Government to buy cheaper German chemicals to test swine flu

New Delhi, August 07: The government has decided to buy cheaper chemicals used for testing influenza A virus from a German-based company since the number of swine flu cases is increasing rapidly in the country, union Health Secretary Naresh Dayal said Friday.
“The government has decided to procure reagents and chemicals used for testing H1N1 from a Germany based company,” Dayal told reporters here.

Till now the government has been procuring the reagents and chemicals from US firm Biosystem.

40 new swine flu cases in edgy Maharashtra

Pune, August 07: As many as 40 new cases of swine flu were detected across Maharashtra Friday, taking the total number of people affected by the H1N1 virus in the state to 212, health authorities said here. Medical centres saw a steady flow of people getting themselves tested as a precautionary measure.
The new cases include a female student in Pune’s Symbiosis College and two medicos, said Ashok Ladda, additional director of the government’s Family Welfare Department. The medicos’ condition is stated to be critical and they have been put on ventilators, he added.

Orissa to recruit 3,500 tribals to fight Maoist menace

Bhubaneswar, August 07: The Orissa government Friday decided to recruit 3,500 young tribals as special police officers (SPO) to tackle the Maoist menace in the state.
“I had a review meeting relating to Maoist related violence. It has been decided that an additional 3,500 young tribals would be recruited in the police force,” Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said.

At present the state has about 2,100 SPOs.

“It has also been decided to set up a constable training centre with a capacity of 1,000 trainees. It will start functioning by this year end,” Patnaik said.

3 killed in Noida accident

Noida, August 07: Three people died and one was injured when a tractor trolley ran over a cycle rickshaw here Friday, police said.
The accident occurred Friday evening on the Noida-Dadri road under Phase II police station of Noida.

“The tractor trolley was being driven by the helper of the vehicle, who lost control over the tractor trolley and rammed into a cycle rickshaw. Three people in the rickshaw were killed and one was injured,” Superintendent of Police A.K. Tripathi said.

‘Talaq’ given under pressure is not divorce: Shariat court

Muzaffarnagar, August 07: A Shariat court here has observed that a ‘talaq’ given under pressure cannot amount to actual divorce.

The court made this observation while hearing a 15-year-old divorce case in which the petitioner had claimed that his assent for ‘talaq’ from his wife was “forcibly” taken by his in-laws.

Shafiqullah, 45, a resident of Aligarh, had approached the Shariat court seeking reunion with his 42-year-old wife Farah, who had been living with his parents for last 15 years.

District panels in Andhra Pradesh to fix school fees

Hyderabad, August 07: Parents in Andhra Pradesh can heave a sigh of relief as the state government has ordered all private schools to secure prior permission from specially constituted panels before increasing their tuition fees.

The orders were issued nearly a month after a high-level committee submitted its recommendations to the government to check the fleecing by the managements of privately-run schools.

Around 17,000 persons missing across Maha: State tells HC

Mumbai, August 07: Around 17,000 persons in Maharashtra are missing as per the police record, the state government told Bombay High Court.

Division bench of Justices Bilal Nazki and A R Joshi had asked for data related to missing persons while hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by a Dombivali-based woman, whose son is missing since January.

Additional Public Prosecutor K V Saste told the High Court yesterday that there are at least 16,883 missing person cases as of June 30 this year, where the person in question is yet to be traced.
