University politics: Jammu to shut down Monday

Jammu, August 08: A students’ organisation Saturday called a complete shutdown here Monday over “vague” statements by the Jammu and Kashmir government on setting up a central university near the state’s winter capital.
The shutdown call comes even as the Omar Abdullah government Wednesday said the first central university in Jammu and Kashmir will come up near here. There was simmering discontent among student organisations here who were protesting the government’s reported move to shift the varsity site to the Kashmir Valley.

ART centre inaugurated in Hyderabad hospital

Hyderabad, August 08: An anti-retro viral therapy (ART)centre at the district hospital in King Koti here was today inaugurated by the Minister for Health and Family WelfareDanam Nagendar.

Speaking to media persons, the Minister said that the ART centre would be very useful in helping HIV patients in the state.

Police baton charge Trinamool supporters, Mamata fumes

Kolkata, August 08: Police baton charged violent Trinamool Youth Congress supporters at Burdwan district’s troubled Mongolkote area Saturday, prompting party chief Mamata Banerjee’s to announce a rally at the same spot Tuesday.
The Trinamool workers hurled stones and bricks at police and later set afire a police vehicle.

Trouble began after a Trinamool Youth Congress meeting when party supporters tried to move towards Dhanyarukhi village, where the government had clamped prohibitory orders banning the assembly of more than four people.

Kerala cabinet set for expansion

Thiruvananthapuram, August 08: Former minister P.J. Joseph, who had resigned nearly three years ago after being accused of molesting a woman, will return to the Kerala cabinet Aug 17, the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) said Saturday, also indicating two more ministers were likely to be inducted.
“Now that Joseph has been given a clean chit by a court, it has been decided to accommodate him because his party (Kerala Congress-J) nominee Mons Joseph has already expressed his desire to step down,” LDF convenor Vaikom Viswan told reporters after a Front meeting.

Sotomayor is sworn in as US Supreme Court justice

Washington, August 08: Sonia Sotomayor has been sworn in as the Supreme Court’s first Hispanic justice. She’s only the third female justice in the court’s 220-year history.

Sotomayor took the second of two oaths of office Saturday from Chief Justice John Roberts in an ornate conference room at the high court, beneath a portrait of the legendary Chief Justice John Marshall. She swore a first oath in a private ceremony minutes earlier.

Sotomayor’s mother, brother, other relatives and friends joined her for the occasion.

NTPC to invest over Rs 9,000 crores in two projects: Solanki

Vadodara, August 08: The National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC), a Government of India undertaking, will invest more than Rs 9,000 crore in its two new expansion projects located at Jhanor and Kawas in Gujarat, Union Minister of State for Power Bharat Solanki said.

Talking to media persons after his visit to NTPC’s plant at Jhanor in neighbouring Bharuch district, about 100 kms from here today, Solanki said “NTPC has planned the expansion of its power stations at Kawas and Jhanor by adding 1,300 mw of capacity (nominal) at each location in Stage II expansion of these projects.

Flu suspect leaves hospital without informing authorities

Jaipur, August 08: A 35-year-old man, admitted to the SMS hospital here after showing symptoms of swine flu, todays neaked out of the hospital, hoodwinking the staff on duty.

Bhajan Lal was admitted to the hospital after his return from Sharjah this morning when the medical team at Sanganer Airport here detected him with symptoms of the influenzavirus, official sources said.

“Lal left the isolation ward without informing the authorities but left behind his bag,” they said.

Call centre guard killed as speeding cab turns turtle

New Delhi, August 08: A 25-year-old man was killed and five others were injured when a speeding cab of a call-centre overturned in south Delhi in the wee hours today.

The victim is identified as Satish Kumar who was working as a security guard with the call centre.

The incident took place near Moti Bagh flyover around4 am Saturday when Kumar was on way to Ghaziabad to escort the employees.

The deceased was sitting in the front and died on the spot.

The employees in the cab told police that the driverwas over speeding and did not stop despite repeated warnings.

Rafsanjani to lead next Friday prayer, renewed protests expected

Rafsanjani’s last appearance in the prayer ceremony July 17 led to widespread protest demonstrations in several parts of Tehran against alleged fraud in the June 12 presidential voting which led to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s re-election.

South African president meets Hillary Clinton in Durban

Johannesburg, August 08: South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma met the visiting US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Saturday in the port city of Durban.
“In both countries there are two new administrations which are taking the relationship a level higher. That is what we are trying to do,” Zuma said after the 45-minute long meeting.

“He (Zuma) gave his views on regional issues from Zimbabwe, Somalia and Sudan. His advice on these issues was extremely helpful,” Clinton said a media briefing.

LDF clears Joseph’s return to cabinet

Thiruvananthapuram, August 08: The state committee of the ruling LDF today cleared the return of Kerala Congress-J leader P J Joseph to the cabinet following his acquittal in the case of misbehavior towards a woman passenger in a flight two years back.

Joseph had resigned his post in 2007 after coming under a cloud of allegations of misbehaving with a woman on a Chennai-Kochi flight.

Two months back, a court at Alandur in Chennai acquitted him of the charge, following which his party KC(J) decided to reinstate him in the cabinet.

Dhaka begins troop withdrawal from Chittagong Hill Tracts

Dhaka, August 08: Bangladesh has begun withdrawing its army from the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), home to Buddhist tribals, to enforce a pact signed in 1997.

Two camps were vacated Friday in Khagrachzari and Rangamati and withdrawal took place Saturday at two more – one camp at Dash Bill manned by the Ansars, the paramilitary force, and an army camp at Magaichari, the Star Online reported.

The process was decided last month by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government that in its previous tenure (1996-2001) had signed the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) Peace Accord 1997.

BJP to launch nation-wide agitation against price rise

New Delhi, August 08: Charging the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government with having ‘failed’ to keep its promise to bring down the prices of essential commodities in 100 days, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Saturday said it would launch a nation-wide agitation against its ‘inability’ to control sky-rocketting prices.

The BJP will organise protest marches and sit-ins in all districts Aug 17 – the day Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is slated to meet state chief ministers to discuss steps to be taken to tackle price rise and hoarding of food commodities.
