Mumbai, October 16: A 22-year-old woman killed her two sons and committed suicide in her Malwani residence on Thursday evening. According to the police, Amravati Gupta killed herself and her children Siddharth, 3 and the one and a half-year-old son by pouring kerosene and lighting a matchstick.

Teacher ‘tortures’ adopted student

Mumbai, October 16: A 13-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted by her school teacher, who had adopted her, because she was not doing his household work. The victim was admitted to a hospital in Kalwa with fractured legs and many wounds on the body. The accused, Kaushar Anwar, 38, works in Shaheen Urdu High School and the victim is a Class VIII student.

Arms supplier caught in Mumbai

Mumbai, October 15: A Gujarat-based firearms supplier was arrested from Mumbai Central area in south Mumbai for allegedly possessing sophisticated pistols and cartridges meant to be delivered in the city, police said today.

The supplier brought the firearms in a bag from Mansor in Madhya Pradesh to deliver them to a group in Mumbai, they said adding the weapons were supposed to be delivered during the election period.

Woman, son commit suicide

Jind, October 15: Apparently upset over the police inaction in resolving the mystery death of her elder son, a woman allegedly committed suicide along with her younger son by consuming poisonous tablets here.

The mother-son duo, resident of Krishna colony here, took the extreme step yesterday. They were taken to hospital where they died during treatment, police said.

Manjit (27), elder son of Dayawanti (47), was kidnapped on January 28, 2009. Later, body of Manjit was found near Patwar village on February 5, 2009.

Armed dacoits loot Agra residents, kill policeman

Agra, October 15: Armed bandits targetted half a dozen houses in Kahrai village close to Taj Ganj in the wee hours of Thursday and snatched gold ornaments from the women. A retired Provincial Armed Constabulary constable was beaten to death when he resisted the bandits, police said.

Police said the dacoits snatched gold ear-rings from women, leaving them bleeding. More than a dozen women were injured, police said.

Youth murdered in broad day light

Varanasi, October 15: A youth was shot dead just before the Aurangabad police outpost under Luxa police station today.

SP-City Vijay Bhushan said that Khurshid (24 years) had recently joined a glass and plywood shop in Aurangabad area.

At about 10.30 am, he was installing a signboard outside his shop when two armed miscreants raided the place and shot him dead from point blank range, Bhushan said adding that the killers fled from the scene on foot.

CPI’s national council member killed in road accident

Begusarai, October 15: Subhashini Sharma, national council member of Communist Party of India was today killed when a motorcycle on which she was riding a pillion met with an accident near Zero Mile in Bihar’s Begusarai district, police said.

The accident occurred when she was returning to her home in Begusarai town after attending a party function at Bihat, DSP (Sadar) Vivekanand said.

Sharma, also general secretary of Bihar Women’s Society, fell down from the bike and suffered severe head injuries.

CPI’s national council member killed in road accident

Begusarai (Bihar), October 15: A Communist Party of India member was today killed when a motorcycle on which she was riding a pillion met with an accident in Begusarai town, police said.

The accident occurred when Subhashini Sharma, a national council member of CPI was returning home after attending a party function at Bihat, DSP (Sadar) Vivekanand said.

Sharma (61), also general secretary of Bihar Women’s Society, fell down from the bike when it skidded and suffered severe head injuries.

Man kills self by jumping off fifth floor of hospital

New Delhi, October 15: A 20-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) hospital, police said Thursday.

According to police, the victim, Ravi, tried to end his life twice.

“We received a call at around 7 p.m. Wednesday. Ravi had an altercation with his mother Usha. While his mother consumed poison, Ravi jumped off from the third floor of his residence,” a senior police officer.

Singapore national of Chinese origin arrested for fraud

Chennai, October 15: A Singapore national of Chinese origin was arrested today in connection with a fake credit card case after he tried to purchase gold ornaments using the card, whose original holder is a citizen of Bangladesh.

Police identified the arrested as Ton Koh Yu (28) and said four fake credit cards, allegedly procured in Malaysia, and two mobile phones were recovered from him.

Sub-inspector caught red handed accepting bribe

Srinagar, October 15: A sub-inspector was arrested by State Vigilance Organisation after being caught red handed, while accepting a bribe to settle a property dispute in Kupwara district.

Sub-Inspector Ghulam Ahmad Shah posted in Police Station Kupwara was arrested by sleuths of SVO at Bumhama village of Kupwara, 90 kilometres from here this afternoon for accepting Rs 1,000 from a person, a spokesman of the SVO said here this evening.

Inter-state fake credit card racket busted in Kerala

Kannur, October 15: An inter-state fake credit card racket duping jewellers and textile shops of goods worth lakhs of rupees was busted by police today with the arrest of six persons, including five from Maharashtra.

The six were arrested here today by a police team led by IG Tomin Thachankary, investigating the case of purchase of Rs 2.5 lakh worth of ornaments from a jewellery shop here using forged cards recently, police said.

Four killed as mini-bus falls into village drain

Amritsar, October 15: Four persons including three women were killed and four others received minor injuries, when a private mini-bus fell into a drain here today, police said.

According to police the accident took place at village Bhakna near Indo-Pak Attari border, when the driver of the ill-fated bus lost control over the steering, while negotiation a sharp curve and bus slipped into drain.

Senior police officials along with fire brigade team rushed to the spot to carry out rescue operations and cranes were pressed into service to pull out the bus.

Man taken to RML for suicide bid, jumps to death from there

New Delhi, October 15: A 20-year-old man allegedly jumped to death from the fifth floor of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, barely half an hour after he was admitted there for attempted suicide, police said today.

Ravi allegedly jumped from the third floor of his Inderpuri residence yesterday after he had an altercation with his mother Usha last evening. His mother also allegedly consumed some poisonous substances.

23 arrested with adulterated milk products

Lucknow, October 15: Twenty-three people were arrested and a huge quantity of adulterated milk products was seized in a series of raids conducted at various places in the state in the last 24 hours.

Three persons were arrested following a raid at a dairy in Raya area of Mathura and various ingredients used in making synthetic milk such as castic soda, hydrogen peroxide, bleaching powder, white cement, white paint and white powder were seized, ADG, law and order, Brij Lal told reporters here.

Murderous assault on TISS professor: HC transfers probe to CID

Mumbai, October 15: In an indictment of the state police, the Bombay High Court today observed it seemed not “serious” in investigating the case of murderous assault on TISS professor Shamim Modi and handed it over to the Crime Branch CID.

“Police have not been serious in this matter,” said the division bench of Justices Bilal Nazki and A R Joshi and handed over the case to CB CID, asking it to complete the probe within three months.

Man strangled for stealing mobile phone

New Delhi, October 15: A young man was strangled by a man and his two sons on suspicion of stealing their mobile phone, police said today.

The incident took place in Bindapur in west Delhi on October 13 around 10 pm.

Dinesh was allegedly murdered by Ramprasad and his sons Ashok and Manoj. He was strangled inside Ramprasad’s cycle shop with a brake wire, police said.

They said an argument started over a mobile phone which Dinesh had allegedly stolen from the accused.

Person with terror links arrested in Bareilly

Lucknow, October 15: One person allegedly having links with terror outfits has been arrested in Bareilly district, police said today.

Chand Mohammad was arrested from near Sathvadi Mazar in Karamchari Nagar area last night with a country-made weapon, five cartridges and three IEDs, ADG Law and Order Brij Lal said.

He told reporters that pamphlets carrying the names of Harkat-ul-Jehad Islami (HuJI), Bangladeshi Islamic Hukumat Taliban were recovered from him.

Businessman robbed of Rs.900,000 in cash

New Delhi, October 15: Two armed men robbed a businessman of Rs.900,000 in cash while he was on his way to deposit the money in a bank in the national capital Thursday.

Khalid Ali Shah, who runs a fish business, was on his way to the bank when the motorcycle borne assailants hit his car around 10 a.m. near Ghazipur flyover in east Delhi, a police officer said.

“The driver lost control and hit a divider. The robbers took out the money bag and escaped on motorcycle from the spot,” the officer said.

Six arrested for credit card fraud

Kannur, October 15: Six people were arrested here for their alleged involvement in credit card frauds, the police said Thursday.

Five of the arrested men are from Mumbai and the other from Kerala. They made fake credit cards with the details of original card holders and duped many, Inspector General Tomin J. Thachenkery told IANS.

According to the police, the arrested men are part of an international racket, which is controlled by a 30-year-old Nigerian national, Ali.

Thachenkery said the police have cast the net for Ali, who operates from Mumbai.

Couple in Uttar Pradesh forced to become siblings

Lucknow, October 15: Repeatedly slapping a love-struck couple with shoes for their ‘illegitimate’ love affair, an Uttar Pradesh village council forced them to tie a rakhi and become siblings, police said Thursday.

The incident occurred late Wednesday in Kukra village in Bijnor district, about 350 km from here.

Pintoo Sharma, 30, and his 28-year-old lover were brought before a village panchayat when they were found sitting together in a garden Wednesday evening, locals said.

Hawala racket busted, Rs 25 lakh seized

Jaipur, October 14: Rajasthan Police tonight claimed to have busted a ‘hawala’ racket here with the arrest of eight persons and seizure of Rs 25 lakh from their offices here in the walled city.

Three teams of police raided business houses being operated here from Surat in Gujarat, Inspector General of Police (IGP-Range) I B L Soni told PTI over telephone.

Income Tax officials were also called to assist the police in the operation, the IGP said.

A case has been lodged against the accused, he added.

Railway engineer run over by train

Motihari, October 14: A railway engineer was run over by a train at Singhia railway crossing when he was supervising work in Bihar’s East Champaran district today, railway sources said.

Vinod Kumar Gautam (35), the engineer who was supervising work at the crossing, came under the wheels of the speeding train and was critically injured, Motihari Assistant Station Master Shyam Kumar said.

The engineer, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead, Kumar said.

One arrested with fake currency in Raipur

Raipur, October 14: A person has been arrested here with fake currency having face value of Rs six lakh, while another involved in the alleged racket managed to escape, police said today.

Acting on a tip off, police arrested Sanjay Kumar Bhoi from MG Road area in the city and recovered fake currency of Rs six lakh from him, SP Raipur, Amit Kumar, told PTI, adding, alleged gang leader Johatram Yadav gave police the slip.

The duo was trying to pump fake currency into the market ahead of Diwali, he said.
