14 killed, 38 hurt in Venezuela bus crash

Venenzuela, October 18: At least 14 people have been killed and 38 others injured after a passenger bus collided with another vehicle in western Venezuela.

The head-on collision of the vehicles occurred in the western state of Barinas due to the bus driver’s ‘reckless’ driving.

“A total of 14 people have been killed and 38 injured as a result of a head-on collision between an intercity coach and a Renault Clio car,” RIA Novosti quoted an unnamed local law enforcement official as saying on Saturday.

No interference in Younis decision – Sports minister

Karachi, October 18: Younis Khan’s future as Pakistan captain will be decided without any interference from the government, national sports minister Aftab Shah Jilani said.

Younis offered to resign as captain following days of rumour and speculation surrounding Pakistan’s exit from the Champions Trophy in South Africa. The Pakistan board is yet to take decision on the offer and Jilani said he hoped merit would be the deciding factor.

Vettori keen to push McCullum down the order

Wellington, October 18: New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has said Brendon McCullum will continue as an opener for the ODI series against Pakistan because Jesse Ryder’s absence due to injury meant the opening line-up was already a little shaky.

However Vettori said he was keen to push McCullum down the order in future in order to exploit the batting Powerplay.

Harris and O’Brien drag Redbacks to 249

Zimbabwe cruise to six-wicket win over Kenya

Harare, October 18: Mark Vermeulen, Forster Mutizwa and Brendan Taylor all scored half-centuries as Zimbabwe beat Kenya by six wickets to win the fourth one-day international and wrap up the five-game series on Saturday.

Chasing 271 to win, after Kenya had won the toss and chosen to bat, Zimbabwe reached their target with two overs to spare.

After opener Hamilton Masakadza hit 23, Vermeulen (56) and Mutizwa (79) then added 111 for the second wicket at better than a run-a-ball.

Taylor (60 not out) was still there at the end as Zimbbawe sealed victory.

One bad game costs us semis berth: Kumble

Bangalore, October 18: Bangalore Royal Challengers captain Anil Kumble rued that one bad game, against Victoria Bushrangers, did his side in as they crashed out of the Champions League Twenty20 here.

Bangalore lost to Victoria in their first League B Super Eight match on Thursday and despite today’s eight-wicket win over Delhi Daredevils, Kumble’s side are out of semifinal contention.

Omanis to Receive Technical Training

Muscat, October 18: More than 1,400 Omani youngsters will receive training in various trades under agreements signed here by the government with 
local institutes.

They will be trained for administrative and technical jobs and as equipment operators, typists, printers, hairdressers and beauticians.

The RO3.6 million deals were inked on behalf of the government by Manpower Minister Shaikh Abdullah bin Nassir Al Bakri.

SMS Messages Spread Health Awareness

Jeddah, October 18: The Ministry of Health (MoH) sent out millions of SMS text messages on the Second Annual Global Hand Washing Day (on Friday) under the slogan – ‘Clean Hands Save Lives’ — asking parents to encourage their children to wash their hands regularly.

Dr Khalid Al Mirghlani, spokesman for the ministry said that diarrhoeal diseases and acute respiratory infections are responsible for the deaths of more than 3.5 million children under the age of five each year.

Advocacy groups hopeful on new US Sudan policy

Washington, October 18: The Obama administration plans to announce a new Sudan policy on Monday that deepens engagement with Khartoum but also applies renewed pressure, in a move cautiously welcomed by advocacy groups.

The New York Times reported that the policy shift, set to be unveiled by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other top officials, will include dialogue with Sudan’s leadership and firm deadlines on fulfilling promises made under a 2005 deal with rebels from southern Sudan.

Turkish PM slams Israel as a ‘persecutor’

Ankara, October 18: Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan slammed Israel as a “persecutor” on Saturday in the latest verbal volley since the Gaza offensive raised tensions between the regional allies.

“Turkey has never, in its history, been on the side of persecutors, it has always defended the oppressed,” Erdogan said without directly naming Israel in a speech in the central city of Kirsehir.

“Turkey has not hostility against any country, but … we are against injustice,” he said in the televised remarks.

Arabs concerned about Israeli settlements: Mubarak

Rome, October 18: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said on Saturday the entire Arab world was concerned about Israel’s settlement construction in Palestinian territories, ANSA news agency reported.

Mubarak, who met with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi during a visit in Rome, also denounced what he described as Israel’s “attempts to assimilate Jerusalem.”

Israel’s continuation of settlement construction “worries not only the Palestinians but the entire Muslim world,” Mubarak said.

Experts doubt effectiveness of US sanctions on Iran

Washington, October 18: A flurry of congressional measures aimed at toughening US sanctions on Iran to pressure the Islamic republic to abandon its suspect nuclear program will likely have little to no impact, experts say.

Congress sent President Barack Obama legislation on Thursday that bars foreign firms that sell petroleum products to Iran from winning US government deals.

UN calls for US-Iran talks on nuclear dispute

Vienna, October 18: Direct talks without preconditions between the United States and Iran are the only solution to the conflict over Tehran’s nuclear program, the U.N. nuclear agency’s head was quoted as saying on Saturday.

New sanctions against Iran would only aggravate the dispute rather than push it to give in to international demands, Mohamed ElBaradei, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, told Austrian daily Die Presse.

Gargash Lauds Task Force for Tackling Human Trafficking

Dubai, October 18: The Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs and Chairman of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking, Dr. Anwar Gargash, on Saturday lauded the initiative of Dubai’s Attorney-General Issam Al Humaidan to set up a permanent task force of specialists to deal exclusively with human trafficking cases.

Al Shaibani dominated the ninth Emirates Film Competition (EFC), as he won four awards in this year’s fiesta for Gulf Arabic movies. The three main categories were UAE shorts, GCC shorts and GCC features.

A veteran filmmaker in the UAE, Shaibani was awarded with the Best Short Film in the UAE, Best Feature Film in the Gulf, Best Script and Best Editing.

Diwali Adds Glitter to Dubai

Dubai, October 18: Dubai, the City of Lights, wore a much brighter look on Saturday with thousands of Indian expatriates celebrating Diwali, the festival of lights, by lighting up rows of lanterns and lamps inside and outside their houses, shops and offices.

Right to Self-defence Protected by Law

Dubai, October 18: According to lawyer Hussain Al Jaziri of Jaafar Alwan, Al Jaziri and Associates for Advocacy and Legal Consultancy, if a person has suspicion that he/she is being stalked by the same individual, he/she should immediately report the problem to the police without any hesitation.

If the person is subject to sudden attack for theft, molestation or any other motive, he/she has the right to protect oneself. As per the UAE law, self-defence is an acquired legitimate right if the attacker indeed gets into action, Al Jaziri said.

High Sewage Fee Angers Residents of Ajman

Ajman, October 18: Ajman residents are complaining about high sewage fees and have urged the authorities to include the tariff in the water and electricity bills, instead of charging separately.

Nader Amin, an Egyptian who resides in the Naemiya area, said he is paying a fixed amount of Dh70 every month for sewage fees, irrespective of whether he is staying in his one-bedroom apartment or not. “This is unfair. The fees are unreasonably high and should be connected to real consumption, at least in view of water and electricity usage,” Amin said.

2,500 Have Tested Positive in Dubai Since April

Abu Dhabi, October 18: Since the beginning of the H1N1 outbreak in April, about 8,000 patients in Dubai have been tested, with approximately 2,500 tested positive for Influenza A and 5,000 tested negative, according to a healthcare professional.

Jane Griffiths, Associate Professor and Director of Nursing at Rashid Hospital in Dubai said of the 2,500 who tested positive, a majority of them belong to the high risk groups including those below five years old, pregnant women and those with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes.

Too early to send more troops to Afghan: US

Washington, October 18: US Senator John Kerry says it is “irresponsible” to send more troops to Afghan, amid an election crisis that has placed the Kabul government’s legitimacy at stake.

The United States should not proceed with a new Afghanistan strategy committing a potentially major increase in US resources, including tens of thousands more troops, without first securing a clear partner in Kabul, Kerry told CNN in an interview to be aired Sunday.
