British woman rapist arrested

Jaipur, October 21: Hotelier Parbat Singh, a convict in the British woman rape case who was at large after obtaining bail, was arrested in Bapi town near the Gujarat-Maharashtra border, a top police officer said.

Singh, arrested last night, was brought to Udaipur and produced in a court which remanded him to judicial custody, SP (Udaipur) Sanjaib Kumar Narzary told PTI here by telephone.

Early this year, the Supreme Court directed the Rajasthan Police to arrest Parbat who was on bail.

Goa serial killers committed murder in Mumbai too: Police

Panaji, October 21: Four persons, including a woman and a 16-year-old girl who were arrested by the Goa police earlier this week for multiple murders in the state, had left a trail of blood in Mumbai too, police said.
Speaking to reporters here Wednesday, Superintendent of Police (CID) Atmaram Deshpande said that the gang, which includes a woman and a 16-year-old girl, had also confessed to murdering a woman in Virar, a suburb on the outskirts of Mumbai.

Goa blast accused’s father demands compensation

Panaji, October 21: The father of the main accused in the Goa Diwali eve blast case has served a legal notice on the Goa police, demanding compensation for harassing the family by not handing over the Sanatan Sanstha activist’s body to them in time.

The notice which was served to the Margao police Wednesday, seeks Rs.20,000 as damages for the expenses incurred by the Malgonda Patil’s family, who arrived in Goa from Sangli Oct 18 to claim his body, which is still lying in the morgue.

Soumya murder: Court asks Police to handcuff Ravi Kapoor

New Delhi, October 21: A city court Wednesday asked the Delhi Police to handcuff Ravi Kapoor, main accused in the murders of TV scribe Soumya Vishwanathan and IT executive Jigisha Ghosh, after he tried to escape from judicial custody.

Kapoor, who was arrested March 24 this year in connection with the sensational murders, had tried to escape Oct 19 by throwing chili powder on the policemen during his visit to Safdarjung Hospital for a check-up.

15-year-old killed by minister’s car in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, October 21: A 15-year-old boy was killed and two others were injured when the speeding car of a Uttar Pradesh minister ran over them Wednesday on the Rae Bareli-Allahabad highway, officials said here.
Minister of State for Stamps Nand Kishore Nandi, who was in the car at the time of the accident, hastily shifted into his escort vehicle and sped away from the scene.

After running over Saurabh, who was on a bicycle, the car knocked down two other boys walking down the road, before ramming into a shop, eyewitnesses said.

Court rejects Kobad Ghandy’s bail plea

New Delhi, October 21: Rejecting the bail plea of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) leader Kobad Ghandy, a city court Wednesday directed the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to ascertain whether he was fit enough to undergo a narco-test as required by the police.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja directed the medical superintendent of AIIMS to constitute a medical board to ascertain the health condition of Ghandy and asked him to file a report by Oct 29.

20 kg hashish seized at Delhi airport

New Delhi, October 21: At least 20 kg of hashish worth Rs.20 lakh (Rs.2 million) concealed in a consignment of religious books bound for Canada was seized at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Wednesday, a customs official said.

“The consignment was found during a search at IGI’s new courier terminal when the customs officials checked the courier packet containing 78 religious books,” said a customs source.

Two members of inter-state gang arrested

Ballia, October 21: Two members of an inter-state gang duping people in name of providing them jobs in army were arrested here today.

Superintendent of Police, Chandra Prakash said that one Satish Thakur alias Satish Kori of Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh) and Jitendra Kumar Singh of Mirzapur were arrested in a joint operation of special operation group and police.

Those arrested have confessed having duped five people luring them to provide jobs in army in Ballia and taking over rupees seven lakh from them, the SP said.

Two-year-old abducted girl rescued

Haryana, October 21: A two-year-old child, who was kidnapped from outside her house in this Haryana town on Tuesday evening, was brought back on Wednesday but police and family remained tight-lipped on how the child was rescued.

Amitabh Dhillon, district police chief, said: “We cannot divulge anything as of now because it may hamper our investigation.”

According to police, four men, in their early 20s, allegedly kidnapped Jia from the garden outside her house here in Sector-7.

Lucknow, October 21: In a testimony to the diminishing value of human life for the highly ambitious young minds, a boy murdered his schoolmate for refusing to share the telephone number of his girlfriend in Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh. The fine planning and execution of the murder left the cops on a wild-goose chase for nearly 48 hours before they could nail the accused.

Anger, relief as train crash survivors reach Delhi

New Delhi, October 21: Relief was writ large on the faces of survivors of two Delhi bound passenger trains that collided early on Wednesday in Mathura city in Uttar Pradesh, killing 23 people. But many complained of delayed reaction by the authorities.

Two bogies at the rear of the Mewar Express were damaged after the engine of the Goa Express telescoped into one, but these were detached by the authorities and the train reached Nizamuddin railway station in south Delhi – its destination – seven hours behind schedule.

Private bank looted in Jaipur

Jaipur, October 21: Three masked robbers today allegedly looted Rs 3.85 lakh cash at gun-point from a private cooperative bank in Khatipura area here, police said.

Robbers, who struck at Rajlaxmi Cooperative Bank this afternoon, also snatched away gold chain of a woman clerk before fleeing on motorcycle, Inspector-General of Police B L Soni said.

They used two country-made pistols to terrorise the employees, the officer said, adding the armed guard of the bank was in toilet when the incident occurred.

Roads deserted, uneasy calm at Bengal police station

Sankrail (West Bengal), October 21: Amid scattered furniture and blood stains, an uneasy calm prevailed at the Sankrail police station area Wednesday – a day after Maoists carried out a daring attack, killing two officers and abducting another.

Even as police recovered one landmine and a metal pot containing Maoist posters near the violence-hit area in West Midnapore district, the streets wore a deserted look. Most shops and roadside kiosks were closed, with normal life almost coming to a halt.

Three family members killed in road accident

Lucknow, October 21: Three of a family were killed when a car collided with a truck in Banthara area on Lucknow-Kanpur highway, police said here.

Sabali (48), his nephew Ramu (22) and another relative Dholi (25) were killed when the car they were travelling in rammed into a stationary truck in Banthara yesterday, they said.

Sabali, who was a scrap dealer from Gonda, was on his way to Unnao to deliver a consignment. He was injured and rushed to a hospital where his condition was stated to be serious, police said.

Former TN minister, wife attacked

Erode, Oct 21 (PTI) A DMK MLA and his wife sustained serious injuries when they were allegedly attacked by an unidentified gang at their house at Kanjikoil near here in the wee hours today, police said here.

The 10-member gang, armed with deadly weapons, barged into the house of N K K P Raja, DMK MLA from Erode assembly constituency, at around 2 AM and attacked the minister and his wife Uma.

Both sustained serious injuries and were admitted to a private hospital here.

Raja was Handloom and Textile Minister for nearly a year in 2006 in the DMK ministry.

Maoists blast school building in Bihar

Banka, October 21: Maoists blew up a state-run primary school at Gerua village in Bihar’s Banka district in the wee hours today.

Over 100 ultras surrounded the building at around 2.30 am and used dynamites to trigger the explosion, police said.

The roofs of the three-room school caved in due to the explosion.

The school was adjacent to the Sangrampur block office which was blown up by the Maoists last week.

The district administration had earlier planned to set up a police post at the school.

Senior officials reached the spot and combing operation was on in the area.

10 killed as Goa Express rams into stationary train

Mathura, October 21: At least 10 passengers were killed and around 20 injured when the Delhi-bound Goa Samparkranti Express rammed into the stationary Mewar Express near here in the wee hours today.

The Goa Express hit the Mewar Express from behind at 4:50 AM, Rajesh Vajpayee, CPRO North-Central Railway, told PTI.

An unreserved compartment of the Mewar Express was damaged in the accident that took place between Mathura and Vrindavan.

Divisional Railway Manager, Agra, R D Tripathi, who was at the spot, said prima facie the train driver of the Goa Express was at fault.

Delhi police informer shot dead in Noida

Noida, Octoberr 21: A man working as informer to the Delhi Police was shot dead by a gang of car robbers in the Sector-61 area of Noida Tuesday afternoon, when he was leading the police to them, police said.

Pramod Kumar had led a Delhi Police team to the suspected hideout of a car lifting gang in Sector-61. As instructed by the police, he went alone to the flat to call up the robbers to help police apprehend them.

10 killed in Mathura train accident

Agra, October 21: At least 10 people were reportedly killed and over a dozen injured when two passenger trains collided early Wednesday morning in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura city, officials said.

The accident occurred at about 5:00 a.m. when the Goa Express rammed into the stationary Mewar Express from behind at an outer signal, about 55 km from here. Both the trains were headed for Delhi.

About 50 people are believed to be still trapped in a mangled carriage of the Mewar Express, an official told IANS.

10 killed in deadly Mathura train collision

Agra, October 21:At least 10 people were reportedly killed, over a dozen injured and several others believed to be trapped in a mangled carriage after two trains collided Wednesday morning in Mathura city in Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

The accident occurred when the Goa Express rammed into the stationary Mewar Express from behind at an outer signal, some 55 km from Agra. About 50 people are believed to be still trapped in a mangled carriage of the Mewar Express, an official told IANS over phone.

New Delhi, October 21: At least 10 persons were killed and 20 injured in a collision between Goa Express and Mewar Express trains near Mathura early Wednesday.

The incident occurred at around 4.45 am, near the Bajna Bridge in Mathura, when the Goa Express rammed the stationary Mewar Express from behind; both trains were Delhi-bound.

The Vasco-da-Gama-Nizamuddin Goa Express hit the Udaipur City-Nizamuddin Mewar Express from behind at around 4:45 AM, Rajesh Vajpayee, CPRO North-Central Railway said. An unreserved compartment of the Mewar Express was damaged.

Village ‘witches’ beaten in India

Jharkhand, October 21: Five Muslim widows branded as ‘witches’ by villagers and a local cleric were paraded naked, beaten and forced to eat human excrement in a remote village of Deoghar district in India.

Local police said the victims were Muslim widows who had been labelled as witches by a local cleric.

The incident occurred on Sunday in a remote village in Deoghar district.

Correspondents say the abuse of women who are branded as witches is common, but rare footage of the incident has caused outrage across India.

Engineer abducted by NDFB militants: Police

Kokrajhar, October 21: Assam police today said that Andhra Pradesh engineer P Krishna Rao was kidnapped by NDFB militants and all possibilities are being explored to secure his release.

“We have established that the kidnapping was the handiwork of anti-talk faction of NDFB. We are exploring all possibilities to get Rao released,” Kokrajhar superintendent of police P K Dutta said.

Farm house looted, Dalit woman gang raped in Greater Noida

Greater Noida, October 20: About a dozen armed men barged into a farm house here, gang raped a Dalit woman employee and looted cash and jewelry available in the servant quarters Monday night, police said Tuesday.

The men armed with pistols, knives and iron rods raided the farm house owned by Atar Singh Bhati in Kathera area under Dadri police station of Greater Noida, overpowered and tied up all the male members and took all the available cash and jewelry from their quarters.
