‘300 arrested in Tibet in 2009; still in detention’

Dharamsala, January 22: Around 300 people, “arbitrarily” arrested in Tibet last year, are still under detention, the Tibetan government-in-exile said here in its report Friday.

“In 2009, some 300 Tibetans were arbitrarily arrested and they are still under detention. Eleven Tibetans were sentenced to life imprisonment,” said Ugen Tenzin, executive director of the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy, in this north Indian hill station.

‘Anti-Maoist operation depends on force availability’

Bhubaneswar, January 22: Orissa government today said the fate of any special anti-Maoist operation in the state would be clear only after five more battalions of the central para-military force (CPMF) arrive.

“Let the five extra battalions of force arrive. Then I think, picture will be clear,” Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik told reporters here after returning back from a meeting convened by Union Home Minister P Chidambaram at Raipur.

Two held in national capital with counterfeit notes

New Delhi, January 22: Two persons have been arrested in the national capital allegedly in possession of counterfeit notes having a face value of Rs 1.35 lakh, as the police today said it suspected the involvement of Pak spy agency ISI.

“We have caught two men with fake currency printed in a neighbouring country with an intention to circulate in Indian market to destabilise the country’s economy,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) H G S Dhaliwal said.

Police, Maoists exchange gunfire in J’khand

Ranchi, January 22: The security forces and Maoists today exchanged gunfire at Jharkhand’s Naxal-affected Latehar district.

“There was an encounter for an hour at Garu area in the district,” DGP Niaz Ahmed told reporters here.

However, no Maoists could be arrested as they managed to flee after the gunfire.

Five members of Dalit family burnt to dead

Lakhimpur Kheri, January 22: A Dalit woman and her four daughters were burnt to death and their charred bodies were found early this morning in Behanganpurwa village, nearly 70 kms from the district headquarters, police said.

The victims were set afire after sprinkling kerosene, Dhaurehra police station in-charge Yogendra Singh said.

One of the daughters was a 23-day-old infant, while others were below the age of eight. Police is investigating the role of Ramanand, the woman”s husband, and have taken him to custody.

Three dead as bus overturns

Barasat(WB), January 22: Three persons were killed and 10 others injured when a bus overturned in North 24 Parganas district today.

The overspeeding bus overturned when the driver applied the brakes suddenly at Tanki road, police said.

The bus was plying between Golaghata and Barasat. The injured have been admitted to Barasat State General Hospital.

The driver of the bus fled after the mishap.

Principal booked for abetting suicide

Trombay, January 22: Police have registered a case of abetting suicide against the principal and a clerk of the Swami Vivekanand School, Trombay, after a Std VIII student of the school committed suicide.

Khalid Abdulla Shaikh, 13, hanged himself in his room at his uncle’s home at Chitah Camp, Trombay, on Wednesday after he was suspended for eight days for beating up a classmate, Akshay Sharma, also 13.

Two commit suicide in Mumbai

Mumbai, January 22: Two persons, including an HIV positive patient, today allegedly committed suicide by hanging themselves here, police said. 27-year-old Jayed Abdul hanged himself at his Khetwadi Gully in G B Marg area in south Mumbai, they said.

He seemed to be upset as his mother died recently, police said adding that his father also died a few years ago. In another incident, an HIV patient hanged himself in a rehabilitation centre at V P road in south Mumbai.

Police suspect that he might have ended his life since he was diagnosed with HIV..

Truck rams into schoolkids, 1 dead, 1 hurt

New Delhi, January 22: Their short walk to school was cut short by death on Thursday morning. Anjali Vishwakarma, 10, was killed by a dumper truck at the Kurar junction of Western Express Highway, while her classmate, Poonam Shukla, is in hospital with several fractures.

The two girls had been in a group of five walking to Rani Sati School from their homes at Pathanwadi. The other three included Manish, 12, Poonam’s elder brother. These three had crossed the highway, with Anjali and Poonam following, when the truck knocked them down.

Gujrat riots:Best bakery convicts want to go gujrat jail

Mumbai, January 21: 8 convicts in the Best bakery case have petitioned the Bombay High Court seeking their transfer from Kolhapur central jail to Gujarat.
The petition filed by them said, “We are far away from our home. Our families are facing financial difficulties because of which they are not able to visit us. It becomes time consuming and expensive for them to visit us in Kolhapur Jail.”

All the eight have been convicted for burning alive 14 people inside Best Bakery in Hanuman Tekdi area of Vadodara during the post-Godhra riots in Gujarat.

Maoists kill Class 11 student, tribal youth

Raipur, January 21: Maoist guerrillas in Chhattisgarh on Thursday killed a student and a tribal young man, suspecting them to be police informers.

“The Class 11 student and the youth, who had applied for the post of special police officer (SPO), were killed with sharp-edged weapons by Maoists. Their bodies were recovered from a roadside under Benur police station in Narayanpur district,” superintendent of police Rahul Bhagat told.

The incident occurred about 320 km south of Raipur.

Pamphlets strewn near the bodies read that the ultras killed the duo as they were ‘police informers’.

Jessica murder case: Manu Sharma questions Bina Ramani’s testimony

New Delhi, January 21: Manu Sharma, serving a life term in Tihar Jail for murdering model Jessica Lall in 1999 on Thursday questioned in the Supreme Court socialite Bina Ramani’s deposition in the murder case.

Appearing for Sharma, senior counsel Ram Jethmalani sought to discredit Ramani’s deposition, during the hearing of a lawsuit challenging his client’s conviction.

Quoting from a trial court’s ruling, Jethmalani told the bench of Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Swatanter Kumar that the lower court had said the “evidence of Bina Ramani is of no help to present case”.

15 policemen injured in clash

Malda (WB), January 21: At least 15 policemen including a Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), were injured when they were attacked by locals in Malda district, a senior police officer said today.

A team, led by the SDPO of Chanchol, went to Sagharia village last night to arrest some miscreants but were attacked by the villagers protesting the police action, Inspector General of Police (North Bengal) K M Tamta told PTI. The police fired in self-defence, the IGP said adding no one was injured in the firing.

Girl hit by school bus door dies

Tambaram, January 21: A five-year-old girl died after she was hit by the school bus door moments after she got down from the vehicle near her house in Alandur on Tuesday evening. S.A. Afrin was a kindergarten student of Unity Matriculation School in Mahalakshmi Nagar, Adambakkam.

On Tuesday, she took the 36-seater school bus home as usual after classes.

After going through several localities in Adambakkam, the bus dropped her at the intersection of Periyapalayathammal Koil Street and Madukkarai Street in Alandur.

Gaurav Mishra, a Class 6 student of City Montessori School (CMS) here whose father runs a construction business in Delhi, was rescued. He had been kidnapped Wednesday by the four men, including the driver employed by his family.

Bomb hoax call puts DPS Ghaziabad on chaos

Ghaziabad, January 21: An anonymous hoax call put the Delhi Public School (DPS) Ghaziabad on chaos Thursday morning when police evacuated the school after receiving fake information of planted bomb in the premises.

The police said that immediately after the call was received at the Police Control Room at about 7.00 a.m., they got the school evacuated and conducted a thorough search. Sniffer dogs and the bomb disposal squad were also pressed into service to screen the entire school building.

Maoist blow up two mobile phone towers in Orissa

Malkangiri (Orissa), January 21: Suspected Maoists blew up two mobile phone towers and ransacked a liquor shop in Orissa”s Malkangiri district early today, police said here.

A large number of ultras stormed K-Guma village under Orkel police station area, about 70 km from here, and triggered explosions in quick succession to blow up the towers, they said.

Kashmir’s Sopore is now a police district

Sopore, January 20: After a string of guerrilla attacks, the state government Wednesday announced a separate police chief for Sopore, upgrading the north Kashmir town and its suburbs to the level of a police district to ensure intensified security of the area.

Sopore town has seen a rise in militant violence and police-protestor clashes in the past two months.

The town has a history of anti-government protests and has seen an upward trend in militancy-related violence in recent days.

Prison fight leaves 23 dead in Mexico

Mexico City, January 20: A fight among inmates left at least 23 dead Wednesday at a jail in the northern Mexican city of Durango, said the Public Security Ministry of the state of the same name.

“The brawl happened in the area of those awaiting trial, and there are 23 confirmed dead,” a ministry spokesman told DPA.

The authorities were investigating the incident, which happened in Durango, about 900 kilometres northwest of Mexico City.

In March, a fight among rival gangs linked to drug cartels left 20 dead at a jail in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez, on the US border.

Kolkata, January 20: Security forces Wednesday arrested three suspected Maoists and claimed to have seized a laptop and headphones used by elusive rebel leader Koteshwar Rao alias Kishanji in West Midnapore district.

Acting on a tip-off that Kishanji had taken shelter in a 20-km jungle between Jitushol and Dumurpota under Kotwali police station, the security forces comprising paramilitary troopers and state policemen conducted a raid and made the arrests and seizures.

Timber smugglers kill forest official in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, January 20: One forest department official was killed and four others were injured by timber smugglers in Orissa’s Nayagarh district, police said today.

The incident took place at Landagirinda forest near Jasodapur village in the district last night when a group of forest officials attempted to prevent a gang of about 40 smugglers from cutting trees inside the forest.

An official, identified as Somnath Behera, was hacked to death by the forest mafia, police said.

Central Excise Superintendent held for bribery

New Delhi, January 20: A Superintendent of the Central Excise Department was arrested by the CBI for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh to close a case investigated by him.

“The complainant, a CEO and Executive Director of a firm dealing in fabrication work, was issued a show-cause notice by the Superintendent, Central Excise, Sonepat charging that the firm is a manufacturing unit. The officer demanded a bribe of Rs 7.5 lakh for closing the case,” a CBI statement said.

It said the Executive Director then lodged a complaint with the CBI.

Man arrested in Delhi for selling fake food coupons

New Delhi, January 20: Delhi Police have arrested a man for allegedly selling fake “meal coupons” and recovered these slips of paper worth around Rs.560,000 from him.

“The accused Rakesh Grover was arrested from near Punjabi Bagh area Tuesday on the basis of a complaint by a company – Sodexo SVC India Private Limited – that someone was selling forged food coupons in its name,” said a senior police officer.
