New Delhi, August 07: Allaying apprehensions of a food crisis in view of poor monsoon, Minister of Road Transport and Highways Kamal Nath today said the country has enough foodgrain reserves to tackle even the worst monsoon situation.

FM to restart meetings with banks, CMs

New Delhi, August 07: The Centre is mulling to restart the practice of holding consultations with the representatives of banks along with Chief Ministers to discuss issues related to availability of credit for rural areas.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said he was planning to revive the practice of meeting representatives of banks along with chief ministers and finance ministers of states at least once a year to discuss related issues.

He expressed concern over credit-deposit ratio in some states which was not at par with the national level.

Method to make this recipe:

Boil Popatoes and mash them finely.
Add Pepper and salt for taste and keep aside.
Chop the Onions,Tomatoes and Corriander finely and keep it aside.
Place a few Potato chips on a plate.Put a bit of tomato sauce on each chip.
Later place the chopped tomatoes and onions.later place the mashed potato mixture on top of it.
Then pour some yogurt on each chips.

Bollywood debut for Parvathy Omanakuttan

Mumbai, August 07: Parvathy Omanakuttan, the first runner-up at last year’s Miss World Pageant is now planning to enter Bollywood. After a brief spell as a model, the Kerala beauty is planning her Bollywood debut with United-6, which is to be directed by Aryan Singh.

Parvathy will be one among the five newcomers and the film will be shot within 50 days in Bangkok. The shooting is scheduled to start by August end. The music is by Pritam and C.G.Patel and the film is the producer under the banner of White House Productions.

India-S Korea ink market opening pact; trade may double

New Delhi, August 07: India and South Korea on Friday signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement that would enable duty free trade in goods and services between the two countries and help double bilateral trade to USD 20 billion.

Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma and South Korean Trade Minister Kim Jong-hoon signed the agreement in Seoul. This is India’s second comprehensive deal with any country after Singapore.

Economy starts moving slightly: Pranab Mukherjee

New Delhi, August 07: Economy has started moving upward due to two stimulus packages in the last fiscal, but scanty rainfall this year may play a spoilsport, government told the Lok Sabha on Friday.

“The economy has started moving slightly, but still I am not quite sure because other problems may come from adverse impact of scanty rainfall,” Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said during the Question Hour.

Quantum computers more stable than previously thought

Sydney, August 07: Quantum computing, the latest advance on the technology front that is still hedged with many ifs and buts, may be more stable than previously thought, according to the latest research.

Tom Stace, a University of Queensland (UQ) physicist, found that with even 50 percent loss of components, they could still work, unlike conventional computers, which would have broken down.

‘Our results demonstrate that relatively large errors and losses can be tolerated, and so may confirm that quantum computers are genuinely feasible,’ Stace said.

BCCI Working Committee meet on August 13

New Delhi, August 07: The Indian Cricket Board`s all-powerful Working Committee will meet on August 13 in Mumbai.

The Working Committee`s meeting would be preceded by a meeting of the BCCI`s finance committee on August 12. The Finance Committee will discuss the expenditure incurred on organising the Indian Premier League this year.

The Working Committee is expected to clear the spending sheets.

“The Working Committee of the BCCI will meet at 11:00 am on August 13 at the Cricket Centre,” the BCCI said in a statement.

Indian-Australian scientist gives new hope to cancer sufferers

Sydney, August 07: An Australian scientist of Indian origin has developed a new method to send nanocells to cancerous tumours so that tumours that are resistant to other drugs can be destroyed.

After five years of research, Himanshu Brahmbhatt and his partner Jennifer MacDiarmid of EnGeneIcs, the cancer therapeutics company they founded, are set to commence human clinical trials of their process, which involves sending bacterially derived nanocells or EDVs (EnGeneIC Delivery Vehicles) into rogue cancer cells in two separate waves.

US investigates whether Baitullah Mehsud died in drone attack: WSJ

Washington, August 07: The US government has begun an investigation into whether Pakistan Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud, who is said to be responsible for the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, was killed in a drone attack on Wednesday, senior officials have said in Washington.

DNA tests will be carried out to determine if indeed Mehsud has been killed.

Earlier reports had indicated that one of the wives of Mehsud had been killed in the drone strike in northwestern Pakistan’s South Waziristan tribal agency.

Education bill unacceptable in present form, say activists

Bhubaneswar, August 07: The bill passed by parliament on Tuesday to ensure free and compulsory education is unacceptable in its present form, child rights activists said on Thursday.

“It is unacceptable because by no means it guarantees the quality of education,” Prabir Basu, national convenor of Campaign against Child Labour (CACL), told sources.

CACL is an umbrella organization of over 6,500 groups working to eradicate child labour in the country.

Cabinet approves better pay scales for IIT, IIM faculty

New Delhi, August 07: The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the revision of pay scales of more than 50 institutions of faculty, design and scientific and other academic staff of the centrally funded institutions including the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) with retrospective effect from January 1, 2006.

The Government had set up a committee under the chairmanship of Prof. Govardhan Mehta to recommend revised pay scales for faculty of centrally funded technical institutions.

Arrested Hizbul men trained in Pakistan: Delhi Police

New Delhi, August 07: Two suspected Hizbul Mujahideen militants, who were arrested in New Delhi on Thursday night, had undergone training in terror camps in Pakistan and had been told to carry out strikes in the national capital, police sources said on Friday.

They also said that the alleged terrorists hailed from Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir.

Javed Ahmed and Ashiq Ali, who were in their early thirties, were nabbed by a team of Delhi Police’ elite anti-terror wing, the Special Cell, from Central Delhi’s Daryaganj locality on Thursday night.

40 students fall ill after mid-day meal

Raipur, August 07: Nearly 40 students of a Chhattisgarh government school fell ill on Thursday after they ate a mid-day meal into which a lizard had fallen, an official said.

The incident took place at Abhanpur block in Raipur district, some 30 km from here.

The official said some 38 of the 156 students up to Class 5 of the Singarbhata village government primary school started vomiting after eating the lunch.

Washington, August 07: An American professor has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright scholarship for a project in Kerala focusing on helping women discover the power of their voices in all aspects of their lives.

Kathleen Mulligan, assistant professor of voice and speech in Department of Theatre Arts at Ithaca College, New York will work closely with the women’s centre at the Rajagiri College of Social Sciences in Kochi as well as with adolescent girls in the community.
