Son shoots, sets ablaze father over land in Greater Noida

Greater Noida, November 08: Angered over his father’s refusal to hand over his entire property to him, a man shot him twice and when that did not prove fatal, poured kerosene over him and burnt him alive in a village here Saturday, police said Sunday.

According to police, Mangat Kumar, 80, of Kiswana village under Dankore area of Greater Noida, had transferred his agricultural land in the village to his three sons equally some time back.

However, his eldest son, Ramesh, 35, opposed the decision and wanted the entire land to be made over to him.

Maoists kill several policemen in West Bengal

Kolkata, November 08: Several policemen were killed in an ambush by Maoist rebels at Gidhni in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district Sunday, police said. The actual toll in the incident is not yet confirmed.

“There was an attack on a police team by the Maoists. There are reports that several of our men are dead. But we cannot confirm the exact toll now,” West Midnapore district magistrate Narayan Swarup Nigam told IANS over phone.

Man arrested for cheating people in property deals

New Delhi, November 08: A man was today arrested by Delhi police in connection with cheating people through property deals.

Jodge Chawla, 48, a resident of Rajinder Nagar in Central Delhi, was booked under various provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, police said.

He used to project himself as owner of certain properties and sell them by preparing forged documents, they said.

Husband sets wife on fire

Varanasi, November 08: A 25-year-old woman sustained serious burn injuries after her husband allegedly set her on fire at a village in Chandauli district.

The woman was admitted to Shiv Prasad Gupt divisional hospital here yesterday.

Police said that Soni, a native of Imliya area of Chandauli district, was married to Rakesh in 1998.

They have three children.

Rakesh was unemployed and addicted to liquor. Yesterday he had a tiff with his wife when she refused to give him money for liquor.

In a fit of anger Rakesh set her on fire after pouring kerosene on her.

FIR registered against 28 persons

Azamgarh, November 08: An FIR was registered against 28 persons including 26 women for allegedly taking pension meant for widows, police said.

The FIR was lodged against village head, village panchayat officers and 26 women of village Rasulpur in Bilariyaganj block, they said adding that the matter came to light during district wise verification drive launched on directives of District Magistrate.

It is alleged that these women took widow pension by forging their documents with the help of village head and panchayat officer.

Police is investigating the matter.

Seven passengers of Dadar-Guwahati Express robbed

Jabalpur, November 08: Seven passengers have been robbed of their cash and valuables after being drugged on board the Dadar-Guwahati Express near Itarsi station of West Central Railways, Government Railway Police (GRP) said today.

The passengers from Kishanganj in Bihar, who fell unconscious after they took some food-stuff laced with drugs from strangers last night, were rushed to the district hospital when Dadar-Guwahati Express (No 5645) reached here, the GRP said.

5 employees working on tracks run over by train

New Delhi, November 08: Just three days after six gangmen and six others were run over by trains in two different incidents at Pataudi and Ballabhgarh, four gangmen and a section engineer were run over by the Dehradun-New Delhi Jan Shatabdi on Saturday morning at Ghaziabad.

Section engineer Ramesh Kumar and the four gangmen, Ram Ratan, Puran, Ajay and Radheshyam were working on the tracks between Ghaziabad and Sahibabad stations when around 11.15 am the New Delhi-bound Jan Shatabdi, ignoring the flag indicating men at work, ran over the them.

16 killed in Nepal as bus falls from mountain

Kathmandu, November 08: At least 16 people were killed and more than two dozen injured Sunday when a passenger bus plunged off a mountain highway in western Nepal, police said.

The bus fell about 250 metres off the narrow highway in the Arghakhanchi district, about 350 kilometres west of Kathmandu.

Police said most of the victims died after being crushed inside the mangled remains of the bus.

Police officer Radhe Shyam Singh said 25 people were injured in the accident and half of them were in serious condition.

Three commit suicide

Vijayawada, November 08: A woman and her two daughters allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticides at Vuyyuru town in Krishna District last night.

Police said the deceased were identified as B Venkateswarai (43), her daughters Sukanya (24) and Bhanusri (22). According to the parents of Venkateswarai, they took the extreme step due to alleged harassment by her husband.

The bodies were sent to Government Hospital, Vuyyur.

Himachal police officer found shot dead

Shimla, November 08: A senior police officer was found shot dead early Sunday at his residence here. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

Inspector General of Police (Railway and Traffic) Jagjit Kumar, 57, was found lying in a pool of blood at his house, Shimla Superintendent of Police R.M. Sharma told IANS.

‘It seems to be a case of suicide. His service revolver was found lying next to his body. Preliminary investigations indicate that the death took place between 1 a.m. and 1.30 a.m. His family came to know about the incident around 3 a.m.,’ he said.

Two killed in Agra accident

Agra, November 07: Two men were killed and another critically injured when a speeding milk tanker hit their scooter here Saturday, police said.
The accident occurred in the morning near the TDI Mall, close to the Taj Mahal, police said.

The deceased have been identified as Haider and Shah Rukh, while the third man on the scooter Munnu was rushed to the hospital, where his condition was stated to be critical, police added.

A bystander was also injured in the accident, but was discharged from the hospital after treatment, police said.

Three arrested for beating two Naga students

New Delhi, November 07: After Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit personally intervened in the matter, three people have been arrested by Delhi Police for allegedly beating two Naga students in the Kotla Mubarakpur area.

An official statement from the chief minister’s office said Saturday: “Delhi chief minister’s office has been informed that the Delhi Police has arrested three youths in connection with beating of two Naga students on Nov 5, 2009.”

Two trains run over five in Ghaziabad

Ghaziabad, November 07: Five railway employees working on tracks in this town adjacent to the national capital were killed Saturday after being run over by two trains including the Dehradun-Delhi Jan Shatabdi Express, an official said.

The accident occurred at around 11.10 a.m. Saturday. “They were doing maintenance work on the tracks,” Anant Swarup, chief public relations officer of Northern Railways, told IANS.

Eighty kg silver seized at Varanasi

Varanasi, November 07: Over 79 kg of silver was seized by the railway police from a coach, railway officials said here today.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) recovered the silver from a parcel van of Shiva Ganga Express yesterday, they said, adding the parcel was booked in the name of Santosh from Varanasi who did not come to receive it.

GRP Kanpur had already informed their counterparts in Varanasi about the parcel which was seized as soon as the train arrived here, they said.

The parcel would be handed over to sales tax department, they added.

Acid thrown at 13-year-old girl

Sonepat, November 07: A 13-year-old girl sustained burn injuries when a youth threw acid at her while she was returning to her home here, police said.

The victim, a Class VII student at Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Gohana, was returning back home after her classes yesterday when Sajjan alias Meenu (14) allegedly threw acid at her, they said.

The girl was immediately rushed to a local community health centre where she is stated to be out of danger, police said, adding the victim sustained burn injuries on her body.

Seven Delhi students hurt as school van hit by mini truck

New Delhi, Nov 07: Seven students were injured, two of them seriously, when their school van was hit by a mini truck near Kashmere Gate in Delhi on Saturday morning.

The accident took place around 7:30 am when the children of DPS Mathura Road were going to school in the van carrying 12 students, police said.

The seriously injured students have been rushed to Bara Hindu Road Hospital.

Three killed in road accident

Sonepat, November 07: Three members of a family were killed and two others seriously injured when a three-wheeler on which they were travelling was hit by a truck on the Sonepat-Meerut road near Khewra village, about 13-km from here. The incident occurred yesterday, police said, adding the deceased have been identified as Qasim (17), Sohib (6) and Sahibia (2).

Both the injured — Sajjid and Shabib– were immediately rushed to a hospital where their condition was stated to be serious, they said.

18 Kg RDX, Firearms Recovered From West Bengal Forest

Kolkata, November 07: West Bengal Police have recovered a large weapons cache in Bankura state forests. The discovery of the weapons was made before bypolls to 10 seats in the assembly on Saturday.

Police sources said 18 kilos of RDX, three rocket launchers, pistols, and one of the landmines were recovered from the forest area.

The State has been on high alert after the discovery. So far, police have not made any arrests.

Police did not specify whether the arms were for Naxals.

Seven-year-old killed, mother robbed in train

Gondia (Maha) November 07: A seven-year-old boy was killed and his mother robbed off her jewellery in a running train in between Durg and Rajnandgaon railway station today, police said.

The assailants made the victims unconscious after thrusting a chemically sprinkled cloth on them and snatched a gold chain, a ring and a hand bag from Rozy Aslam Gilani (33), resident of Raipur, who was travelling in Bhubneshwar-Kurla Gyaneshwari Superfast Express to Nagpur along with her son Arsh for treatment, they said.

Doctor arrested in dowry case

Jaipur, November 06: A doctor was arrested here today in connection with a dowry harassment case on the basis of a complaint lodged by his doctor wife, police said.

The doctor was posted at a government hospital in Rajasthan’s Churu district, police sources said.

Manoj Kumar Garg was arrested here after an FIR was lodged by his wife Pratibha who married him nine years ago, they said.

Further investigations into the matter are on, they added.

Contraband worth over Rs 17 lakh seized

Motihari (Bihar), November 06: Custom officials today seized ‘charas’ and ‘ganja’ from a truck at Semra village of East Champaran district.

Superintendent of Customs V N Mishra said, on a specific information, a private truck was intercepted at Semara village on NH 28 and the contraband, worth over Rs 17 lakh in international market, was seized.

Panaji, November 06: The joint mock drill conducted by Goa Police and Indian Coast Guard exposed the shortcomings in the system with two decoy terrorists managing to enter the vital installation in the port town of Vasco despite the alert today, officials said.

Two decoy terrorists were planted in the Arabian sea who were to enter Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) at Vasco. The ICG and state police were alerted.
