11 suspected Maoists arrested in Bihar

Patna, November 02: Eleven suspected Maoist guerrillas, including one prime accused in the Jehanabad jailbreak, were arrested in Bihar’s Gaya district during combing operations early Monday, police said.

Police arrested the 11 rebels, including Sanjay Yadav who was allegedly involved in Jehanabad jailbreak in November 2005, from a village under Atri police station in Gaya, about 100 km from here.

‘We arrested these suspected Maoists who were gathered in the village. Their identities are being verified,’ a police officer said.

Roof collapses in Lucknow, 15 hurt

Lucknow, November 01: Fifteen labourers were injured when the roof of an under-construction building caved in in Chinhat industrial area here this evening, police said.

The roof of a showroom, which was under construction, gave way trapping 15 labourers, Additional Superintendent of Police Paresh Pandey told.

All of them were pulled out from the debris and rushed to nearby Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, he said.

Two were discharged after treatment while the rest were still hospitalised, the Additional SP said adding an FIR would be filed against the building contractor soon.

Rs 400 cr hawala transactions: Income tax dept claimed evidence against Koda found

New Delhi, November 01: Income tax department claimed that it has found evidence of Rs 400 crore hawala transactions linked to former Jharkhand CM Madhu Koda, according to TV reports say.

The department had claimed on Saturday that its had found evidence of Koda’s hawala transaction and investments after searches were conducted at Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Lucknow, Nasik, Ranchi, Chaibasa and Jamshedpur.

IT authorities added the department will also initiate the unlocking of seized lockers at various places of the former Chief Minister and his associates.

Woman acquitted of pushing girl into flesh trade

New Delhi, November 01: A woman owner of a Delhi-based placement agency, which provides domestic helps, was acquitted of charges of procuring and pushing a girl into flesh trade by a court here which termed her statements as “unreliable”.

“In view of serious contradictions in the testimony of the prosecutrix and statement failing to inspire confidence, it is difficult to accept and believe it to base conviction of the accused,” Additional Sessions Judge J R Aryan said.

Tour guide assaults British girl in capital

New Delhi, November 01: Police have arrested a tourist guide for allegedly trying to sexually assault a 14-year-old British national in the capital.

“The girl was a minor and part of a group visiting India. She was staying in Kapasheda in Delhi with 29 British nationals,” said a police official, adding that the accused was arrested on Friday after the victim gave her statement in front of the metropolitan magistrate.

Goa police arrests two in Margao blast case

Panaji, October 31: Two persons were arrested on Saturday in connection with the blast in which two members of a right-wing Hindu group were killed in the commercial town of Margao in Goa on October 16.

“We have arrested two persons in connection with the blast. Both are locals,” Deputy Inspector General of Police Ravindra Yadav said in Panaji.

However, the official did not reveal the names of those arrested. Police sources said that the arrests were made on basis of clues received from the mobile phone used by Malgonda Patil, one of the two victims who was later named an accused.

Lady Hardinge nursing student commits suicide

New Delhi, October 31: Snubbed by her boyfriend, a 21-year-old nursing student of the Lady Hardinge Medical College Saturday committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan of her hostel room, police said.
The victim, identified as Mercedes Kohmdram, from Manipur, hanged herself in her hostel room at around 8.30 a.m. She was a third year student and stayed alone in the room.

Families of Sikh riot victims protest outside court

New Delhi, October 31: Demanding justice, some families of the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots Saturday protested outside the Karkardooma court here, which was hearing a case related to the savagery in the capital 25 years ago.

“It has been 25 years since the riots took place. If the government wants, we can easily get justice. But the government itself does not want to support the cause,” said Baburam Dukhiya, who runs an organisation for riot victims in Tilak Vihar.

Maoists kill CPI-M activist in West Bengal

Kolkata, October 31: A Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activist was shot dead by a group of suspected Maoist guerrillas in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district Saturday evening, police said.

Madhab Mudi was killed near Belpahari area in the district “when he was working in a farm”, West Midnapore Superintendent of Police Manoj Verma told IANS.

“We have started an investigation,” Verma said.

Mudi was a CPI-M activist and was actively involved in the anti-Maoist committee which was formed to counter Left wing extremism in the region.

Senior railway officer held for corruption in Lucknow

Lucknow, October 31: A senior officer of the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on charges of corruption here Saturday, officials said.

K.M. Tripathi, currently posted as a regional manager of the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) in Lucknow, was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs.70,000 from a contractor.

Simultaneous raids at his residence unearthed cash of about Rs.35 lakh and jewellery worth at least Rs.40 lakh, a CBI source said here Saturday evening.

Two Sanatan Sanstha members arrested in Goa blast case

Panaji, October 31: Two more Sanatan Sanstha associates, including an MBA, were arrested in Goa Saturday in connection with the Diwali eve blast in Margao in which two members of the Hindu group were killed while carrying a bomb, police said.

Police did not rule out the possibility of more arrests and the involvement of a mastermind behind the Goa blast Oct 16.

Husband jailed for manslaughter of wife

London, October 31: A man who stabbed his wife more than 30 times after she admitted to an affair has been jailed for nine years.

Alisdair Sinclair, 48, was cleared of murder, but convicted of manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility at Winchester Crown Court.

Sally Sinclair, 40, an executive at Nokia, was killed by her “controlling” husband at their home in Amport, Hampshire on 16 August last year.

Teenaged boy killed in mishap

Lucknow, October 31: A teenaged boy was killed while his teenaged sister suffered severe injuries when their bicycle was hit by a speeding truck in cantonment police area here, police said today.

The incident took place when 19-year-old Anuj was returning after picking his sister Kajal from Army Public School yesterday.

Two arrested for Goa blast

Panaji, October 31: Two people hailing from Karnataka were arrested in Goa Saturday in connection with the Diwali eve blast in Margao in which two members of the Hindu group Sanatan Sanstha were killed while carrying a bomb, police said.

Deputy Inspector General of Police R.S. Yadav, reading out a statement at the police headquarters here, said Vinay Talekar, 30, hailing from Karwar, and Vinayak Patil, 27, had been arrested in Margao.

Domestic violence a blot on Bangalore

62-year-old woman found murdered in Delhi home

New Delhi, October 30: A 62-year-old woman was Friday evening found allegedly murdered in her Delhi home, police said.

The woman, identified as Virender Kaur, was found strangulated in her third-floor house in East Patel Nagar when her husband Amarjeet Singh returned home.

“The entry into the house seems to be friendly and nothing appears to be missing from the house. We have sent the body for post-mortem examination and are investigating,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Jaspal Singh.

Tension after Maoists kill RSS leader in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, October 30: Tension was reported in Chhattisgarh’s restive Dantewada district Friday after Maoist militants killed a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader and two of his relatives, police said.

“Guerrillas stormed into a village in Kikirpal under Sukma block and butchered three middle-aged people with sharp edged weapons,” S.L. Baghel, Dantewada’s additional superintendent of police, told IANS.

The attack site is about 450 km south of the state capital Raipur.

Four killed in road mishap

Hisar (Haryana), October 30: Four persons were killed and one seriously injured when a truck and a mini-truck collided on the Hisar-Balsamand road here today.

Police said the victims hailing from Rejri village in Churu district of Rajasthan, were coming towards Hisar in a mini-truck.

When the vehicle reached near Chandan Nagar, it collided with a truck coming from the other side, killing all four on the spot, police said.

The bodies have been handed over to their relatives after conducting post-mortem in civil hospital here.

Muthoot family seeks CBI probe into scion’s murder

Kochi, October 30: M.G. George Muthoot, father of Paul M. George who was found killed under suspicious circumstances near Alappuzha in August, Friday approached the Kerala High Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the killing.

The court is expected to take up the petition in the coming days.

George, 32, was killed Aug 21 while travelling in a car with Om Prakash and Rajesh, both of whom have criminal records.

One killed, another injured in bear attack

Srinagar, October 30: An elderly man was killed and another seriously injured when a wild bear attacked them in Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

The bear attacked Jaleel Ahmad Dar and Ghulam Rasool outside their houses in village Ladipora in Sumbal, 26 kms from here, last evening.

Police said the injured were shifted to hospital where Dar succumbed to injuries.

Soon after the incident, people took to the streets and staged a demonstration against the wildlife department for its failure to check the frequent attacks by wild bears.

Girl injured as service rifle of jawan goes off

Srinagar, October 30: A 10-year-old girl was injured, when the service rifle of a security jawan went off accidentally in Baramulla district today, official sources said.

Ruqai was hit by a bullet in her left hand, while she was standing outside her house at Khanpora village, 55 kms from here on Srinagar-Uri highway, sources said.

They said that preliminary investigations revealed that the bullet went off from the service rifle of a security jawan travelling from Baramulla to Sheeri.

High-level committee to probe IOC fire

Jaipur, October 30: A high-level committee of the Petroleum Ministry will probe the causes behind the fire at the IOC fuel facility on the outskirts of the city and suggest future safety measures at oil and gas depots.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said this after talks with Petroleum Minister Murli Deora, who arrived here to take stock of the situation arising out of the blaze raging for over 16 hours.

He said Deora announced an exgratia of Rs.10 lakh to next of the kin of the deceased and Rs. two lakh to those injured in the incident.

Fire rages in Indian Oil depot in Rajasthan, nine dead

Jaipur, October 30: The fire at the Indian Oil depot here continued to rage Friday morning, a day after it broke out, with six people still trapped and officials saying nine people could have been killed and nearly 150 injured.

The blaze, which broke out at 7.15 p.m. following a minor earthquake, has engulfed the nearby Agro food centre and a power grid. The fire, at the Sitapur industrial area near Jaipur, was of great intensity and the flames could be seen from a distance of over 15 km.

Two dead in oil depot blaze

Jaipur, October 29: A Massive fire erupted at an oil depot in northern India overnight, killing at least two people and injuring scores more, officials and emergency workers said.

The blaze at the Indian Oil depot on the outskirts of Jaipur in the desert state of Rajasthan broke out about 7.30pm (1am AEDT, Friday) and swiftly spread out of control.

Emergency service officials said at least two people had been killed, while Jaipur’s chief civil administrator, Kiran Soni Gupta, said more than 50 had been rushed to hospital, some with severe burns.

Two male prostitutes held in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, October 29: Hyderabad police Thursday arrested two male prostitutes who were running a massage centre in the city.

Police said Prabhu Kumar, 35, and Kumar Chandra Rana, 26, were arrested when they were “enticing” women near Hyderabad Central shopping mall.

The sleuths of the Commissioner’s Task Force Central Zone, Hyderabad arrested the duo who were running a massage centre and operating a male prostitution business, said a statement from the police commissioner’s office.
