Race For Scholarships is On

Dubai, August 08: Universities have received double the number of applications for their scholarship programmes than expected, with more students seeking grants for tuition fee.

Though most universities have brought forward their fee structure from the year passed, the spiralling economy has propelled students to apply for scholarships rolled out by universities, who owing to the increase in applications have expanded their 
quota this year.

The Heriot Watt University in Dubai has increased its scholarship amount from Dh1 million in 2008 to Dh1.5 million this year.

Govt plans fresh offensive in Lalgarh

Kolkata, August 08: Though the state government has admitted the failure of the police operations in Lalgarh, it has requested the Union Home department for three months’ extension for the Central forces in the Maoist-dominated areas. According to sources, there is no possibility of immediate withdrawal of the Central forces from Lalgarh and its adjacent areas.

The IG (Law & Order), Surajeet Kar Purkaiastha, said: “We have not received any communication on withdrawal of the Central forces.”

RTA Offers Refreshments to Commuters

Dubai, August 08: The Public Transport Agency (PTA) at Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) are providing water, juices and refreshments to the passengers, according to a media release.

The campaign was introduced last month, PTA officials said.

Abdullah Yousef Al Ali, director of buses at Public Transport Agency said a number of companies had collaborated with the Agency in the campaign.

Car Rental Firm Ordered to Return Client’s Passport

Dubai, August 08: The passport is the personal property of all individuals, the Dubai Court of Appeals pointed out while ordering a car rental company to return a customer’s passport.

The court issued a verdict recently in a case filed by an Arab businessman, Ibrahim Ahmed, who alleged that the Dubai-based Al Shamoos car rental company was not willing to release his passport.

The court ordered the Muraqqabat police to recover the passport from the car rental firm and hand it over to the businessman.

Khalid: Alcohol sales to continue

Shah Alam, August 08: The sale of alcohol will continue to be allowed in Muslim-majority areas in Selangor but the state will adopt a self-regulatory system to ensure it is not sold to Muslims and minors, starting here.

Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim announced this after a 90-minute meeting with Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) officials and representatives of shops selling alcoholic drinks, including 7-Eleven and KK Group of Companies here yesterday.

2 Hizbul men held, were plotting attacks in Capital

New Delhi, August 08: Two Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) terrorists, Javed Ahmad Tantray and Ashiq Ali Batt, arrested around midnight on Thursday, were planning a ‘suicide attacks’ in several crowded places in Delhi.

On their agenda was a ‘shooting spree’, similar to the Mumbai attacks last year, sources in the Special Cell said.

They were given two AK-47 assault rifles and four magazines containing 120 rounds two hand grenades and enough ammunition to hold hostages at a place for several hours, said sources.

Another school student tests positive for H1N1, 13 cases in a day in Capital

New Delhi, August 08: One more school student tested positive for the H1N1swine flu virus today. In all, 13 cases were reported today from the Capital, one among them is a school student. The officials associated with Delhi Health Dept refused to name the school.

“It creates unnecessary panic among the parents,” said the official. However, sources said that the school is a new one that has not reported any swine flu cases earlier.

STRAWBERRY PUDDING RECIPE

Ingredients:

12 merry biscuits
400 gm fresh cream
1 packet strawberry jelly
1 tin cherry
2 cup sugar
3 cup milk
3 tbsp custard powder
1 tsp vanilla essence

How to make strawberrry pudding:

Dissolve custard powder in 1/2 cup milk.
Add 3 tbsp sugar to the remaining milk and boil it.
After 1 boil, add custard powder and stir continuously until it thickens.
Then remove it from the flame and add essence to it. Let it cool and place in the refrigerator.

COCONUT PUDDING RECIPE

Here’s a simple, yummy pudding recipe with coconut and cherries. Learn how to make nariyal pudding.

Ingredients:

1/2 tin condensed milk
1/2 cup coconut powder
1 cup sugar
1 cup fresh cream
1/2 tin cherry
1 tsp vanilla essence

How to make coconut pudding:
Grind sugar.
Beat cream so as to thicken it.
Mix condensed milk, coconut powder, sugar and vanilla essence. Pour it in a dish.
Spread cream on the top.
Garnish with cherry.
Refrigerate it for setting and serve chilled.

Daily intake of beetroot juice boosts stamina

London, August 08: Daily intake of beetroot juice boosts your stamina and could help you exercise up to 16 percent longer, according to new research.

A University of Exeter (U-E) led-study shows for the first time how nitrate in beetroot juice leads to a reduction in oxygen uptake, therefore making exercise less tiring.

Study co-author Andy Jones, professor at the U-E School of Sport and Health Sciences, said: “We were amazed by the effects of beetroot juice on oxygen uptake because these effects cannot be achieved by any other known means, including training.”

LEMON RICE RECIPE

Ingredients:

2cups boiled Rice
1/3rd cup Lemon Rice
6Tbsp Oil
1/2tsp Black Mustard seeds
Few curry leaves
3-4 green chilies
Salt to taste
1/4th tsp. turmeric powder
1/4th cup peanuts

How to make lemon rice:

Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, allow to splutter.
Add turmeric powder and peanuts, fry till brown.
Now add green chilies, curry leaves, salt and fry for 2 minutes.
Take it off from the flame and add lemon juice and mix well.
Now add this to the boiled rice and mix well.Lemon rice is ready to be served.

INDIAN FRIED RICE RECIPE

This is a typical Indian fried ric recipe.Spices and ghee is added to the boiled rice.

Ingredients:

400 gm Rice
100 gm Ghee or butter
65 gms onion
2 gms cinnamon
2 gms Bay leaf
1 gm peppercorns
6 gms Salt

How to make fried rice:

Heat the ghee in a large saucepan and add the finely sliced onion.
Fry till golden brown, remove from the pan and keep aside.
To the hot fat, add the washed and drained rice and the spices.
Keep stirring and fry for 4-5 minutes till the rice appears glazed. Add salt and boiling water an inch above the rice.

Centre calls for more hospitals to treat A(H1N1) cases

New Delhi, August 08: With a surge in the number of A(H1N1) flu cases, the Centre on Friday issued fresh guidelines to states asking them to increase the designated hospitals for treatment besides allowing private hospitals to treat patients and setting up helplines to provide information.

In a letter to the Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories, Health Secretary Naresh Dayal said it is necessary to identify more hospitals for examination and collection of samples of suspect cases of A (H1N1) flu.

Dahi Ke Kebab Recipe

Ingredients:

1.2 ltrs yoghurt
100 gms cottage cheese grated
40 gms chopped onion
30 gms chopped ginger
10 gms chopped fresh coriander
cornflour to dust
30 gms cashewnut powder
30 gms chopped raisins
4 gms white pepper powder
4 gms cardamom powder
salt to taste
oil to grill

How to make dahi kebab :

Hang yoghurt overnight.
Saute the onion and ginger in minimum oil till it sweats.
Mix the other ingredients.
Adjust seasoning and shape into tikkis.

Advani walks out over price rise issue

New Delhi, August 08: Agriculture and Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sharad Pawar has blamed “new factors” like increase in income, climate change, high energy prices, globalisation and urbanisation were impacting on the cost of essential commodities.

Making it clear that the UPA government was not ignoring the situation, he told Lok Sabha on Friday: “There have been changes in the world, which are having impact on India too.”

Gut hormone can lower sugar levels in diabetics

Toronto, August 08: Canadian researchers have found that a hormone in the human gut could be used to lower sugar levels in diabetics.

Researchers of the Toronto General Research Institute and the University of Toronto have found in their study on a rat model that activating receptors of the cholecystokinin (CCK) peptide hormone in the gut rapidly lowers blood glucose levels.

The activation of the receptors of this hormone triggers a signal to the brain and then to the liver to lower glucose or sugar production, say researchers in their paper.

China blames recent unrest on foreign-based separatists

Geneva, August 08: Last year’s unrest in Tibet and July’s violence in Xinjiang were instigated by separatists abroad, China told a United Nations human rights hearing on Friday.

“Facts have fully shown that the two incidents were premeditated and organised crimes of violence, directed and instigated by separatists abroad and carried out by separatists inside China,” said Duan Jielong, who led a 30-strong Chinese delegation attending a UN examination on China’s record on eliminating racial discrimination.

Obama taps Kennard as EU ambassador

Washington, August 08: US President Barack Obama has nominated former top communications watchdog William Kennard to become the US representative to the European Union.

Kennard is currently a managing director at The Carlyle Group, a global private equity firm, and sits on the board of The New York Times Company, which publishes the influential daily.

He was previously Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission.

Swine flu vaccine in ‘four to seven months’, says govt

New Delhi, August 08: India is at the forefront of developing a swine flu vaccine that will be available in “four to seven months”, the government announced Friday as 96 new infections were reported.

Speaking to reporters here Friday, the Union Health Secretary Naresh Dayal said: “The process has been already set in motion and India is at the forefront of developing a vaccine.”

“But the vaccine will be available by four to seven months from now,” he added.

There is no known vaccine so far to tackle the virus that has infected over 700 people in the country so far.

No proposal for disclosure scheme for black money: Govt

New Delhi, August 08: The government is not mulling over any proposal currently to offer disclosure scheme for black money, Parliament was informed on Friday.

“…There is no proposal at present for bringing a disclosure scheme for black money,” Minister of state for Finance S S Palanimanickam told Lok Sabha in a written reply.

India reports 163 polio cases this year

New Delhi, August 08: India has reported 163 polio cases so far this year and is among the four countries Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan, besides India – where the deadly paralytic disease continues to be endemic.

Informing the Rajya Sabha Friday, union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said only four countries in the world are endemic for polio and have never stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus.

China for ‘fair’ settlement of boundary row with India

Beijing, August 08: As India and China launched the latest round of their boundary talks in New Delhi, Beijing today said it favoured a “fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution” to the vexed issue based on the spirit of “mutual understanding and accommodation”.

“China is willing to make joint efforts with India in the spirit of mutual understanding and accommodation to seek a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution to the issue,” Jiang Yu, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, said.

Mumbai, August 08: What seems to be the never-ending saga between Income Tax Department and Bollywood, the latest frenzy says King Khan is in soup.

It appears that the Income Tax Department has filed a case against SRK at Bombay High Court. While Shah Rukh wanted to apply for tax deduction showing foreign expenses, the Income Tax Department is not too sure.

King Khan had appealed for tax deductions on his earnings on the Swiss watch Omega. SRK was also in the same trouble in 1998-99. His total earning this year is Rs 20 crore which also includes his foreign earning of Rs 29 lakhs.

Iran bomb-grade uranium not expected before 2013

Washington, August 08: The State Department’s intelligence bureau has concluded that Iran will not be technically capable of producing weapons grade uranium for nuclear weapons before 2013, the US intelligence director has told Congress.

The assessment by the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research was included in written responses to questions submitted to Congress by the Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair.

Pak confirms Baitullah’s death; US won’t

Islamabad, August 08: Uncertainty loomed on Thursday night over the report of Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud’s killing as the White House refused to confirm the report even as Pakistan went all out to claim it was true.

The Pakistan government and Tehrik-e-Taliban earlier in the day confirmed the death of Baitullah Mehsud and his second wife in an August 5 drone strike by US forces in south Wajiristan region of Pakistan.
