Huge quantities of explosives recovered in Assam

Tezpur, October 25: Huge quantities of explosives, including RDX, were recovered by security personnel from Assam’s Sonitpur district in stepped up search operations in view of intelligence reports on possibility of attacks by NDFB and ULFA militants, officials said.

Acting on a tip-off, Assam Rifles personnel recovered four kg RDX from a house at Gutlong in Tezpur and arrested a person in this connection.

A powerful IED planted under a large pipe by suspected militants at Nayapathar in the district were recovered by patrolling securitymen.

CBI team leaves for US, Mauritius for Satyam probe

New Delhi, October 25: A CBI team has left for Mauritius and the United States to probe alleged diversion of funds by disgraced Satyam founder B Ramalinga Raju to these countries.

Funds were re-routed back to India via European countries as “investments” in nearly 300 alleged fictitious companies floated in the name of his relatives, official sources said.

14 cops injured in stone-pelting in Bhopal

Bhopal, October 25: Fourteen policemen escorting the anti-encroachment squad of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) were injured Sunday as a mob opposing the drive pelted stones at the team, police said.

The trouble started when the squad removed an illegally constructed temple before dawn in Char Imli area where a majority of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and other senior government officials live.

Man-animal conflict: Villagers poison elephants in Assam

Guwahati, October 25: Wildlife authorities in Assam have warned that the human-elephant conflict has reached alarming proportions with villagers poisoning to death at least four wild elephants in the past three weeks by lacing toxic chemicals in homemade moonshine.

According to wildlife officials, the latest incident of an adult male poisoned to death was reported Saturday from village Chechapani in Goalpara district, about 170 km west of Assam’s main city of Guwahati.

Two Maoists arrested in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, October 25: Two Maoist guerrillas were arrested early Sunday during a combing operation in Rayagada district of Orissa, police said.

“Two Maoist rebels were arrested from the forested area of Gudari area. They were involved in several cases,” Superintendent of Police Asish Kumar Singh said.

Singh said the rebels were arrested during a joint combing operation by Special Operations Group (SOG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel.

Rayagada is more than 300 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.

PRO ‘involved’ in sex-for-diploma scandal arrested

Lucknow, October 25: A public relations officer (PRO) of a private nursing institute, one of the key accused in sex-for-diploma scandal in Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested for the second time after a fresh case was lodged against him, police said today.

Ramji Bajpai, PRO of KK Hospital and Nursing Institute, was arrested yesterday under various Sections of the IPC.

On October 4, Satya Bhama Singh, a third year student at the institute, had lodged a complaint accusing the college management of making “indecent demands” for allowing her to appear in the final year examination.

Three Maoists killed in Jharkhand

Ranchi, October 25: Three Maoist guerrillas were killed in a gun battle with security forces on the outskirts of this Jharkhand capital, police said Sunday.

The gun battle took place near Jonha, around 45 km from Ranchi, late Saturday.

After a tip-off, police had launched a search operation along with the para-military forces.

‘Maoist rebels were going somewhere in two vehicles. When police tried to stop them, they started firing at the police. In the gun battle, three Maoist guerrillas were killed,’ a police officer said.

Four policemen arrested in MBA student killing case

Dehradun, October 25: Four more policemen have been arrested by CBI for allegedly killing MBA student Ranvir Singh in an encounter on July 3 here.

Three policemen were arrested in the case on October 14.

Dehradun SSP Abhinav Kumar said policemen Nitin Chauhan, Chandramohan Rawat, Neeraj Yadav and Rajesh Bisht were arrested late last night and were produced before the special CBI court today where they were remanded to 14-day custody.

22-year-old Singh, MBA student from Ghaziabad, was shot dead from a close range during the visit of President Pratibha Patil here.

Framing of charges deferred in Malta boat tragedy case

New Delhi, October 25: Framing of charges in a 12-year- old case, relating to drowning of over 170 Indian illegal immigrants near Malta in the Mediterranean sea, has been deferred by a Delhi court after it was told that its earlier order has been challenged by three of the accused.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Amit Bansal, who was to frame criminal charges against 20 accused, including two Delhi police officials, adjourned the matter to January 16 next year.

Ghaziabad, October 24: Two men were killed and over 20 students of the Delhi Public School, Indirapuram, including nine Germans, suffered minor injuries in a head-on collision between a jeep and a bus on a national highway in Uttar Pradesh.

The students and their teachers were returning from an educational tour to Jim Corbett National Park when their bus collilded with a Scorpio jeep on the National Highway-24 in Gajraula in J.P. Nagar district. The driver of the school bus fled the spot.

Relatives of criminal thrash police, kill one cop

Ranchi, October 24: Relatives of a criminal and other villagers mercilessly beat four Patna policemen who had come to arrest him on the outskirts of Ranchi, leading to the death of one cop while the other three are in serious condition in hospital, police said today.

According to police, the four policemen from Patna had arrived at Irba village, on the outskirts of Ranchi, to arrest a criminal Naushad on Friday night. After they took Naushad into custody, his relatives and other villagers started beating the policemen.

Five killed in road mishap

Raipur, October 24: Five persons including four members of a family were killed and two others injured in a road accident in Dhamtari district of Chhattisgarh, police said. They mishap took place last evening when the jeep in which they were travelling collided head on with a truck near Puroor power substation, they said.

The deceased, who were on their way to Dallirajhara village, were identified as– Rakesh Jain, Rishabh Jain, Ashutosh Jain, Kamal Baid and driver Narayan, police said. The injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital, they said.

Enquiry ordered into escape of four undertrials

Aligarh (UP), October 24: A departmental enquiry has been ordered into the escape of four undertrials from police custody while being taken to a court here three days ago, a top police official said today.

Bobby, Amar Pal, Furqan and Shahzad escaped from police custody on Wednesday while they were being taken to the district court.

While Shahzad and Amar Pal were recaptured, Bobby and Furqan managed to flee, Superintendent of Police Mansingh Chauhan said, adding a departmental enquiry has been ordered into the incident.

Maoists kill two people in Jharkhand

Ranchi, October 24: Maoist rebels killed two villagers on suspicion of being police informers in Palamau district of Jharkhand, police said Saturday.

According to police, Maoist rebels abducted three villagers from Chando village in Palamau district, around 190 km from here, Friday night and took them to the nearby forest.

The bodies of two people were found Saturday morning. The third abducted person is yet to be found.

According to police, the Maoists killed the villagers after terming them police informers.

Five arrested for lynching youth in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, October 24: Five people have been arrested here for lynching a youth on suspicion of theft, police said Saturday.

Manoj Prusty, 27, was caught by the residents of Turiput slum in Mancheswar industrial area here early Friday while he was allegedly trying to lift a cycle from the locality.

“The residents tied Manoj and beat him for several hours after which he succumbed to his injuries,” Manoj’s mother Jhumar Prusty told IANS.

Police Inspector Bishnu Charan Mishra said: “We have registered a murder case and detained five people from the slum.”

Businessman looted of gold jewellery worth 10 lakh

Bijnor, October 24: A businessman dealing in gold ornaments was robbed of jewellery worth Rs 10 lakh by three motorcycle-borne youths here, who threw chilli powder in to his eyes, police said today.

Narendra Singh, a resident of Amritsar was on a business trip here yesterday, when he was looted.

The robbers threw chilli powder into his eyes, snatched his bag of jewellery and escaped, they said.

The registration number of the motorcycle was noted by the locals, SP Raj Kumar said, adding investigation in the case is on.

Dinakaran mum on controversy

New Delhi, October 24: Karnataka High Court Chief Justice P D Dinakaran, whose elevation as a judge of the Supreme Court has hit a road block, today preferred to maintain silence over allegations of land grabbing against him.

“Silence is my only strength,” he told PTI when asked on the sidelines of a conference here.

Justice Dinakaran refused to be drawn into any comment relating to the issue.

Asked about the charges against him and whether they were baseless, he refused to reply. “I will not say anything,” he said.

Meat found inside mosque, tension in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, October 24: Tension gripped Uttar Pradesh’s Shravasti district Friday morning when a group of Muslims, after finding pieces of meat lying inside a mosque, attacked public vehicles, according to police.

The group blockaded the busy Shravasti-Bahraich route for hours and even tried to torch some buses and trucks in various parts of the district, 230 km from Lucknow, police said. However, no one was injured.

14-year-old raped, killed in Uttar Pradesh; two held

Lucknow, October 23:A 14-year-old Dalit girl was gang raped and killed in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district. The two men involved in the crime have been arrested, police said Friday.

The incident took place Thursday evening in Shahpur village of Muzaffarnagar, about 350 km from Lucknow.

“Two friends Salim and Kalim – both residents of Shahpur village – abducted the girl while she was returning from the fields and raped her at a secluded place. Later, they strangulated the girl to death,” Deputy Superintendent of Police S.K. Shukla told IANS.

Cops clueless after Goa blast, opposition seeks CBI probe

Panaji, October 23: With police continuing to grope in the dark a week after the low-intensity blast pre-Diwali blast in Goa, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Manohar Parrikar Friday said time was running out for the “incapable” cops and called for a CBI probe.

The leader of opposition met Governor S.S. Sidhu Friday to formally seek a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the blast, which killed two persons. He told reporters that the improvised explosive device (IED) blast could have multi-state ramifications.

Singapore man gets 18 years in jail for raping daughter

Singapore, October 23: A Singapore court Friday sentenced a man to 18 years in jail for raping his teenage daughter, a media report said.

The 38-year-old hawker, who was not named to protect his victim’s identity, will also be given 24 strokes of the cane.

The man raped and assaulted his now 14-year-old daughter several times in her bedroom last summer, the online edition of Straits Times newspaper reported.

The crimes came to light in July this year after the girl expressed her disgust with what her father had done to her in a note written during school classes.

Lawyer arrested for supplying drugs to undertrials

Badaun, October 23: Police today arrested a lawyer while he was allegedly trying to supply narcotic substance to an undertrial, who were being brought to the district court for hearing.

Acting on a tip off that a lawyer was supplying drugs to undertrials at the court premises and in the jail here, police caught one Abdul Muktbil red-handed with narcotics, Superintendent of Police, Tarun Gaba said.

During interrogation, the lawyer said he had come to meet an undertrial Salim, Gaba said.

An FIR has been registered against Muktbil, who was sent to jail, he said.
