YSR gives nod for stepped-up raids on hoarders

Hyderabad, August 09: Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy has given the green signal to the vigilance and enforcement department to intensify raids on hoarders and black marketeers in order to bring down prices of essential commodities in the open market.

The chief minister held discussions on the price situation with Director General of Vigilance and Enforcement SK Jayachandra and other senior officials concerned at his Begumpet camp office today and instructed them to take all measures to ensure that no stocks of essentials were hoarded by traders.

In London, Turkey’s Hizb ut-Tahrir protests secularism

London, August 09: Protesters from Turkey’s banned Islamic political group Hizb ut-Tahrir have staged a demonstration in front of the Turkish embassy in London.

The Saturday demonstrators were protesting the arrest of over 200 of their colleagues across Turkey two weeks ago.

About 300 people participated in the demonstration, saying that Turkey is losing its Islamic credentials by upholding a secular constitution which calls for the demolition of any resemblance of Islam within the society, a Press TV corresponded reported.

Telugu Talli flyover to be closed for a week

Hyderabad, August 09: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has taken up repairs to the wearing coat at 10 badly distressed expansion joints on the Telugu Talli Flyover. Traffic will not be allowed to move on the flyover for the next one week.

Magadheera ‘shocks’ two to death

Warangal, August 09: Two were electrocuted and 18 others sustained burns reportedly due to a short-circuit at a cinema screening Magadheera, the muchpublicised film of megastar Chiranjeevi’s son Ramcharan Teja, in Kazipet tonight.

The incident occurred around 9.30 p.m. at the booking counter of mini-Bhavani Talkies where scores of people were standing in a queue for the second-show tickets.

An electric pole stands right next to the counter which is actually an asbestos shed.

NATO helicopters injure 5 Afghan police

Kabul, August 09: NATO helicopters have ‘mistakenly’ fired on Afghan police, injuring at least five of them, NATO and Afghan officials have said.

NATO says its forces were responding to small arms fire from insurgents in Ghazi Province early Saturday, when two of its Apache helicopters fired on police by mistake, VOA reported.

Afghan officials have confirmed the incident but said at least six police were wounded, with at least one in critical condition.

No reliable estimate about AIDS: Minister

Hyderabad, August 09: Union Minister for Urban Development S. Jaipal Reddy has said what was worrying in the fight against HIV/AIDS was the lack of reliable estimate about the prevalence of the deadly disease.

Inaugurating a national conference on HIV here on Saturday, Mr. Reddy felt the administrators were not attaching as much importance as they should have in checking the spread of the disease. He asked them to draw up strategies to create social awareness so that the stigma and ostracisation associated with the problem was contained.

California, August 09: Australian Samantha Stosur used her big serve to overwhelm Romanian teenager Sorana Cirstea 6-3 6-2 in the semi-finals of the LA Championships on Saturday.

In reaching her first final of the year, Stosur nailed seven aces and won 85 percent of her first serve points.

“It’s a lot easier when you get off to good start,” said Stosur, who broke the Romanian in her first service game and did not face a break point in the first set. “I played well and eliminated the things she could do to me.”

Prisoners in UP will get chance to pursue education

Lucknow, August 09: Jailbirds lodged in prisons across Uttar Pradesh will now get a chance to pursue education right from the primary level to post graduate degrees including MBAs.

In a bid to reform prisoners, the prison department has launched an ambitious project, wherein inmates will be able to attend classes from primary to higher education level besides being allowed to appear in certificate examinations.

Mumbai, August 09: Ateeq Ahmed is on the wanted list of both the Shivaji Nagar, as well as the Govandi Police Station, yet both these precincts have been unable to arrest the man despite him moving around freely in their jurisdiction.

ETA claims responsibility for various attacks

Madrid, August 09: The Basque separatist organisation ETA claimed in a statement issued on Sunday responsibility for various attacks, including those that killed two Civil Guard officers and a police inspector it called a “torturer”.

In the statement released to the pro-independence Basque daily Gara, a regular channel for ETA communications, the group claimed the June 19 car bomb attack that killed 49-year-old police inspector Eduardo Puelles Garcia in the Basque town of Arrigorriaga.

New BE colleges under scanner

Hyderabad, August 09: Engineering colleges which have come up in the last two academic years are now under the scanner. A three-member task force has been constituted by the higher education department to inspect just what their facilities are like.

The inspections have been ordered by chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy following reports of AICTE approval to colleges without basic infrastructure.

The task force will include an official from a university from outside the state, a senior engineering professional and a representative from the higher education department.

DNA test awaited to confirm Noordin’s death

Jakarta, August 09: Indonesian police said on Sunday it could take two weeks to confirm the death of Asian terror mastermind Noordin Mohammed Top, reported killed in a dramatic standoff with police special forces.

“The whole process of DNA testing will take two weeks. It’s a standard procedure,” national police spokesman Nanan Soekarna told.

“The test is being conducted at the Kramat Jati police hospital,” he said, referring to a hospital in Jakarta where a body believed to be Noordin’s was taken after the end of the 17-hour siege at a remote house in Central Java.

Taiwan Air Force pilot who defected to China wants to return home

Taipei, August 09: A Taiwan Air Force pilot who defected to China in 1981 wants to return to Taiwan, but Taipei said he will be tried if he comes home, according to a newspaper report on Sunday.

Huang Chih-cheng, who flew an F-5F warplane to China on August 8, 1981 at the age of 29, is now homesick and wants to return to Taiwan after his retirement next year, the United Daily News said.

But Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said Huang will be tried for treason if he returns to Taiwan because “his defection is still going on.” Taiwan’s statute of limitations is 25 years.
