Five militants of rebel group arrested in Assam

Shillong, November 10: Five militants of a rebel group were arrested by the BSF during an operation in Assam’s Golaghat district early today.

The militants, belonging to the Karbi Longri National Liberation Front (KLNLF), were nabbed at Dolamara, a statement issued by the BSF frontier headquarters here said.

Mahi Ram, Juna Taro, Tarte Rengphar, G B Rengphar and Sar Singhterana hailed from the neighbouring Karbi Anglong district.

Teachers climb on TV tower, threaten to commit suicide

Dehra Dun, November 10: Two contractual school teachers climbed on a Doordarshan tower near the state assembly and threatened today to commit suicide if their demand for regularization of job is not accepted by the government by tomorrow evening.

The primary teachers are agitating for the past one year pressing for regularization of their jobs.

President of Shiksha Acharya Association Puran Singh Rawat is among the two who climbed on the tower and rejected an appeal by the administration to come down.

Mona Suri murder case transferred to another court

New Delhi, November 10:The unsolved murder case of fashion designer Mona Suri was today transferred to a designated court here after the Crime Branch of the Delhi police was asked to probe the matter.

Police earlier told the Delhi High Court that no breakthrough has been achieved in the probe and consequently the matter has been handed over to the Crime Branch on September 24.

Metropolitan Magistrate Munish Markan allowed the plea that the matter be transferred to the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Naveen Arora who hears matters pertaining to the Crime Branch.

Another policeman goes missing in Uttarakhand

Dehradun, November 10: Even as the police is yet to find clues about a Sub-Inspector who went missing, another case of disappearance of a policeman has come to light in Uttarakhand, making it the second such case in a week’s time.

Balakram, a traffic police constable, has been missing since November 7. Balakram did his duty on the day but did not reach his home in the evening.

Efforts are on to trace the whereabouts of the police constable, police said.

Six killed in Tripura militant attack

Agartala, November 10: At least six villagers were killed and another injured by tribal separatists in a daring raid Tuesday in India’s northeastern state of Tripura, officials said.

A police spokesperson said heavily armed militants of the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) attacked Bhandirama village early Tuesday, about 140 km north of state capital Agartala.

The victims were all family members of some NLFT militants who had surrendered before authorities in the past few days.

Landslide Kills 39 In Southern India Landslide Kills 39 In Southern India

New Delhi, November 10: An official says a landslide caused by torrential seasonal rains in a mountainous region in southern India has killed at least 39 people in the last two days.

The official said that the landslide demolished nearly 300 mud huts with tin roof in Ooty and Coonoor region of Tamil Nadu. The area is about 1120 miles (1,800 kilometers) south of New Delhi.

The state flood control official, said rescuers found 14 bodies in the rubble on Monday and 25 Tuesday.

New Delhi, November 10: Child rights activists and cyber law experts have together demanded a ban on Rapelay — a Japanese video game that challenges a player to rape women.

The protesters want cyber laws to be made more stringent to prevent such games from finding their way into the Indian market.

Bowing to pressure, Manu Sharma returns to Tihar Jail

New Delhi, November 10: Manu Sharma, convicted in the Jessica Lall murder case, today returned to Tihar jail before expiry of his parole following mounting criticism that he violated parole norms, prompting Delhi government to ask police to investigate the allegations.

32-year-old Sharma, whose two months of parole was to expire on November 22, reported in the jail at around 11:45 am, a top jail official said.

Teenaged gangraped, three held in JK

Srinagar, November 10: A teenaged was gangraped in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir and three youths have been arrested in this connection so far, police said here today.

The 14-year-old girl, a student of class 8th, was kidnapped yesterday by three youths and was taken to an isolated under-construction house in Ramgali area of Reasi district last evening, they said.

There were four more boys present in the house, they said, adding all the seven gangraped her.

A case was filed by her mother following which the police have arrested three boys.

Andhra, illegal assets of Rs 6 cr, official

Hyderabad, November 09: An Andhra Pradesh Government official was arrested on Monday by Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths in connection with a case related to disproportionate assets worth Rs 6 crore.

Lati Promod Reddy, Assistant Director, Drug Control Administration, has been arrested, an ACB release said here.

Documentary value of the assets is Rs 3 crore, but their current market value is double that amount, the release said.

Chandigarh, November 09: A local court here Monday sentenced to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment a Chandigarh police sub-inspector, convicted of beating to death a youth in custody.

Additional district and sessions judge Raj Rahul Garg also imposed a fine of Rs.20,000 on sub-inspector Narinder Singh.

Anil Kumar, resident of Manimajra town here, was picked up by police for interrogation in July 2007 on suspicion. Police said that Anil Kumar had jumped from the second floor of the police station. He succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

Minorities panel seeks explanation from DIG

Lucknow, November 09: Acting on a complaint by a woman Haj pilgrim who alleged she was forced to pay Rs 2000 to policemen for verification relating to her passport, the Uttar Pradesh Minorities Commission today sought an explanation from a top officer.

State Minorities Commission chairman S M A Kazmi had shot a letter to the DIG, Azamgarh, seeking his explanation on the matter within two weeks.

The woman, in her complaint to the Commission, alleged she was forced to pay Rs 2000 to police for verification with regard to her passport.

Farmers stir turn violent

Raipur, November 09: A protest by farmers demanding bonus on paddy procurement in Chhattisgarh’s Dhamtari district today turned violent as they attacked the police and indulged in arson burning shops and houses.

Mukesh Gupta, Inspector General of Police, Durg told PTI that the farmers had decided to stage state-wide protests demanding bonus on paddy procurement and power at subsidized rate .

Accordingly, over 1,000 farmers staged a road blockade on on the national highway, police said.

Trinamool MP, others injured in stone pelting

Haldia (WB), November 09: Trinamool Congress MP Shubhendu Adhikari and five other party activists sustained minor injuries in stone pelting allegedly by CPI(M) workers during a TC demonstration in front of Haldia police station in East Midnapore district.

Superintendent of Police Bastab Baidya said some people pelted stones at the demonstrators and fled, adding, six persons including Adhikari, MP of Tamluk, suffered minor injuries.

While others were administered first aid at the local hospital and released, Adhikari did not go to hospital, the SP said adding no one was arrested.

Farmer snuffs out his life

Muzzafarnagar(UP), November 09: Apparently upset over inadequate hike in sugarcane prices, a farmer today snuffed out his life by jumping before a running train here today.

Fifty-year-old Vijaypal Tyagi jumped before the train near Mansurpur station on the Delhi-Ambala railway route, eye-witnesses and police said.

The exact reason behind his alleged suicide was yet to be ascertained, police said.

However, BKU activists claimed he was upset over the inadequate hike in prices of sugarcane prices and this led him to take the extreme step.

Businessman robbed of Rs 6 lakh

New Delhi, November 09: A businessman was today robbed of Rs six lakh by four unidentified youths who took away the cash bag after firing at his driver in West Delhi area.

The incident happened around 9.30 am when Satya Prakash was going to his office in Model Town area, police said.

Narrating the incident, police said at Ranapratap Bagh, Prakash got down from his car and walked towards his office in the locality. His driver Keshav was following with a briefcase containing Rs six lakh.

Inter-state gang of robbers busted, four arrested

New Delhi, November 09: Police today claimed to have busted a gang of inter-state robbers by arresting four of its alleged members here in the national capital.

One pistol with a magazine, two knives and two cars were recovered from their possession as they were caught near Rani Kheda More school in Mundka by a raiding team, police said.

The accused were identified as Dinesh (22), Kishan alias Bohly (23), Ajit Singh Dabas alias Bittu (23) and Vikas Dalal.

Case against seven Asaram Bapu workers over deaths

Gandhinagar, November 09: Seventeen months after two students of the Asaram Bapu ashram in Ahmedabad were found dead under mysterious circumstances, the Gujarat police moved to file a case of culpable homicide against seven workers of the ashram.

The case registered by the CID (crime) department in the deaths of Dipesh and Abhishek was filed under section 304 (homicide) and other sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Juvenile Protection Act.

Hindi critic’s death condoled

Aligarh, November 09: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Monday condoled the death of noted Hindi critic and scholar K.P. Singh, who had written a monograph on famous writer Rahi Masoom Raza as well as edited six of his books.

A condolence meeting was presided over by AMU Vice-Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis. Singh, a former chairman of the Hindi department and former Dean of faculty of arts, passed away Sunday after prolonged illness. He was 74.

Singh had authored six books and edited nine books, including six of Raza. He was also editor and co-editor of several Hindi magazines.

Woman tears off part of constable’s ear

Kolkata, November 09: A woman tore off a part of a woman constable’s ear following a scuffle after she was caught for an alleged traffic violation in the city Monday.

Police sources said the woman first had a heated argument with a traffic sergeant after he seized her driving licence for parking her vehicle on the wrong side of the road.

Seeing the commotion, woman constable Tapasi Mandal rushed to the spot and managed to put the woman and her husband – who came to her wife’s aid and argued and scuffled with the sergeant – into a police car.

Rs 1.2 million stolen from Goa multiplex

Panaji, November 09: In a major theft, more than Rs. one million in cash were stolen early Monday morning from three separate safes located within the Inox multiplex here, police said.

According to a complaint registered with the Panaji town police station, nearly Rs.12.5 lakh (Rs.1.25 million), part of the collection made during the weekend, were stolen.

The multiplex is one of the main venues for the forthcoming 40th International Film Festival of India, which is expected to be visited by several dignitaries from Bollywood and political personalities.

Bhagalpur riots accused gets lifer

Bhagalpur (Bihar), November 09: A court here today awarded a life term to Kameshwar Yadav, a prime accused in the Bhagalpur riots of 1989.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Arvind Madhav found Yadav guilty of firing and throwing bombs at 15 year-old Mohammad Qayyum at Assananpur in Bhagalpur on October 24, 1989 that claimed his life.

The judge held Yadav guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code besides Arms Act and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Police seize ‘ashtadhatu’ idol worth over Rs two crore

Allahabad, November 09: Police today claimed to have seized an ‘ashtadhatu’ idol, estimated to be over a century old and worth over Rs 2 crore in the international market with the arrest of two persons in this connection.

The idol, made of an alloy of eight metals and hence called ‘ashtadhatu’, was seized in Tharwai police station area of the district’s trans-Ganga region, about 35 kms from the city.

Proposal to compensate those jailed in petty cases

Mumbai, November 09: The Bombay High Court would soon examine a proposal to compensate those who languish in jail for petty offences.

The High Court is currently hearing a PIL on the overcrowding of jails in Maharashtra.

During an earlier hearing, Advocate Yug Chaudhary, appointed as an amicus curiae (friend of the court), had pointed out that in many cases where the offence is punishable only with fine, people are thrown into jail.
