Infiltration bid foiled, three militants killed

Srinagar, November 03: Army foiled an infiltration bid this morning by killing three militants in Kupwara district of North Kashmir.

Troops noticed some suspicious movement in Tangdhar, 170 kms from here, and challenged a group of militants who were trying to infiltrate, a defence spokesman said.

They were asked to surrender but they opened fire. In retaliatory action, three militants were killed, he said.

While one miliant was shot dead in the wee hours, two others were gunned down later.

The operation in the area was still going on when last reports came in.

TC blockades street in Kolkata over Birbhum clashes

Kolkata, November 03: The clashes between the CPI-M and Trinamool Congress supporters at Nanoor in West Bengal’s Birbhum district had a spillover effect in the metropolis today with TC activists blocking an arterial road in Esplanade area in protest.

Traffic was stalled on Dharamtolla Street for three hours as police moved in and arrested some Trinamool supporters.

TC general secretary Madan Mitra alleged that the police lathicharged supporters near Bentinck Street adjacent to Dharamtolla Street.

Seven years RI for rape accused

Jaunpur, November 03: A court here today sentenced a man to seven years rigorous imprisonment for raping a girl, and slapped a penalty of Rs 25,000 on him.

Pronouncing the judgement, Additional Sessions Judge VIII S P Mishra also sentenced the accused to three years RI and a fine of Rs 1,000 on charges of issuing threat.

According to the prosecution, Sahabuddin raped a girl in Biswan village on February 17, 2006. He was later arrested and a chargesheet was filed against him.

After hearing both the parties, the court held Sahabuddin guilty.

Man acquitted of charge of killing wife

New Delhi, November 03: A man, accused of killing his wife by beating and inflicting several scissor blows in 2004, has been acquitted by a Delhi court giving him the benefit of doubt and saying the chain of events in the case was not complete.

“The chain of incriminating circumstances cannot be said to have been complete to hold that the charges were proved against accused Anil Kumar,” Additional Sessions Judge J R Aryan said.

Youth arrested for Kidnap

New Delhi, November 03: An unemployed youth, who was evading police in a kidnapping case in Delhi, was arrested from Bihar when he came out of his hideout for celebrating Chhat Puja, police said today.

Subhash Kumar (28), a resident of Sheohar district in Bihar, was arrested recently from the district with the assistance of Bihar Police when he came out of his hideout for celebrating the festival, they said.

Kumar along with his associates had kidnapped Anurag (7) from Anand Parbat last year.

Two other accused in the case — Raju and Vikas — were earlier arrested.

10-year-old stripped naked, chained and dragged for theft

Lucknow, November 03: A 10-year-old boy was assaulted, stripped naked, chained and then dragged for several metres by a group of shopkeepers in an Uttar Pradesh village on charges of stealing Rs.20, police said today.

The inhumane treatment was meted out to Sainki, a resident of Dayanand Sagar village in Muzaffarnagar district, about 350 km from state capital Lucknow, police said.

Ajmer Shatabdi runs down four, passengers stranded

Gurgaon, November 03: Four people were run over by a train near this suburban city early today leading to angry protests that saw hundreds of passengers aboard the New Delhi-Ajmer Shatabdi Express being stranded.

The incident took place in Pataudi, 26 km from this satellite town in Haryana, at about 7.30 a.m., railway officials said. “Four people were run over by the New Delhi-Ajmer Shatabdi express this morning when they were illegally crossing the railway tracks in Pataudi. The accident happened at 7.30 a.m.,” Anant Swarup, spokesperson of the Northern Railways, told the media.

Dal Khalsa activists stop trains in Amritsar

Amritsar, November 03: Dal Khalsa activists stopped trains at the Amritsar Railway station Tuesday following a call for a strike across Punjab. The radical activists are demanding justice for the thousands of victims who were killed in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi and other places.

The Amritsar-New Delhi Shatabdi Express, Jan Shatabdi Express, Sachkhand Express, Dadar Express, Super Express and the Deluxe train were stopped by Dal Khalsa activists at the railway station here.

Scores of activists squatted on the rail tracks and blocked trains from moving out.

Two injured in grenade attack at shrine in Baramulla

Srinagar, November 02: Suspected militants hurled a grenade at a shrine in Baramulla district this evening, injuring two persons, police said.

The grenade was hurled at the devotees visiting the shrine at Athasan Mohalla near Palhullan, 40 kms from here, police said adding two vendors were injured in the attack.

No militant organisation has owned responsibility for the attack, the police said.

Abducted doctors freed in Bihar

Samastipur/Begusarai (Bihar), November 02: Two doctors who were abducted from neighbouring Samastipur was freed today in Bihar’s Begusarai district.

Dr A K Sahay, Orthopaedic surgeon, and Dr Santosh Kumar Sahni, physician, were abducted yesterday, the police said.

The unknown abductors also stabbed and injured Dr Sahay who was admitted to a hospital, they said.

A group of three gunmen kidnapped Sahay and Sahni when they were on the way to Muzaffarpur on a motorcycle, Samastipur SP Ajitabh Kumar said.

Raids continue at Jharkhand ex-CM’s properties

Ranchi, November 02: Income Tax raids on properties of Jharkhand’s former chief minister Madhu Koda in connection with alleged hawala transactions and illegal investments, continued for the third day today.

“Koda is at his residence here and raids and questioning are continuing,” a senior IT official told PTI.

He refused to comment whether Income Tax department would move Interpol to facilitate investigation into alleged hawala transactions in the wake of the department claiming of unearthing documents that suggested he had allegedly sent Rs 560 crore abroad.

‘Witchcrafts’ killed in Jharkhand village

Chaibasa (Jharkhand), November 02: Three members of a tribal family were killed for allegedly practising witchcrafts in West Singhbhum district, making it the second such incident in the last four months.

The bodies of Gura Balmuchu (50) and his two wives — Nanika (45) and Radi Kui (40) — who were practising black magics, were found in their house at Padapahar village in a jungle, police said.

Four months ago, a woman and her two children were killed in similar circumstances and their bodies dumped in a well in the village.

No one was arrested in this connection, police said.

Weapon supply racket busted, 14 guns recovered

New Delhi, November 02: A 26-year-old resident of Bihar has been arrested for illegally selling guns and ammunition in the national capital, police said Monday.

Sleuths of Delhi Police’s Crime Branch arrested Manish Kumar from Rohini Sector-24 last month and recovered 12 pistols from him. Two revolvers and 86 rounds of ammunition were recovered later during the raids at his hideouts.

The police said the weapons were manufactured indiegenously in and around Munger district in Bihar.

Motive behind Goa blast still unclear, say police

Panaji, November 02: The motive behind the Diwali-eve blast in Goa is still not clear more than a fortnight after two associates of the rightwing Hindu outfit Sanatan Sanstha (SS) were killed in the explosion while ferrying a bomb, a senior police official said.

Speaking to reporters in Panaji Monday evening, Superintendent of Police (CID) Atmaram Deshpande said that the police were still trying to figure out why Malgonda Patil and Yogesh Naik, both SS associates, carried out the blast in a crowded area in Margao, a major town in South Goa, 35 km from here.

BSF arrest Pakistani intruder from Kutch border

Ahmedabad, November 02: The Border Security Force has apprehended a Pakistani national trying to sneak into India across Kutch border, BSF officials said here today.

The intruder had tried to intrude from Vighakhot border of Kutch yesterday but he was apprehended by BSF personnel and taken to joint interrogation centre (JIC) in Bhuj, the officials said.

BSF had last week seized a Pakistani boat which had intruded into Indian waters near Sir Creek area of Kutch last Friday but its occupants managed to escape.

One killed in Jaipur, smoke suspected to be the cause

Jaipur, November 02: A resident of Vatika town nearly seven kms from the IOC fuel depot today died in SMS hospital here after he allegedly complained of suffocation.

Family members of the deceased Yashoda Nandan (around 38 years) claimed that he developed respiratory disorders due to smoke, which had spread over a number of villages near Sitapura area after the devastating fire on Thursday last, and died in the hospital.

However, the hospital administration has so far not confirmed whether suffocation was the exact cause.

Five SIMI activist remanded for two more days

Indore, November 02: A local court here today extended the police remand of five SIMI activists, including the two wanted in connection with Ahmedabad bomb blasts by two more days following a plea of the police department.

Allowing the police application, Judicial Magistrate First Class D K Singh granted custody of Mohammed Shafiq, Mohammed Yunus, Sheikh Sajid, Arshad Khan and Firoz Khan for two more days.

Man intervenes in scuffle; killed

New Delhi, November 02: A 32-year-old man had to pay with his life when he intervened in a scuffle between two groups of youngsters following which one of them allegedly stabbed him in south-east Delhi, police said today.

The incident was reported from Taimur Nagar in New Friends Colony police station area late last night and the victim has been identified as Govardhan, who works in a dairy in the area.

Govardhan intervened in a fight between four men, who were under the influence of alcohol, outside a dairy owned by one Zile Singh where he was working for the past 15 years.

Woman, grandchild die in building collapse

New Delhi, November 02: A woman and her grandson were killed when an under-construction building collapsed in west Delhi while they were on way to a market, police said today.

The three-storeyed building collapsed in Guru Nanak Dev Nagar locality in west Delhi last evening in which three persons were also injured and police have arrested the contractor Harpreet Singh.

Girl attempts suicide in Jammu and Kashmir over sim card

Srinagar, November 02: A girl in a north Kashmir village on Sunday allegedly attempted suicide after learning that her pre-paid sim card was not functioning, residents of the village claimed.

According to villagers, Taslima, 23, living in Chattergul village in Ganderbal district, consumed some poisonous substance and had be taken to the hospital in critical condition after she learnt that her pre-paid mobile phone would not function any longer.

Woman gets life sentence for killing husband

Mumbai, November 02: A sessions court has sentenced a 21-year-old woman to life imprisonment for killing her husband out of her extra-marital affair.

Jyoti Malusare was accused of killing Vijay, her husband, by giving him sleeping pills.

As per the prosecution, Jyoti and Vijay got married on May 9, 2007 and were living in suburban Ghatkopar with Vijay’s parents.

A month after their wedding, on June 14, 2007, Jyoti gave Vijay a glass of milk at night. Next morning she raised alarm, saying that Vijay was not waking up. He was taken to hospital, but was declared dead.

Three snatchers lynched in Bengal

Baruipur (WB), November 02: Three persons, allegedly trying to snatch a bag of money from a passenger, were beaten to death today by locals and co-passengers here in South 24 Parganas district, police said.

A group of five persons allegedly tried to snatch a bag of money from a businessman travelling on a trekker in Gopalnagar area, after which the locals and co-passengers beat to death two of them on the spot.

One of them died on his way to the hospital, while one has been admitted to a local hospital here, police said, adding that one of their accomplice managed to flee.

Youth kills parents in a fit of rage

Guwahati, November 02: Apparently upset over a quarrel with his parents, a youth today allegedly killed them in a fit of rage in Assam’s Nagaon district, police said.

Paban Nath, a resident of No 2 Kaki Moinapur village, beheaded his mother Padumi Devi and attacked his father Jadav Nath with an axe killing both of them on the spot.

He tried to escape after the deed but the locals captured and handed him over to the police, they added.

The youth later confessed to the police that he had killed his parents in a fit of rage following a quarrel.
