, October 14: A couple based in Andhra Pradesh were responsible for the spurt of naxal violence in Bihar and Jharkhand, a senior police officer claimed today.

Confirming the arrest of Agriculture scientist-cum-Maoist Central Committee member Ravi Sharma and his wife B Anuradha here on October 10, Hazaribagh Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kamboj produced them before a news conference and claimed that they were running the Maoist outfit in Bihar and Jharkhand.

150,000 kg of adulterated khoya seized in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, October 14: Nearly 150,000 kg of adulterated khoya has been seized in the past few days in Ghaziabad, police said on Wednesday.

“We have recovered over 1,500 quintals (150,000 kg) of such products during several days of operation from Modinagar, Bhojpur Dasna and other areas. These were mostly prepared in interior areas and sent to the city. At least four arrests have been made and over a dozen suppliers and manufacturers have been detained in Modinagar and Ghanta-Ghar police stations,” a police spokesperson said.

Delhi cop quizzed in assets probe

New Delhi, October 14: A team from the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) Wednesday questioned a Delhi Police inspector over charges of amassing assets worth around Rs.20 crore (Rs.200 million), police said.

The ACB Tuesday had conducted raids at properties allegedly owned by Inspector Roshan Lal, the station house officer of the Kalyanpuri police station in east Delhi.

Man gets life term for raping and murdering minor

Kozhikode, October 14: A local court here today sentenced a man to life imprisonment for harassing and killing a minor girl last year.

Second sessions court judge Thomas Kurian also imposed a fine of Rs six lakh on 46-year-old Mayinkutty.

The court found him guilty of luring a fourth standard girl to his house at Cherandathur near Vadakara and raping and murdering her on June 23, 2008.

28 persons arrested with synthetic milk, milk products

Lucknow, October 14: In a drive conducted against synthetic milk and milk products in western Uttar Pradesh on, 28 people were arrested and fake paneer, cream, mava and other milk products were seized in large quantity.

ADG Brij Lal told newspersons here that nine persons were arrested near Sardar Nagar village of Bareilly and two qunital spurious paneer and 135 kilogram cream were seized from their possession last night while they were moving in a utility vehicle.

Five held in cheating case

New Delhi, October 14: Five persons were arrested in the national capital for allegedly attempting to withdraw Rs 15 lakh from the account a person using forged documents, police said today.

The arrested were identified as Anil Kumar (32), Gaurav (25), Sunder (30), Dinesh (28) and Harish (22), Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H G S Dhaliwal said.

The arrests came following a complaint by Vinay Verma of Safdarjang Enclave regarding withdrawal of Rs 15 lakh from his account in HDFC Bank in Connaught Place by some cheats who applied for transfer of the money to another account.

Constable held for circulating obscene video in Andhra

Hyderabad, October 14: A constable was today arrested and suspended on charges of possessing and circulating obscene video through his mobile phone in Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district.

M B Shakil, a native of Ongole town and attached to the Special Party of the district police, allegedly “filmed his sexual act” on his mobile phone and circulated the same among his colleagues and friends, a senior police officer said.

“After the porn video matter came to light today, the constable was immediately suspended pending further investigation and was also arrested,” he said.

Three booked under NSA for selling fake milk products

Bhopal, October 14: Three businessmen in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district were booked under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) for allegedly trading in spurious milk products, police said.

According to police , the three – Gyanesh Sharma, Brajesh Dubey and Naresh Nigam – used to send spurious milk products including ‘ghee’ and ‘mawa’ to various parts of the state.

The three men are absconding, a police officer said.

‘Traffic cops’ rob businessman of Rs.22 lakh

New Delhi, October 14: Four men, wearing traffic police uniforms, robbed a businessman of Rs.22 lakh (Rs.2.2 million) in the national capital Wednesday, police said.

“The incident took place around 11.45 a.m. in Keshavpuram area. The victim, Akshay Aggarwal, was going in his car to a bank to deposit Rs.2.2 million in cash when two people waylaid him,” a senior police officer said.

“Aggarwal told us that when he stepped out, two others appeared and at gunpoint snatched from him the bag containing the cash. The four men then fled from the spot,” the officer added.

Maoist commander arrested from Ranchi hospital

Ranchi, October 14: A Maoist leader, undergoing treatment in a hospital under a fake name, was arrested in Ranchi on Wednesday, police said.

Bhaiaram Oraon, the self-styled commander of People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI) was held from Gurunanak Hospital in this Jharkhand capital.

“Bhaiaram Oran was getting treatment in name of Budhua Oraon. According to doctors, he is suffering from malaria. He was admitted on Tuesday. His associates managed to escape,” a police official said.

Canadian police clueless about death of Sikh woman, three kids

Toronto, October 14: Mystery surrounding the murder of a young Sikh woman and three newborn kids in Calgary last week deepened Tuesday, with police calling the case “complex and delicate”. They are not even saying if it was a murder.

Chandigarh-born Harsimrat Kahlon, 27, was found dead by her common-law husband Harnek Mahal in their suite last Sunday.

The term common-law husband refers to a partner who is not legally married to the woman.

When police came to the suite, they found the body of Kahlon who was alone at home.

Naxal sympathisers arrested

Bangalore, October 13: Two alleged naxal sympathisers were arrested in Karnataka’s Chikamagalur district today.

The two, Narayanan (32) and Chandru (28), were caught while pasting posters relating to naxalism, police alleged.

Maoists blast rail tracks in Kharagpur division

Jamshedpur, Oct 13 (PTI) Maoists blasted rail tracks near Dalbhumgarh station in Jharkhand late tonight on the second day of their strike today, badly affecting train movement between Kharagpur and Tatanagar under South-Eastern Railway.

Railway sources said a feet-long track in the up section was blown up by the extremists just after a goods train passed the stretch under Kharagpur sub-division of SER.

Long distance train services along the Howrah-Mumbai route were halted following the incident as a special patrolling team went to the spot.

District Cong leader stabbed in Howrah

Howrah (WB), October 13: A Congress leader was stabbed in Howrah district tonight triggering tension in the area.

Police said Omprakash Jaiswal, district Congress leader and former General Secretary of the district unit, was attacked with sharp weapons in Howrah town.

Jaiswal, who was seriously injured, had to be referred to a Kolkata hospital from Howrah General Hospital. His family alleged that people running an illicit liquor den in the locality were behind the crime as Jaiswal was trying to get the hooch dens closed.

Railway wagon catches fire, no casualty

Howrah (WB), October 13: Panic spread when a rail wagon loaded with coal caught fire near Sankrail rail station under Eastern Railway this afternoon.

Two fire tenders managed to douse the flames after fighting for one hour, fire brigade sources said.

There was no report of any casualty.

The flames, seen from the platform, at one time caused widespread panic with nearby shops downing shutters and people running away from the area.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.

The blaze, which broke out in the stranded wagon at rail yard, did not disrupt train movement.

Three arrested, 15 stolen two-wheelers recovered

Bangalore, October 13: Three persons have been arrested and 15 two-wheelers, totally worth around six lakh recovered from them in two separate incidents in the city.

According to police, two persons were arrested from Kumaraswamy layout and 10 two-wheelers worth Rs four lakh stolen from various parts of the city recovered from them.

In the second incident, a 19-year-old native of Bihar was arrested and five two-wheelers worth Rs 1.9 lakh stolen from various areas of the city recovered.

Gunmen attack former MP, 2 security men killed

Bhubaneswar, October 13: Two security men accompanying former MP and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Orissa unit president Sudam Marandi were killed Tuesday when they were attacked by unidentified armed men in Orissa’s Mayurbhanj district, police said. Marandi, though had a narrow escape.

Marandi was attacked while on his way to a football match in Chandua police station area in Mayurbhanj district.

Married woman kills self along with two lovers

Lakhtar, October 13: In a bizarre suicide pact, a married woman and her two paramours killed themselves by consuming pesticides together on Monday morning. The incident was reported from a village in Lakhtar taluka of Surendrangar district.

Officials of Lakhtar taluka police station said villagers spotted three bodies lying in a farm behind the Narmada pumping station on the outskirts of Jammar village near Lakhtar. Jassi Koli, 36 her husband’s younger brother Bharat Koli, 26 and her brother-in-law’s friend Ishwar Bhikha Koli, 23. The trio had consumed pesticides used for cotton crops.

Woman killed, 10 injured in clash for water at handpump

Jaipur, October 13: One woman was today killed and at least 10 others were injured in a clash between two groups of people over a dispute on water, the police said.

The incident took place at Mimyadpur village in Bharatpur district and the deceased was identified as Shakuntla, they said.

The injured were rushed to a government hospital in Halena in Bharatpur district where the condition of two persons said to be serious, the police said.

Seven persons killed in different road mishaps

Lucknow, October 13: Seven persons were killed in separate road accidents in different parts of the state since last night, home department sources here said today.

In Shahjahanpur, four people were killed and six others injured, when the tempo in which they were travelling was hit by a truck on Delhi-Lucknow road yesterday.

Woman burnt to death; hubby arrested

Srinagar, October 13: A 25-year-old woman was allegedly burnt to death and police have arrested her husband on a complaint from her family in Bandipora district.

Showkat Ahmad Malla, the husband of the deceased Masrat Jan, was arrested from his house at Pothushahi, 55 kms from here, this morning, a police officer told PTI.

Jan’s brother Mohammad Ramzan Kumar alleged that his sister was set ablaze by her husband and in-laws last night.

They had married last year.

Polling agent killed in clash, 25 pc turnout

Chandigarh, October 13: Barring stray incidents of poll violence, which claimed the life of a polling agent, Haryana recorded a turnout of over 25 per cent till noon today.

A polling agent was killed in a clash between supporters of Congress candidate Dillu Ram and Independent aspirant Kulwant Bazigar in Gulha assembly constituency in Kaithal district, a police official said.

The 48-year-old deceased, Jyoti Ram, was Bazigar’s polling agent.

Maoists blow up Jharkhand school in Chatra area

Ranchi, October 13: Maoists blew up a school building in Jharkhand’s Chatra district early this morning on the second day of their two-day Jharkhand-Bihar shutdown.

“A group of armed Maoists packed dynamites inside the Nawadih Middle School and triggered the blast, damaging its three rooms,” Superintendent of Police, D B Sharma, told reporters in Chatra.

CPI (Maoists) have been observing a 48-hour shutdown to protest the Centre’s alleged efforts to put down their campaign by force.

Maoists continue attacks on second day of shutdown

Patna/Ranchi, October 13: Maoists continued to unleash violence on the second day of their two-day shutdown, setting ablaze a rail office in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district after briefly taking six officials hostage, blowing up block offices and telecom towers besides bombing a school in neighbouring Jharkhand.

In a midnight attack, around 150 ultras stormed Banshipur railway station in the important Patna-Kiul-Jhajha section under the Danapur division of the East Central Railway and torched a railway panel room besides destroying the traffic control system, railway officials said.

Sikh woman’s murder in Canada still a mystery

Toronto, October 13: The murder of a young Sikh woman and three kids in a basement suite in Calgary last week remains a mystery.

Twenty-seven-year-old Harsimrat Kahlon was found dead by her boyfriend Harnek Mahal. Mahal, who was away, tried calling her. When she didn’t respond, he reported the matter to police last Thursday.

When police came to the suite, they found not only the body of Kahlon but also those of three dead newborns concealed in suitcases.

It is known whether the newborns belonged to Kahlon.
