Rs.32 bn sanctioned to wipe out polio in 3 years

New Delhi, August 20: After missing the deadline by over two years, India, one of the few polio infected countries in the world, will spend Rs.32.04 billion to wipe out the disease from the country in next three years, it was announced here today.

“The main objective is to achieve the goal of zero transmission of polio and obtaining international polio free certification for accomplishment of this goal,” Home Minister P. Chidambaram told reporters after a meeting of the cabinet committee on economic affairs presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Profit booking pulls down Sensex

Mumbai, August 20: Profit-booking pulled down a key index of the Indian equities markets from the day’s highs to end just 1.27 percent above its previous close.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened higher at 14,930.05 points, ended at 14,997.01 points (provisional), up 187.37 points or 1.27 percent.

It slipped in the last 40 minutes or so, after gaining more than 328 points to reach the day’s high of 15,138.31 points.

Bharti and MTN extend exclusive talks to Sept 30

Mumbai, August 20: Bharti Airtel and South Africa’s MTN Group extended until Sept. 30 their exclusive talks aimed at merging their operations to create the world’s third-largest mobile operator.

It was the second extension to the talks, which were first announced in late May. The companies had earlier extended the exclusive talks by a month to Aug. 31.

The companies said in separate but similar statements that discussions continued to progress satisfactorily, though no decision had yet been taken to acquire any shares or implement the potential transaction.

Sensex to bounce back to 20k level: Rel Money

Mumbai, August 20: On the back of strong fundamentals, ample liquidity and calibrated launch of PSU IPOs, Reliance Money is bullish on the Sensex and says it would bounce back to the 20,000 mark by the end of this fiscal.

“The economic fundamentals are strong. India’s growth rate at 6-6.5 per cent is higher than most other economies and hence, it will attract investments. I expect a lot of FII inflows into India. The Sensex should shoot up to 20,000 levels by end-FY 10,” Reliance Money CEO Sudip Bandopadhyay, said in Mumbai.

Sensex soars over 300 points in early trade

Mumbai, August 20: The Bombay Stock Exchange index Sensex surged by over 300 points in early trade today on heavy buying by funds at existing attractive levels following firming global trends. The 30-share index rose by 307.36 points, or 2.07 per cent, to 15,117.00 points with most of the sectoral indices gaining up to 2.25 per cent.

The BSE barometer had lost almost 225 points in the previous session. The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty climbed 82.20 points, or 1.87 per cent, to 4,476.30 points.

2009 CEO of the Year Indra Nooyi

Washington, August 20: Indian-born chairman of PepsiCo Indra Nooyi has added another feather in her cap. The Chief Executive officer of PepsiCo has been adjudged 2009 CEO of the Year.

The Global Supply Chain Leaders Group (GSCLG) has selected the Nooyi for her contributions to socially responsible business practices.

Nooyi’s contribution to raise the one of the most serious problem, climate change, is being appreciated globally.

Stink in Chandigarh, courtesy waste management plant

Chandigarh, August 20: A multi-million rupee solid waste management plant has literally raised a stink in Chandigarh, one of the greenest cities in the country, prompting numerous complaints from residents.

A foul smell emanates from residential areas within an eight-kilometre radius of the municipal corporation plant located in Dadu Majra in Sector 25 (west). Improper implementation of guidelines is being blamed for it.

US stocks climb on oil rally

New York, August 20: US stocks recovered from early losses, buoyed by an oil price rally after a sharp drop in US crude reserves suggested revived demand in the recession-stricken economy.

The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 61.22 points (0.66 per cent) to 9,279.16 in closing trades while the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite climbed 13.32 points (0.68 per cent) to 1,969.24.

The broad-market Standard & Poor’s 500 index added 6.79 points (0.69 per cent) to a provisional close of 996.46.

BSNL employees demand wage hike, go on strike

West Bengal, August 19: Around 270,000 employees of state-run telecom giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) went on strike for two days starting Wednesday, demanding a bigger hike in wages than had been offered.

‘Around 20,000 BSNL engineers and 250,000 group C and D employees have gone on a strike for two days (Aug 19, 20),’ senior member of BSNL Employees Union Dilip Das told IANS.

Altogether nine BSNL unions have gone on strike among which BSNL Employees Union is the largest one. All the nine unions are striking together under a conglomerate body — The United Forum of BSNL Unions.

‘Anil Ambani firm using NTPC to get cheap gas’

New Delhi, August 19: Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP R K Dhawan has cautioned Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde against falling prey to tactics of an Anil Ambani Group firm, which he alleged was using power PSU NTPC as a front to fight Petroleum Ministry.

Dhawan yesterday wrote to Shinde on advertisements issued by Reliance Natural Resources Ltd (RNRL) accusing Oil Ministry of compromising NTPC’s interest in a case on gas pricing with Reliance Industries.

Sensex falls over 200 points on profit-booking

Mumbai, August 19: Paring its early gains, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex fell by over 200 points at 1115 hrs today on profit booking at existing high levels.

The 30-share barometer was quoted at 14,829.82 points, a loss of 205.44 points, or 1.36 per cent, over the previous close. The Sensex had added 61 points in early trade.

The 50-share National Stock Exchange index Nifty fell by 53.45 points to 4,405.45 at the same time.

Oil rises above USD 67 on mixed economic signals

New York, August 18: Oil prices rebounded today with major European and Asian stock markets after a huge sell-off that began the week.

Still, energy prices swung early in the day with so much uncertainty about the pace of an economic recovery.

Benchmark crude for September delivery gained 66 cents to USD 67.41 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Monday, the contract fell 76 cents to settle at USD 66.75, the second consecutive day of declines that dropped the price of crude by 5 per cent.

Centre will ensure no shortage of funds for Mumbai, says Reddy

Mumbai, August 18: The UPA government at the Centre would ensure that there is no shortage of funds for Mumbai’s development, Union Minister for Urban Development Jaipal Reddy said here today.

“The UPA government has always made efforts for Mumbai’s overall development and we will ensure that there is no shortage of funds for Mumbai,” the minister said after the launch of work on Middle Vaitarna Water supply project, at suburban Mulund this evening.

Mumbai would soon get 1450 buses under the MUTP project, the minister said.

Tata Communications, Tyco complete GN-Intra Asia Cable System

Mumbai, August 18: Tata Communications and Tyco Telecommunications today announced that they have completed the installation, testing and commissioning of the TGN-Intra Asia (TGN-IA) Cable System.

Tata Communications is a Tata Group firm, while Tyco Telecommunications is the business arm of Tyco Electronics.

Mittal optimistic about deal with MTN

Chennai, August 18: Sounding optimistic about clinching a deal with South Africa-based mobile telecom giant MTN, Bharti Airtel Chairman Sunil Mittal today said ‘things can always happen at the last minute.’

“These things are always up in the last minute. There is always hope”, Bharti Enterprises Ltd Chairman and Group CEO Sunil Bharti Mittal told reporters here.

He said ‘talks were going on and there is always hope’.

Bharti has entered into exclusive talks with MTN in May this year, for exploring a potential transaction in share-swap and cash deal to create a USD 23 billion entity.

Sensex wipes off some losses, ends 250 pts higher

Mumbai, August 18: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex today surged over 250 points after the market dropped 4.07 per cent yesterday.

The Sensex, which had lost 626.71 in yesterday’s trading, bounced back to end with a gain of 250.34 points at 15,035.26.

The key index touched the day’s high of 15,134.51 and a low of 14,740.26 as trading remained choppy because of funds and general investors adjusting their portfolios.

Similarly, the 50-share National Stock Exchange index Nifty rose 71 points at 4,458.90, after rising to 4,491.45 and touching the day’s low of 4,372.65.

BSNL Union, engineers call strike

New Delhi, August 18: Services of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) across the country are likely to be impacted as major employee unions are calling for a 2-day strike on various demands including wage revision, implementation of promotion policy and absorption of officers on deputation. While the United Forum of BSNL Unions has called a 48-hour strike on August 19-20, the All India Graduate Telecom Officers Association (AIGETOA) with over 10,000 engineers as its members, has called for an indefinite strike.
