Four migrant labourers die in Punjabi Bagh fire

New Delhi, Nov 13: A raging fire trapped four young men in the small room they slept and worked in at Rampur, Punjabi Bagh, in the early hours of Thursday.

The room had neither window nor door. For some time, no one knew where the cries came from, till the victims thumped on the burning iron shutter that locked them in. By the time help came, they were dead.

Police probing if Dutchman abused kids

Chennai, Nov 13: The police in Chennai have started a probe into the activities of 56-year-old Dutchman Wilhelmus Weijdeveld, who has been on the Interpol radar for alleged child pornography, to find out if he abused children in Chennai where he was staying for the past few years.

Son of I-T inspector probing Koda wealth assaulted

Jamshedpur, Nov 13: Two unidentified persons on Thursday assaulted the son of an income tax inspector who was one of the officials engaged in the investigation into the hawala scam allegedly involving former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda.

The police said Abhisekh Majhi, son of I-T inspector A K Majhi, was returning home when the duo, apparently waiting for him, attacked him with stones near Chenab Road under Sakchi police station.

Even after Abhishek fell down, they continued to stone him and fled after snatching his mobile phone, the sources said.

Boy run over by bus at Jaunpur

Varanasi, November 12: A 15-year-old boy was run over by a speeding bus coming from Allahabad in Fatehganj Bazar area of neighbouring Jaunpur district, 60 kilometres from here this morning.

Police said that the accident occurred in the wee hours today.

The locals with the family members of the deceased identified as Ajay Kumar Seth, angered over the death, blocked the road demanding arrest of the driver, who escaped from the spot after the accident.

Senior police and administrative officials reached the spot and pacified the crowd and restored the traffic.

Cases of ragging against nine students

Erode (TN) November 12: Cases of ragging have been filed against nine senior students of a private polytechnic college here and the principal of the institute for not taking any action against them.

Police said as per the direction of the Madras High Court, cases were registered yesterday against the students for ragging a junior from Kerala and against the principal of the college at Thookanaickkenpalayam for not taking action.

Abijith’s father had filed a petition in the court a week back, stating that police had not taken any action against the students who ragged his son.

IAS officer sent to judicial custody

Mohali, November 12: Senior Punjab IAS officer Vijay Kumar Janjua, arrested recently while allegedly taking a bribe of Rs two lakh from an industrialist, was today sent to 14 days’ judicial custody by a local court.

Posted as Secretary-cum-Director, Industries and Commerce, Janjua was arrested by vigilance sleuths while he was allegedly accepting Rs 2 lakh as bribe from a Ludhiana-based industrialist in Chandigarh on Monday.

The sub-divisional court remanded him to 14 days’ in judicial custody after the expiry of his two-day custody with the Vigilance Bureau today.

Five injured in police-lawyers clash in Rajasthan

Jaipur, November 12: At least five persons were today injured in a clash between policemen and advocates following a minor altercation, leading to stone pelting on vehicles and public, at the Jaipur Session Court, a senior police official said.

The injured included a sub-inspector, an advocate and a lensmen, IGP (Jaipur Range) B L Soni said.

Furious lawyers, demanding action against one head constable who allegedly indulged in scuffle with advocates, also boycotted their work paralysing the court, IGP said.

10 acquitted in bomb planting case

Coimbatore, November 12: A special court today acquitted ten members of banned Al-Umma in a case relating to planting of explosives in a building here in 1997.

The prosecution case was that the ten activists had planted bombs in Classic Towers near the Government Hospital on November 29, 1997, during a communal flare up in the city.

Delivering the judgement, Judge Ganesan acquitted all the accused holding that the prosecution failed to prove their involvement in the case.

Three labourers killed in roof collapse

Lucknow, November 12: Three labourers were today killed when the roof of an under-construction building collapsed in Gautam Buddha Nagar district.

Tulsa (45), Ramashankar (49) and Gulab Singh (40), all residents of Chhatisgarh, were killed when the roof suddenly collapsed in Jarcha area, official sources said here.

Police was inquiring into the incident.

Four Bihar youths charred to death in Delhi

New Delhi, November 12: Four youths hailing from Bihar were charred to death here when a fire broke out in their house cum workplace early today, fire brigade officials said.

The blaze was reported from a house in Rampura area of west Delhi’s Punjabi Bahg area at around 4:40 am. Two fire tenders were rushed to douse the flames.

Four occupants — Mohd Jaffer (22), Md Ajaz (20), Nazim and Saba Karim (both 19) — were found charred to death by rescue workers, the officials said. They were rushed to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital where they were declared brought dead.

Youth arrested for murdering wife’s ex-husband

New Delhi, November 12: A 22-year-old man was arrested in the national capital for allegedly murdering his wife’s former husband following an altercation, police said today.

Amit, who allegedly murdered Sujeet (28) on November 10 in broad daylight in Munirka area, was arrested yesterday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H G S Dhaliwal said.

Sujeet along with his brother was buying food stuff for goats when he was attacked.

BHU student commits suicide

Lucknow, November 12: A first semester student of law at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree inside the university campus in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi town late Wednesday night, officials said Thursday.

Arun Gupta was found hanging from a tree in the sports ground Thursday morning.

‘A morning walker called me and informed about the incident. It appears that Gupta was depressed and committed suicide,’ J.P. Rai, chief proctor of the BHU, told IANS.

PCPA-sponsored bandh affects normal life in Jhargram

Midnapore (WB), Nov 12: A police van was set on fire at Sapdhara as a 72-hour bandh called by Maoist-backed PCPA in Jhargram sub-division of the district affected normal life today. The People”s Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCPA) started the bandh at 6 am this morning to protest the baton-charge of its supporters by police yesterday.

As the bandh began, PCPA activists set afire a pick-up van of the police near Jhargram town. The bandh affected normal life in Jhargram sub-division with vehicles off the road, shops and markets closed and thin attendance in government offices.

Train driver electrocuted

Burdwan (WB), November 12: The assistant driver of Kamrup Express was electrocuted in a mishap at Katwa railway station yesterday in Burdwan district, GRP sources said.

The accident occurred when P Haldar (45) was checking the water level at about 9 pm. He came in contact with a high tension line, the sources said.

Haldar, a driver of the Howrah division of Eastern Railway, died on the spot.

A spokesman of the Eastern Railway said in Kolkata that the train had to wait for about 1.30 hours on platform no two before a fresh engine was arranged for its onward journey.

Four bodies found near Baraiya railway station

Gaya, Nov 12: Four bodies were found near Baraiya railway station in Bihar”s Gaya district this morning, police said. Police believe the four were murdered and their bodies thrown near the station late last night.

The bodies have been sent for post-morterm.

Four charred to death in fire in Delhi house

New Delhi, Nov 12: Four youths were charred to death when a fire broke out in their house here early this morning, fire brigade officials said. The blaze was reported from a house in Rampura area at around 4:30 am.

Two fire tenders were rushed to douse the flames. Four occupants of the house — Jafir (22), Mohd Ijaz (20), Najeem (19) and Shafa Kareem (19) — were found charred to death by rescue workers, the officials said.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

Gang of robbers busted in Punjab

Rajpura (Punjab), November 11: Punjab police claimed to have busted a gang of robbers with the arrest of seven people in this town Wednesday. Goods worth millions of rupees have been recovered from their possession, officials said.

“We laid a trap following a tip-off from our source. We have recovered 17 cars, including several luxury ones, five laptops, three pistols, 32 mobile phones and 20 alloy-wheels from their possession,” Vikramjit Brar, investigating officer of the case told IANS here Wednesday evening.

Street vendor kills woman for talking to other men

New Delhi, November 11: A street vendor allegedly killed a housewife, with whom he had an affair, for talking to other men, the police said Wednesday.

Dhirender Singh, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was arrested Tuesday for the murder of Samikasha Verma at her Tagore Garden home in west Delhi last week.

Police seized a dagger, blood stained clothes, currency notes, a mobile phone and a bicycle from him.

The police said he sold coconuts near the woman’s house when he came in contact with her.

Arrest warrants served against two aides of ex-cm

Ranchi, November 11: Arrest warrants were today served on two key aides of former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda for defying summons to appear before the Income Tax department in connection with the case of alleged money laundering against them.

“We have served the arrest warrants against Binod Sinha and Sanjay Choudhary and asked to the police to arrest them,” Additional Director (Investigation-IT), Ajit Srivastav, told newsmen here.

One killed, three injured in road accident

Noida, November 11: A speeding bus rammed into a car in Kasna area killing one person and injuring three others late this evening. According to police, the accident took place near Honda Siel factory in which four injured were rushed to Kailash Hospital, where one person, Satte(45) died during treatment.

Three injured Azad Pratap and Sharda suffered injuries and their condition was stated to be stable. Kasna police has seized the bus, while the bus driver was absconding.

Criminal carrying reward of Rs 20,000 arrested

Allahabad, November 11: Police here today claimed to have arrested a criminal wanted in several cases in eastern Uttar Pradesh including those of murder and loot.

Following a tip-off, Special Operations Group of the local police nabbed Arun Chaubey(40) carrying a reward of Rs 20,000 hailing from Ballia district, from Allahabad Railway Junction this afternoon, police said.

Police yet to begin probe into Thapar’s allegation

New Delhi, November 11: Police is yet to begin its probe into allegations by a prominent businessman that he was illegally arrested from a city bar while officials were searching for two people including Manu Sharma, who is a convict in the Jessica Lal murder case.

Following the allegation by Samir Thapar, vice president and managing director of JCT Ltd that he was taken into custody from LAP lounge bar on Saturday illegally, Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal ordered a probe by Crime Branch.

LR’s to be issued in Koda case to five countries

New Delhi, November 11: With the hawala scam of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda turning murkier, Letters Rogatory is likely to be issued to various countries including Switzerland as part of the probe into the alleged multi-crore illegal investments case against him and his associates.

Official sources said the Directorate is currently preparing the necessary paperwork needed to send out the Letters Rogetory (LR) to Indonesia, Thailand, Liberia, UAE and Switzerland to get information on alleged investments including acquisition of properties there by Koda and his partners.
